Slow Searching After Moving User Directory

Feb 10, 2014

I recently got a new laptop and have just installed Windows 8 onto it clean, I then upgraded to 8.1. Everything has been running perfectly but the HDD has two partitions so I wanted to put all my personal documents and files on a separate partition to my programs and Windows.

I achieved this by creating a new Admin account and moving the user's folder to the other partition and then I modified the path to my personal documents via regedit. Everything went according to plan and works fine so far.

However, one side effect of doing this seems to be that the live search found by hovering over the right hand side of the screen is now incredibly slow. Even keystrokes into the search bar suffer from some kind of lag and once a search query has been input it takes around 20-30 seconds to display results.

I have logged into the temporary account I used to move my personal documents and the search is fine on that so I'm guessing it's something to do with having the account on a separate HDD partition to the Windows files and folders.

get my search back to it's original speed whilst still having my personal documents on separate partition to the Windows directory

How To Integrate 8.1 User Accounts With Active Directory

Aug 27, 2014

At my company we are currently running a server (with Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard), without Active Directory, and we have a bunch of laptops running Windows 8.1 Pro. Now we want to install Dynamics CRM which requires an Active Directory domain.

I am trying to run through every anticipated problem before I do the domain configuration. The last problem that I anticipate is the following:

Our MD's laptop is currently logging in without a Microsoft account (in other words, he uses a standard local user profile in Windows 8.1 Pro). He has a whole lot of data in this profile from a few years of work. So now, when we configure the domain, obviously he will have to sign in using an Active Directory username and password. So question 1 is, is it possible to synchronize the current local (non-Windows Live) account with the domain account? The second question is, how will this affect his data, settings, etc? And the third question is, when he's working from home, without the domain controller to authenticate logins, will he still be able to access his data and profile? In other words, what I'm really asking is, will we be able to kind of "integrate" the Active Directory account and local account as one account, but the authentication is AD based when he's at the office, but local if he's at home?

Accounts :: User Folders Gone After Recent Directory Migration?

Dec 5, 2013

I had changed the locations of several folders under C:Usersmyname to my personal server share (Documents, Desktop, Favorites, Links, and Pictures if I recall correctly).

Documents was redirected to servernamemyname
Desktop, etc was recirected to servernamemynameDesktop and so on

servername was recently taken out of service and what was servernamemyname is now my H: drive. Fine and good. My stuff was moved and is all in the new spot. Except that since I had all of those folder locations changed they're no longer visible under C:Usersmyname and my Desktop won't load because it can't find that directory (servernamemyname). How can I get those back without creating a new login profile (which I did on another system I use)?

Accounts :: Moving User Folder When Win 8 Preinstalled

Sep 8, 2013

I am attempting to relocate the Users folder from C:/ to D:/ (these are physically distinct internal 1 TB drives) as par of a new clean install of Windows 8 on a new laptop.

I am following the tutorial here: User Profiles - Relocate to another Partition or Disk

The problem I face is at the stage of creating an answer file for the Sysprep tool.

Windows 8 is preinstalled and there is no separate installation media - rather it boots/reinstalls off a petition on the C:/ drive. Hnce I cannot run the unattend file command line:

<cpifflineImage cpi:source="wim:F:/sources/install.wim#Windows 8" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />

Where F: would be a CD drive or USB drive.

I have tried creating recovery media on a USB stick using the HP utility, but while this works there appears to be no directory structure or file comparable to that listed above. Indeed there seems to be no install.wim file anywhere.

As I am told pre-installs are very common on Win 8 laptops (mine is an HP Envy17-j005tx), I assume there is an alternative approach but I can't find it.....

As to why I want to move the Users folder - I have XP set up like this on my old desktop and it makes for a far saner directory structure, easier backup and if one needs to reinstall Windows, it makes for a much cleaner simpler process as User information is preserved on a separate disk. Also one is much less likely to run out of disk space!!

How To Get Lightning Fast File Searching Like On Mac

Dec 12, 2013

I've got a Macbookpro

One of the best things I like is being able to find files *instantly*

I'm a directory freak and looove to embed my files in sooo many levels deep

On the Mac, I'll search. I'll blink... and the results has come back

(I hate the interface which I haven't quite got to grips with just yet)

On Windows: there's a file. I don't know what it's called. I don't know where I've put it. I know I last used it 3 months ago and it's a Word doc. I don't know what drive I've put it on...

So I search the whole damn computer... for a doc file less than 6 months old

I then go fishing... go for a coffee... have a bath...

And when I get back 5 hours later... hey presto... Windows gives me a list of results.

I know there was some indexing programs - like Google Desk (erm... I think that's what it's called - I could just be making that up from my mind)... I know Microsoft had one as well... and a few other 3rd party programs where available.Where are they?

I have Windows 8 - I thought it would be built in?

One thing I don't like is adding an extra layer - thereby slowing my machine down

On Mac it's part of the blood system - it's inbuilt and takes no overhead

I assume, every single time a file gets added or removed... the file record database is updated.

Searching For Phrases But Finding Single Words Instead

Maintenance :: 8.1 RTM - Slight Delay When Searching Control Panel Items?

Sep 20, 2013

I have three machines that were running windows 8 on them. I used my MSDN to upgrade all 3 to 8.1 RTM. The only odd thing is search on just one of the PCs.

On this PC, when searching for items found in the control panel (such as "Indexing Options", etc) it seems to have an artificial 2-3 second delay before displaying the results under the search field. On the other two machines, they're near instant.

For those with 8.1, try it on your machine. Search for Indexing Options of File History and see how long it takes to show up, either by hitting Start and typing or Win+S...

Is there any reason why this may be? I've already rebuilt the index and decreased the size of it, as well as rebooted several times and ran CCleaner a bit. The only difference is this machine is Win 8.1 Pro, while the others are regular. I have disabled the Bing web search on all three and all other settings have been left alone.

Windows 8 Very Slow To Access Files - Green Ribbon Of Slow Death

Dec 16, 2012

I have just built a new computer and Installed Win8. The motherboard, processor, and system drive are all brand new Intel stuff; the media drive is a new Seagate. Programs get up and running just fine, but I have transferred my files over from my old xp machine, and Win Explorer is very slow to access them.

I'll open a folder, and more often than not the thumbs will not be there; I'll then try to open or preview a file and I'll get the green progress bar over the address bar. This will often take up to a minute or more to run, and if I leave it be then the icons will usually appear and the files will then be accessible. If I try to open or preview a file before it's done things lock up on me.

After navigating away from that folder and allowing some time to pass however, the thumbs dissapear again and I am back to square one. sometimes the thumbs will reappear all on their own. this seems to be an issue whether we're talking large files or small, or folders with 100's of files or as few as 8. The very same files are instantly accessible by the new comp from the original locations on my external USB drive and on my xp machine over the network. Once they are copied to the new machine is when things get bogged down. This seems to be the case both on the system drive and the media drive.

Furthermore, right from the very beginning, I've had icons disappearing and reappearing from my start menu apps page.

I have tried the following to resolve the problem:

- I have optimized the folders in question for both the types of media therein, and back to "General Items" again

- I have disabled indexing both on the drives themselves and in the libraries control panel

- I have run a full system virus scan with Bit Defender

- I have contacted Windows support and they have run a scan that showed Windows itself to be working properly

One thing that occures to me is the problem seems to be with the SATA drives and the SATA drives only, but if there's something wrong with the mother board wouldn't my programs have trouble opening too?

Drag Files / Folders From One Directory To Another

Feb 18, 2014

I am trying to organize the files on my system, and am consistently butting heads against this problem. It always seems to be the last file I highlight. In other words.. I have two directories open on the screen, and am simply looking to drag files/folders from one directory to another. To do this, you almost always have to highlight the folder you want to move, and doing this seems to put a lock on that folder. If I highlight more folders, it seems to be ok, except for the last one I highlight will always fail to copy.

Any way to prevent windows from locking files in this way?

Creating Directory Junctions That Keeps Existing Files?

May 26, 2014

I got an excellent deal on an SSD (it's hard to beat free ;D ). It's incredibly small is the only problem, however. Only 32GB's. Anyways I installed windows on it, and before I've even entered the setup, I went back into the install CD, open command prompt and robocopied the Users and Program Files (x86) to my 2TB HDD. But now I have a problem...

In windows 7 you could have easily moved the 'Program Files' and 'ProgramData' directories over to another HDD and it would have worked just fine. However, the metro protection crap on Windows 8 forbids you from doing this... Well I mean you could, but it would result in no windows updates (updates will always fail) and Metro apps will fail to start and will not install. So I HAVE to keep the existing files inside the program files/programdata located on the boot drive.

If I had a larger SSD, this wouldn't really be a problem, however because mine is so small, there no room for any new information on that drive once windows is installed. However, I still want to receive updates and use metro apps. So my question is...

how to keep existing files on a partition, but then create a link to a different Volumw that any new directories will be written to?

Get Message Saying File Directory Corrupted And Unreadable?

Jun 27, 2014

i'm not sure why this has started, but when I now try to DL any files or save ANY files, I get a message saying 'File directory is corrupted & unreadable'.

I tried to open an image with 'Windows Preview' & got 'Windows Photo viewer cant open this image, as the file appears to be damaged to large or corrupted' (none of which is correct)-yet I can still open ALL images by double clicking to use the windows photo/image viewer App

I also can not save anything either- I tried to take a screen shot & save it using paint- I just got the same 'File directory is corrupted & unreadable' message.

With Windows Internet Explorer, I have been trying to DL a torrent, but cant "open" the DL link (I click "open", but nothing happens), nor can I 'save it' (as I get the same 'File is corrupted & unreadable' message for both "save" options), nor can I click cancel to close the DL options box in Internet Explorer- as again, nothing happens when I click it.

To try get around these problems I tried using the magnet link option- which worked ONCE, but now even that wont work, as I cant DL the 2nd file- the DL starts (after taking ages to DL meta data- which is odd in itself), then the torrent is shortly terminated & I get the 'Error: File or directory is corrupt & unreadable' file message .

TO add to this I cant listen to a podcast with chrome either (tells me QuickTime failed to initialise Error#0) when I click "listen in a new window" & when I click "download" nothing happens at all.

EDITED: I forgot this problem has also prevented my VPN from working- I get the same Corrupted file/directory message every time I've tried to re-install it.

DL was fine, viewing images worked perfectly & I was able to open things in new windows without a problem.I have tried fixing with command prompt- it said it couldn't run to find the problems, tried using the windows restore thing, again said it couldnt complete a restore due to not being able to run properly.

Opening WinExplorer With Pre-defined Directory Does Not Work

Jun 10, 2014

I want to setup a shortcut which (when double clicked) opens Windows Explorer with a pre-defined directory.

Under Windows 7 users could setup a shortcut with auto-expansion and auto-marking that directory (sample: C:data) in left side tree view with the following command:

%windir%explorer.exe /n,/e,C:data

It works fine in Win 7.

When I try to setup the same cmd/shortcut in TaskBar of Windows 8 it does not work resp. does work only partially.

Yes, on the right side the content of C:data is shown. But on the left side tree view the tree is NOT expanded and the directory C:data is NOT marked.

How else can I achieve auto-expansion + auto-marking in Win 8 analog to the Win 7 command?

Virtualization :: Exclude VM Directory From HOST Virus Scan

Apr 23, 2014

If say I have a Windows Guest running its own AV software whether it's Windows defender or anything else then it seems to me that by having the HOST also running an AV software we are going to have two pieces of AV software running on the same data areas (the VM Disks).

It would seem to make sense to exclude the VM directories from the HOST's AV scan when the VM's are running -- but I haven't seen any mechanism to dynamically turn off parts of the AV system -- it's either an ALL or NONE mechanism.

I'm sure the performance of both HOST and GUESTS could be enhanced if AV software was ONLY running on the machines it needed to be - but AV software doesn't seem to allow for excluding certain parts of the machines.

If I have up and running say 4 VM's - that's my normal usage - then on the Virtual Machine directory on the Host I could have 5 (yes FIVE) AV pieces of software scanning / protecting it (The VM directories / data areas) at all times -- The VM's of course need to be individually protected if they are on the Net.

I've Googled this a bit and it seems everything I've found yet (except one) has been with logging in to existing profiles. For the one that was with a new profile, the solution didn't work.

I tried deleting all files similar to the specified one (file in C:UsersDefaultAppDataLocalMicrosoftVSCommon12.0SQM with name of "sqmdata-####-###-#####.sqm"), but that had no effect. I'm guessing this is because I have VS2013 installed, as this happens with my laptop as well. I don't want to delete my profile, I have important (and large) data in my documents folder that I don't want to lose.
