One of the best things I like is being able to find files *instantly*
I'm a directory freak and looove to embed my files in sooo many levels deep
On the Mac, I'll search. I'll blink... and the results has come back
(I hate the interface which I haven't quite got to grips with just yet)
On Windows: there's a file. I don't know what it's called. I don't know where I've put it. I know I last used it 3 months ago and it's a Word doc. I don't know what drive I've put it on...
So I search the whole damn computer... for a doc file less than 6 months old
I then go fishing... go for a coffee... have a bath...
And when I get back 5 hours later... hey presto... Windows gives me a list of results.
I know there was some indexing programs - like Google Desk (erm... I think that's what it's called - I could just be making that up from my mind)... I know Microsoft had one as well... and a few other 3rd party programs where available.Where are they?
I have Windows 8 - I thought it would be built in?
One thing I don't like is adding an extra layer - thereby slowing my machine down
On Mac it's part of the blood system - it's inbuilt and takes no overhead
I assume, every single time a file gets added or removed... the file record database is updated.
how to set a particular folder as the default location for a specific file type, or, in the event that's not possible, just set it as the default location for all file types. Mainly I'm interested in setting one specific folder as default for every time I right click on an image and choose save as. I'm tired of having to browse through to my images folder each and every time. It didn't used to do this until I upgraded to windows 8.1. I don't really use "libraries" as there are only two folders I use for downloads. One is for images. The other is for everything else. I don't mind having to browse to my downloads folder, just not the images folder as that is generally what I download the most since I work with graphics a lot.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was working on a document that was located in a zip archive. I have 7-zip installed on my computer. I'm running Windows 8. I repeatedly saved the file in Word while I was working on it. However, I've since rebooted the computer and my file is missing. All of the "saves". I've made didn't seem to update the file in the archive. I understand that I should have extracted the file first before working on it; however, I received no prompt from Word 2013 that my saves were not being recorded. Perhaps the file was saved into some sort of temporary folder/file that 7-zip creates/works from.
Are my changes lost permanently? Does there exist a temporary file somewhere with my changes in it?
This is a court document and I made substantial modifications to it, and I really need it back.
A few weeks ago I had some issues with not being able to save files.
Some days later when I tried to open a word document I got a message saying something along the lines of "are you sure you want to open this file? It has become corrupted and caused loads of problems with your computer the last time you had it open". So I guess that was the original issue. At the time I didn't desperately need the file and I had a lot of work so I haven't had time to try to solve the issue until now. What might have caused the file to get corrupted? (I'm not even sure my PC used this term). And is there any way I can retrieve the information in it.

I recently got a new laptop and have just installed Windows 8 onto it clean, I then upgraded to 8.1. Everything has been running perfectly but the HDD has two partitions so I wanted to put all my personal documents and files on a separate partition to my programs and Windows.
I achieved this by creating a new Admin account and moving the user's folder to the other partition and then I modified the path to my personal documents via regedit. Everything went according to plan and works fine so far.
However, one side effect of doing this seems to be that the live search found by hovering over the right hand side of the screen is now incredibly slow. Even keystrokes into the search bar suffer from some kind of lag and once a search query has been input it takes around 20-30 seconds to display results.
I have logged into the temporary account I used to move my personal documents and the search is fine on that so I'm guessing it's something to do with having the account on a separate HDD partition to the Windows files and folders.
get my search back to it's original speed whilst still having my personal documents on separate partition to the Windows directory
I have a folder that contains a bunch of files that contain craft shows. If I want to search for a file that contains a specific show I'll open the folder then in the search field in the top right corner I'll type in "Christmas Carousel Craft Show". The problem is that every single file containing the word "christmas" or the word "carousel" or the word "craft" or the word "show" pops up! I just want to find the file with the phrase "Christmas Carousel Craft Show".

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have three machines that were running windows 8 on them. I used my MSDN to upgrade all 3 to 8.1 RTM. The only odd thing is search on just one of the PCs.
On this PC, when searching for items found in the control panel (such as "Indexing Options", etc) it seems to have an artificial 2-3 second delay before displaying the results under the search field. On the other two machines, they're near instant.
For those with 8.1, try it on your machine. Search for Indexing Options of File History and see how long it takes to show up, either by hitting Start and typing or Win+S...
Is there any reason why this may be? I've already rebuilt the index and decreased the size of it, as well as rebooted several times and ran CCleaner a bit. The only difference is this machine is Win 8.1 Pro, while the others are regular. I have disabled the Bing web search on all three and all other settings have been left alone.
So, i got me some DVR based programs used to monitor multiple locations on the same tv.
Is there any soft out there that can do this, cycle through alt-tab at specific time intervals?
I have found one, but i can only set it to cycle at the same interval for all windows, i want to spend 10 minutes on the first window and just 1 on the second.
When I am uploading a photo, a window appears, 'Choose File to Upload'.
This window appears rather small. I would like it to Re-appear permanently in a larger size.
I try dragging the window from the corners and sides, but it always re-appears in the same small size.
How do I make the window appear in my chosen size permanently?
Is there a way to create a shortcut to invoke the Switch User to a specific account? What I mean by this: Lets say you 2 users, A and B. The computer starts up and logs into A. Clicking on the account picture of A on the Start screen gives you the option to switch to B. When that is clicked, A is put in the background (not logged of) and B is logged in. Is there a way to automate that process?

When I had Windows 7 I scheduled a task for my laptop to shutdown at 3 a.m. When I would log in the next morning, Chrome would give me the "restore" option so I didn't lose the browser tabs I had been using the night before. Skype would still be logged into, and another program I use nightly, would be logged out, but still on my taskbar.
Now I have Windows 8 and when I used the task scheduler exactly as it had been in Windows 7, everything is gone. I don't get the restore tabs option for Chrome, Skype is completely logged out of, and the other program is shutdown and not in the task bar.
I want to find a way to get it to work as it did in Windows 7. I thought maybe just putting it into hibernation would be the answer, but I can't find clear instructions on how to do this. I tried changing the -s parameter to -h and removing the -f parameter, but this morning when I opened the lid it was as if the computer had just stayed on completely and not gone into hibernation.

In a Windows 8 PC, User account is "Standard" and Administrator account is different, in which how can I exclude some application which is from asking administrator password to execute?
My situation is specially for application updates such as java and/or adobe reader. Each time, when there is an update, it is asking administrator password to run the same.
Looking to add a specific tag/label based functionality to my computer.
I have tons and tons of programs, photos, videos, documents, and other files on my Windows 8 computer, and I need a way to organize and search/filter them that meets some very specific criteria. Unfortunately, as I am sure that most are aware of these days, organization by folder is extremely llimited.
For example, let's say that I have a bunch of pictures. I have one of me and my brother celebrating his birthday. I may want to file that picture by "family", "birthday", and "Severin" - so that if I search on any of those, I can find it. Another picture may be a family cookout, maybe I want to file it by "family" and "summer 2013".
The way Google uses labels in Gmail would seem an ideal system, if something like that could be added. Here are some other criteria that my ideal system would use:
-It would integrate itself into the operating system, so that when browsing I can access, see, and modify the tag of the files in the folder I am in without havening to launch a separate application. Access via right-click would be a plus.
-It would be location independent - once I have tagged/labelled a file, I could then move that file from one location on my hard drive to another, and still pull it easily via tag/label searching without (of course) needing to know or specify where it is.
-It would have to work with all file types. For example, even though I know Windows 8 have built in support for metadata tags, some video file types do not support it, and therefore Windows 8 cannot add tags to those files. Whatever the solution I wind up with, it must work on ALL files I care to tag.
-Multi-tagging is also a critical feature - so I can select a group of files and tag them all at once, either to add, modify, or remove a tag, without of course altering any pre-existing tags other than the intended.
-A bonus would be if it was aesthetically compatible with Windows 7/8, both in its look and feel and in it's UI.
-Finally, there would have to be a way for it to work across the network - I store all my files in a desktop Windows 8 Computer, but access the files from that computer, or from my laptop, or my media center, or my wife's computer. I would need to be able to do both searching and tagging from any computer with network access to the main one, even if I have to install the same software or plugins on each system individually.
This is an odd little problem, but I can't access DeviantArt on my HP Laptop.
A little history: I bought the laptop new. It had Windows 8 64 bit installed, and I immediately upgraded to 8.1, and at that time, I remember browsing the site looking for desktop wallpaper. Since then I upgraded with the Spring update, and any other update Windows gives me, so the laptop is up to date. I use FireFox (up to date) as a browser, and when I recently tried to access the site, I got a 'Connection has timed out' screen. I opened IE, and got a 'The operation timed out' screen.
Things I have tried:
ISP / Router -
The laptop I'm having the trouble with is wireless. Using an older desktop (XP 32 bit SP3 as up to date as it will ever get) that is hardwired into the router, I have no problems accessing the site. Using my cell phone on the same WiFi (Android OS with Chrome browser), I'm also able to access it.
Using an online proxy/anonymizer, I was able to get the site site to on the laptop.
HOSTS file -
Since the 'Connection has timed out' is the same one I get from an ad page the HOSTS file has blocked, I removed it and replaced it with a blank one. No effect on either browser. I should also note that this is the exact same HOSTS file and FireFox version I'm using on the XP machine without issue.
Anti-Virus -
I use Avast's free version, also up to date. I turned it off, again with no effect, and, again, it's the same that's running on the XP.
DNS -
I used the 'ipconfig /flushdns' to no effect. I even tried to use DeviantArt's IP address (199.15.160.100), again, nothing.
I ran a scan with my AV, MalwareBytes, and Kaspersky's TDSSKiller with no results on any of them. All other websites that I normally go to are working fine.
I'm getting a BSOD after some minutes working on my PC. I'm attaching the SF Diagnostic tool from the last crash.

How to specify which users can shutdown the computer from registry.
Using the local group policy this setting would be: Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Settings -> User Rights -> Shutdown the Computer
By default Administrators, Backup Operators and Users. The problem is that I need to change this settings form a script and I don't know where to look for it in the registry. I was thinking of using the reg add command in the script but I don't know what to change.
I tryed to use a program called regshot to analyse change to registry, so I made the change on Group policy and then looked at the changes but came to no conclusion.
