I have numerous hard drives and over the years due to bad housekeeping I have files all over the place, I am trying to tidy things up by transferring all files with the same extension onto a large memory stick so I can then transfer them back into specific folder, is there a program that will do this.

On Windows: there's a file. I don't know what it's called. I don't know where I've put it. I know I last used it 3 months ago and it's a Word doc. I don't know what drive I've put it on...
So I search the whole damn computer... for a doc file less than 6 months old
I then go fishing... go for a coffee... have a bath...
And when I get back 5 hours later... hey presto... Windows gives me a list of results.
I know there was some indexing programs - like Google Desk (erm... I think that's what it's called - I could just be making that up from my mind)... I know Microsoft had one as well... and a few other 3rd party programs where available.Where are they?
I have Windows 8 - I thought it would be built in?

On Mac it's part of the blood system - it's inbuilt and takes no overhead
I assume, every single time a file gets added or removed... the file record database is updated.
I have third party software that uses text files that have an extension of .mc. The originally were not set to open with any program. I accidentally set it so that a program called N1MM is now set to be the default.
How do I restore the register so that .mc files are not associated with any program?
Some file types appear in File Explorer with the file name extension and others do not. For example in this folder the .DLL file has the extension shown but not the .EXE files. What setting is responsible for this and how would I get more consistent behaviour?

I am running Excel 2007 and have been working on files and ONLY saving them to my USB memory stick.
On connecting the device to my PC (using an extension USB cord) I noticed a very brief minute blue like spark, and didn'y release until I tried to access my files that the entire content was wiped.
Excel cannot open the file 'LostFile_XLSX_608879.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.

In WinXP it was really easy but I hardly needed to use it as there seemed to be a lot more extensions available anyway back then. Unbelievably, (well, to me anyway), MS seem to have omitted '.flac'. Most noticeable are Nitro PDF Professional which doesn't always start when I click on a PDF file, sometimes it does, some times it doesn't. Quicken is often slow to start, some times the window opens then it waits for the display, sometimes the there is a wait until the window even opens. Same for xplorer2 opening and even selecting another folder. Going back to Windows 7 with almost the identical installed programs/utilities (about 40) the "problem" goes away.

I transferred many music files from a backup drive onto a new laptop running Windows 8, and found most renamed as numbered files with a .ptl extension. Found out that my backup drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex) doesn't like long filenames and renames them as referenced above. ("ptl" stands for "path too long"). I have been renaming them, dumping the ptl extension to get the files back as mp3's, but I get a confirmation window that I have to click "yes" to for each and every change I attempt. I'd love to kill the confirm popup for every file I change, it doubles the time involved for each file and I have enough work just renaming the files back to their original names. I've looked all over the control panel for something to uncheck to accomplish this, with no success.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently got a new laptop and have just installed Windows 8 onto it clean, I then upgraded to 8.1. Everything has been running perfectly but the HDD has two partitions so I wanted to put all my personal documents and files on a separate partition to my programs and Windows.
I achieved this by creating a new Admin account and moving the user's folder to the other partition and then I modified the path to my personal documents via regedit. Everything went according to plan and works fine so far.
However, one side effect of doing this seems to be that the live search found by hovering over the right hand side of the screen is now incredibly slow. Even keystrokes into the search bar suffer from some kind of lag and once a search query has been input it takes around 20-30 seconds to display results.
I have logged into the temporary account I used to move my personal documents and the search is fine on that so I'm guessing it's something to do with having the account on a separate HDD partition to the Windows files and folders.

If I want to search for a file that contains a specific show I'll open the folder then in the search field in the top right corner I'll type in "Christmas Carousel Craft Show". The problem is that every single file containing the word "christmas" or the word "carousel" or the word "craft" or the word "show" pops up! I just want to find the file with the phrase "Christmas Carousel Craft Show".

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have three machines that were running windows 8 on them. I used my MSDN to upgrade all 3 to 8.1 RTM. The only odd thing is search on just one of the PCs.
On this PC, when searching for items found in the control panel (such as "Indexing Options", etc) it seems to have an artificial 2-3 second delay before displaying the results under the search field. On the other two machines, they're near instant.
For those with 8.1, try it on your machine. Search for Indexing Options of File History and see how long it takes to show up, either by hitting Start and typing or Win+S...
Is there any reason why this may be? I've already rebuilt the index and decreased the size of it, as well as rebooted several times and ran CCleaner a bit. The only difference is this machine is Win 8.1 Pro, while the others are regular. I have disabled the Bing web search on all three and all other settings have been left alone.
I bought a Asus ROG with Windows 8 pre installed. I was making a logo with pixlr and saving it to my desktop when I noticed the only save option was "data file". So I saved it. I cant open it or naturally upload it to my website like I could with seven. Why is it saving with the additional suffix .dat example - logo.png.dat or logo.jpg.dat? Saving it to my desktop and trying to open it suggests I look for apps to open it...really!

I just recently changed my OS to Win 8.1 (from Win 7) and a java application I have (*.jar) is pointing to Python to open it. This is obviously wrong. If I download the latest version of Java and install it, the icon changes and the app works great. The "jar" externsion is associated with java. When the PC is rebooted a few days later, the icon is now the Python one and "jar" is now associated with Python.
How can I get it to "stick" that *.jar is associated with Java?
I fire up my laptop last night and install the patch Tuesday fixes. Afterwards I go to start Outlook 13; I click the tile and nothing happens. I say heck with it for the night, I still have Outlook 10 installed so I start that to get through the night. This morning I root around to see what is going on. I take a look in the program files directory and see that outlook.exe (along with a ton of other executable and dll's) have been renamed to outlook.exe.bak.
If you wonder why I have both 10 and 13 installed, that is how the '13 install left it. I purchased 10 late in its life and got the free upgrade to 13. When I installed 13 it left 10 out there.
Anyway, here's a screen shot.
Never had this problem before I have two files in an otherwise empty folder but there are no extensions after the file name. I can't add an extension to the files. I can't rename them or move them or delete them. Every time i try any of these things i am being told that: "the element wasn't found. It is no longer located in (insert name here) control the elements place and try again"
What that means. I even tried to delete them from the cmd...
After applying microsoft updates about a week ago, office stopped working. finally saw that executables were all renamed w/.bak ext. I tried renaming, just comes up with an error and still none of the office apps. work. I wanted to reinstall, but having problems finding key code, used several 3rd party key code finder apps. But will not find 0ffice 2013. shows office 2013 is installed in control panel/programs. I need access to my calendar desperately.

When i try to use the command on a folder, the folder just shows up as a normal hidden folder which can be easily viewed using show hidden items in view option. It looks as if every system file is not recognizing itself as a system file.
Also every folder in my system has appeared a desktop.ini and thumbs.db folder.
I am running Windows 8- 64 bit
How to make the 'Libraries' folder structure appear when doing a file open file save. In both case I can see the folders labeled Desktop, Documents, Downloads, etc. but I cannot see the Libraries folder.

I don't know how I did it but I got both Windows 7 File Recovery and Windows 8 File History active at the same time. I upgraded from Win 7 to 8 Pro and transferred settings so win 7 file recovery was already active, when I tried to turn on win 8 file recovery I got a message saying I cant because win 7 FR was active. So I deactivated win 7 FR then activated win 8 FR, for giggles I went back and turned on win 7 FR and it worked. Now I have both active, from what I have read this was not possible. Did I break my OS or am I just lucky?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn Windows 8.0 File History, it had the nasty habit of duplicating your library files on your backup ( in my case, my external USB backup drive ( Replica 2 Terabyte ). By DUPLICATING, I mean they get copied over and over and over again... This happens to ALL of them, even though you have not touched the majority of them for YEARS. (File History is suppose to copy them over the FIRST time, then copy a new copy with a new name (old name plus date) if you edit the file in any way). I turned of file indexing on ALL my drives, except my C: drive, to see if that would stop it ( this is recommended in many threads on other sites ).

If I right click on the folder and go to send to all I get is the dvd drive unless I shift right click first then a drop down of more selections appear but not send to compress. The SFX files unzips the contents to a folder on my hard disk (no problem), but then tries to run another program (installer.exe) that is located in the extracted folder.
The program fromm inside the SFX runs fine if I set the compatibility to XP manually, but the problem is that the the SFX extracts the files to a different location each time it is run.
Is there a global way to make a program (installer.exe) run in compatibility mode wherever it exists?

Turned the PC on this morning and all my files (audio , picture and video) now have the file type at the end of the file name so instead of cars42 it reads cars42.mpg same for all other file types, Why?

I have not changed any file specs, it just appeared today. I have many thousand files and need them to be short for work, i don't want the added .mpg,.jpg, .mp3 etc added. Do i just system restore?
