This means Chrome browser on Win 8 launched from "Metro" screen doesn't support extensions and apps that use plugins?
I'm using Windows 8.1 with the latest updated google chrome browser.
What happens when i scroll i keep getting squares, Like this.
It took a while to get a pic of these because they would disappear supper fast. Here is a pic of them.
Is it possible my new windows 8 computer does not have a browser installed? It's been a week, I keep searching, can't find one anywhere. I installed chrome on it, that works. I assume I can download IE free from MS, But IE has to already be on this thing someplace. Where is it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI got a HP Envy m6 Sleekbook laptop about three months ago. I installed Firefox and Chrome right away, although I used Firefox almost exclusively.
After about a month, Firefox just stopped working. I would click the icon, and it would light up (and the blue circle would appear over the cursor) as if it was about to open, but after a few seconds it stopped loading and the icon went back to normal, as if I had never clicked it. It just kind of... gave up. I restarted the computer and tried opening it from a different shortcut, and then directly from the file, but the problem persisted.
I tried uninstalling and re-installing Firefox twice, but it didn't solve the issue. Finally, I abandoned Firefox and switched to using Chrome.
Now, after using Chrome without a hitch for almost two months, Chrome has spontaneously started exactly the same behavior- BUT now I can open Firefox.
I'd really like to keep using Chrome, since I finally had it set up the way I like (I have quite a few bookmarks and quirky little preferences).
Some how, some way I have turned on some kind of Google/Chrome desktop on my Asus ME400C. It opens up when I click on the chrome icon or something brings it up (see attached image).
How to turn this off, all I want is chrome not Google's ?am desktop. Second, how do I change the default browser?
I bought a Asus ROG with Windows 8 pre installed. I was making a logo with pixlr and saving it to my desktop when I noticed the only save option was "data file". So I saved it. I cant open it or naturally upload it to my website like I could with seven. Why is it saving with the additional suffix .dat example - logo.png.dat or logo.jpg.dat? Saving it to my desktop and trying to open it suggests I look for apps to open it...really!

How do I restore the register so that .mc files are not associated with any program?
Some file types appear in File Explorer with the file name extension and others do not. For example in this folder the .DLL file has the extension shown but not the .EXE files. What setting is responsible for this and how would I get more consistent behaviour?

I just recently changed my OS to Win 8.1 (from Win 7) and a java application I have (*.jar) is pointing to Python to open it. This is obviously wrong. If I download the latest version of Java and install it, the icon changes and the app works great. The "jar" externsion is associated with java. When the PC is rebooted a few days later, the icon is now the Python one and "jar" is now associated with Python.
How can I get it to "stick" that *.jar is associated with Java?
I fire up my laptop last night and install the patch Tuesday fixes. Afterwards I go to start Outlook 13; I click the tile and nothing happens. I say heck with it for the night, I still have Outlook 10 installed so I start that to get through the night. This morning I root around to see what is going on. I take a look in the program files directory and see that outlook.exe (along with a ton of other executable and dll's) have been renamed to outlook.exe.bak.
If you wonder why I have both 10 and 13 installed, that is how the '13 install left it. I purchased 10 late in its life and got the free upgrade to 13. When I installed 13 it left 10 out there.

I am running Excel 2007 and have been working on files and ONLY saving them to my USB memory stick.
On connecting the device to my PC (using an extension USB cord) I noticed a very brief minute blue like spark, and didn'y release until I tried to access my files that the entire content was wiped.
Excel cannot open the file 'LostFile_XLSX_608879.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.
Well I think it looks fine to me, and I endeavoureed to use the Open & Repair when openng the file too, with no luck.
Never had this problem before I have two files in an otherwise empty folder but there are no extensions after the file name. I can't add an extension to the files. I tried renaming, just comes up with an error and still none of the office apps. work. I wanted to reinstall, but having problems finding key code, used several 3rd party key code finder apps. Most noticeable are Nitro PDF Professional which doesn't always start when I click on a PDF file, sometimes it does, some times it doesn't. Quicken is often slow to start, some times the window opens then it waits for the display, sometimes the there is a wait until the window even opens. Same for xplorer2 opening and even selecting another folder. Going back to Windows 7 with almost the identical installed programs/utilities (about 40) the "problem" goes away.

If I download KB2919442 directly from Microsoft and try to install it manually it says "This update is not applicable to your computer"

I transferred many music files from a backup drive onto a new laptop running Windows 8, and found most renamed as numbered files with a .ptl extension. Found out that my backup drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex) doesn't like long filenames and renames them as referenced above. ("ptl" stands for "path too long"). I have been renaming them, dumping the ptl extension to get the files back as mp3's, but I get a confirmation window that I have to click "yes" to for each and every change I attempt. I'd love to kill the confirm popup for every file I change, it doubles the time involved for each file and I have enough work just renaming the files back to their original names. I've looked all over the control panel for something to uncheck to accomplish this, with no success.

I was not able to find the results I needed via Google keywords, I have all my personal files (music, videos, photos, documents) on a separate hard drive so the library folders are directed to the HDD. I was keeping my music specifically on another disc and have now moved the collection onto my files disc so you see the "D:" folder which is the missing music drive directory and I do not know how to delete it.
I need to add a Music folder into the library but do not know how...or change the name of the "D:" folder to "Music" and point it to my the files HDD.
My husband has an HP Envy desktop running Windows 8 with a new HP 23tm Touch Screen Monitor. For the last couple of weeks, sometimes when he lowers an open browser to the task bar, he can no longer bring it back up. It show the small preview and it is still open but it won't go enlarge. Right click, left click, close then open, it's just done. At first restarting the computer worked. He found that when it happens he can switch to a different browser and that will work. When he has a browser open on the desktop and tries to open another program it opens but stays frozen to the taskbar. Lower the browser and it still wont enlarge. This seems to happen when it goes into screen save mode. We ran all checks (drivers, disk, virus) and ran all updates.

However, I found that firefox only opened in 'desktop' and I couldn't work out how to open it as an app, like I did with internet explorer. I uninstalled firefox and repinned explorer to start screen and toolbar and reset it as default only to find it too wouldn't open on start screen now, coming up with the message shown by the image. . View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I get to the part in the Windows 8 installer that it tells me what needs to come to my attention, instead of opening a little browser inside of the program as I guess it's trying to do, it opens up 2 tabs in whatever browser is my default. This would be fine if the buttons in the web pages still modified the actual installer, but they don't and therefore the installer is effectively stopped.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been having a network problem since Refreshing Windows 8.1 Pro Update 64 bit on one of my PC's. I've been able to see other PC's OK but unable to see some devices (eg Diskstation NAS etc) on my network (all connected using Ethernet cables).
I've tried all sorts of things to cure the problem and all to no avail.
I just noticed that in Services there was no Computer Browser so I guess this is my problem. I copied over the browser.dll file from another PC (using the same operating system) to the Windows/System32 folder but after a reboot there was still no Computer Browser in Services. I ran a couple of scripts I found, a registry hack and something else to restore the Computer Browser then I uninstalled the Client for Microsoft Networks, rebooted and re-installed the client.
Now when I look in Services it's listed as Browser instead of Computer Browser and in the Description column it says "Failed to read description. Error Code: 15100. The error code has now changed to error code 2.
What I can try next other than a clean re-install?
