Maintenance :: Attempting To Turn Off File Extension Change Confirm Popup?

Feb 8, 2013

I transferred many music files from a backup drive onto a new laptop running Windows 8, and found most renamed as numbered files with a .ptl extension. Found out that my backup drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex) doesn't like long filenames and renames them as referenced above. ("ptl" stands for "path too long"). I have been renaming them, dumping the ptl extension to get the files back as mp3's, but I get a confirmation window that I have to click "yes" to for each and every change I attempt. I'd love to kill the confirm popup for every file I change, it doubles the time involved for each file and I have enough work just renaming the files back to their original names. I've looked all over the control panel for something to uncheck to accomplish this, with no success.

Enable Confirm Window On Deletion - Stop Start Menu From Switching To Menu View And Change Taskbar Transparency

Mar 30, 2014

I've recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. First question is how do i enable a confirm window to pop up when deleting something? I don't like how i can just hit delete and it moves it (Only to the recycle bin, but i'd rather it didn't).

Secondly how do i stop the start menu from switching to that Windows 8 menu view? I did originally change it so that when you click the start menu (Bottom left in) it would actually bring up the start menu, but it seems to have reverted. On top of this how do i change it so that pressing the Windows button brings up the start menu rather than the Windows 8 menu view thing?

Thirdly how do i enable file details when in Windows Explorer. So in Windows 7 when you select a file it would give the size, name, author, date last edited etc in the details pane. How do i get that now?

Finally, how do i change my task bars transparency?

Source Path Too Long - Attempting To Back Up All Steam Games Into One File?

Jul 21, 2014

This happened when I attempted to back up all my Steam Games into one file. It crashed and now I'm stuck iwth a Folder within a Folder which as a really long name (basically about 50 names) I cannot delete the file. It's advising me to rename it which I've tired but fail miserably. I attempted to use CMD like this:

C:UsersName>DEL "?ESteam Backup Games"

?ESteam Backup Games*, Are you sure (Y/N) Y

Nothing happens.. the folder is still there.

I'm pretty much stuck and I cannot remove this folder.

I also created another similar to this but the Folders are empty and the name of both the folders is called "Steam BackUp Games 2" yet i can't shift+del it...

Excel Cannot Open File - Format Or Extension Is Not Valid?

Jul 21, 2014

I am running Excel 2007 and have been working on files and ONLY saving them to my USB memory stick.

On connecting the device to my PC (using an extension USB cord) I noticed a very brief minute blue like spark, and didn'y release until I tried to access my files that the entire content was wiped.

Excel cannot open the file 'LostFile_XLSX_608879.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.

Well I think it looks fine to me, and I endeavoureed to use the Open & Repair when openng the file too, with no luck.

I have a Toshiba laptop, it's less then a year old and came with Windows 8 pre-installed, so i don't have a disc. It's less then a year old and it hadn't had a single issue up until last night? I've tried rebooting to watch for options watch for booting options but it doesn't give me any choices at all just goes straight to Diagnosing and attempting repairs!

How To Add File Extension To The List In Control Panel / Default Programs

Feb 16, 2014

I'd like to add a file extension to the list given in Control Panel/Default Programs. In WinXP it was really easy but I hardly needed to use it as there seemed to be a lot more extensions available anyway back then. Unbelievably, (well, to me anyway), MS seem to have omitted '.flac'. How do I go about it?

Some Programs Slow To Load - Not Recognise Association To File Extension

Apr 28, 2013

Some programs are becoming slow to load or do not recognize their connection to a file extension. Most noticeable are Nitro PDF Professional which doesn't always start when I click on a PDF file, sometimes it does, some times it doesn't. Quicken is often slow to start, some times the window opens then it waits for the display, sometimes the there is a wait until the window even opens. Same for xplorer2 opening and even selecting another folder. Going back to Windows 7 with almost the identical installed programs/utilities (about 40) the "problem" goes away.

File Access Denied Popup When Renaming Shortcuts For Metro Start Menu

Jun 8, 2012

I've been getting a "File Access Denied, You'll need to provide administrator permission to rename this file", popup window even with UAC turned off?

The files in question are shortcuts in the C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms.
It also happens in C:UsersUser-NameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms.

Basically what I'm doing is renaming the title of the tiles/programs displayed on the Metro Start screen. If there is a better way I'm all for that as having to click continue every time is getting old.

So I deactivated win 7 FR then activated win 8 FR, for giggles I went back and turned on win 7 FR and it worked. Now I have both active, from what I have read this was not possible. Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 File History File Duplication?

Oct 30, 2013

In Windows 8.0 File History, it had the nasty habit of duplicating your library files on your backup ( in my case, my external USB backup drive ( Replica 2 Terabyte ). By DUPLICATING, I mean they get copied over and over and over again... This happens to ALL of them, even though you have not touched the majority of them for YEARS. (File History is suppose to copy them over the FIRST time, then copy a new copy with a new name (old name plus date) if you edit the file in any way). I turned of file indexing on ALL my drives, except my C: drive, to see if that would stop it ( this is recommended in many threads on other sites ).

Stuck On (Preparing Windows) When Attempting To Login

Feb 15, 2013

I have 2 accounts on this PC, one is a MS account, the other is the built-in Administrator account, which I renamed and assigned a complex password to make it difficult for anyone to get into. However, I recently disabled the Admin account with the "net user administrator /active:no" command, and then deleted both the Administrator and Enigma (the name which I renamed it to) folders in C:Users. I also went into Control Panel and made sure that the user is gone, it does not appear now. I can still log into my PC via the MS account since it has admin rights.

But after rebooting the Admin/Enigma account still appears on the login screen and asks for a password. So I reenter the old password and it then hangs with a "Preparing Windows" message. Then I do a hard reset and log into the MS account, I can see that a TEMP folder has been created at C:Users, which I assume was created as a result of trying to log in as Admin/Enigma. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that the PC still remembers the password and other info associated with the account, and that info must still be stored somewhere in the Registry. That seems to be the only logical cause of the issue.

So, I need locating that info and resetting it, because I intend to reactivate Admin again, but this time I'm going to leave it alone. I had deleted it in the 1st place because of the appearance of 2 usernames for the account at C:Users, and found that odd, so I figured I could get rid of both and then recreate/reset. I rarely use the account anyways because it is a security risk, and only to do a handful of things that I've had trouble doing with the MS account, despite it having admin privilidges.

Attempting Repairs Message After Windows 8.1 Update

Apr 11, 2014

I have a Toshiba Encore, which I updated. When I start it up it has the message 'Preparing Automatic repair', then a black screen and a Windows windows flashes up for a split second. I then get the message 'Diagnosing your PC', the 'Attempting Repairs'.

I then get a blue screen with the title 'Automatic Repair' with the message: Automatic Repair couldnt repair your PC...... Log file C:windowssystem32logfilessrtsrttrail.txt

There are two options 'Shutdown' and 'Advanced options'.

'Advanced options' gives:
Continue'- exit to windows 8.1
'Use a device'
'Troubleshoot'
'Turn off your PC'

Troubleshoot gives:
'Refresh your PC'
'Reset your PC'
'Toshiba maintenece'
'Advanced Options'

Advanced Options gives:
'System restore'- ive tried this but there are no restore points
'System image recovery'
'Start up repair'- Tried this, just goes to 'Preparing automatic repair'
'Command prompt'- This works
'UEFI Firmware Settings'
'Start-up Settings'- Tried this, just goes to 'Preparing automatic repair'

So apart from refreshing and resetting which I haven't tried yet, I can get into a Command prompt. The command prompt starts in X:. When I open Notepad and browse the file system i notice that X: is called 'Boot'. I'm wondering whether the 8.1 update has put something on my PC that makes it try to boot from X: instead of C:. Is there any way I can check what drive the PC is trying to boot from?

The log file states
Root cause found: Boot manager failed to find OS loader
Repair action: File repair
Result:failed. Error code 0xa

Repair action: Boot configuratio data store repair
Result:failed. Error code 0x490

Change File Type Associations?

May 4, 2013

Default programs> Set your default programs > (Program name goes here) > Choose defaults for this program.

Even though Firefox is already registered with file types such as: .html, .htm, .ftp, etc, it won't let me uncheck them as well as for other programs.

I don't want to change the Firefox associations, though.

I've also tried : Default programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program . To no avail either.

FileTypesMan didn't work much of either.

It appears third party software and the usual method, aka Default programs, can no longer change some file type associations so easily now.

For example .jpg files open in Photos app, fine, but when I right-click and choose "edit" Paint opens up. I want to change it from Paint to Photoshop and there seems to be no way to do that.

In Windows 7 I used Creative Elements Power Tools for this, but it is not compatible with Windows 8.
