Security :: How To Turn Back On Windows Defender And Turn Off Norton 360
Jun 26, 2014I am trying to turn back on my Window's Defender and turn off my Norton 360.
View 3 RepliesI am trying to turn back on my Window's Defender and turn off my Norton 360.
View 3 RepliesI just uninstalled the trial version of Norton and I am unable to turn on Windows Defender. I have seen this problem repeatedly in the forum, but I'm still not sure how to get it corrected. Windows 8.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have recently built a PC myself and had no issues whatsoever, until the other day when an Action Centre notification popped up. For some reason, Spyware and Virus protection have both turned off automatically and when I am prompted to turn them back on, I get an error saying "Action Centre can't turn on Windows Defender. Please try again later."
I have tried the services.msc method and tried to activate WinDefend that way, but encounter another error "Windows could not start the WinDefend service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."
I have looked up this issue with no resolution yet - as most of the solutions are for people that have installed third party Protection Programs like AVG, Norton etc.
I haven't installed any programs like that, and have also checked in the Control Panel to make sure one didn't install itself automatically with an install of another program.
cannot turn on windows defender. just get message box saying turned off.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Win 8 Pro and I went to check my Windows Defender via 'all apps'
When I click on it I just get the following message...........
"Windows Defender has been turned off and it isn't monitoring your computer"
I've tried a few things but seem to come up with the same message whichever way I try to start Defender. obviously I'm a bit worried that my machine might be unprotected.
I just got my Toshiba laptop Tuesday and I'm having a hard time turning Windows Defender on. I saw the tutorial, but I'm almost totally blind and I use the Jaws screen reader, so I can only use the keyboard and not the mouse.
I pressed the windows key, which used to bring up the search box, but now does something weird, and started typing defender, which brought up the Windows Defender app. When I pressed enter, a dialog box, or what sounded like a dialog box, popped up and said Windows Defender has been turned off, but there's no option to enable it, just a message that says to go to action center but doesn't do anything and a close button. I tried to go to Action Center, but it was really confusing. I found something that let me turn it on, but it still says it's off when I go to check it.
Not sure if the Norton the laptop came with is balking me and not letting me use Defender or what. I tried to uninstall the truckload of programs from Norton using add or remove programs, but I assume it opened Norton to do the uninstall because I heard Norton internet security dialog, but that was all it said. I'm not sure if it was uninstalling or what, as Norton doesn't work at all with Jaws. I called Toshiba because I was having a few more problems that they were able to fix, but when I asked about Defender, they transferred me to their paid tech support people who wanted to charge me an arm and a leg to do remote access, when all I wanted were instructions on how to do it myself. Is there any way to turn Defender on without having to mess with Norton or do I need to get someone to uninstall it for me?
Also, is Defender an actual antivirus program or just something to be used along with an antivirus? Security Essentials was recommended to me by an expert in adaptive technology for the blind because it was the most accessible antivirus program there was, but when I attempted to download it I found out you have to use Defender now with Win 8. What confuses me is that the Toshiba tech support worker said Defender wasn't an antivirus program. Can I use that or do I need to go the next best route and get Avast, which I hear is sort of accessible?
how can I turn window defender on?

Done a search, looked at System & Security in control panel, to no avail
I recently install Left 4 Dead on my laptop and it changes my font to bold, not only in the game but all in my system, my default font is now bold.
I uninstall the game but the font was not changed. I went to Font Settings on Control Panel and make it to default, it now go backs to normal but not for all programs.
For instance, my Firefox's font was still bold, changing to default also I can't. So how do I turn all fonts back to normal? Look at image and see how my Google looks like, it's bold I want all back to normal. I think the font is Arial Bold.
it happens from yesterday, the problem is when I playing games on my Dell inspiron N4050 and then the main power where the charger pluged in is turn off (it is the most problem in my country that there is heavy short fall of power), the laptop is remain ON just for 2 or 3 seconds and then its suddenly OFF. its not happening before, why is that,? why is the laptop didn't get power from the battery.?
.
when not playing games. and the main power (electricity) is gone, then this problem is not occurred.
I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and all has been great except one thing. When I leave the computer for about 10 minutes or so, the display turns off like it is supposed to. If I want to turn the display back on though, I find I'm unable to with the mouse, keyboard, or power button. It's like it is stuck in limbo and I have to restart the PC.
View 1 Replies View Related DVD drive is powered off, Lenovo X230, Windows 8.1 64 bit and found that in the safe mode (minimal), the problem does not exist. For trouble I decided to try other options of safe boot to have further information. After restarting in safe mode "Active directory repair"', I can not turn back to Normal Startup. I see only pure blue screen with only one button with restart and shut down, there no any key on the keyboard who work, left click not working too. And I can not access to msconfig and startup manager to change this setting.
But I have a bootable disk and I can edit registry but I do not know what do I have to do to get back Normal startup.
I just bought a windows 8.1 Dell laptop and I am having horrible issues with Malware. I have installed a malware removal tool that I pretty much run daily because the issue keeps coming back. I cannot turn on my firewall because it is being controlled by McAfee and I have to purchase it to turn it on, same issue exists with Windows Defender, it has been disabled which really seems ridiculous to me. Basically my browsers are being hijacked to use a different search engine and it opens extra tabs on every load which makes browsing slow.

I was having problems with my new computer (HP Envy m6, running windows 8). It was not signing me out properly and would not shut down. I thought that maybe I just needed to update the windows software. But upon updating the software and turning my computer back on it gave me a black screen with one blue box that says "Selected boot image did not authenticate. Press <Enter> to Continue. If I press Enter the computer the computer turns off (turning back on displays the same message). If left on nothing changes and it will continue to run the computer.

I looked online and this seems to be a common Windows 8 problem but I didn't find any good answers.
I'm not ready to run refresh yet.
Windows Defender is up and running and I'm using Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware every day.
Is it possible to disable/turn off this skydrive forever in windows ....

Whenever I turn off my windows 8.1 desktop it doesn't actually shut down. I can hear the computer running still and all the LED lights are still on but there is no video.

I have difficulty to turn on Location because this option in grey (can not drag to on). How to turn on this option?
I try to attach snapshot from privacy configuration.
When I turned on computer it showed a message that system did not turn on properly. It gave me choices what to do:
-refresh PC
-reset PC
-advanced options
I've chosen system recovery in advanced options. Everything would be fine, if it would keep same settings before the problem occurred. I spent a lot of time getting settings right. And that would be okay, if it happened once. But it happened second time in period of two weeks. I don't want that error happens again.
My computer specifications:
-OS Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
-NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650
-Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz
-120 GB SSD disc and 931 GB HDD.
Just like the title says, when I'm in the control panel I clicked on the Turn Windows Features on and off. A pop up menu comes up but it's blank. It used to have a list of items with a check box next to them. I searched the internet and can't come up with anything. I waited a while for the menu to pop but no list came up after a half hour.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have windows 8.1 on a computer I am just trying to start using. However, when I transfer any of my personal files from the old computer they all end up as read-only. I try to change them, but they always revert back to read-only. The directories in the new computer are classified as read-only also, and cannot be changed. How can I solve this?

View 6 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to turn off the monitor when my Windows 8 PC goes into sleep/standby mode? Right now the monitor stays on with a "HDMI input" message bouncing around the screen.
View 4 Replies View Relatedlast night i did a factory reset and of course it took all night but in the morning when i checked it it was off so when i pressed the power button it appeared to be starting up a usual then suddenly the screen lust like faded to black but it was still on and this lust repeats itself the samsung logo comes up it appears to be loading then it all just goes black.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe display and the sleep feature timers do not work. I just did a complete restore to try and correct this problem and another problem, which was no restore points and no ability to create one. The restore points are working for now, I mean that I was able to create a restore point. The display and sleep timer, not so, still a problem.
I've had this desktop Windows 8 computer since November and honestly I don't know if this has been a problem the whole time or not. Definitely, not the display, I know it has worked, but the sleep timer I'm not sure. I set the timer and just assume it sleeps and then goes into hibernation after a certain amount of time. With all the refreshing and restoring and changing over to this computer, I've not been paying much attention to the sound of the fan or the missing orange color on the power button (not visible, on the side of the computer).
I've set the timer through the Power Options feature in the Control Panel to 10 minutes for the sleep and to turn off the display to 3 minutes. Neither of them respond after set times. The computer is still wide awake and the display is not gone.
I have also gone to the "Change Advance Power Settings" menu box and turned off the hybrid sleep, which didn't work, and the Multimedia Settings in this menu box to turn on the setting "Allow The Computer To Sleep". Neither of these fixes did anything.
How can the computer not respond to something so basic and fundamental to its design?
Lastly, I'm wondering how this idea of powering down works at all. What I would like is for the computer to sleep after 20 minutes and then go into hibernation after 45 minutes. This would be when I'm done for the day. I have set the hibernation time in the "Change Advance Power Settings" menu box, but of course that does not respond either.
I realised you cannot search your computer with Windows Search disabled in Windows 8/8.1 Metro, I have looked for the entry in the Windows Features / Services but could not find it. (I previously turned it off, now I cannot see the entry).
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was trying to install Windows through a usb on a PC. It had an installation of Windows 8 already and worked flawlessly. I had then tried accessing the BIOS and I turned off Legacy boot. Ever since then, the PC shows no display. It would first give a few beeping sounds (I don't know the exact number), and outputs such as the mouse, keyboard etc had lit up. Now, however, it gives 3 BEEPS and the keyboard and mouse do not work. In both occasions, there would be no display available. Specs are as follows: Intel i5 2300, 8gb of Ram, Intel DH61WW, 550W PSU
What I've tried: Making sure nothing is loose (ie wires), clearing any dust, disconnecting everything but the power. From what I've researched, 3 Beeps indicates a ram or motherboard issue. The CPU, GPU, PSU and hard drives seem to be running, however. The light on the motherboard also turns on.
