Security :: BitLocker - Encrypt OS Drive Without TPM If It Is Present

Feb 12, 2014

I am "fresh" with BitLocker encryption. I need to encrpyt OS drive of laptop with Windows 8.1 and TPM chip. I have read few articles about encryption of OS drives with BitLocker ( with TPM / without TPM ) but never got a direct answer to my questions. So ... I want to ask:

1. Is it possible to encrypt the drive without using the TPM in case that there is TPM chip in the laptop because from what I have read BitLocker work with TPM by default but I don't want to use it. I have had already encrypt other laptops without TPM chips by setting up the group policies ( Computer Configuration Administrative Templates Windows Components Bit Locker Drive Encryption Operating System Drives and double click on Require additional authentication at startup ) and ... is it possible something like this to be made in this case ( when the laptop have TPM in it ).

What I want is the user to be asked for password on startup, recovery key to be saved to a file on external device( not to use usb flash drive as a key ) and to be possible simply to change my HDD in the future without need to manage TPM.

If this is not possible ... here is my second question:

2. Can I setup encryption with TPM like that:
- user to be asked for PASSWORD on startup
- recovery key to be saved to a file ( I don't want every time to use usb flash drive with recovery on it to unlock the drive ... what I want is just user to be asked for a password and when he enter the correct password the drive to be unlocked ).

Security :: How To Encrypt A Folder Of Pictures

Mar 9, 2013

A few days ago I decided to encrypt a folder of pictures. I decided to do this so that the pictures would stop showing up in that pictures app window, so that only I could access said pictures, and because I wanted to know how encryption worked. So far, the pictures continue to show up in my pictures app and nobody can access the file, and I now want to just move the pictures to an external drive. However, I can't find the file (it disappeared upon encryption) and so I can't decrypt it in order to move it. How do I find the file for decryption? (I have the key, just can't find the door, so to speak)

Windows 8 PRO / BitLocker To Encrypt System Drive - Always Invalid Password

Dec 4, 2012

I use Windows 8 PRO and BitLocker to encrypt my system drive. My notebook hasn't TPM module, so I changed group rules and allow to use BitLocker without TPM. I enabled BitLocker, write key backup to flash drive and use PIN to unlock BitLocker.

Everything works fine except one think... when I start computer, there is BitLocker start screen and I must write PIN.

Always, really ALWAYS first-time password is invalid. Tried to write it very, very slow and I'm sure its correct... but BitLocker said it isn't.

I must delete it and write again... click enter and... pass is valid! I try to use insert to show password - in this case, first-time password are correct and Bitlocker accepts its. Unfortunatelly, it isn't secure method.

Security :: Cannot Turn On Windows Defender

Mar 1, 2014

I have recently built a PC myself and had no issues whatsoever, until the other day when an Action Centre notification popped up. For some reason, Spyware and Virus protection have both turned off automatically and when I am prompted to turn them back on, I get an error saying "Action Centre can't turn on Windows Defender. Please try again later."

I have tried the services.msc method and tried to activate WinDefend that way, but encounter another error "Windows could not start the WinDefend service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."

I have looked up this issue with no resolution yet - as most of the solutions are for people that have installed third party Protection Programs like AVG, Norton etc.

I haven't installed any programs like that, and have also checked in the Control Panel to make sure one didn't install itself automatically with an install of another program.

Security :: How To Turn On Windows Defender Using Keyboard

Jun 6, 2013

I just got my Toshiba laptop Tuesday and I'm having a hard time turning Windows Defender on. I saw the tutorial, but I'm almost totally blind and I use the Jaws screen reader, so I can only use the keyboard and not the mouse.

I pressed the windows key, which used to bring up the search box, but now does something weird, and started typing defender, which brought up the Windows Defender app. When I pressed enter, a dialog box, or what sounded like a dialog box, popped up and said Windows Defender has been turned off, but there's no option to enable it, just a message that says to go to action center but doesn't do anything and a close button. I tried to go to Action Center, but it was really confusing. I found something that let me turn it on, but it still says it's off when I go to check it.

Not sure if the Norton the laptop came with is balking me and not letting me use Defender or what. I tried to uninstall the truckload of programs from Norton using add or remove programs, but I assume it opened Norton to do the uninstall because I heard Norton internet security dialog, but that was all it said. I'm not sure if it was uninstalling or what, as Norton doesn't work at all with Jaws. I called Toshiba because I was having a few more problems that they were able to fix, but when I asked about Defender, they transferred me to their paid tech support people who wanted to charge me an arm and a leg to do remote access, when all I wanted were instructions on how to do it myself. Is there any way to turn Defender on without having to mess with Norton or do I need to get someone to uninstall it for me?

Also, is Defender an actual antivirus program or just something to be used along with an antivirus? Security Essentials was recommended to me by an expert in adaptive technology for the blind because it was the most accessible antivirus program there was, but when I attempted to download it I found out you have to use Defender now with Win 8. What confuses me is that the Toshiba tech support worker said Defender wasn't an antivirus program. Can I use that or do I need to go the next best route and get Avast, which I hear is sort of accessible?

Security :: Windows 8.1 Dell Laptop - Malware / Cannot Turn On Firewall

Sep 15, 2014

I just bought a windows 8.1 Dell laptop and I am having horrible issues with Malware. I have installed a malware removal tool that I pretty much run daily because the issue keeps coming back. I cannot turn on my firewall because it is being controlled by McAfee and I have to purchase it to turn it on, same issue exists with Windows Defender, it has been disabled which really seems ridiculous to me. Basically my browsers are being hijacked to use a different search engine and it opens extra tabs on every load which makes browsing slow.

How To Turn Off Library Links On Old Boot Drive

Mar 20, 2013

When booting from his new SSD boot drive, Leo will end up with "errors" on the hard drives that need to be "fixed" IF he accesses any libraries that he set up on his old hard drive still is the computer.

My friend Leo, installed and boots from an SSD I gave him. He loves it. He also like that he can still boot from his old hard drive. If he accesses something via the library links that he had set up tho, it causes Windows 8 to report disk errors on boot that need to be fixed.

How would Leo go about disabling the libraries that he has set up? And is this the real issue for the errors? (Leo says that that he gets no errors unless he accesses something via the libraries).

I saw mention of backing up the cetificate which sems to complicate the process.. if you can decrypt a folder you have encrypted, why is it necessary to backup the certificate? Is it because the first time a certificate is generated and without it you cannot open the folder?

If so where do you back the certificate up to in case of drive failure?

How To Set ATA Security Password On Drive

Aug 15, 2013

So, the device uses an eMMC for the drive. Is it possible to set the ATA security password on the drive, just like you can for regular hard drives? I don't see an option in the BIOS to set it. Perhaps the option is there somewhere though.

I basically want to protect the data on the tablet. I don't think the BIOS administrator/user password provides sufficient security since that password can be reset and the data can then be accessed. I don't want to use software encryption since I don't want to slow the device down.

Security :: How To Enable BitLocker Support (unlock Drive) In WinPE 5

May 18, 2014

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and I am running Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1.

I have been unsuccessful at building a WinPE image that provides BitLocker support. I searched around the internet and found many posts. Eventually, I ended up trying to build it with the various added packages I discovered in the various posts. However, in the end, none worked and this is the message I am getting after booting into my WinPE environment:

manage-bde.exe - Application Error

The instruction at 0xa20afa3b referenced memory at 0x0000013d.
The memory could not be read.
Click on OK to terminate the program

Here are the commands I eventually ended up using to build my WinPE image:

Code: dism /image:C:Bootmacriummount /add-package /packagepath:"C:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits8.1Assessment and Deployment KitWindows Preinstallation Environmentamd64WinPE_OCsWinPE-WMI.cab"dism /image:C:Bootmacriummount /add-package /packagepath:"C:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits8.1Assessment and Deployment KitWindows Preinstallation Environment

[Code] ....

But even with all that included, I still have the same error about the memory.

Will WinPE 5.0 x64 bootable environment work on a TPM-enabled machine? If so, how did you build your custom WinPE environment?

Security :: Can Change Local Security Policy Entries From RegEdit?

Mar 8, 2014

Which registry settings should I change to set the top two default Windows rules back to 'Unrestricted' ?

I set up some rules in the local security policy some time ago when there was fuss in the news about the cryptolocker virus. They looked a lot like the rules above (I found that screenshot online as I can't take one myself, read on..)

Today I was installing some software that wanted access to the areas I restricted. I temporarily disabled the rules, then re-enabled them. Being a dumbass I also set the top two rules (which are Windows default rules) to Disallowed!

Over the following 10 minutes various aspects of my PC stopped working, telling me that the local security policy prevented access. I couldn't even get into the Control Panel or the Local Security Policy screen to change it back, once I realised what I had done. I rebooted the machine - it won't come back up

I've tried a system restore by booting from the installer on USB (which did not work, it grumbled that it could not restore due a file locked by anti-virus) so I think I've got two options:

Refresh my system using the Windows 8 tools - but I suspect that might leave the LSP rules in place, as it retains my settings & preferences.Hand edit the registry to correct the settings.

Option 2 is looking best, I can get into RegEdit from the recovery console, but I'm not sure what to edit and what to set it to? This is on Windows 8.1 Pro...

Security :: Temporary Disabling IE Content Security Blocking

Mar 28, 2014

I came to some trouble installing CorelDraw software which apparently uses for it's setup launcher web active container performed by IE core. If I launch setup, the setup windows is evidently noninitialized showing the top warning band about active content being blocked for security reasons. Even allowing active content by selecting from the top bar menu doesn't make the setup continue. So now I'd need to temporarily bypass all IE's security checks, ie. allow everything. What I already did was browsing the security tab in IE options and allowing most of the choices in branches ActiveX controls and plugin modules + Scripting (Local Intranet). On Advanced tab I have checked in Security branch Allow execution of active content from CD discs on this computer + Allow execution of active content from files on this computer. Nothing of these affecting the installer to run (ie. I still see then active content blocking bar).
