XBMC (my htpc software) can not write changes to secondary drive as when I turn off Read-Only it automatically turns back on again.
I can give further information but i didn't want to swap you guys with details unless they are needed, but just in case it is a windows 8 machine running as a HTPC and connected to a windows 2012 server domain.
I have windows 8.1 on a computer I am just trying to start using. However, when I transfer any of my personal files from the old computer they all end up as read-only. I try to change them, but they always revert back to read-only. The directories in the new computer are classified as read-only also, and cannot be changed. How can I solve this?

I have a laptop that i set up with an image that loads Win8X64 UEFI Secure. If this hard drive crashes at all, will i get a chance to hook it up to as an external hard drive to another computer to pull off user files as back up?
I tried to do this scenario before i start deploying uefi secure images for my company but it wouldn't show data. I can see the drive however in devices but it won't give it a drive letter and i can't access it.
Is there a resolution to this problem that i can troubleshoot just in case i run into it in the future.

I have save data on my old hard drive (disk) that I need to retrieve that is in the Windows7 "My documents recognized by Windows 8.1 (Windows 8.1 is on my new SSD).
I am concerned that my plan to retrieve my data might cause an error in the bootloader if I perform this method
Reboot in Windows 8.1
When the computer gets to the BIOS splash screen, press F11 (boot options)
Select old harddrive (disk drive with Windows 7) to boot into
This will boot in Windows 7 Home Premium which is located on the disk drive
Log in and go into file explorer
retrieve data from documents menu
copy/paste data from Disk Drive to new folder in SSD
Reboot in Windows 7
When the computer gets to the BIOS splash screen, press F11 (boot options)
Select SSD (with Windows 8.1)
Move data to documents folder
(If computer auto reboots from SSD then skip steps 9 and 10)
A couple of months ago I built a new system and made the jump to Windows 8.
Everything runs great apart from one thing - my secondary hard drive (which is the old one from my old rig) is having issues, which I am now only using for all my less-important programs, and movies, games and general files.
Whenever I open up the drive in Computer or Explorer, it will lock up the window/freeze for 10-20 seconds before returning to normal, in which I can then use it again. It will work for normally for around 5-10 minutes before the lockup returns.
I have the hard drive split into two partitions. Both do the same thing.
I have a 3-months old Dell laptop, which I need to do a factory reset for, using the recovery partition.
Since I don't have an external hdd available, in order to backup everything I needed (roughly 95 GB), I shrunk my C drive by 100 gig and created a secondary partition, and just moved my files there.
Now, if I remember correctly, unlike windows disc-installation, it will not let me choose which drive to format and install the new OS on, it'll just delete everything and restore it to the state it was in when I first got it.
Since both drives are on the same HDD, will it actually be deleted? (the secondary drive). If yes, what can I do to "tell it" not to touch that drive?

Basically at the moment i am using Windows 7 Home and will be upgrading to Windows 8.1 in about a weeks time. I currently have Windows 7 installed on a 60Gb SSD and i have a secondary 500Gb Seagate Barracuda for other files. What i am wondering is if i clean install Windows 8 onto the SSD only will i still be able to use the 2nd drive in Windows 8? Basically this drive has a fair amount of music / videos etc and i would like to make to make sure i can use these. I would like to do a clean install and not an upgrade btw.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAs I am nearing the limits of my C drive, I have been purging applications and moving them to a secondary D drive. One of the uninstalled apps, Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Pro, opened up space on my drive, but also left about 29 uninstalled programs (and I assume, many unnecessary folders). According to a couple of Google searches, uninstalling these programs, even if done in the correct order, could cause some problems down the line. However, I do want to install this program on my D drive. Would installing visual studio on my d drive cause any problems (as there are 29 programs related to visual studio on the C drive)? I am running windows 8.1 on a Gigabyte p34g.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 1.5 yr. old ASUS notebook which has been upgraded from the initial Windows 8.0 to 8.1 and then to PRO several months ago. The PRO was done in an attempt to install the encryption technology, Bitlocker. Shortly after the install of Bitlocker, I found it would not work and traced it back to a discussion with ASUS who said this particular notebook was not built with the ability to be encrypted. (This is the second notebook/laptop in several months that I ran across this!) In any case, Bitlocker is not turned on anywhere, and unfortunately, I can't find any tool to remove it from my harddrive as of yet. I only mention this as a possible bearing on the issue since apparently it embeds itself in the root directory, if I am correct. This problem recently started for some unknown reason I can't contribute anything to.
My drive D: is an extension on the physical drive. When I try to manipulate and files or folders, it comes up with "the media is read only" or "the disk is write protected" all dependent on what I am trying to do and what application is open. It will, of course, allow me to copy files to C:. I have tried the following:
-CHKDSK which found nothing
-FILE CHECKER which found nothing
-PERMISSIONS checked and everyone and everything has full permissions
-DISKPART/ATTRIBUTES ran to check everything and according to the attributes on this volume, there is NO READONLY! I ran the CLEAN command 2X anyway which came up "successful" each time.
-I also ran some quality DISK MANAGEMENT software which could not make any modifications since it views the drive as "Read Only".
installing a reputable software app failed and now my c drive is read only and although i can use most of my original programs, i cannot change anything, cannot choose a restore point as it say the administrator (me!) has stopped me doing this.
I cannot start my acronis to get my latest backup (on external drive), yet i can access my email and other programs.
The windows system is actually on a small ssd drive for speed although my C drive is on my normal harddisk.
i get the fault code 0x800704b3 when trying to access programs such as Wise 365.
My Hyper drive manager will not work either.
I can copy and paste and am copying all of the files in My Documents to an external hard drive (where all my Acronis backups are.
I have a sinking feeling that the only option left to me is a complete reinstall somehow as all the options seem to be blocked to me (Restore, Refresh etc)
Getting C unlocked would be a bonus.
Both optical drives are shown as working properly in Device Manager, but 70% of the time will not read data DVD disks. That includes data disks burnt using Nero and ISO Joliet format; and either mutli-session or finalized after burning. And disks formatted like a flash drive in UDF format using Windows 8 burning software. And is the same for R or RW +/- disks.
Rebooting sometimes fixes the program, other times not.
I have an Intel mob and CPU but Intel do not support drivers for Windows 8 so all drivers are generic Windows 8. Running driver update from device manager says all drivers are up to date.
I also intermittently, but regularly, get the printer and webcam USB2 drives not detecting these devices. And occasionally the USB3 external hard drives. USB drivers are also up to date.

I have a drive (say Z), to which I want to restrict access to the user XXX. The user should be able to read the documents and view the videos in the drive. However, he should not be able to delete/modify the files in the drive or write new files to the drive.
I have gone through: Permissions - Allow or Deny Access to Users and Groups in Windows 8. I'm not comfortable with command prompts or registry keys, so I tried option three (Change Access Permissions in Advanced Security Properties).
By default, the user had permission for "Read, Read & execute, List folder contents" only. However, even with these I found that the user could delete and modify the files/folders in drive Z. So, I denied the following: "Create file/folders, write attributes/extended attributes, delete subfolders/files". This seems to serve my purpose.
Now I wish to know two things:
1) Am I doing the right thing or messing up something?
2) There was a radio button "Only apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container". This I had left unchecked. Should I check this? The window (see attachment) clearly states that these permissions apply to "this folder, subfolder and files". Is this just a redundant option?
I just installed Win 8 last night and everything seemed fine before I turned off the computer. Now, I'm a student and I work a lot from my USB/HD. I have both my usb and HD connected to the computer but the computer doesn't read them now.

Just upgraded my laptop I have now noticed that whatever disc I put in the Dvd / Cd drive, it does not recognize it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI got an old computer, and my sister still is using it, it had XP but since support ended I decided to go for another system, unfortunetly there were no drivers for Vista and up, so I went for a USB boot - Linux Mint Maya 13 installation. The PC ended up being even slower and a friend just recently showed me how to install the drivers for Windows 8. I decided to go with a USB installation but when I restart and boot from the USB to install Windows 8 Pro, it says: Disk Read Error. I tested the USB on my new PC that I use and it did boot, but it won't boot from the old one.

When booting from his new SSD boot drive, Leo will end up with "errors" on the hard drives that need to be "fixed" IF he accesses any libraries that he set up on his old hard drive still is the computer.
My friend Leo, installed and boots from an SSD I gave him. He loves it. He also like that he can still boot from his old hard drive. If he accesses something via the library links that he had set up tho, it causes Windows 8 to report disk errors on boot that need to be fixed.
How would Leo go about disabling the libraries that he has set up? And is this the real issue for the errors? (Leo says that that he gets no errors unless he accesses something via the libraries).

I have a three monitor setup, and I prefer to have my start screen on the secondary monitor.
In Windows 8.0, win + page up or page down would move the start screen, but in 8.1, they have removed this keyboard shortcut.
How to move the start screen?
I have tried a few multiple monitor software packages (settled on UltraMon) and have done some Googling. I am trying to find a keyboard shortcut/hotkey that will move my browser's CURRENT TAB ONLY between monitors. I know I can drag it, but a shortcut key would be so much better.
View 1 Replies View RelatedLast night my laptop (running Windows 8 x64 with a secondary monitor) was working fine. I put it to sleep and when it woke up this morning the secondary monitor is flickering a lot like this:
I have tried uninstalling the AMD driver and restarting then installing the latest version but it still doesn't work. The screen even flickered when the AMD driver was not present. I connected the monitor to another laptop and it worked fine.I played about with the refresh rate in the catalyst control center and it ended up making the laptop screen flicker instead so I reverted the settings back.
I just had to reformat my hard drive and when I did I went ahead and updated to windows 8.1. I have everything set back up the way I like but I can't get the start menu to always open on my secondary monitor. I can set it to open on whatever monitor I'm currently using, but I only want it to open on the one specific monitor that ISN'T my main display.
I've tried using windows key + shift + arrows and that moves the start menu to the right monitor, but only that time. When I reopen it, it just pops up on my main display.
I've tried clicking on the bottom left of the second monitor and opening the start menu, but when I hit the windows key again it opens it on the main monitor.
I a bit stuck at the minute I have just put in a second ssd for just games and storage.in windows disk manager which type of partition do I set it to mbr or gpt this is not for my windows that's on another ssd ...

While I'm aware that Windows automatically creates its necessary extra small partitions for recovery, I just realized that my secondary HDD which I also formatted as GPT has these extra partitions. This secondary HDD was the one shipped on my laptop that used to have Win 8 preinstalled so maybe its remnants of that.
My question is (and I hope this is the right forum to ask): Are those partitions only necessary if the said hard drive contains the OS? In other words, can I delete them since this is a secondary drive?
Have a 32" HD TV which I use as my Primary Monitor(connected using HDMI) and a Lenova 17" as a Secondary (connected with vga cable). I shut the desktop down, unplugged the 17" to use on another pc. When I reconnect the 17" to my main desktop it now does not pick up
View 2 Replies View RelatedBoth primary and secondary displays are 1080p, native. Windows says both are running at 1920x1080, but I can visually see the secondary display is running a lower resolution. The GPU is GeForce GTX 560M, with the latest drivers. I didn't have this issue with Windows 7.

I purchased a DVI-D to VGA adapter (turns out it was a 5-pack) and it is not detecting it.
