Secondary Hard Drive Causing Freezing PC / Lockups
Sep 25, 2013
A couple of months ago I built a new system and made the jump to Windows 8.
Everything runs great apart from one thing - my secondary hard drive (which is the old one from my old rig) is having issues, which I am now only using for all my less-important programs, and movies, games and general files.
Whenever I open up the drive in Computer or Explorer, it will lock up the window/freeze for 10-20 seconds before returning to normal, in which I can then use it again. It will work for normally for around 5-10 minutes before the lockup returns.
I have the hard drive split into two partitions. Both do the same thing.

I have a laptop that i set up with an image that loads Win8X64 UEFI Secure. If this hard drive crashes at all, will i get a chance to hook it up to as an external hard drive to another computer to pull off user files as back up?
I tried to do this scenario before i start deploying uefi secure images for my company but it wouldn't show data. I can see the drive however in devices but it won't give it a drive letter and i can't access it.
Is there a resolution to this problem that i can troubleshoot just in case i run into it in the future.

Basically at the moment i am using Windows 7 Home and will be upgrading to Windows 8.1 in about a weeks time. I currently have Windows 7 installed on a 60Gb SSD and i have a secondary 500Gb Seagate Barracuda for other files. What i am wondering is if i clean install Windows 8 onto the SSD only will i still be able to use the 2nd drive in Windows 8? Basically this drive has a fair amount of music / videos etc and i would like to make to make sure i can use these. I would like to do a clean install and not an upgrade btw.

As I am nearing the limits of my C drive, I have been purging applications and moving them to a secondary D drive. One of the uninstalled apps, Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Pro, opened up space on my drive, but also left about 29 uninstalled programs (and I assume, many unnecessary folders). According to a couple of Google searches, uninstalling these programs, even if done in the correct order, could cause some problems down the line. However, I do want to install this program on my D drive. Would installing visual studio on my d drive cause any problems (as there are 29 programs related to visual studio on the C drive)? I am running windows 8.1 on a Gigabyte p34g.

When playing almost any game that has some kind of load on the GPU (from FPS games to Strategy), the game often freezes after around 10 - 60 minutes of playtime and the FPS drops to an unbearable amount and the only way to 'solve' the FPS issue is to restart the PC.
For some games, this FPS drop doesn't happen and it just freezes about 4 or 5 times before ultimately crashing because of some display driver issue about the AMD drivers not responding. This kind of issue usually happens with the older games rather than modern ones.
I am running an MSI Radeon 6850 with an AMD Phenom II X4 960T and a 600W power supply. I have tried all kinds of graphics drivers: the latest stable ones, the latest beta ones. I have tried uninstalling all graphics drivers and reinstalling them, with and without driver cleaning software but all to no avail.
I am now starting to think it may be a hardware issue but I do not have another graphics card to swap it out for so.

I have a question. One related to hard drives, multiple windows os', and BIOS.
I have save data on my old hard drive (disk) that I need to retrieve that is in the Windows7 "My documents recognized by Windows 8.1 (Windows 8.1 is on my new SSD).
I am concerned that my plan to retrieve my data might cause an error in the bootloader if I perform this method
Reboot in Windows 8.1
When the computer gets to the BIOS splash screen, press F11 (boot options)
Select old harddrive (disk drive with Windows 7) to boot into
This will boot in Windows 7 Home Premium which is located on the disk drive
Log in and go into file explorer
retrieve data from documents menu
copy/paste data from Disk Drive to new folder in SSD
Reboot in Windows 7
When the computer gets to the BIOS splash screen, press F11 (boot options)
Select SSD (with Windows 8.1)
Move data to documents folder
(If computer auto reboots from SSD then skip steps 9 and 10)

I have a 3-months old Dell laptop, which I need to do a factory reset for, using the recovery partition.
Since I don't have an external hdd available, in order to backup everything I needed (roughly 95 GB), I shrunk my C drive by 100 gig and created a secondary partition, and just moved my files there.
Now, if I remember correctly, unlike windows disc-installation, it will not let me choose which drive to format and install the new OS on, it'll just delete everything and restore it to the state it was in when I first got it.
Since both drives are on the same HDD, will it actually be deleted? (the secondary drive). If yes, what can I do to "tell it" not to touch that drive?

I've recently bought a computer which has has Windows 8.1 installed on it from the very beginning--had it for about 3-4 weeks by now. Everything off-games works great. 'Net runs smooth, boots up very well, etc. This is also a computer meant to play/run all sorts of games--it was benchmarked a bit higher than the average gaming computer.
This is the exact PC that I have, without any custom changes. And it is also the place I got it from with a warranty--you can also find the computer's more detailed specs in the link: CybertronPC Beast II TGM1214A Gaming PC - AMD FX-9590 4.70GHz, 32GB DDR3, 2TB HDD, DVDRW, 3GB GeForce GTX780, Liquid Cooled, Front Fan Control Panel, WiFi, Windows 8.1 at TigerDirect.com
My Problem: I noticed my problem happening when I have tried to play various games--Neverwinter Nights 2 (even though it is old, I think it still applies), Elderscrolls Online, The Secret World, WoW, Saints Row 4 (their newest one), The Forest (an alpha game on Steam) and some various others in between--some have less problems than others, however for the most recent one, I was playing Saints Row 4, and it completely froze the computer; I could not even use CTRL + ALT + Delete to get out of the game, so I was forced to press the Restart Button to restart the system.
*It is also worthy of note, that some games have less crashes than others. For example, NWN2 does not crash as often since I optimized it's settings and put it in compatibility mode. But sometimes it will flash black, then go back to the game screen, black again, etc.--it does this about 3-4 times before erroring and saying it needs to close, but that I can live with. I just wish to fix the complete lock-up freezes that make me restart my computer.
Most times I get these freezes, on the various ones I play, I get this warning in the Event Viewer, timed JUST before the freeze:
"A pointer device did not report a required angular physical range." - Event 259, Win32k (Win32k) (Warning)

I was thinking that the recent graphics card drivers may have something to do with something, however I'm uncertain. My mouse or keyboard could be the problem, however I have used the keyboard and mouse that the computer had originally came with, so I am unsure why that would be an issue--however I did try switching out the plugs into other USBs, switching keyboards, switching mice, etc. I also have a flatscreen TV-monitor which is a Samsung, however I switched out an old monitor that died on me, but it had been doing the same thing before the switch as well.
I'm very unsure what to do at this point--I can play my games, but there are various interruptions (randomly) throughout play that make me regret getting this computer (I had a Windows 7 that ran 99% of my games, without any sort of problems; and the Windows 7 wasn't even geared to the teeth like this one is.) I have also attempted to run these games in Windows XP/etc compatability modes, to no avail.

My hardware specs are available here:
Blue Phantom | MegaGames
By default Windows has Faster starting on
My UEFI also has a rapid boot function which I set to on (But not ultra rapid which requires a GPT formatted HDD/SSD)
However on two occassions this has caused the system to lock when attempting to start Windows. Both times it won't make it past the turning circles.
Restarting, entering UEFI and disabling rapid boot allows Windows to get to the loading screen and then automatically system restore to an earlier time.
Two sets of circumstances have set this chain of events off:
1) Enabling hibernate - apparently my motherboard doesn't like it
2) Using Memtest 3.50 (an older version no longer available) - This happened yesterday.
I would suggest the memtest error is because:
Windows stores bootfiles on the ram for fast startup 3 Year old version of mem test starts up and tests ram, upsetting the boot files
Windows fails to boot.
that's just a hunch as to why it didn't work.
Anyway, long story short I'm occasionally getting lockups and forced system restores to keep windows running whenever I have enabled rapid boot and circumstances are unusual.
I can and have disabled rapid boot but I'd be interested to know what exactly might be causing the problem. Is it just an older incompatible version of memtest and a motherboard which doesn't like to hibernate or a bigger problem?

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Essentials, it's filled with tons of old photos, movies, docs, games, and I'm scared to think of what else. The SATA to USB connector broke on it, so I took the drive apart and put it inside my computer. I opened up device manager because it wasn't showing up automatically and the 2TB is showing up as unallocated, I'm freaking out now because I'm scared the data was somehow deleted. What do I do?
edit: I realize also this isn't directly related to Windows 8 (besides the fact it's the OS I'm on), but I don't know where else to post it. I'd also like to say that I had a really deep feeling the drive was going to break continually for about two weeks before it happened, so if you have a similar feeling about something, don't ignore it!

I know there is good software out there to clone/image my hard drive and restore it to a new SSD drive. I'm just wondering though, since my laptop is brand new, I made a full recovery to a USB drive and included the OEM recovery partition.
Couldn't I just swap out the old HDD with the new SSD and boot with the recovery stick and do a full recovery back to the new SSD?
Also, however I do this, recover or image backup/restore, do I need to do some type of SSD alignment? I can't find a clear answer on that.

I am new to Windows 8, and first time with a laptop. I have 1tb hard drive (minus a few gb) in c drive. d drive is being used as recovery
This is how it was setup. What I would like to do is to partition the amount of space i have from c drive into another drive.
Can manage to partition some hard drive space over to another driver letter, if i do a fresh install of windows, will this new drive be formatted too?
(Just asking this because when I owned a desktop computer, I had two drives. A c-drive and a d-drive. When I re-installed windows 7 on the desktop, all my files were still available on the d-drive, hence asking the above last question).

A few months ago my laptop broke and it needed repairs. The HDD was replaced and i got my laptop back with one new HDD inside and one "broke" HDD in a bag. Later the "Repaired" Laptop crashed again so i bought a new one and took the HDD out of the old laptop. I bought a HDD case with USB connection and both of the HDD's where intact. The oldest HDD contained windows 7 and the replaced contained windows 8. Now i want to sell the Windows 8 HDD so i want it to be clean of personal files but i want it to keep windows 8. I thought the solution was to run the windows 8 on the HDD so i can use the program deletation program of that windows 8. The problem is i dont know how to run windows 8 of a hard drive. I have searched the internet but with no success.

I have two USB 3.0 ports on the front of my Dell XPS 8500 Dell desktop. Once again I have caused the USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller to stop working because I did not disconnect the external hard drive before shutting down, it seems. It reminds me of leaving in a floppy drive but at least the computer would not boot in that circumstance. Now, there is no warning whatsoever. Dell technical support's answer is to refresh or reset the machine.
Any way that would be less time-consuming than having to reinstall all of my applications.

My HP laptop computer glitched up yesterday so I factory resetted it.
Just today, it finished, and I went to install some games on it.
While I was about to install BF4, it said that there was not enough disk space, so I went to my "THIS PC".
It said that I only had 4.18GB available out of 99.6GB.
When I purchased my laptop, it came with 1TB. And I have been using 1TB up until now. But it randomly shrunk by 900GB. WTF!?
Link to image: [URL] .....
I have:
HP ENVY DV7 NOTEBOOK PC
WINDOWS 8.1
INTEL CORE i7 2.40 GHZ
NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 630M 2GB DEDICATED VIDEO MEMORY
AND I WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE 1TB OF HARD DISK SPACE!!!
Short form: Why did my hard drive literally SHRINK 900GB!?

I have two Internal Hard disks in my system. First one is partitioned and used for system. i don't have problem on this hard disk. My second hard disk is 500 GB, and is not partitioned. I m using this drive for storing movies and music. The problem I faced is two of the folders are missing from this drive. THese two folders have several files. All other folders and files are intact. I just checked hard disk's used space and found to be 463 GB. I then selected all folders and viewed the combined spaces(including hidden and system folders) and I found it to be 389 GB only. Where are my these two folders? How can I retrieve it? Where is (463-389=74 GB) of space which is included in drive's "Used Space" metrics.

My computer is setup with two hard drives. My primary is a 120gb SSD and my secondary is a 1tb SATA. I use my secondary for all my data. Many times when I try to set a program to use that hard drive for storage, for example my camera software, it tells me I cant because I need administrative privileges. The same thing happened why I try to set my wifes iTunes account to store data on the secondary hard drive. We both have administrative rights so I don't understand whats going on. I don't want to go back to Windows 7 because I actually like Windows 8, but if this type of problem continues I just might.
