Apr 29, 2014I have a Dell XPS-12 laptop. It's pretty standard, and I only use it for school. I'm a Computer Science major (which is incredibly ironic in this situation... wow), and I partitioned part of my harddrive off, about 32 GB, for a CentOS and then Kali Linux install, first to run a configuration and write some custom code for an open source captive portal my work has deployed and second for testing my place of employments security implementation (boy was it easy to gather some scary data with a simple wireshark capture..). I am extremely busy with being a fulltime student and also working 2 jobs and freelancing web development, and I haven't been able to figure out why after reformatting the partition I was using for the Linux installs, I could never reintegrate that partition into my own Windows partition. It's incredibly annoying as I only have a 128 GB SSD and after screwing with it for ten minutes, said screw it and just made it into a backup drive where I keep all my code and larger ISO images for different OS' I have (after just a year of studying CS, I've had to use a total of 6 different Linux OS', as well as messing with trying to get an ArchLinux install up and running correctly... I'm starting to feel like a collector)
why my harddrive is being super lame and finish that matrix for the Software Packaging class' final it's pretty obvious which I'm going to go with. Problem is, now, I'm starting to do a bit of freelance security consulting here and there, and I need to have a portable Kali partition with me. I also need to shrink the partition, but when I do I can never put it back into my main Windows partition so there really is no point.
Also, I'm running windows 8.0 right now, but I've had 8.1 before and the fixes still didn't work.

First Of all You Need To Open Control Panel Then Go to System Security-Administrative Tools Then Computer Management
In Second Step You need To Open Storage And Then Disk Management
In Third Step . Now you need a partition which will be added to the targeted one (E: drive will be added to D:). The drive which will be added to another, should be back-up before this major change on disk partitions.
So be Sure that You Done Backup Files Then Delete the Partition Then After Getting a Free Space Partition,Move To partition (D Drive) Which Will Be Extended and right-click on it. Select the Extend Volume and go Next.
Select Next From the Bottom Side And Then It will take a Few Minutes To Merge Two partition Into Single Drive.

Jul 31, 2014I am having a little trouble with windows disk management. I'm running a custom built rig with a 250GB SSD for OS & Programs, and a 2TB HDD for everything else. The hard drive was previously partitioned however I recently removed these partitions and Extended the main volume to fill the drive, however it is showing up as 3 distinct volumes in disk management (See attached screenshot). They're also Green from some reason and the disk is showing as a 'Dynamic' disk, which I don't remember changing.

Can't Edit Or Delete Any Of Drive Partitions - Options Disabled
Mar 27, 2014This is when I tried to install a fresh OS (Windows 8 Enterprise N) into an acer laptop with a config, i3, 4gb, 500gb, win7 ult. I can't delete or re-create any of the drive partitions. The options are disabled there.I first thought it might be a problem with the compatibility of the hardware with the Win8 operating system. So I tried to boot with win7 OS installation to delete all the partitions, but no use, got same problem with win7 too.
No partitions are being deleted. So I started the system with the old win7 OS (installed in the system), from the disc management option deleted all the drives except drive C (of course the OS will not let me format or delete drive C ). and then reboot with the Win8 installation, created 2 new partitions, formatted C drive and then installed the OS. I needed to change the C drive partition size but I couldn't.

Jul 10, 2013I know there is good software out there to clone/image my hard drive and restore it to a new SSD drive. I'm just wondering though, since my laptop is brand new, I made a full recovery to a USB drive and included the OEM recovery partition.
Couldn't I just swap out the old HDD with the new SSD and boot with the recovery stick and do a full recovery back to the new SSD?
Also, however I do this, recover or image backup/restore, do I need to do some type of SSD alignment? I can't find a clear answer on that.

A little investigating using the command prompt from that disk revealed my system and data partitions had no drive letter assigned to them. A little work with Diskpart fixed that but left me wondering what would have caused them to disappear.

Jul 7, 2014I used to have Vista, when I had multiple windows open in an application (and they were combined in the taskbar) the number of windows used to be displayed next to the icon. Now I have Windows 8.1, this feature seems to have disappeared and the only way I can see how many windows are open is to manually count them one-by-one. The only difference when the application combines the windows is that is looks to have 3 windows combined on the right hand side of the application in the taskbar.
Is there any way to get this number back? I think this feature may have been removed from 8.1, but if it has is there a workaround?

Hard Drive Not Recognized?
Jun 27, 2014when plugging in my seagate freeagent hard drive i get the message "USB device not recognized. I have been to device manager and it appears as "unknown USB device (device descriptor request failed)". I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling, checked for new drivers/updates.

Nov 4, 2013I have two USB 3.0 ports on the front of my Dell XPS 8500 Dell desktop. Once again I have caused the USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller to stop working because I did not disconnect the external hard drive before shutting down, it seems. It reminds me of leaving in a floppy drive but at least the computer would not boot in that circumstance. Now, there is no warning whatsoever. Dell technical support's answer is to refresh or reset the machine.
Any way that would be less time-consuming than having to reinstall all of my applications.
Hard Drive Seemed To Shrink From 1TB To 99GB?
Jan 1, 2014My HP laptop computer glitched up yesterday so I factory resetted it.
Just today, it finished, and I went to install some games on it.
While I was about to install BF4, it said that there was not enough disk space, so I went to my "THIS PC".
It said that I only had 4.18GB available out of 99.6GB.
When I purchased my laptop, it came with 1TB. And I have been using 1TB up until now. But it randomly shrunk by 900GB. WTF!?

Jan 18, 2014Recently lost my mobo due to a power surge no drives detected dead screen. i have a SATA to usb and can see my drive, and data is in tact but when i try to boot in the new computer (system recognizes drive) i get a( to quick to read message) something about the pc i think the issue is the computer im trying to put this drive in is about 3 years younger than the computer the drive was running in. when i use the win 8 recovery on a flash it loops. while running the flash quick message about pc(it does read from the flash but then fails) i was able to use the flash to load 8 on a formatted drive(in this computer) worked fine. and will use as a last resort but would really like to, of course keep all my drivers and settings and software settings etc

I m using this drive for storing movies and music. The problem I faced is two of the folders are missing from this drive. THese two folders have several files. All other folders and files are intact. I just checked hard disk's used space and found to be 463 GB. I then selected all folders and viewed the combined spaces(including hidden and system folders) and I found it to be 389 GB only. Where are my these two folders? How can I retrieve it? Where is (463-389=74 GB) of space which is included in drive's "Used Space" metrics.

Administrative Rights On Second Hard Drive
Nov 20, 2012My computer is setup with two hard drives. My primary is a 120gb SSD and my secondary is a 1tb SATA. I use my secondary for all my data. Many times when I try to set a program to use that hard drive for storage, for example my camera software, it tells me I cant because I need administrative privileges. The same thing happened why I try to set my wifes iTunes account to store data on the secondary hard drive. We both have administrative rights so I don't understand whats going on. I don't want to go back to Windows 7 because I actually like Windows 8, but if this type of problem continues I just might.
