View 3 RepliesI have a Dell XPS-12 laptop. It's pretty standard, and I only use it for school. I'm a Computer Science major (which is incredibly ironic in this situation... wow), and I partitioned part of my harddrive off, about 32 GB, for a CentOS and then Kali Linux install, first to run a configuration and write some custom code for an open source captive portal my work has deployed and second for testing my place of employments security implementation (boy was it easy to gather some scary data with a simple wireshark capture..). I am extremely busy with being a fulltime student and also working 2 jobs and freelancing web development, and I haven't been able to figure out why after reformatting the partition I was using for the Linux installs, I could never reintegrate that partition into my own Windows partition. It's incredibly annoying as I only have a 128 GB SSD and after screwing with it for ten minutes, said screw it and just made it into a backup drive where I keep all my code and larger ISO images for different OS' I have (after just a year of studying CS, I've had to use a total of 6 different Linux OS', as well as messing with trying to get an ArchLinux install up and running correctly... I'm starting to feel like a collector)
why my harddrive is being super lame and finish that matrix for the Software Packaging class' final it's pretty obvious which I'm going to go with. Problem is, now, I'm starting to do a bit of freelance security consulting here and there, and I need to have a portable Kali partition with me. I also need to shrink the partition, but when I do I can never put it back into my main Windows partition so there really is no point.
Also, I'm running windows 8.0 right now, but I've had 8.1 before and the fixes still didn't work.
Combine Two Partitions In Windows 8
if you look at the second post it states
"3) You actually *CAN* combine partitions, and that is *NOT* the way to do it."
I am having a little trouble with windows disk management. I'm running a custom built rig with a 250GB SSD for OS & Programs, and a 2TB HDD for everything else. The hard drive was previously partitioned however I recently removed these partitions and Extended the main volume to fill the drive, however it is showing up as 3 distinct volumes in disk management (See attached screenshot). They're also Green from some reason and the disk is showing as a 'Dynamic' disk, which I don't remember changing.

I was wondering what you'd recommend for the following:
I want a program that synchronizes my files with my external hard drive.
The client I use right now, Memeo Instant Backup, is decent, but has the following issues:
1. Takes a lot of resources to run
2. Is extremely slow
3. Doesn't mirror deleting files on my hard drive, keeps them on my external and causes it to get full
Is there a program I can use that just literally copies my user folder onto an external drive, and as I delete/move files on my hard drive, its mirrored on the external hard drive?
I have a Western Digital external hard drive. Model WD5000C032 500GB. It's an older device that was working just fine on my Mac (I don't know what OS it was running and do not have access to it any longer). I have brought this HD with me and am now trying to use it on my Windows 8.1 lap top. When I plug it in, the device is not assigned a letter. I can search for it in disk management, but it is uninitialized. I have right clicked on the drive to initialize, and receive an error message "the specific disk is not convertible because the size is less than the minimum size required for GPT disks." I searched and suggestion is downloading and using Partition Wizard. I downloaded the program and opened the wizard, but it does not see my hard drive. The screen shot will display as far as I've gotten.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was going to reinstalling windows on my computer and i thought put 200gb for windows 8 and and 1300gb can be for windows 7(for gaming), So i install windows 8 and shrink the hard drive size so windows 8 has 200gb. And use windows 7 for gaming but my pc is a bit s#*t and a dont do gaming any more. (only on the ps3).
So can i unshrink or something so i have 1.5tb together for windows 8?

Over the last couple days, I built a new PC and installed windows 8.1. Initially I had some issues installing windows, so I unplugged all my drives except the SSD and DVD. I installed windows to my SSD.
Everything works great!
Now I started adding my drives back in 1 at a time. When I plugged my 2nd SSD in, it showed up in BIOS, but not in Disk Management or Device Manager. So I booted back into the install CD, it showed up in the disk manager there. Since this was also a blank SSD, I partitioned and formated the drive from the install CD, then exited the installer and booted back to my windows drive.
I have 2 SSD drives working great!
Now to add my 2TB HDD... Same issue, it shows up in BIOS and the install disc, but not in Disk Management or Device Manager. This drive does not have a boot partition on it, however, it does have two existing data partitions. They were made from my previous windows 7 system and the option to delete these partitions is grayed out in the install disc menu. I also have some data that I would like to keep on it. I have a USB dock that I can use to read the contents of the disk just fine. Everything is there and in working order.
What is different about Windows 8.1 that is preventing my hard drives from showing up in windows proper? I am reading things about UEFI online, but nothing seems to fit my exact scenario. I will try and post some screen shots when I get back at it.
System:
Mobo- Asrock Fatal1ty Killer z87
CPU- i3 4330
GPU- Gigabyte 660 OC
SSDs - Kingston V300 120GB
Windows 8.1 64bit
IE won't work, Windows Store won't access, Can't "Refresh" without OS Disk, Won't access extra hard drive or format. Using Windows 8 Pro, don't have original disk. Can I purchase another Windows 8 Upgrade disk and install it to resolve this problem?

View 6 Replies View Relatedso a few years ago i bought this pc and as Always i make 2 partitions one for backup and the other for windows and all the other stuff.
So today i wanted to reinstall windows because the Disk 0 partition fitness was 0% and randomly freezing. as my other half was like 70-80% fitness (rated by Speedfan). But this never happened to me, usually Partition C and D Always were on the same "disk #" and now they are separated and i just cant get them back.
now i want to put them back together and make one whole HDD, any way to get them back to eachother?

My hard disk crashed. I have a recovery cd created on the time of purchase. I bought a new hard disk for this purpose. Now when I am trying to recover from the same cd it is getting stuck at 40 % showing error. I searched for this error and got something as such recovery disk can work on OEM hd. As my old hd has crashed how can I recover over there. Is there any system that dell provide me with necessary operating system so that atleast I can use my system.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have put a 120Gb Intel SSD in my laptop, done a fresh install of Windows 8 from the supplied recovery DVD's. Then upgraded to Windows 8.1 through the Windows store, installed Photoshop 7 and Kingsoft Office and a couple of very small other programs. Everything is working fine. Great. I have hardly any docs music etc on this machine (they are all on my server).
I checked my hard drive usage and discover that I have used 75.3Gb and only have 31.2Gb left. C: partition is 106Gb. I know that the recovery DVD's created restore partitions and they can be seen in disk management. No worries there, they are only a few Gb and make up the total usable disk space (120Gb or so)
So I have been looking for where the bloat is. I have enabled viewing hidden files, and added up all the folders sizes on the root of C: It comes to 44Gb. It doesn't add up to anywhere near the total that I am being told is used 75Gb. So what is using the additional 31Gb or so? and how do I find it?

As you can see, they are very different.
My hard disk was always full (itunes/picasa filling it with multiple backups etc); so decided to upgrade to a whopping 1tb. I bought the HDD and a cradle; and have created a clone of all my files and settings onto the new monster using an application. I want to copy all my settings across - Virtual DJ takes best part of a day to configure for example.
Downside is, the new disk is not bootable; and I cannot make it bootable however I try.
I have made the partition active using "diskmanger"
I have gone to the drive and typed in admin mode in command prompt:
g:
cd/boot
bootsect g:
I have also tried:
Bcdedit /import C:BootBCD.
This hasn't worked, so tried this:
Bcdedit /set {bootmgr} device partition=G:
TBH - don't really understand the commends, just trying everything I can!
i have the same problem, it gives me the same error, "Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. The partition contains one or more dynamic volumes that are not supported for installation."
View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried to make partitions on my hard disk and then tried to reboot the system, but it fails to reboot, error 0xc0000225 (winloader) on blue screen. BIOS sees the harddisk. I can also load the recovery program (hp), but it provides me only 1 option - to make system recovery to factory settings and losing all I have on my hard disk. Can it be somehow possible to recover win 8 and start it without factory settings recovery and losing files?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 Professional recently (about a month ago). It's running fine mostly but there is one thing that keeps irritating me, whenever I leave my PC idle for long (like half hour or so), the system start to do something in background with hard drive light constantly lit.
This keeps going on until I come back and start doing something or it randomly stops doing it. This also happens during work too but rarely. I have heard that file indexing and windows update are possible culprits behind this issue and turned them off but it is still happening. I don't know what's wrong with this OS, it never happened with Windows 7 before.
I mostly use my system for gaming (Steam) and have no antivirus installed beside Windows Defender, in addition to that there is no 3rd party de-fragment program installed. When this happens during games it makes game performance sluggish which is the major cause of annoyance for me.

But when I select the partition drive it said that windows cannot be install in that drive because the selected drive is GPT partition style. I'm booting off my SSD which is drive C: and I have games and programs on an extra hard drive which was origanally drive H: but after a restart it switched to I: and when I go into Disk Management to change it Drive H: isn't there.

The SATA to USB connector broke on it, so I took the drive apart and put it inside my computer. I opened up device manager because it wasn't showing up automatically and the 2TB is showing up as unallocated, I'm freaking out now because I'm scared the data was somehow deleted.What do I do?
edit: I realize also this isn't directly related to Windows 8 (besides the fact it's the OS I'm on), but I don't know where else to post it. I'd also like to say that I had a really deep feeling the drive was going to break continually for about two weeks before it happened, so if you have a similar feeling about something, don't ignore it!
This is when I tried to install a fresh OS (Windows 8 Enterprise N) into an acer laptop with a config, i3, 4gb, 500gb, win7 ult. I can't delete or re-create any of the drive partitions. The options are disabled there.I first thought it might be a problem with the compatibility of the hardware with the Win8 operating system. So I tried to boot with win7 OS installation to delete all the partitions, but no use, got same problem with win7 too.
No partitions are being deleted. So I started the system with the old win7 OS (installed in the system), from the disc management option deleted all the drives except drive C (of course the OS will not let me format or delete drive C ). and then reboot with the Win8 installation, created 2 new partitions, formatted C drive and then installed the OS. I needed to change the C drive partition size but I couldn't.

This is how it was setup. What I would like to do is to partition the amount of space i have from c drive into another drive.
Can manage to partition some hard drive space over to another driver letter, if i do a fresh install of windows, will this new drive be formatted too?
(Just asking this because when I owned a desktop computer, I had two drives. A c-drive and a d-drive. When I re-installed windows 7 on the desktop, all my files were still available on the d-drive, hence asking the above last question).
