Mar 13, 2013My PC with Windows 8 Pro doesn't read any kind of discs. I first tried a movie then it reads, a little disc appears on the cursor which means that the disc is being read. But all of a sudden, it fails at the end and doesn't read the disc. Even a bootable disc, it just stays black with a blinking line then it fails to read it as well. No errors or messages, it just proceeds to the Windows 8 loading screen.

Jul 30, 2014I have a new Asus Laptop running 64 bit 8.1 Windows Operating System. It has a celeron processor @ 1.86 Ghz with 4GB of Ram.
The DVD/CD Drive will not auto start any discs, DVD or CD. I have set the auto start at "on" and in the control panel I have it checked to auto play all media. It still does not auto start when I insert a cd or dvd. I can however, manually see the files and play a music CD.

Aug 25, 2014I want to partition my C Drive to install Ubuntu 14.04 so I can dual-boot with Windows 8.1. When I tried to shrink the volume it wouldn't let me got higher than 4GB even though its a 500GB drive and I have over 259GB free. From looking at it the drive seems to have a few recovery partitions one being just under 24GB. Does the number of drive partitions factor into the amount of space I can give to a partition. Also if the recovery partitions are factoring into this can I move them to another drive or just outright delete them.

I had windows 7 Installed in it, and later I installed windows 8.1 in drive C. right now I am using windows 8.1 and I have also deleted some important system files that were in drive D, so windows 7 is not usable, and I don't want to use it.

When I plug in my drive, it shows up in with all of my other drives, and when I double click it to open it, the explorer window freezes, and doesn't unfreeze until I unplug the flash drive. I don't know what went wrong. Maybe it is a driver issue? I am positive that the drive is fine, because it works on my laptop, and even works on this computer in a linux virtual machine.

Can't Turn Off Read Only On Secondary Drive
Feb 13, 2013XBMC (my htpc software) can not write changes to secondary drive as when I turn off Read-Only it automatically turns back on again.
I can give further information but i didn't want to swap you guys with details unless they are needed, but just in case it is a windows 8 machine running as a HTPC and connected to a windows 2012 server domain.
Drive D Is Locked Into Attribute Of Read Only
Jul 13, 2014I have a 1.5 yr. old ASUS notebook which has been upgraded from the initial Windows 8.0 to 8.1 and then to PRO several months ago. The PRO was done in an attempt to install the encryption technology, Bitlocker. Shortly after the install of Bitlocker, I found it would not work and traced it back to a discussion with ASUS who said this particular notebook was not built with the ability to be encrypted. (This is the second notebook/laptop in several months that I ran across this!) In any case, Bitlocker is not turned on anywhere, and unfortunately, I can't find any tool to remove it from my harddrive as of yet. I only mention this as a possible bearing on the issue since apparently it embeds itself in the root directory, if I am correct. This problem recently started for some unknown reason I can't contribute anything to.
My drive D: is an extension on the physical drive. When I try to manipulate and files or folders, it comes up with "the media is read only" or "the disk is write protected" all dependent on what I am trying to do and what application is open. It will, of course, allow me to copy files to C:. I have tried the following:
-CHKDSK which found nothing
-FILE CHECKER which found nothing
-PERMISSIONS checked and everyone and everything has full permissions
-DISKPART/ATTRIBUTES ran to check everything and according to the attributes on this volume, there is NO READONLY! I ran the CLEAN command 2X anyway which came up "successful" each time.
-I also ran some quality DISK MANAGEMENT software which could not make any modifications since it views the drive as "Read Only".
C Drive Read Only After Software Install Fails
Jun 2, 2013installing a reputable software app failed and now my c drive is read only and although i can use most of my original programs, i cannot change anything, cannot choose a restore point as it say the administrator (me!) has stopped me doing this.
I cannot start my acronis to get my latest backup (on external drive), yet i can access my email and other programs.
The windows system is actually on a small ssd drive for speed although my C drive is on my normal harddisk.
i get the fault code 0x800704b3 when trying to access programs such as Wise 365.
My Hyper drive manager will not work either.
I can copy and paste and am copying all of the files in My Documents to an external hard drive (where all my Acronis backups are.
I have a sinking feeling that the only option left to me is a complete reinstall somehow as all the options seem to be blocked to me (Restore, Refresh etc)
Getting C unlocked would be a bonus.
Optical Drive Often Won't Read DVD Data Disks
Sep 17, 2013Both optical drives are shown as working properly in Device Manager, but 70% of the time will not read data DVD disks. That includes data disks burnt using Nero and ISO Joliet format; and either mutli-session or finalized after burning. And disks formatted like a flash drive in UDF format using Windows 8 burning software. And is the same for R or RW +/- disks.
Rebooting sometimes fixes the program, other times not.
I have an Intel mob and CPU but Intel do not support drivers for Windows 8 so all drivers are generic Windows 8. Running driver update from device manager says all drivers are up to date.
I also intermittently, but regularly, get the printer and webcam USB2 drives not detecting these devices. And occasionally the USB3 external hard drives. USB drivers are also up to date.
Accounts :: How To Grant Read Only Access Of Drive To User
Aug 18, 2014I have a admin account and a normal user account say XXX.
I have a drive (say Z), to which I want to restrict access to the user XXX. The user should be able to read the documents and view the videos in the drive. However, he should not be able to delete/modify the files in the drive or write new files to the drive.
I have gone through: Permissions - Allow or Deny Access to Users and Groups in Windows 8. I'm not comfortable with command prompts or registry keys, so I tried option three (Change Access Permissions in Advanced Security Properties).
By default, the user had permission for "Read, Read & execute, List folder contents" only. However, even with these I found that the user could delete and modify the files/folders in drive Z. So, I denied the following: "Create file/folders, write attributes/extended attributes, delete subfolders/files". This seems to serve my purpose.
Now I wish to know two things:
1) Am I doing the right thing or messing up something?
2) There was a radio button "Only apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container". This I had left unchecked. Should I check this? The window (see attachment) clearly states that these permissions apply to "this folder, subfolder and files". Is this just a redundant option?
Hard Drive - Read / Write Speed Crap?
Oct 4, 2013Whenever I open new programs, my hard drive jumps up to 100% usage. The problem is my read/write speed looks like it's capped around 10 MB/s. The manufacture says I should get an average of 156 MB/s.
I have a 6 month old Dell XPS 8500 (i7, 8GB RAM, 1TB-7200 rpm hard drive). I consistently take care of it (defrag, clean sweep, virus/malware protection). See the dropbox link or PDF attached for examples of my issue.

May 23, 2014I got an old computer, and my sister still is using it, it had XP but since support ended I decided to go for another system, unfortunetly there were no drivers for Vista and up, so I went for a USB boot - Linux Mint Maya 13 installation. The PC ended up being even slower and a friend just recently showed me how to install the drivers for Windows 8. I decided to go with a USB installation but when I restart and boot from the USB to install Windows 8 Pro, it says: Disk Read Error. I tested the USB on my new PC that I use and it did boot, but it won't boot from the old one.

Like you can with a HDD.
I am using a program called AIDA64 notice at times my two internal SSD's read 44c.
Two i have are:
Crucial MX100 CT512MX100SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive
Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive
Most say they do not get too hot or not really hot at all, due to no moving parts and less power consumed.
Never remember my HDD reaching past 37-38c
2.5" to 3.5" bracket i have fits 2 SSD's and makes them sit close to each other, one above the other in a 3.5" bay.Pretty open around it, i have two case fans, nothing else it getting too hot, but it is summer time here and i do notice a difference compared to winter with rest of the components.

May 26, 2014I had to reinstall windows. I had a raid 0 with 2 drives, when I started widows the drive couldn't be accessed. so the only option was to convert to dynamic disk. I did that but still cant read or change drive letters. I am pretty sure my data is still on it. but how can I read this disk?
right now I am scanning it with easeUS data recovery and it looks like its finding files. any other way to read the drive?

Sep 15, 2014I have this external hard disk of 500Gb of Verbatim. Previously it was of NTFS format. Then I had converted it into Fat32 because I wanted to write stuff on it from MAC. I transferred movies, pictures, videos, songs, etc in it.
Now, I use Windows 8.1. I connect this hard disk. I hear the sound of it getting connected. But then I can't access the hard disk. As in my laptop doesn't read the hard disk. I read a few posts regarding converting a hard disk from FAT32 to NTFS wiithout losing the files. But I was not sure whether I have the same problem.
I want to transfer all the files in my hard disk to my laptop.

Jun 3, 2014Had drive problems with PC so got new SSD drives and a Hybrid drive.All new drives so did tortuous route install win7 - upgrade to win 8.0 all worked then started acting up. My tech support worked on it for 2 days and gave up said I should backup and do a clean install from start. So I did.
Not yet put any backup files on so only operating system and devices (printer, wireless keyboard/mouse, wireless headset and 3webcams ( One Pluscom and two PCline ) checked device manager and found cameras with yellow exclamation mark and checked properties and saw this webcam.JPG . Download, install and do a reboot and see what happens.

So my queries is that i have recently installed windows 8.1 and i wanted these original files to be installed but dont know which one to pick from vista drivers or windows 7 drivers? but windows 7 drivers are latest when compare with vista. Or should I download nvidia drivers from nvidia website? and also same goes with realtek audio driver from realtek website?
Make Recovery Discs But Win 8.1 Won't Allow Anymore?
Aug 7, 2014I tried to make recovery discs but Win 8.1 won't allow that anymore. This is from a MS full install disk, not OEM partition or similar. I tried the flash drive method and it did do that. However, the customer had only a USB flash drive adapter that allows MSD to fit. It accepted that and created the recovery flash drive using that setup. However, upon rebooting it just doesn't go into recovery mode. It just sits there prior to boot menu setup after pressing [ESC] for the laptop. What is going on? I know the flash drive is holding the boot process after I press [ESC] to enter boot menu for the laptop, what gives. I really don't think a true flash drive will work as well, though i couldn't test that at the time.

Nov 14, 2013So figured out my Windows 8 install was corrupt so I decided to do a fresh install of Windows 8 Pro 64-bit.
Formatted my drives and proceeded to install Windows 8 successfully. While installing all of my drivers every single one of them installed perfectly fine besides IntelRST.
It seems to time out every damn time. I tried to manually install it via device manager and it times out as well. I even reformatted and re installed Windows 8 still no go.
The crazy thing is when I try to manually install it via device manager it times out but the driver shows the correct date so I'm sort of at a loss right now.
