Windows 8 Not Recognizing Any Discs
Mar 13, 2013
My PC with Windows 8 Pro doesn't read any kind of discs. I first tried a movie then it reads, a little disc appears on the cursor which means that the disc is being read. But all of a sudden, it fails at the end and doesn't read the disc. Even a bootable disc, it just stays black with a blinking line then it fails to read it as well. No errors or messages, it just proceeds to the Windows 8 loading screen.

My WMC has been working just fine since it was released for Windows 8. I opened the programme today to check tv programmes only to find that "Viewing or Listening Conflict - No tuner available to satisfy the current request".
I have a TV Tuner card : AVerMedia H751 Hybrid Analog/DVB-T with the latest and only drivers installed. by visiting AVer Media website.
When I did a compatibility test for Windows 8 there was no conflict, hence I've been viewing TV with WMC until today.
What happened today, nothing that I know of. Windows update yesterday, so I did a system restore, no such luck it made no difference.
My system is Wndows 8 Pro with Media Centre
Intel Core i5 CPU
320GHz
8Gb RAM
64 bit OS
My husband's computer is on the same line for TV and his WMC is working just fine so it's not the connections from the wall unit to PC.

Yesterday, I restored my Inspiron 15 to it's factory settings. Post-reset, I installed all drivers for Windows 8 directly from the Dell website except for the AMD driver which I took from the AMD website (just wanting to get the latest directly from the source, I guess). I also used that "Dell Detect" thingy to make sure I have all the latest drivers for everything.
After installing, everything worked great, but I realized that when the display turns off / when I shut down the laptop / when I close the lid, it does not turn off the computer or hibernating it or making go to sleep - it just keep running but there is no display, total darkness. Trying to press the power button / F4-F5 / any other button-pressing related solution did not work, only hard-reset.
Googling this issue, I found that it is very common, and many people with almost brand new Dell laptops, just like me, have encountered the same problem. In most of the solutions offered it was said that doing so would cause the system to mainly use the Intel Graphics HD card and not the AMD, meaning that for games and graphics, the AMD won't matter, which doesn't seem to be fair after paying extra exactly so I can have a dedicated card.
Either way, I started with the first which was using Windows Update. After checking the Windows Update updates list, I saw 2-graphic card related items - something called Graphics Adapter WDDM, one for the AMD card and the other for the Intel Graphics HD. After installing this update, I realized I can successfully turn off the laptop.
Once I turned it back on this morning, I got a pop-message:
I then realized that it just simply doesn't see/use/detect the AMD card. This is how my AMD Catalyst looks right now:
Looking at Everest, you can see it only sees the Intel Graphics HD:
However, device manager is still listing the AMD card as if it's properly working:
And if you look at the event log, you can see that initial driver was installed right after the Windows 8 fresh install I made a day and a half ago, and then there's other events, last night, around the time when I installed the Windows Update thingy:

I tried to make recovery discs but Win 8.1 won't allow that anymore. This is from a MS full install disk, not OEM partition or similar. I tried the flash drive method and it did do that. However, the customer had only a USB flash drive adapter that allows MSD to fit. It accepted that and created the recovery flash drive using that setup. However, upon rebooting it just doesn't go into recovery mode. It just sits there prior to boot menu setup after pressing [ESC] for the laptop. What is going on? I know the flash drive is holding the boot process after I press [ESC] to enter boot menu for the laptop, what gives. I really don't think a true flash drive will work as well, though i couldn't test that at the time.

I recently purchased a WD 1TB external portable hard drive. When I first got it it was immediately recognised by my laptop (a 2 day old Asus Ultrabook S400C). This is my first time with Windows 8 so I am still learning to navigate it.
The first thing I did was transfer 650gb of movies and music across. I didn't format the hard drive first, maybe that was my first mistake. My files were still recognisable on my laptop and my WD TV Live media centre. The next day all of a sudden my media player wouldn't recognise it and when I plugged it back into my laptop it also cannot see it.
The device can be seen in device manager (when I click on properties it says it's working corectly), but not in the drives list in my computer. It is showing as "Disc 2" 'Not Iniitialised' and when I click on 'Initialise' and choose 'MBR' and hit OK it comes up with this error msg: 'The request could not be performed due to an I/O device error'.

I have a new Asus Laptop running 64 bit 8.1 Windows Operating System. It has a celeron processor @ 1.86 Ghz with 4GB of Ram.
The DVD/CD Drive will not auto start any discs, DVD or CD. I have set the auto start at "on" and in the control panel I have it checked to auto play all media. It still does not auto start when I insert a cd or dvd. I can however, manually see the files and play a music CD.

I need to retrieve a couple legacy files that are on a 1.44 disk. I bought a USB 1.44 drive, but win 8.1 doesn't see it in Win explorer; when I went the "find new devices" route (in Devices), it didn't see the Usb 1.44.
I went into bios and enabled some sort of "recognize legacy usb", but that had no effect.
How do I get this thing recognized and installed - it didn't come with any drivers.

I have an Asus TF600T (Vivotab RT) that came with the Asus Keyboard Dock.
I also already had the Microsoft Wedge bluetooth keyboard.
I believe the last time I used with the Wedge keyboard or the Asus Kyeboard Dock SUCCESSFULLY was when I had RT 8.0 on this device.
I have not had need to use the keyboard until the last few days. I updated my Vivotab RT to 8.1 about 6 weeks ago. Last week I took out the Asus Keyboard Dock and connected it and all the tablet would do is make clicking noises whenever I pressed any button. It would not recognize any keystrokes. I rebooted the tablet while connected to the dock and same problem. I thought maybe the Keyboard Dock needed to be charged so I did not think anything else about it and plugged it into the charger overnight to let it charge.
I have not messed with that keyboard since that night. Tonight I get to work and I had 2 hours to kill so I decided to get my Wedge Keyboard that I have used with my Android tablet with no issues and on my RT I went into Bluetooth and paired the keyboard successfully. YES, it recognized the number code I was asked to type into the keyboard. Pair was successful and it said it was paired and it installed a driver (which looks good in device manager) but now this keyboard is behaving the same way. All the tablet is doing is clicking anytime I press a key on the keyboard. It will not recognize any keys for typing or anything else. Again, I rebooted the tablet and no luck.
I have a bluetooth mouse AND a bluetooth speaker which I HAVE been using successfully with my Vivotab RT for the last month and my bluetooth mouse which I have here at work is working fine on the tablet. I did go ahead and delete all the blueooth devices, turn the bluetooth off and on, reboot the tablet, re-paired the keyboard, successfully paired it.. and now it's back to just making the tablet click.

I was using my laptop at home and was trying to connect a USB external hard drive. About one second after I connected the device, I get a pop-up saying the device was not recognized or the device malfunctioned (which isn't the case as the device works on other computers). I tried using a thumb drive, a USB mouse and a headset, only to get the same pop-up. The computer has the Intel 4th Gen i7 4500, and is currently running Windows 8.1 (x64).
When I checked the Universal Serial Bus Controllers using the Device Manager, I see four items:
1. Generic USB Hub
2. Intel(R) 8 Series USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 - 9C26
3. USB Root Hub
4. USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller
The fourth controller has a warning sign beside it, and when I click on the controller, it says "the device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)" When I try to update the driver, or delete then re-install, nothing changes. I've tried downloading the USB 3.0 eXtensible (...) driver which I've read could be the fix, and it says that the machine doesn't meet the system requirements. I feel like I'm missing an "Intel(R) 8 Series" controller seeing as the one I have says "#1", but whenever I scan for new drivers or driver updates, nothing comes up.

Version: 8.1, 8.1.1 ... When updates from windows-updated are installed (which requires reboot), the "Restart now" button appears after installation. However, I decided not to restart at that time. After completing my job I shutdown by right click on start icon -> Shutdown or sign out -> Shutdown. I started my laptop the next day and checked for updates, I still see the same page where "Restart now" option is shown. With this, you cannot further check for updates.
The shutdown from start-icon is not recognized as "restart". I also checked the update history. The updates installed the other day were shown as "Pending restart".
This is happening for quite sometime. Technically shutdown and start is to be considered as restart. When shutdown from start-icon is selected, what exactly happens? Is it not shutting the PC completely?

My BT keyboard is no longer discoverable by my ASUS Vivotab ME 400C.
Seemed to suddenly stop working after a couple of incidents where a letter would be repeated 1 hundred times. (i.e. "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" for "e")
The keyboard was recognized by my Blackberry and is working.
I went to Windows Support section and it said to go to PC Settings/Devices/Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on, but I was unable to locate a place to turn Bluetooth off or on.
I went into Device ManagerBluetoothBluetooth Radio and found status "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43)."
This may have occurred quite shortly after I installed an ASUS BIOS update, but I think it was a couple of days at least. I installed Windows 8.1 when it was initially released and had problems with SDBUS shutting down the tablet. The BIOS update fixed that.
I checked the Driver on the Bluetooth radio and it says it's the best one for the device.
I thought maybe I should uninstall/re-install the driver but I've never done this. That is I don't know if the Bluetooth icon will disappear altogether or something wierd.

we ordered a bunch of Asus T100TA transformer book tablets for a customer. One of them wouldn't recognize bluetooth or wi-fi and it had a problem with the Broadcom Serial Bus Driver over UART Bus Enumerator. After numerous driver downloads and installs and even a full factory restore (whatever option in windows 8 where it deletes everything and reinstalls the OS), the issue still persisted. Since the tablet was brand new, we just submitted a DOA request from our wholesaler and sent the tablet back. No big deal, figured it was a hardware issue. The other day, a Lenovo tablet came in with the EXACT same problem. Again driver installs, factory restore etc and the issue is still there. SO obviously it's not a hardware issue Again, both units have had drivers, bios and factory restores and the issue is still there, immediately after factory restore.

When Windows 8 menu appears on start and I choose W7 - instead of loading W7directly , the computer is new-starting again and only than starts w7. That's a funny "behaviour"....
Also, after starting the computer, the menu is not directly shown up, first is this turning wi8 circle (like in the setup) and only about 30 sec. later comes the menu. I am using windows 8 enterprise, test version.

Have a question regarding "Local Account". I'm having problems connecting to the Win 8 laptop from Win 7 as it will not accept my sign in credentials. With that, am I to assume that this is because the credential aren't "Local", and thus this is what this is for???
It will not accept the "Microsoft" account I use to log into Win 8 laptop.
With that, if I choose to go with the "local account" can I easily switch back to the Microsoft one?

1. Can I install a non-UEFI version of Windows 7 on my laptop, if so how?
2. Will installing a non-UEFI version of Windows 7 on my laptop break it?
3. Can I use EasyBCD for UEFI?
4. How do I create a UEFI windows 7?

In a few days I will receive a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon with Windows 8 installed. And separately I will receive an OEM Win7. Win7 is certainly what I intend to use, and I had originally thought I would wipe out Windows 8 and install Win7. But now I am wondering if I can somehow preserve Windows 8 for occasional use. (I would have ordered the machine with Win7 but this is a refurbished machine.)
I would rather not have to understand UEFI. (I'm sure it would be interesting, I just have other things to do with my time.) And, although I do it sometimes, and will if I have to, I do not like diddling with BIOS settings.
I know that factory installed operating systems generally can't be moved to other machines. And I fear that the factory installed Windows 8 that I will receive may not even tolerate being installed, e.g., in a smaller partition or under something like VMware (another complication I'd like to avoid).

I have a Samsung Series 5, 530U (the remaining digits I don't recall right now).
I purchased it from a digital superstore, like a market, rather than a regular PC store.
The device is set for Windows 7, although on purchase, I asked for Windows 8 to be installed.
Now, a BSOD has stopped me gaining access through refreshing, restarting, safe mode or any of the options available through the troubleshooting menu.
I retrieved my data using a SATA, and now wish to wipe the system of Windows 8, and avoid all the hassle it has brought me, returning to it's factory settings of W7.
I do not have a disk, or anything to do so. When I go through the menu on start-up, I click 'restore system' but I am then prompted for 'recovery mdeia or installation disk'.
Is it possible to just reset the whole PC and start from the day it left the factory?
If I need a disk to reset the original settings, where can I get it from and would simply loading it when prompted fix my problem?
All I want is to be able to use my own PC. I want Windows 8 cleared off and a reliable, original settings PC.

Is there something wrong with how one user account is set up that is causing the problem. Do I have to delete the user account and try re-establishing it.

i intend to use SkyDrive for the documents, and will use the mail app, or install Outlook on the tablet to have a copy of emails on it, but I am not sure how to make sure that contacts and calendar are synchronised on both machines. I use a local to UK mail provider (btinternet).
how to align contacts and calendars across both machines?
