I have a new Asus Laptop running 64 bit 8.1 Windows Operating System. It has a celeron processor @ 1.86 Ghz with 4GB of Ram.
The DVD/CD Drive will not auto start any discs, DVD or CD. I have set the auto start at "on" and in the control panel I have it checked to auto play all media. It still does not auto start when I insert a cd or dvd. I can however, manually see the files and play a music CD.
Just upgraded my laptop I have now noticed that whatever disc I put in the Dvd / Cd drive, it does not recognize it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter last "patch-tuesday" my Windows 8.1 don't assign drive letters to hotswaped HDD's and USB keys.
When starting my backupdrive (eSATA), it is now without a drive letter, I can give it one though in disk-management, but before last tuesday, it was given a letter automatic. Same problem when I connect an USB-HDD or an USB-stick.
Is there a way to get back "autoassign of a drive letter"? (don't know the correct word for this function in English).
I've been burning some dvds and loaded in the next dvd to burn and it the drive couldnt see that there was a disc put in. So I thought maybe the dvd was faulty and tried a few more - the dvd rw drive didnt read that there were blank dvds put in. So I put a dvd that was finished burning in and still nothing.

But all of a sudden, it fails at the end and doesn't read the disc. Even a bootable disc, it just stays black with a blinking line then it fails to read it as well. View 1 Replies View Relatedtoday i came home to my alienware x51 in some dell system recovery screen, i asked my kid what happened today she said the lights flickered several times, during a freak storm, So my pc must have tried to auto start several times, this is not good at all, i'm so lucky no damage was done at least so far. But how do i stop this behavior from happening again is there a setting i can turn off, so if we have another light flicker or loss of power that it never does it again. I just hope in the long run that my computer is not damaged who knows how many times it tried to reboot.

Was playing with a Windows 8 machine today and noticed that it would scroll the start screen by having the mouse simply to the right side of the screen...without having to use the scroll bar at the bottom of the screen.
What enables that, is it a driver, is it built into Windows 8, etc? I've got some other laptops around running Windows 8 and with an external mouse attached, they aren't auto scrolling.
Skype on 8.1. When I look in the task manager->start up its not listed.
However, I then get messages and calls - so it must be running
Of course, with the tile version there are no settings that I can find to turn the darn thing off and it doesn't appear in the system tray.
How can I take control over skype so that it launches when I want it to?
My Intel HD 4600 graphics puts 3 little apps to be started automatically. I know they are related to: intercepting hotkeys - hkcmd.exedisplaying tray icon - igfxtray.exedisplaying settings GUI - igfxpers.exe The thing is that I don't use hotkeys and have disabled them in Intel Graphics options, I've also removed Intel Graphics icon from the tray.
Thus, I'd expect the first two Intel apps to be removed from items set to auto-start at system bootup. However, they are still there. Is it correct? Shouldn't they be disabled when related functions are turned off?
Is it safe to simply delete the related registry entries and leave only the last app?
I use a Sandisk Cruzer Extreme USB 3.0 32gb flash drive. When I plug the flash drive in, autoplay does not come up however the flash drive shows up on My Computer, but not Device Manager. It does not show up on the tray (the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon), but other USB flash drives do. The drive is fully working and I can transfer files to and from the drive, I just cannot autoplay nor eject the drive safely.
I've done the obvious such as ensuring autoplay is enabled, formatting the drive, trying different ports, and now I'm not sure what the problem can be.
I've observed that it's only the first USB port on the front panel that has this problem, but all other USB drives autoplay fine on this port. (I think only usb 2.0 - 3.0 devices do not autplay)
My laptop tends to install all the printers on the network where I work. I dont use any of those printers and having them installed is pointless and a pain. I can delete them, but it will go and install them all again. Is there anyway I can disable this so it doesn't keep doing it?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried to make recovery discs but Win 8.1 won't allow that anymore. This is from a MS full install disk, not OEM partition or similar. I tried the flash drive method and it did do that. However, the customer had only a USB flash drive adapter that allows MSD to fit. It accepted that and created the recovery flash drive using that setup. However, upon rebooting it just doesn't go into recovery mode. It just sits there prior to boot menu setup after pressing [ESC] for the laptop. What is going on? I know the flash drive is holding the boot process after I press [ESC] to enter boot menu for the laptop, what gives. I really don't think a true flash drive will work as well, though i couldn't test that at the time.

I have had problems with win 8.1 to the point that I got in but was frozen and had to start over. F2 does not work.
Had, and still have installed in machine, an SSD with Windows 7 as OS Had, and still have, a Western Digital 2 TB external HD attached. It was used as back up for the original set up. This also has the Smart Ware software installed but which I have not used.
Tried a dual boot on a new SSD using Windows 8.1 recently but turned out ot be a pain so I simply installed 8.1 on new disk.

I installed Windows 8 with the program PWBOOT in USB disk drive and some of the apps in the metro Start Screen they didn't installed. So I need to disconnect that hub and start windows 8 without it and connect it after windows 8 has booted. Said hub has two drives attached: 1 32GB and a 1 TB. How come Windows 8 cannot handle it?

Since I installed W8 64x my networks drivers won't start at boot, therefore I have to disable the drivers via Device Manager and re-enable them in order to work. (see attachment for the only error I get - I don't know whether there is a log in another place?)
