When I go to Computer Management my main (OS) drive shows as "Disk 1" and my 2nd internal data drive shows as "Disk 0". Should I switch the SATA cables so that the main drive will show as "Disk 0 and the 2nd internal drive as "Disk 1"?
View 5 RepliesI had one sata drive wanted to add second sata as data drive.i disconnected older hard drive connected new one,installed windows 8 on it,everything went fine.I did not format older drive yet,reconnected it afterwards,changed boot order in BIOS but the second sata drive reads bus number 0,one with operating system reads bus number 1.Is this O.K.?Usually bus number 0 should be the operating system is on.How can I change this?

The heat sink on the card blocks the SATA port that the DVD drive is plugged into (SATA1) so I've switched the DVD drive to SATA2. The drive is now showing as connected to port2 in the BIOS, but in windows (Windows 8 64-bit) it isn't detecting the DVD drive at all? I've seen other posts about this on the internet suggesting to add a line to the registry, but I've done that and it doesn't solve the problem.

Each time at start up, it would automatically go to the blue screen of death and never get past that point. I wound up getting a new laptop operating on windows 8, and now I'm attempting to recover some of my files from the old hard drive. After a little reading, I discovered that you can pull the old drive, connect it to another computer via a USB cable, and attempt to recover the data on the drive. So I ran down to the local best buy and picked up an Apricorn SATA Wire. Here's the problem. Every time I hook the hard drive up to the computer via the USB wire, my computer instantly goes to a blue screen and goes into a cycle of restarting itself over and over. Does this mean that my old hard drive is just too far gone to recover, or is there another method that I can try?

This morning, my laptop wouldn't boot and I got a message saying I needed to use the recovery disk to fix the problem. A little investigating using the command prompt from that disk revealed my system and data partitions had no drive letter assigned to them. A little work with Diskpart fixed that but left me wondering what would have caused them to disappear.

If I leave my 500gb plugged in while installing on the ssd. For some odd and stupid reason. Windows 7 will put the main boot file on the hdd. Instead of putting it on the ssd. Even when I have told Windows 7 to install it on the ssd. Does Windows 8 fix and address this issue? Or will I have to only have my ssd plugged in when installing Windows 8? Then once installed. Plug back in my 500gb drive?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to get my external hard drives setup from a freshly rebooted installed computer. I recently placed an external hard drive with all my back up files on my computer, but this drive is not going to be my main drive. I have two others I will be using as a main hdd and a backup drive that are brand new.
So, the question is, if I were to use a utility like the Windows 8.1 disk management feature to either delete the drive letter or even change it to another one, will that mess up the external hard drive or even lose data? Because until I transfer my files to my backup disk I am afraid of losing my only copy of my files.
I have 3 disks in my computer, of which 2 are SSDs.
I swapped the SATA ports between one SSD and the HDD so as to give the SSD a SATA port with maximum 6gb/s transfer speed, and now the access to the HDD is denied. The drive letters are correct, as they should be.
The user (myself, admin) did not change.
What can be done about it? I already tried to check the ownership of the drive and says STEVECOMPUTER/Administrators, which looks good, as my user account is an admin. Still, I have no access.
How do I slave a hard drive on my Windows 8 Computer?
I had the hard drive slaved to my xp and it was fine, I plug it in to Windows 8 and it doesn't recognize it. Plug it back into the XP and it shows up fine. I'm not really experienced with this, I'm used to just hooking the hard drive up and booting up with XPs and it knows there's another HD available for storage, is the process different with windows 8? is there something specific I need to do to get it to recognize the HD?
My computer has the BSOD that says inaccessible boot drive and i think its because of the sata mode selection. But there is only one selection AHCI when I think I need ata. I don't know if I do need it be there hard drives serial ports say ata.

Have tried a variety of things like checking all current drivers, turning off hybrid sleep, power troubleshooter, windows update and the like on instruction but my ASUS p7p55d-e doesn't seem to have any Windows 8 specific drivers.

I resized the main partition of the c drive and after the reboot something strange happened. I do have a mouse cursor but the screen is black. No metro, no regular desktop, nothing there. When I do control alt delete I get into task stuff and from there I can logon or log off users but all have the same result, a Black screen with only a mouse c cursor. No hardware changes done. Tried to do an auto repair but no result.

Then I shrink the space of the D drive and cant move it to the C drive so finally i just take the shrinking memory and make new drive F.. My MB has SATA 3 and I have a Samsung HD 154UI drive on SATA /300 where I have Windows 8 x64 installed. The performance under Windows is 5.9. This is the lowest on the list. CPU 7.4, Memory 7.4, Graphics 7.9, Gaming graphics 7.9, Hard disk 5.9...Is there a way to get it higher without replacing the drive. The drive is new (only 3 months old) I have two of these drives and two Seagate drives that are 2 tera which are 1 year old.

I've taken the drive out of the laptop and plugged it into my Windows 7 desktop using an external USB bay. I hear the computer detect the drive but it will never show up as a drive. If I look in Computer Management it shows up in there.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI use an internal data drive for most of my data. In win 8 the drive is E and I've created several folders and populated them with data. I then rebooted my machine to a Win 7 pro system and added a folder and some data to the E drive. No issues.
When I go back to Win 8 i can't see the folder and files I created on the E drive from Win 7.
I haven't gone back to Win 7 yet to see if they are there, but I would be willing to bet that I will see them in Win 7. How do I resolve?
Have you ever successfully rescued your wanted data back from USB flash drive? In fact, I recently also formatted my USB flash drive mistakenly and all stored data was lost. But, many of these lost files there are still important and useful for me. So, I just wonder whether I can find a way to rescue them all back.

That includes data disks burnt using Nero and ISO Joliet format; and either mutli-session or finalized after burning. And disks formatted like a flash drive in UDF format using Windows 8 burning software. And is the same for R or RW +/- disks.
Rebooting sometimes fixes the program, other times not.
I have an Intel mob and CPU but Intel do not support drivers for Windows 8 so all drivers are generic Windows 8. Running driver update from device manager says all drivers are up to date.
I also intermittently, but regularly, get the printer and webcam USB2 drives not detecting these devices. And occasionally the USB3 external hard drives. USB drivers are also up to date.
I am planning on building a new computer, and I want to put a 250GB SSD (Samsung 840 EVO) in it to use with 8.1 Pro. However, most of the programs and data I need are still on the old computer's boot drive, specifically all of my STEAM games (none of which I have the DVDs for.)
My question is if I can create symlinks to the old boot drive without losing data on it. This will most likely be a temporary measure, as the drive's a fairly slow 5900RPM Barracuda, and I want something faster, but I can't afford a better one just yet...

As the title states, I'm switching back from Mac to PC. I have all of my precious photos (I love photography in particular) and music stored on an external hard drive (iomega), but it's been formatted for Mac OS. I read that you can't transfer from a Mac OS formatted drive to a PC.
Telling me to reformat the ext. hdd to fat32 isn't going to work, because first of all, that would delete the valuable data, and fat32 only allows the transfer of files less than 4GB.
How I can transfer all of my data on my Mac OS X-formatted external drive to my new Windows PC. It is absolutely essential.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had Windows 8 32 bit installed on a WD5000AAJS 500 GB hard drive that died on me. I had a backup of it made using the free version of Paragon Backup & Recovery. Apparently there is something wrong with the disk image so I am unable to recover from it (spent the past week trying everything I can think of or find on the internet to get the image to work). Anyways, there are some files on the hd that I would REALLY like to recover.
I can connect the HD to another PC running Win 7 and it starts to spin (no noise or excessive vibrations). The PC sees the HD as an unallocated drive with 134217728 GB when I look in Computer Management. I read somewhere that this represents the largest possible size for a Win 7 HD (something like that - I'm sure I'm wrong, though). Anyways, I was thinking that since at least the HD spins and the PC can see it, there must be some way to recover the files off of it. There is a MySQL db on there that I would like to recover and some batch and vbscript files I would like to recover.
I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Essentials, it's filled with tons of old photos, movies, docs, games, and I'm scared to think of what else. The SATA to USB connector broke on it, so I took the drive apart and put it inside my computer. I opened up device manager because it wasn't showing up automatically and the 2TB is showing up as unallocated, I'm freaking out now because I'm scared the data was somehow deleted.What do I do?

I have just bought an AIO Asus desktop with 1 Tb of storage. The c: (Windows)drive is allocated 100gb and the d: drive 931gb. I just want to transfer all the data from my old computer. This was pretty much all in the folder c:>Users>Myname, but when I try to transfer it all into the same folder on the new computer, obviously with 100gb there is not enough space.
