Updates :: Win Update Not Recognizing Shutdown From Start Icon

Apr 17, 2014

Version: 8.1, 8.1.1 ... When updates from windows-updated are installed (which requires reboot), the "Restart now" button appears after installation. However, I decided not to restart at that time. After completing my job I shutdown by right click on start icon -> Shutdown or sign out -> Shutdown. I started my laptop the next day and checked for updates, I still see the same page where "Restart now" option is shown. With this, you cannot further check for updates.

The shutdown from start-icon is not recognized as "restart". I also checked the update history. The updates installed the other day were shown as "Pending restart".

This is happening for quite sometime. Technically shutdown and start is to be considered as restart. When shutdown from start-icon is selected, what exactly happens? Is it not shutting the PC completely?

Updates :: Shutdown Hanging On Installing Update 3 Of 4

Jan 28, 2014

Today I received a prompt to install 4 important updates. These seemed to download OK (total 32MB). I don't know what exactly was included in these updates, I just clicked on Install and carried on with other tasks and operations.

After a little while I got the usual prompt to restart my computer to finish installing updates. I did this, the shutting down message appeared followed by 'Keep your PC plugged in until this is done. Installing update 3 of 4'.

This was at 1536GMT. It's now 2223GMT in my timezone and I've still got thie same message displayed with no sign of any further progress. Should I disconnect the main power supply regardless of the message, or is there another step to take? I vaguely recall this happening when I had Vista, which I eventually abandoned.

Tablets :: Vivotab RT Not Recognizing Keyboards After 8.1 Update

Dec 19, 2013

I have an Asus TF600T (Vivotab RT) that came with the Asus Keyboard Dock.

I also already had the Microsoft Wedge bluetooth keyboard.

I believe the last time I used with the Wedge keyboard or the Asus Kyeboard Dock SUCCESSFULLY was when I had RT 8.0 on this device.

I have not had need to use the keyboard until the last few days. I updated my Vivotab RT to 8.1 about 6 weeks ago. Last week I took out the Asus Keyboard Dock and connected it and all the tablet would do is make clicking noises whenever I pressed any button. It would not recognize any keystrokes. I rebooted the tablet while connected to the dock and same problem. I thought maybe the Keyboard Dock needed to be charged so I did not think anything else about it and plugged it into the charger overnight to let it charge.

I have not messed with that keyboard since that night. Tonight I get to work and I had 2 hours to kill so I decided to get my Wedge Keyboard that I have used with my Android tablet with no issues and on my RT I went into Bluetooth and paired the keyboard successfully. YES, it recognized the number code I was asked to type into the keyboard. Pair was successful and it said it was paired and it installed a driver (which looks good in device manager) but now this keyboard is behaving the same way. All the tablet is doing is clicking anytime I press a key on the keyboard. It will not recognize any keys for typing or anything else. Again, I rebooted the tablet and no luck.

I have a bluetooth mouse AND a bluetooth speaker which I HAVE been using successfully with my Vivotab RT for the last month and my bluetooth mouse which I have here at work is working fine on the tablet. I did go ahead and delete all the blueooth devices, turn the bluetooth off and on, reboot the tablet, re-paired the keyboard, successfully paired it.. and now it's back to just making the tablet click.

Updates :: Force Updates Installation During Shutdown?

Oct 6, 2013

It seems that Windows 8 will only install some updates after a restart. No surprises here. However, since the Windows 8 "user" shutdown is not a real shutdown, but a hibernation (hence it will not be followed by a restart, and will not install updates), Windows 8 forces us to an extra restart/reboot. Is there a a way to simulate the logical behaviour of all previous Windows editions? That is, when updates that require a restart are installed, if the user shuts down, the updates get installed and the pc shuts down...Currently, my only away around this, is to select restart, wait... then enter the BIOS and turn off the pc there... Not intuitive.

System Won't Sleep Or Shutdown After 8.1 Update

Oct 20, 2013

Serious problem after 8.1 update from windows 8. My Dell notebook won't sleep when idled or lid closed, nor will it shutdown. The screen turns black, and the LED blacklight and fan are still on and cannot revert to normal mode unless I do a hard reset.

Updated to latest drivers and windows update, to no avail. Checked sleep and power options, and they're still the same as before.

Add Shutdown / Restart Tiles To Start Screen

Dec 28, 2012

From Winbeta: Simply copy the following code into a new txt file and rename it to whatever you like, just add the .vbs to the file extension. For example: shutdown.vbs. Once this is done, simply double click the script and it will create the tiles for you. If you are unable to create a .vbs document, make sure you have "show file names extensions" enabled in Folder Options within Windows 8.

set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
strStartMenu = WshShell.SpecialFolders("StartMenu")
set oShellLink = WshShell.CreateShortcut(strStartMenu & "Shutdown.lnk")
oShellLink.TargetPath = "%systemroot%System32shutdown.exe"
oShellLink.Arguments = "-s -t 0"
oShellLink.WindowStyle = 1

[Code] ......

"Shutdown, Restart and Log Off buttons have been created. You can now pin them to the Start Screen of your Windows 8 computer (if they are not already there)."

Create Update Icon In Windows 8

Because I don't have Windows Updates set to install automatically I get the message to open Windows Update and install new updates every day, sometimes several times a day.

Getting to Windows Update is more round about in Windows 8 than is was in 7, which had a button on the start menu.

Today I created a link and put it on my taskbar.

Start Icon (in Metro) Is Missing

May 23, 2014

So I noticed the Start button's Windows icon is missing in my metro mode. I'm not exactly sure what it's called, but it's the multitask pane on the left side of the screen that appears when you hover over the top left corner and slide down. Rather than a Windows icon it now assumes the Accent color in PC settings.

I have some modding software installed, such as UxStyle, Aero Glass for Windows 8, and a custom theme, although this issue existed without these installed.

how to get it back. Attached are two pics, one default and one on hover.

(My keyboard has no Print Screen button and Snipping tool doesn't seem to work in Metro)

Open Charms / Start Screen From Icon?

Is it possible to open the Start Screen (Metro) and / or the charms bar from Icons?

We have lots of servers running Server 2012 and when in a Remote Desktop Window its difficult to try and move the cursor in the 1 pixel corner that brings up the Start Charm...

And Pressing the "Windows" key doesn't get translated so no Win+C ...

So I we could create an icon on the desktop to bring up metro or Charms that would be great!

Updates :: Can't Update Other Microsoft Products

May 8, 2012

Windows 8 itself is updating fine using Windows Update. However, it doesn't provide updates for Office and other MS products. Where it says in the WU dialog box "You receive updates for:" it indicates "Windows Only." Going into Windows Update settings does not offer the "Microsoft Update" option that is available in windows 7. The link to "find out more" about updating other MS products takes me to this very unuseful page: [URL]

I know from seeing others' screen shots in this forum that updating for other Microsoft products is not disabled in Windows 8. How do I update Office (I know there are new sucurity updates for Office that were released today and I'd like to have them!)?

Updates :: How To Revert A Windows Update

Jun 17, 2014

My son has an MSI Laptop running Windows 8.1. Following a recent Windows update (he cannot be more specific) he is no longer able to use his Admin (the only one) account. He sees the mouse pointer but the rest of the screen is black. Ctrl-Alt-Del does bring up a panel offering the usual options to shut down, reboot, Task Manager, etc. - but when I select Task Manager with the intention of seeing what processes are running,the dialogue does appear, but before it is properly displayed it vanishes.

Meanwhile the HDD light is burning constantly. If I simply leave the machine for 30 minutes or so, then the HDD activity subsides but there is still a blank screen. Moving the mouse pointer to the top or bottom right hand side of the screen has no effect.

Unfortunately we did not have the wits to set restore points Interestingly the other account (not administrator) is working without problem.

Updates :: Can't Change Update Settings

May 11, 2014

Ever since upgrading to Windows 8.1 I haven't been able to change my update settings. The drop-down is greyed out and can't be clicked on. Above the drop down it says "Some settings are managed by your system administrator"

I've deleted my user account and created a new one, but the problem remains. I've unlocked the Administrator account, but even through that account the settings can't be changed. I'm not in a homegroup, as I've heard this could solve the problem and I've disconnected and reconnected my Microsoft account to my User Account to no avail.

Windows keeps updating and I don't have the bandwidth to continue this way.
