Is it possible to open the Start Screen (Metro) and / or the charms bar from Icons?
We have lots of servers running Server 2012 and when in a Remote Desktop Window its difficult to try and move the cursor in the 1 pixel corner that brings up the Start Charm...
And Pressing the "Windows" key doesn't get translated so no Win+C ...
So I we could create an icon on the desktop to bring up metro or Charms that would be great!
Likes to use the Windows 8 Start Screen that has all the tiles on it. Normally, she clicks on the "Mail" icon to get to her email, but now when she clicks on the icon it doesn't go to her email and instead it goes straight to her desktop. I tried clicking another icon; the "weather" one, and it too goes to the desktop. She told me she downloaded a couple games from iWin a few days ago and I noticed a new toolbar in her browser so I tried disabling that, but no change. I've checked what the default browser is, Internet Explorer (what she normally uses). I also tried making Chrome the default browser but still no change.

I opened a Scan image and by default it used the Picture Program that was bundled on the Start Screen.
Somehow I made the Scan the default new icon, which looks awful. How can I get the Icon back to its original?
I'm getting confused about the new start button that was supposedly to come with the Win 8.1 update. I cant' find anything different from Win 8. Is the start button the icon found in the lower left corner of the screen?...or on my computer keyboard?...it looks like a window. I was expecting that I would get a dropdown start menu with Win 8.1 like I get with Win 7 when I click on that button. I would really like to have the Win 7 dropdown start menu when I click on that button in 8.1.

From the start screen I can only open desktop and Microsoft software. When I click on other app tiles the screen shows the app logo as if it is opening but it doesn't open and goes back to the start screen.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOn windows 8 internet explorer used to open up as an app on the windows start screen. Today, I decided to download firefox to improve speed. However, I found that firefox only opened in 'desktop' and I couldn't work out how to open it as an app, like I did with internet explorer. I uninstalled firefox and repinned explorer to start screen and toolbar and reset it as default only to find it too wouldn't open on start screen now, coming up with the message shown by the image. . I know it's not a problem with the internet because if I wrench it onto the desktop it works perfectly. Why won't the internet work on the startscreen? How can I fix it?

I'm setting up a new Windows 8 PC. In my Win7 PC, I have an icon on the taskbar that holds all open folders. I'll call it the "Open Folders" icon. I don't remember how that icon got on Win7's taskbar. How can I create a similar icon on Windows 8's taskbar.
EXPLANATION:
In Win7, say I open the C: drive and click on "Program Files". Then I minimize that window. The "C:Program Files" folder minimizes to the "Open Folders" icon on Win7's taskbar.
Then say I open drive D: and click on a folder named "Photos". Then I minimize that window. The "D:Photos" folder minimizes to the same "Open Folders" icon on Win7's taskbar.
Now if I hover over the "Open Folders" icon on the taskbar, links to the Program Files folder and the Photos folder pop up. I can click the desired folder to open it.
How can I create a similar "Open Folders" icon on Windows 8's taskbar?
Suddenly, when I try to access the control panel, all that happens is the control panel icon shows on the task bar but I can not open it. Nothing happens when I click on it. I've rebooted several times with no change.

I'm not exactly sure what it's called, but it's the multitask pane on the left side of the screen that appears when you hover over the top left corner and slide down. Rather than a Windows icon it now assumes the Accent color in PC settings.
I have some modding software installed, such as UxStyle, Aero Glass for Windows 8, and a custom theme, although this issue existed without these installed.

My father inlaw just got a new computer with windows 8 I am not familiar with windows 8.
When he starts the computer and goes to the start button all the icon show up and when he presses the E internet icon it comes up with unable to connect then theres a push to reset button and nothing happens. Know when he touches the background (personal home I am guessing) icon his home background comes up and shows google chrome and when he touches it it connects and down in the left hand corner of screen the E internet icon is there and when he touches it the internet comes up.

Version: 8.1, 8.1.1 ... When updates from windows-updated are installed (which requires reboot), the "Restart now" button appears after installation. However, I decided not to restart at that time. After completing my job I shutdown by right click on start icon -> Shutdown or sign out -> Shutdown. I started my laptop the next day and checked for updates, I still see the same page where "Restart now" option is shown. With this, you cannot further check for updates.
The shutdown from start-icon is not recognized as "restart". I also checked the update history. The updates installed the other day were shown as "Pending restart".
This is happening for quite sometime. Technically shutdown and start is to be considered as restart. When shutdown from start-icon is selected, what exactly happens? Is it not shutting the PC completely?
Somehow, the Folders icon disappeared from my Start screen, without which Windows 8.1 is almost unusable. Now I can't locate any folders and can't see anywhere else to access them.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to remove an icon from my windows 8 start menu. I have uninstalled the program (Diablo 3), but the icon remains under the games category. If I right click I get the option to uninstall, which brings me to the program uninstaller under control panel; Diablo 3 is not listed here. Right click also allows me to "open file location" which gives me the games screen as seen below. Right clicking on Diablo 3 here does nothing. I have no option to delete the entry.

View 2 Replies View RelatedRunning Windows 8 Pro x64 as a Domain User with full Admin privileges, I am unable to use File History. I cannot open/start the File History tool. When I attempt to click on it from the Control Panel, nothing happens. When I try running it from the Metro search tool, it switches to the desktop and nothing loads. I've also tried in the Action Center, under Maintenance, "File History is Off. Turn On." Clicking "Turn On" does nothing.
All other items under the Control Panel that I have tried open and work with no problems.
I also tried in a "clean boot". System file checker reported no errors.
I just noticed in Control Panel there is "Windows 7 File Recovery". If I launch that and try to set up a Windows 7-style backup, it seems to work. I suppose I could just use this older tool instead of the new File History, although I haven't researched the differences.
I have another machine with the same version of Windows 8, and I am able to launch File History with no problems. I click File History from control panel and am taken to another screen that allows me to enable it. No such screen on the problem machine. The only main difference is the working machine is a regular user account; whereas, the non working machine is a domain account
I just had to reformat my hard drive and when I did I went ahead and updated to windows 8.1. I have everything set back up the way I like but I can't get the start menu to always open on my secondary monitor. I can set it to open on whatever monitor I'm currently using, but I only want it to open on the one specific monitor that ISN'T my main display.
I've tried using windows key + shift + arrows and that moves the start menu to the right monitor, but only that time. When I reopen it, it just pops up on my main display.
I've tried clicking on the bottom left of the second monitor and opening the start menu, but when I hit the windows key again it opens it on the main monitor.
One of the biggest complaints about the Windows 8 start menu/screen, is the fact that it takes up the whole screen, unnecessarily blocking everything a desktop user is currently working on.
I've been playing around with Windows 8.1 Preview, and am getting used to snapping the start screen to the left side, like you can with metro apps, using Win+Arrow.
Because Windows 8 treats the Desktop like an app, it can be displayed on the right half of the screen, while the start menu is snapped to the left half of the screen.
So I'm just wondering whether there's a way to force the start screen to always open at half the fullscreen size? In other words, always snapped to the size.
This would be a great way to meet the fullscreen-start-menu-haters half-way.
Some times the home group icon will be displayed on my desktop screen and some times it disappears. why is it so?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
