Somehow, the Folders icon disappeared from my Start screen, without which Windows 8.1 is almost unusable. Now I can't locate any folders and can't see anywhere else to access them.

I had the I.E. icon on my toolbar screen up until about a week ago and it disappeared.
So I'm running windows 8 RP for about 3 months got my hard drive partitioned C: Drive where windows 8 installed no problem with that
The other partition A Drive is where I download and Keep Media for my 3d tv ,folder structure as follows
A:/Downloads
A:/Media/TV
A:/Media/2d movies
A:/media/3d movies
so the downloads folder no problem
A:/media folder still there but the folders inside media have gone all my files have gone it first started by letting me open A:/media but not any sub folders it kept saying Access denied when I have full control administration and creator so restarted pc and the 3 sub folders in Media have disappeared
also A:/downloads =6 GB
A:/media = 0 GB
A:/ used space 27 GB
I'm setting up a new Windows 8 PC. In my Win7 PC, I have an icon on the taskbar that holds all open folders. I'll call it the "Open Folders" icon. I don't remember how that icon got on Win7's taskbar. How can I create a similar icon on Windows 8's taskbar.
EXPLANATION:
In Win7, say I open the C: drive and click on "Program Files". Then I minimize that window. The "C:Program Files" folder minimizes to the "Open Folders" icon on Win7's taskbar.
Then say I open drive D: and click on a folder named "Photos". Then I minimize that window. The "D:Photos" folder minimizes to the same "Open Folders" icon on Win7's taskbar.
Now if I hover over the "Open Folders" icon on the taskbar, links to the Program Files folder and the Photos folder pop up. I can click the desired folder to open it.
How can I create a similar "Open Folders" icon on Windows 8's taskbar?
I'm a new Win 8.1 user trying to setup a more normal looking desktop on my wife's new laptop.
In an attempt to populate the desktop toolbar with apps on the start page, I found it can't be done as explained in the tutorial. Either when I touch/hold the app icon, or right mouse click, the app is checked and the bottom application bar appears. However, on the app bar my only choices are: "Unpin from Start", "Uninstall", or "Find in Start". I'm not given the option of "Pin to taskbar". I also don't see the choices: "Open new window", "Run as admin", or "Open file location" that I see in an example under that tutorial.
I'm running this account in admin mode. The most recent Windows update was 5/2014, with no new updates available when checked today. Is there something wrong or a control panel setting I need to enable to see the other choices?
When I logged in my windows 8 I was surprised when I found that most of the tiles that were in my start menu disappeared even the desktop tile and the store tile.
I found an article that suggests creating the apps shortcuts and pasting them in this folder
%ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms
But when I opened this folder I was surprised again to find all my tiles shortcuts there. Nothing is missing at all even the desktop shortcut and store shortcut are there.
Why don't these apps show up in the start menu? I don't remember doing any thing the last time I used my laptop except uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Basic 6

When I'm pasting my shortcuts there they are appearing in Start Screen and I also noticed that when I install any new application it is not added to the start screen automatically as usual ...
I see there is a Classic Start 8 Menu that once installed will give you back the Windows 7 style menu. If you install it, can you still go back to the default Windows 8 Start page if you like?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn my pictures folder, as well as all other folders that I have checked, the option to change the icon size larger or smaller is grayed out.
Solutions I have found use the options to change settings, however, my options are also grayed out so I can't.
Refer to my attachment for a view of my folders.
When I use the Administrator Account everything runs well. I switch to Standard User Account and only when I click on my folders the screen flash to a blank page and take me back to the main desktop page. I tried again and the same thing happen always, flashes to a blank page and take me back to the desktop page. It only when I click on my folders.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy start menu button completely disappeared from the taskbar. I am using DisplayFusion and Start8 so I am not sure if those could cause this issue. I am able to still access the start menu easily by clicking the windows key but would love to fix this.
Due to DisplayFusion I can still see the start menu button on the other taskbar but Start8 does not want to style it or anything.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy desktop picture button has disappeared from my start menu. Is there a way to put the desktop picture button back in the start menu ? I noticed that i can bring up a desktop button by hovering the mouse pointer on the lower left corner but that is lame. I just want my desktop picture button back . also is there any way to have windows 8 open on the desktop ? I do not want to deal with the endless stupid steps required just to open the computer . first i have to raise the unnecessary full screen picture . then i have to type in my password . ( i do not want to type in my password because i am the only person who ever uses my computer and if someone else did i wouldn't care anyhow ) . then i get to the start menu which is filled with buggy programs that never work and now my desktop button has mysteriously disappeared .
I would like for windows 8 to have the option to simply open on my desktop without me doing anything . no password . no start menu . no full screen picture that i have to raise ( what is that thing for ? ) . I realize that the windows 8 start menu and password stuff is mainly due to the people who will use windows 8 with tablets and smart phones etc . but i only use my regular ( rather old ) desktop pc . the password screen and buggy start menu are totally unnecessary and a pita . Give windows 8 desktop users the option of booting the computer up to the desktop screen and bypassing all the other wasted steps . i do not want to use the apps on the start menu . i do not need to enter a password because i do not care if anyone uses the pc. And why did my desktop button disappear from the start menu which i do not even need?
For a week or so whenever I click and go to either email or address book etc. within 20 seconds I get flipped back to the Windows 8 Start page. It happens every time without fail. Is it something I have done or has the system developed a fault?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI just got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and I've lost track of the Start page (I guess they call it Metro), the one with Start up on the left and all the tiles, including the one for Desktop...gone.
Also I don't get the Charm Bar with a swipe, or any other movement for that matter. It opens up to a page with 4 tiles: Weather, Media Hub, Music Hub and Game Hub. I can tap to a page with Apps, a bunch of apps, but no Start Page or Charm Bar.

Normally, she clicks on the "Mail" icon to get to her email, but now when she clicks on the icon it doesn't go to her email and instead it goes straight to her desktop. I tried clicking another icon; the "weather" one, and it too goes to the desktop. She told me she downloaded a couple games from iWin a few days ago and I noticed a new toolbar in her browser so I tried disabling that, but no change. I've checked what the default browser is, Internet Explorer (what she normally uses). I also tried making Chrome the default browser but still no change.

I'm not exactly sure what it's called, but it's the multitask pane on the left side of the screen that appears when you hover over the top left corner and slide down. Rather than a Windows icon it now assumes the Accent color in PC settings.
I have some modding software installed, such as UxStyle, Aero Glass for Windows 8, and a custom theme, although this issue existed without these installed.

We have lots of servers running Server 2012 and when in a Remote Desktop Window its difficult to try and move the cursor in the 1 pixel corner that brings up the Start Charm...
And Pressing the "Windows" key doesn't get translated so no Win+C ...

My father inlaw just got a new computer with windows 8 I am not familiar with windows 8.
When he starts the computer and goes to the start button all the icon show up and when he presses the E internet icon it comes up with unable to connect then theres a push to reset button and nothing happens. Know when he touches the background (personal home I am guessing) icon his home background comes up and shows google chrome and when he touches it it connects and down in the left hand corner of screen the E internet icon is there and when he touches it the internet comes up.

Version: 8.1, 8.1.1 ... When updates from windows-updated are installed (which requires reboot), the "Restart now" button appears after installation. However, I decided not to restart at that time. After completing my job I shutdown by right click on start icon -> Shutdown or sign out -> Shutdown. I started my laptop the next day and checked for updates, I still see the same page where "Restart now" option is shown. With this, you cannot further check for updates.
The shutdown from start-icon is not recognized as "restart". I also checked the update history. The updates installed the other day were shown as "Pending restart".
This is happening for quite sometime. Technically shutdown and start is to be considered as restart. When shutdown from start-icon is selected, what exactly happens? Is it not shutting the PC completely?
I am trying to remove an icon from my windows 8 start menu. I have uninstalled the program (Diablo 3), but the icon remains under the games category. If I right click I get the option to uninstall, which brings me to the program uninstaller under control panel; Diablo 3 is not listed here. Right click also allows me to "open file location" which gives me the games screen as seen below. Right clicking on Diablo 3 here does nothing. I have no option to delete the entry.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWe have a computer that went BSOD this morning on startup. (Windows 8.1 PRO 64 bit) From what we can tell, nothing has changed since last Tuesday/Wednesday. It was shut down every night and restarted everyday for the last 5 days.
This morning, it starts up through normal boot process, shows Windows 8 icon, we hear the start up tune and then it goes black and then BSOD.
I made a recovery USB stick with another computer running Windows 8.1 PRO 64 bit. The problem computer then boots up the USB and we run the repair options and nothing worked.
We went through the command prompt bootrec /fixmbr and associated steps. No go.
We are getting stuck at what to do and are looking at reinstalling. We have a Windows 8.0 license, so Windows 8.1 upgrade is not refreshable or reinstallable at this point. When I went to reinstall Windows 8.0, of course Windows 8.1 is locked.....
I have accidentally changed the Icon for the Picture Viewer on the Start Metro Screen.
I opened a Scan image and by default it used the Picture Program that was bundled on the Start Screen.
Somehow I made the Scan the default new icon, which looks awful. How can I get the Icon back to its original?
