Aug 27, 2012Can folders be placed on the Start Screen? I would like to keep little-used legacy programs and their files as well as little-used Metro programs in folders on the Start Screen.

Windows 8.1 - Folders Icon Disappeared From Start Page
May 29, 2014Somehow, the Folders icon disappeared from my Start screen, without which Windows 8.1 is almost unusable. Now I can't locate any folders and can't see anywhere else to access them.

I know installations will be able to do in-place upgrades using the Windows Store but I've only seen activations regarding complete-wipe upgrades. I'm not particularly worried about activation at this point since I know I'll be able to activate on 8.1...but actually doing the in-place upgrade is what I'm wondering about right now.

Oct 28, 2012I changed my new HP laptop to windows 8 yesterday. love the OS except when i try to type. the cursor moves all over the place, stalls and sometimes even disappear. this didnt happen with windows 7 at all. i know there is a touchpad issue. i have disabled the touchpad (i use a wireless use) and it came back on. i then removed the driver for the touchpad and it still works. i have resorted to downloading a program that "locks" the touchpad when the keyboard is used and none of these have worked. four times while writing this i have had keyboard issues.

Jul 8, 2013I had a version of Windows 8 installed on a secondary hard drive for testing purposes. When I no longer needed it, I uninstalled it and formatted the hard drive. What's odd is that the Bootloader for Windows 8 is still there, and throws up an error screen saying it can't find critical system files.
Ive tried restoring the MBR using my Win7 disc, but to no avail.

Jan 28, 2013I'm wanting to upgrade my laptop to Windows 8. I currently have Ubuntu 12.10 installed alongside Windows 7. I've had a lot of trouble getting ubuntu installed and working (AMD graphics ) so I'd like to just leave that as is.
Is it possible to just install windows 8 over W7 in the same partition? How do I go about doing that? Is it as straight forward as just putting the disk in or is the whole secure boot thing going to cause issues? I want to do a clean install rather than using the upgrade assistant to install Windows 8 over W7.
Setup Installation :: Place A Cloned Drive To Another Identical PC?
Jun 3, 2014I have 2 identical HP i5 desktops running 8.1 which was updated from 8. I want to put a cloned drive from computer A in the other computer B so they will appear identical with all the apps etc. I am told that I will get a configuration error in computer B because the product key in BIOS won't match. Will the computer even run with this error to allow me to fix it? I am told to get a toolkit called the Microsoft toolkit which allows extraction and insertion of keys. I think that approach would let me make computer B product key be the same as A. But in doing this I would lose the valid key in computer B. I would like to change the product key in the cloned drive to be correct for computer B.

Feb 25, 2014I don't know if this is a Windows issue or just an issue with my software but I was using Corel Paint shop pro x6 and I'm not sure what I did but after opening files or using the save to option several times, all of a sudden the window started opening full screen and there doesn't seem to be any way to minimize it.
I tried to see if I could at least drag it some place but it won't move. I tried going to every side and corner to see if I could resize it that way but nothing happens. This is the only program that opens my folders in full screen so perhaps it has nothing to do with Windows but how I can get my folders to open in a small screen where you can move them over or out of the way of something you might be looking at.
Screen Fades In Steps Between Apps / Desktop / Start Screen
Dec 14, 2013I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
Switch To Standard User Account - When Click On Folders Screen Flash To Blank Page
Aug 30, 2013When I use the Administrator Account everything runs well. I switch to Standard User Account and only when I click on my folders the screen flash to a blank page and take me back to the main desktop page. I tried again and the same thing happen always, flashes to a blank page and take me back to the desktop page. It only when I click on my folders.

Twice I've been on the desktop and I never got a low battery warning. To test I made sure I was on the Start screen and sure enough the warning popped up. Also, when I switched over to the desktop the battery icon showed the exclamation point where I don't think it ever did when always on the desktop.

This was pretty much all in the folder c:>Users>Myname, but when I try to transfer it all into the same folder on the new computer, obviously with 100gb there is not enough space.

Mar 18, 2014As I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?
The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. As it turns out, I don't understand the presumed problems. The functionality of Windows 7 is still there. The Start Screen is actually nicer than the Start button

Then open the folder containing your file. Right-click the file's icon and select "Copy." Then right-click in the Start Menu folder and select NOT "Paste," but "Paste Shortcut."
This makes the shortcut look like an "App" to Windows 8, so if you then go to the Metro Search Screen and search for "Apps" it will come up there, and you can right-click it and "Pin to Start."

I have changed the settings to NOT allow hibernation of the computer to include the hard disk drive when not in use; however, the Start Screen after non-use does not want to work, freezes. Nov 1, 2012Playing around with Win 8 and found that it's not easy to pin a file or a web site (if you're not using IE) to the new start screen. Some have suggested downloading a nice little utility that will do the job, but I always try to avoid having a lot of single purpose, rarely used utilities.
Here's a way to accomplish the same task that I discovered by some trial and error.
Go to the desktop. Create a shortcut to an app (firefox if you want to pin a web site, excel if you want to pin a spreadsheet, etc.), giving the shortcut the name of the file or web site you want to pin to the start screen.
Once the shortcut to the app is created, right click on the shortcut, click properties. Go to the target line and add a space, then within quotes add the website or the file you want to access (if a file, add the entire file path and file name).
Click Apply
Right click the shortcut and you will now see the "Pin to Start" option. Click this option.
You can now delete the shortcut on the desktop (unless you want to keep the shortcut on the desktop and the start screen).
Go to the start screen. You will see the new shortcut which executes with a single click or touch.
Examples of a website shortcut Target line and file shortcut Target line are shown below.
"C:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe" "http://www.eightforums.com/"
"C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice12EXCEL.EXE" "C:UsersUserNameDocumentsExcelFileFolderSampleFile.xlsx".
Restart Start Screen Without Logging Off?
Dec 14, 2013Title says it all. You can restart Windows explorer via task manager, but can I do the same with start screen? Because I changed the amount of tile rows on it, but I have to log off.
