There is a square red icon with a white earphone image in it that takes over the screen anytime I play an mp3. I'm a working musician and don't find this charming as I must be hear and go over a score, or two (one in my lap even). How can I turn off this takeover?
View 2 RepliesJust had this new laptop running windows 8 and its an Acer.When I select the photos tile on the screen it goes to another screen which is black with a blue square icon and underneath it tells me that there are no files or folders in this view.There are photos in my picture folder as I just put then in.But if I go to the other method and select the My picture folder the photos are there.
View 7 Replies View Related Recently my pc has taken forever to boot up. A black screen hangs there for about 5-9 minutes before opening up in Windows 8.
I thought a virus was there so did a full scan using Kaspersky Internet Security 2013, nothing found.
I haven't d/l'd any new software recently.
I have tried to upload music to my micro SD card from my iphone, but the icon in My Computer is not showing, not in Device manager either.
Don't know if they are related but the problem started just after the above incident.
I have an ASUS 290X card, and an MSI Z97-Gaming 5 motherboard, and around 8 min into the bf4 game i get a red screen and then i have to press the restart button.
I have a 650 Watt Power Supply, could it be that? I have the Beta Drivers for AMD 14.7 RC3, i used to have 14.4 but same thing occured.
I have a gaming laptop and use it for playing video games. Recently I get blue screen and crashes playing online games like dota 2. I ran many different stress tests and they were all OK. I guess there is something wrong with my mice or audio driver because most of the times I get bluescreen after someone uses his/her mice in the game.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I play videos on youtube, WMP, mplayer or adobe air/flash, video app or whatever, the entire display/screen moves to the left and leaves a black rectangle on the right side of the plasma TV (about one sixth the width of the display). It doesn't happen as soon as I launch the video, but happens when I exit the fullscreen or terminate the app/window and stays that way. The only way to reset it is to log off and log back in or restart the computer.
Mind you, it is not the apps/windows shifting to the left but the entire display, as if some one used the tv settings to move the display area to the left and so left part of the desktop and windows are cut off.
This is getting pretty annoying as keep switching to apps that display text such as VS, Notepad, browser etc in between while playing movies/videos. I can't read what is on the left side of the app window as it is not visible, I need to either resize the window or log out and log back in.
I am using Windows 8 x64 with latest updates and drivers (display and others).
After I play a game, no matter what game it is when I quit it my start screen looks like this.
As you can see I'm in quite a pickle, I want to start editing my start screen but I can't and it has nothing to do with the Start Screen wallpaper change because it was doing this before I even used the start screen customizer.
Is it possible to open the Start Screen (Metro) and / or the charms bar from Icons?
We have lots of servers running Server 2012 and when in a Remote Desktop Window its difficult to try and move the cursor in the 1 pixel corner that brings up the Start Charm...
And Pressing the "Windows" key doesn't get translated so no Win+C ...
So I we could create an icon on the desktop to bring up metro or Charms that would be great!
My win 8 start screen (tiles screen)has an Internet Explorer tile but my desktop mode shows no I.E. icon at all.

My new lenovo K450 constantly crashes with blue screen when playing Dota 2 but have done that also when surfing. Machine came with Windows 8.0 but I updated that for 8.1, all Windows updates have been done and Nvidia Gtx 650 driver has been updated for latest 331.82 driver.

I have accidentally changed the Icon for the Picture Viewer on the Start Metro Screen.
I opened a Scan image and by default it used the Picture Program that was bundled on the Start Screen.
Somehow I made the Scan the default new icon, which looks awful. How can I get the Icon back to its original?
I'm getting confused about the new start button that was supposedly to come with the Win 8.1 update. I cant' find anything different from Win 8. Is the start button the icon found in the lower left corner of the screen?...or on my computer keyboard?...it looks like a window. I was expecting that I would get a dropdown start menu with Win 8.1 like I get with Win 7 when I click on that button. I would really like to have the Win 7 dropdown start menu when I click on that button in 8.1.

Normally, she clicks on the "Mail" icon to get to her email, but now when she clicks on the icon it doesn't go to her email and instead it goes straight to her desktop. I tried clicking another icon; the "weather" one, and it too goes to the desktop. She told me she downloaded a couple games from iWin a few days ago and I noticed a new toolbar in her browser so I tried disabling that, but no change. I've checked what the default browser is, Internet Explorer (what she normally uses). I also tried making Chrome the default browser but still no change.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI notice a short flicker from desktop icons when you press the "win+d" short cut. Sometimes some application windows also flicker when you use this short cut.
I guess the reason is some kind of refresh for the icons, actually it seems to be the same behaviour when you use the context menu on the desktop (right mouse click) and use the command "refresh".
It can easily be seen when you are on the desktop with all it's icons and have a small window open and then press win+d a couple of times. The Icons refresh and therefore flicker. That should be smoothed out.I notice this behaviour in Windows 8, Win7, XP.
This is no problem with a similar command in OSX or Ubuntu.
ALT-TAB is not working when I am playing online games (Crossfire -develop by SmileGate/Neowiz) and Steam-DOTA2. I just experience it when I upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. Is there a workaround on this? I don't want to go back to Windows 7 or 8
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading a Dell XPS One using both Intel HD 4000 and nVidia 640M graphics, the computer takes 5 minutes to restart. The restart screen immediately shows up after hitting the restart button. Then the screen goes black for 5 minutes. Afterwards the Dell logo shows up and everything starts fine from there. I don't understand why the monitor stays black for 5 minutes before restarting.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from Win 8 Pro with Media Center to 8.1 Pro with Media Center. Upgrade went smooth (but what's with going completely thru the install BEFORE asking if you accept the new license?)
But now it takes 15 seconds to open the right click menu on the desktop as opposed to probably less than 1/10 of a second before. All other right clicks seem normal. No significant CPU usage during the wait.
If it matters, I'm pretty damn vanilla but I do have Start8 and ModernMix.
Also if its significant, Catalyst Control Panel won't start (I'll reinstall the latest but it was current less than a week ago).
Also my secondary monitor is set to the correct resolution (1920x1080) but its shrunk with a more than half inch black border around it. I'm hoping the Catalyst/driver reinstall fixes this too.
After a windows update crashed during startup, my laptop is taking 20+ minutes on the "welcome" loading bar after you login. The login screen itself it very laggy and takes 5 minutes to navigate. The "Lenovo" loading screens upon startup takes 3 or 4 minutes.
Occasionally a black screen will appear and I cant get past it in the loading process.
I just got a windows 8.1 laptop, everything works fine except when I try to open files. It takes me more than a minute to load this PC, downloads, or any other folders. I don't really know what to do.

I bought my Dell desktop about 3 years ago. Since then I replaced the HDD with a new Samsung SSD and reinstalled Windows 8 on it. After that it started running really fast.
I usually don't reboot it too often, I do it maybe once a month after installing updates. What I've been noticing lately is that it takes progressively longer to boot this desktop up. I initially thought that the SSD was going bad, so I cloned it 1-to-1 to the original HDD that the desktop came with and that I never used, but the boot time didn't change. I timed it today and it took about 5 minutes to boot up while showing this window:
I have an old laptop from 2007. I bought windows 8 license (was using W7) and it was working great for the few months. After that it stopped. Now if I want to boot it, or restart it or shut it down it takes at least 30 minutes which huge sound coming from it.
I got a new laptop today, but I still want to use my old one. As I think a laptop is a girl, it has to be perfect
It takes 1 minute to enter the windows 8. And 29 minutes to enter the metro layout (it keeps loading).
What do I have to do.
I am currently running Windows 8.1 (Pro), also I am up-to-date with Windows Updates. Sometimes, when I open File Explorer (a.k.a. Windows Explorer), like "This PC". It says "This folder is empty", it then starts some-kind of searching, also icons on the left are animated like "searching". There is another one, it also takes time to sort files/folders orders, for example when I am in C:New Folder and there are 5 folders and 5 files inside, none big sized at all. When I click on "Name" it then takes time to reorder the view.
Another thing is while I experienced these issues, I found another one that is. View>Layout sometimes gets disabled and I can't change the view. View>Options button behaves the same.
Windows 8 which I installed recently (from factory recovery image) suddenly now takes too long to shutdown.
Around 2 minutes and 20 seconds. I tried disabling and enabling "Fast Startup" but that didn't affect the shutdown time.
Also reduced the "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" from 5000ms to 3000ms but also there is no effect.
Also the "ClearPageFileAtShutdown" is set to 0.
I even tried hibernating instead of shutdown and it took 2:20 minutes too !Also disabled hibernate with "powercfg -h off" and tried to shutdown , and took 2:20 minutes too.
When ever it try to open any folder in my computer its shows folder is empty even it has files in it then on task bar green ribbon runs for some time and then it shows files in folder...this wont be happening someday ago but now m getting this problem...hard drive test shows it is working fine

-Restarting the computer takes about 5 mins
-One of my two printers doesn't work
-Internet explorer 11 is constantly freezing, then stopping responding, then quitting and re-starting
I built a very high-spec gaming PC last August and installed Windows 8. I upgraded to 8.1 later and did not experience any problems until I needed to reinstall Windows 8.1 in February in order for USB devices to function properly (restoring or refreshing Windows 8.1 wasn't an option because that function is currently broken (sort it out Microsoft!!))
Since then, a unique problem seems to have developed. My CPU is an Intel-4770k, so when I first boot up the PC from shut down, or when I press the hard restart button on my computer case, the computer boots up very quickly and with no problems. However, when I click 'Restart' from Windows, the interface shuts down, and my PC remains active, but nothing else happens for a good 2 or 3 minutes. After that time, I see two red LEDs on my motherboard flash (I guess that is the PC posting) and the computer starts up.
I am clueless as to why the Restart function has such a massive delay. I followed the steps on one thread which told me to go into msconfig and disable all start-up applications and to do the same in task manager, but after doing so and restarting my PC, the problem persisted. My Dell XPS8700 is like a 16 year old, friendly one minute and totally nuts the next for no reason at all! The computer DOES boot, but there's no beep and well...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to disable my function key abilities completely so games or other apps can use them normally. Windows seem to take over these functions with the stuff like brightness, sound, turn airplane mode on/off.. what i need is a registry hack or something to to fix this. There is a app in control panel that allows you to access some, not all of these functions.. Windows Mobility Center - but still you cannot turn them off at all. I do not need or want any of these features on my function keys.
These are shortcut keys manufactures started putting on keyboards a few years back.. They used to be called Multimedia keyboards - these functions were never standard for a keyboard. I feel like MS has some nerve taking over my function keys like this in a way where i cannot easily turn these off.
