After a windows update crashed during startup, my laptop is taking 20+ minutes on the "welcome" loading bar after you login. The login screen itself it very laggy and takes 5 minutes to navigate. The "Lenovo" loading screens upon startup takes 3 or 4 minutes.
Occasionally a black screen will appear and I cant get past it in the loading process.
Having upgraded to 8.1 yesterday, the problems I have found thus far ae:
-Restarting the computer takes about 5 mins
-One of my two printers doesn't work
-Internet explorer 11 is constantly freezing, then stopping responding, then quitting and re-starting
I have a Dell XPS 8700 Desktop, has 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive, running Windows 8.1 which I had installed the day it came out..the PC I purchased in September 2013..for the past few weeks I have noticed how when I shut down the pc that it can take up to 4 minutes to shut down, the monitor will go black but the power button the tower will remain white til it turns off, it used to turn off in a matter of seconds, now its minutes..same issue for restart, takes about 3 minutes to restart and no one from Dell can figure out what the problem is..all I had installed in December were updates from microsoft thats it, other than that nothing new has been installed. Yesterday I got a notification from Dell on my PC notifying me that I should update my BIOS which was A4 to A6 which I did and still the same issue..talked to five technicians and no one can figure it out, been told maybe its software related and I need to reformat the hard drive, I feel that would be a waste of time, if there was an actual cause I would do it, but to format my hard drive with no known cause of this problem would be stupid, it would just happen again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an old laptop from 2007. I bought windows 8 license (was using W7) and it was working great for the few months. After that it stopped. Now if I want to boot it, or restart it or shut it down it takes at least 30 minutes which huge sound coming from it.
I got a new laptop today, but I still want to use my old one. As I think a laptop is a girl, it has to be perfect
It takes 1 minute to enter the windows 8. And 29 minutes to enter the metro layout (it keeps loading).
What do I have to do.
My computer startup was fine but shutting it down or restart it are extremely slow until it takes nearly 5-10 minutes to do so. Any hint for me to solve this issue?

When my intent is to go to a system restore point, from System Properties and then click on System Restore it takes slightly more than 2 minutes for the Restore dialog window to open. This is from the Desktop which I use almost exclusively.
This is an update from Windows 8, which behaved the same, and has had a repair install to see if that would work. It didn't. I have tried your Shadow copy entries mentioned earlier but with no improvement. I have resorted to a third party program "RestorePointCreator.exe" Which works quickly like Win 7 does.

How to fix Chrome as it is taking an unusually long time to load. It started just today a few hours ago when I logged into Facebook here in my laptop, I normally don't use it in my laptop as I just use it on my phone mainly and have a desktop at school where I submit my school files early to avoid submitting them on my laptop. But when I was forced to submit at home and use Facebook on my laptop to submit my files, Chrome then starts taking a very long time to load, about 10-15 minutes. It isn't an internet problem as were getting a pretty average 7 mbps, and strange thing is IE is working well and fine. Tried doing some research and some suggested it was a firewall issue but I doubt it, as I never tweak my antivirus settings. I tried this When Google Chrome won't start up | Computerworld Blogs but couldn't continue as I seem to be missing the debug.log mentioned and so couldn't make sure if I was having the same problem, so pretty lost at the moment.
After the 15 minute wait for chrome to open, and while I STILL have the browser open, opening new Chrome windows is then back to normal. But soon as I close my Chrome windows I then have to wait lots again. And it seems no matter how many shortcuts I try to open, I remember I clicked Chrome about 20 times it only always opens just 2 Chrome windows

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just got a new Win 8 computer. I love it, however it wakes from sleep mode every 15 minutes on the dot. It will wake for about 2 minutes than sleep again.
Is this something it should do in order to get some air flow every once in a while or can I stop it from doing this? I have searched around online and tried everything i have come across. I turned off the setting that allows programs to wake the computer, as well as made sure the ethernet connection doesn't wake it.
As the title says recently my computer is not getting into sleep state although i've set it at 30 minutes.
Tried a lot of stuff like energy-report from power cfg:

Though i cannot find which device is causing it.

Desktop blinks and all files on desktop dissapear and then load again, and if I am typing words are gone and so is page I was on. You can also hear the disk drive go on and off. It interrupts everything.

If the Defender is activated before than every thing is in red , and unable to start it. The fault code is than 0x80070426.
But as explained already after a few minutes everthing is ok.
Question:
*does this mean that during that time one is not protected?

I have my laptop set up so I don't have to enter a password each time I start it. But I recently changed my password in my Microsoft account by going into Microsoft.com. Now when I start my laptop, it stops half way giving a message that it has an invalid password. At this point, I just enter my new password and it finishes booting up with no problem.
So my question is how do I synchronize the password that my laptop is using to the new changed password in my Microsoft account?
Just as a note, I forgot the password that I had originally set up on my laptop.
When I start my computer startup is slow and then when I get to desktop all the programs that are set to start at startup don't start. I try to launch google chrome and it never starts. For some reason, when I open folders it opens fast. Now here is where it gets weird. It appears that using the force restart button on my PC.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter installing Google Chrome and making it my default browser, I looked on the Start Screen and could not find a Chrome tile. The All Apps screen did have one and when I right clicked it, it indicated that it was on the Start Screen as it had the "Unpin from Start" icon. After trying various methods of getting it to show up, I did unpin it, which also removed it from the All Apps screen of course, then did a search for Chrome, started Chrome and then closed Chrome. When I then tried to go back to the Start Screen to see if there was a Chrome tile, I was greeted by a totally empty screen. I rebooted Win 8 and everything came back normal (I hope) but now with a Chrome tile.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with windows 8, and everytime (or almost everytime, about 4/5 of the times) when I start/restart it, it says that it's configuring windows, please do not shut down your computer. This takes about 20 minutes each time and is really annoying.
Also, I'm not sure this happens all the time, but the first time this happend I just sat by my computer and waited. There I saw that first it was configuring, then when that got to 100%, it said "Configuration failed", then it said "Restarting" and started all over again, but the 2nd time it finished successfully and the computer started.
Since then, I haven't bothered sitting by my laptop and waiting for it while it updates, so I go do something else. So I don't know if that "Configuration failed" thing happens everytime or only that time.
I recently installed Windows 8 64 bit from Windows 7 32 bit. I never had any problems really with the windows 7 32 bit but since upgrading to Windows 8 64 bit I am having this odd problem. I am a gamer, I have Steam with lots of games and so I play one then play another and another then I go to start a game (It isn't the same game) and the computer resets and does its thing. I have made sure all my drivers are up to date as I have heard that that can be the problem.

I closed the laptop, packed it up, and left. When I start it back up, I see a screen with two options: Troubleshoot and Power off your PC. When I click trouble shoot, this is what I see:
Refresh your PC, and Reset your PC, Advanced options.
When I click refresh my PC, it says "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again.
When I click reset, it says, "Unable to reset PC. A required drive partition is missing."

When I click System restore, it says I need to restart the PC, and select an OS and then select system restore, but I have no clue how to do that.
SIR says "The system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002)
Auto Repair says that it cannot fix my PC. No reason why.
Last night my laptop (lenovo z400 ideapad, running windows 8 - i never updated to 8.1) went to a blue screen with a "kernel data inpage error" message. Tried to boot it back up, but once i entered my password and logged in, the screen looked wrong. The windows homepage had no apps and the background pattern was not the one i normally had. I couldn't click on anything, so i shut it back down and went to sleep. This morning, i turned it back on, and this time it looked normal when i logged in. However, after about a minute, it froze and would not unfreeze. Thats where i am now. I can open the computer in safe mode and it works fine, and through that i can access the event viewer and command prompt, etc. I did a disc repair, no luck, and a system restore failed. Like i said, computer only works in safe mode, so i dont know if I'll be able to do the right procedure to upload the dump file from the BSOD, but i can try. Lots of interesting things in the event viewer. I'm on my phone but i can sample them later.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a serious problem with my computer i got a virus that deselected my graphics card and wouldn't allow me to go in bios so i thought that a factory restore would do it, unfortunately i was wrong. It turned off the computer and when i try to start it it just goes to a black screen for about an hour then goes to like some kind of power save mode where the power button is flashing and i tried to turn it on again and the same thing happened. My screen works just fine but it says it dosen't get any input so my computer just isn't displaying anything. I am really scared and don't know what to do?

Also my Canon G16 WiFi camera can connect to all my Win 7 systems but not to my Windows 8.1 the camera is not found. Windows 8.1 has been a real bummer. Just glad I still have other computers running Win7.

So I bought a new one, hooked up all the plugs, well not all.
Computer works again, but my hdmi cable stopped working on my tv. I tried hooking up my monitor (which normally runs on dvi) but that also didn't work.
Is it possible i forgot a plug?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently re installed Windows 8 then upgraded to Windows 8.1 because I was having BSOD. Now on the fresh install, which is 4 days or so old, my computer BSOD on start up like before.
My guess hardware failure or Norton....
I am getting BSOD most of the time when my computer starts up, also a few times when I'm browsing websites. The first few times it happened I did not notice the file name that causes it.
The files that I noticed which causes the BSOD:
DPC_WATCHDOG_VOLIATION
MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS
What I did that causes this mentioned file to prompt BSOD. I have attached a zip file achieved by the diagnostic tool from this website as told.
While trying to add folders to the Search Index, I was informed the Windows Search process was not started. When I go to the Services Console and attempt to manually start, I am given the error:
"Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer.
Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."
So I opened an command prompt with administrative level access to run sfc and received the following error after it was complete:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios."

What other way, aside from a repair install, do I have to fix my missing files and services?

After upgrading a Dell XPS One using both Intel HD 4000 and nVidia 640M graphics, the computer takes 5 minutes to restart. The restart screen immediately shows up after hitting the restart button. Then the screen goes black for 5 minutes. Afterwards the Dell logo shows up and everything starts fine from there. I don't understand why the monitor stays black for 5 minutes before restarting.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from Win 8 Pro with Media Center to 8.1 Pro with Media Center. Upgrade went smooth (but what's with going completely thru the install BEFORE asking if you accept the new license?)
But now it takes 15 seconds to open the right click menu on the desktop as opposed to probably less than 1/10 of a second before. All other right clicks seem normal. No significant CPU usage during the wait.
If it matters, I'm pretty damn vanilla but I do have Start8 and ModernMix.
Also if its significant, Catalyst Control Panel won't start (I'll reinstall the latest but it was current less than a week ago).
Also my secondary monitor is set to the correct resolution (1920x1080) but its shrunk with a more than half inch black border around it. I'm hoping the Catalyst/driver reinstall fixes this too.
