View 9 Replies View RelatedSome time ago, it is possible, in msconfig.exe you could Expand file and select .cab, then, you could save as .msu wherever you want.
Right now, with Windows 8.1, there is anyway to build .msu from .cab update?
After updating to windows 8.1 I noticed that the pin icon is missing. another way to pin a web site to the metro screen other than using that Icon
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Office 2013 two weeks ago. The setup automatically pinned Office apps on my start menu. But after couple of days, the icons from some of the office apps automatically got erased from the tiles and now it looks so ugly. I tried re-pinning apps on start menu but it didn't work. I also tried sfc /scannow but it was in vein. How to fix it and get the icons back on the tiles?
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I noticed the Start button's Windows icon is missing in my metro mode. I'm not exactly sure what it's called, but it's the multitask pane on the left side of the screen that appears when you hover over the top left corner and slide down. Rather than a Windows icon it now assumes the Accent color in PC settings.
I have some modding software installed, such as UxStyle, Aero Glass for Windows 8, and a custom theme, although this issue existed without these installed.
how to get it back. Attached are two pics, one default and one on hover.
(My keyboard has no Print Screen button and Snipping tool doesn't seem to work in Metro)
I'm a new Win 8.1 user trying to setup a more normal looking desktop on my wife's new laptop.
In an attempt to populate the desktop toolbar with apps on the start page, I found it can't be done as explained in the tutorial. Either when I touch/hold the app icon, or right mouse click, the app is checked and the bottom application bar appears. However, on the app bar my only choices are: "Unpin from Start", "Uninstall", or "Find in Start". I'm not given the option of "Pin to taskbar". I also don't see the choices: "Open new window", "Run as admin", or "Open file location" that I see in an example under that tutorial.
I'm running this account in admin mode. The most recent Windows update was 5/2014, with no new updates available when checked today. Is there something wrong or a control panel setting I need to enable to see the other choices?
I have a Toshiba laptop running Win 8.1. Things were fine when I shut down lsst night. Now I have no task bar, now way to get to my programs and the classic icon is gone so I cannot turn it off. Also I cannot open Win 8 start page and the symbols do not appear on the left hand side.
View 1 Replies View RelatedBecause I don't have Windows Updates set to install automatically I get the message to open Windows Update and install new updates every day, sometimes several times a day.
Getting to Windows Update is more round about in Windows 8 than is was in 7, which had a button on the start menu.
Today I created a link and put it on my taskbar.

I have a new desktop. A dell Precision T7610 with win 8.1 pro x64. I installed APC Powerchute personal edition last weekend. Went out of town and last night came home and noticed I had no power icon on the task bar. I am not sure if this started right away or not. I do like to change the power plan from balanced to high power depending on what I am doing. I can do through control panel, but I figure I should fix why I do not have the icon on the task bar now.
I tired uninstalling powerchute and it failed. I then re-installed and installed. Now power icon.
In the task bar, customize icons, and then turn systems icons on and off, the power icon is set to off but I cannot set it to on. Under customize icons, if I try to set to show icons, it says it is not active.
unfortunately I do not have a restore point before last night. Not sure if I never had any (new machine) or if some how they got deleted.
I wanna update my pc but the windows 8 update icon wont even open when i click on it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedVersion: 8.1, 8.1.1 ... When updates from windows-updated are installed (which requires reboot), the "Restart now" button appears after installation. However, I decided not to restart at that time. After completing my job I shutdown by right click on start icon -> Shutdown or sign out -> Shutdown. I started my laptop the next day and checked for updates, I still see the same page where "Restart now" option is shown. With this, you cannot further check for updates.
The shutdown from start-icon is not recognized as "restart". I also checked the update history. The updates installed the other day were shown as "Pending restart".
This is happening for quite sometime. Technically shutdown and start is to be considered as restart. When shutdown from start-icon is selected, what exactly happens? Is it not shutting the PC completely?
Usually, Windows 8.1 advanced startup options -> troubleshoot menu should be .....
But my troubleshoot->advanced options only have UEFI Firmware and Startup Settings ....
I have to use command prompt ....
I downloaded a ps2 emulator and when I go to update my diretcx I get the cabinet file missing and the certificate is invalid.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI notice a short flicker from desktop icons when you press the "win+d" short cut. Sometimes some application windows also flicker when you use this short cut.
I guess the reason is some kind of refresh for the icons, actually it seems to be the same behaviour when you use the context menu on the desktop (right mouse click) and use the command "refresh".
It can easily be seen when you are on the desktop with all it's icons and have a small window open and then press win+d a couple of times. The Icons refresh and therefore flicker. That should be smoothed out.I notice this behaviour in Windows 8, Win7, XP.
This is no problem with a similar command in OSX or Ubuntu.
I am considering using Windows 8 on a new HTPC build.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have done a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro Build 9600 using a genuine MSDN ISO.
After the installation was complete i did all the updates and after that i decided to activate.
The activation was a success and the watermark disappeared but after a restart it came back on my desktop.
If in CMD i type "slmgr/xpr" it says widows is permanent activated so how come the watermark is still there?
I just wanted to know the build number of Windows 8 Retail. I mean the one that released Oct 26th.
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion"
I just upgraded my legal copy of Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. I've also installed all the currently available updates. The problem I'm faced now is the watermark on my wallpaper near the clock (Bottom-right side of the desktop). It currently says: "Windows 8.1 SecureBoot isn't configured corrently Build 9600" .
I have to admit, I have disabled secure boot. I don't know if I'm allowed to talk about this in these forums, but let's just say I have another OS installed an my PC (I use GRUB to load the two Operating Systems)...
I built a new computer for my girlfriend, which of course ran fine at my house for 4 days, and even passed 12 hours of prime95. She lives over an hour away, and since I left a few days ago, she has had multiple problems with BSOD's. It seems to occur far more often when powering the computer on, and then it often takes multiple attempts to get the pc running - but once it is running, it seems to be somewhat stable. It seems to be somewhat random whether it will power up normally.
Some basic hardware info:
Intel Pentium G3258 with stock cooler running at stock speed (3.2)
Corsair XMS 2x4GB DDR3 1333
Gigabyte GA-H81M-DS2V motherboard
Hanns-G HT231DPBU Touchscreen monitor
Plextor M6S SATA3 (6Gb/s) solid state
Corsair CX430M PSU
I am not sitting at the PC now, but I did manage to get her to send me the minidumps. However, I am not able to figure out what the error is, or even how to start looking for it. I have 6 minidumps, mostly different days, with 6 different errors. I am attaching the minidumps here. I've run them through online crash analyzers, and can't find a pattern.
When waking my computer from sleep it takes 8 seconds for the screen to come on, then nothing responds for another 25 seconds. I fixed all the errors in event manager, updated the bios, installed all the newest drivers, changed BIOS settings. All to no avail.
All the components (except the MB and CPU) were recycled from my last motherboard which would be ready to go immediately from sleep. My previous build (which ran great) was also Windows 8.1 but the motherboard died. I have no password. The lock screen is disabled. Disabled suspend, and shut off hybrid sleep.
Why the lag? Is there any way to find out what's slowing me down?

I have made a video to show all the features that are new to Windows 8.1 (Blue). This is the latest build that has been leaked recently. It brings some nice features like an improvement to the Snap-View and a feature called "Kiosk-mode". Everything is explained in the video. if I sometimes forget the words and things are hard to understand, because obviously English isn't my first language.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHow can I remove the Windows 8.1 Enterprise Watermark on my laptop?
On the right bottom side this is what Windows 8.1 says.
"Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation Windows License Valid for 90 days Build 9600"
I run Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64 bits.
I have attempted to create a Windows 8.1 with Media Center x64 but having no luck. I have tried various WIM's and keep running into problems. Any success creating one?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a new laptop and am trying to work out the kinks
Its a new Windows 8.1 build. But seems to be causing all kinds of problems. And honestly i'm not sure where to start trying to fix it. I think its driver related but have tried updating a few drivers with varying success (as even this has led to some BSODs)
I keep getting BSODs after building a new PC and installing Win 8. The error I am getting from my Intel event log says: 2000 Error communicating with WLAN device.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the WLAN drivers but am not having any luck. I have found newer driver versions but none of the driver installs take now. Seems like the driver that was installed is now corrupt, or parts of it are lingering. When I uninstall the device and driver from Windows (cause I don't need it), Windows finds it when auto scanning for hardware and then I get another BSOD.
The ethernet device that seems to be having the issue is a Killer e2200 built into my MSi Gaming 5 Motherboard.
Any method to remove "Activate Windows" and "Build Number" watermarks from 8.1 Ent. ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy first build and am having problems with windows booting extremely slow, running buggy and shutting down on me randomly. It typically shuts down during strenuous tasks such as gaming and installation, but has shut down in the UEFI bios, once. When I boot back up I almost always get to the sign in menu but after putting in my password it takes a good 3-5 minutes before the start menu pops up. Sometimes it'll load up to a black screen where I can only use the mouse pointer, and access the task manager. Wondering if it's my motherboard or if it's just a driver problem. Running an ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 with an AMD 8350 black and an Sapphire 7870 XT with two sticks of cheap 4 GB 1333 MHz ram.
