Attempting Repairs Message After Windows 8.1 Update
Apr 11, 2014
I have a Toshiba Encore, which I updated. When I start it up it has the message 'Preparing Automatic repair', then a black screen and a Windows windows flashes up for a split second. I then get the message 'Diagnosing your PC', the 'Attempting Repairs'.
I then get a blue screen with the title 'Automatic Repair' with the message: Automatic Repair couldnt repair your PC...... Log file C:windowssystem32logfilessrtsrttrail.txt
There are two options 'Shutdown' and 'Advanced options'.
'Advanced options' gives:
Continue'- exit to windows 8.1
'Use a device'
'Troubleshoot'
'Turn off your PC'
Troubleshoot gives:
'Refresh your PC'
'Reset your PC'
'Toshiba maintenece'
'Advanced Options'
Advanced Options gives:
'System restore'- ive tried this but there are no restore points
'System image recovery'
'Start up repair'- Tried this, just goes to 'Preparing automatic repair'
'Command prompt'- This works
'UEFI Firmware Settings'
'Start-up Settings'- Tried this, just goes to 'Preparing automatic repair'
So apart from refreshing and resetting which I haven't tried yet, I can get into a Command prompt. The command prompt starts in X:. When I open Notepad and browse the file system i notice that X: is called 'Boot'. I'm wondering whether the 8.1 update has put something on my PC that makes it try to boot from X: instead of C:. Is there any way I can check what drive the PC is trying to boot from?
The log file states
Root cause found: Boot manager failed to find OS loader
Repair action: File repair
Result:failed. Error code 0xa
Repair action: Boot configuratio data store repair
Result:failed. Error code 0x490

I have a Toshiba laptop, it's less then a year old and came with Windows 8 pre-installed, so i don't have a disc. Last night i was watching a movie on it when it froze up, i had no choice but to force reboot as it was unresponsive but when it rebooted it when straight to diagnosing and attempting repairs! I left it over night to allow it to repair but it never made it past that screen.
It's less then a year old and it hadn't had a single issue up until last night? I've tried rebooting to watch for options watch for booting options but it doesn't give me any choices at all just goes straight to Diagnosing and attempting repairs!

So I my computer was really lagging one day so I restarted it like always. I turned it on, and it just has an infinite loop saying "Attempting repairs" and "Diagnosing your PC." I did get this one screen where it said "We need to restart your pc, click OK or click Advanced settings." I went to YouTube and I did what it said. It worked for every one else BUT me. I don't remember what I did but it didn't work. Now it's stuck at this loop of death. How to wipe it because I don't have anything on there I NEED.

Am I able to use the Applocker to prevent this from occurring? I can sadly not give a screeny of this... because if the message appears, there seems to be no way to get rid of it, but making a new local account?

I got a message on my new laptop that Windows was updating and would take 2 days. This was on Friday.
I went back to it yesterday (Sunday), and it says it will restart today.
I've been periodically checking it and I'm still getting the same message.
Is this normal? Can I override it somehow and get into my laptop??

Alright, so I was in another OS, and decided to copy over some files. The problem is when I got into Windows it gave me disk errors. So I allowed Windows to repair them automatically, and everything was dandy. But the files that were transferred are nowhere to be seen on both Operating Systems, but the disk space is still being taken up (About 100GB) so how on earth do I get rid of this phantom space?

I have 2 accounts on this PC, one is a MS account, the other is the built-in Administrator account, which I renamed and assigned a complex password to make it difficult for anyone to get into. However, I recently disabled the Admin account with the "net user administrator /active:no" command, and then deleted both the Administrator and Enigma (the name which I renamed it to) folders in C:Users. I also went into Control Panel and made sure that the user is gone, it does not appear now. I can still log into my PC via the MS account since it has admin rights.
But after rebooting the Admin/Enigma account still appears on the login screen and asks for a password. So I reenter the old password and it then hangs with a "Preparing Windows" message. Then I do a hard reset and log into the MS account, I can see that a TEMP folder has been created at C:Users, which I assume was created as a result of trying to log in as Admin/Enigma. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that the PC still remembers the password and other info associated with the account, and that info must still be stored somewhere in the Registry. That seems to be the only logical cause of the issue.
So, I need locating that info and resetting it, because I intend to reactivate Admin again, but this time I'm going to leave it alone. I had deleted it in the 1st place because of the appearance of 2 usernames for the account at C:Users, and found that odd, so I figured I could get rid of both and then recreate/reset. I rarely use the account anyways because it is a security risk, and only to do a handful of things that I've had trouble doing with the MS account, despite it having admin privilidges.

I purchased a Inspiron 17 7737 directly from [URL] on 12/5/2013. It was delivered on 12/182013. It had Windows 8 as the operating system. I had assumed that it would have the latest version of Windows when it arrived since 8.1 had been issued in October. I opened the Store app and the upgrade to Windows 8.1 was not available to me. I understood that this was a problem for others and did not pursue it further at that time. I was out of town for 2 weeks in January and did not use the laptop during that 2 week period. When I returned, I opened the Store and found prominently placed the invitation to the free upgrade to 8.1. I was signed in using the Administrator account and when I hit the download button for 8.1. I was given the message "You need to use an account with Administrator privileges to install Windows 8.1, try logging in with the user account of an administrator of this PC and try update again".
I verified that my account had Administrator privileges and tried again and got the same message. I created another user account and gave it administrator privileges and tried the download again signed in on that account and got the same message. I called technical support and for over 5 hours over 2 different days, the technician attempted to resolve the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling Windows updates. When that failed to resolve the problem, he "refreshed" my PC which, I understood put it back to the status it was in at time of delivery. He then had to do all the Windows updates (approximately 65) and tried to download 8.1 again.
This did not change the error message when trying to download to 8.1. At that point, I was told that they were elevating it to a technical team who would research all the logs from my machine and come up with a solution. They indicated that they would call me back when a solution is found. Although my Administrator account was not recognized when attempting to do the 8.1 download, it recognized the Administrator role when the technician needed administrative approval to do all the uninstall and reinstall activities when trying to resolve the issue.

I am getting access denied when attempting to get into a folder. Just recently installed Windows8. I had the same issue with win7, but I managed to resolve it. What do I need to do to get around this? I don't remember ever having had a problem with simply getting into one of my own folders.

This happened when I attempted to back up all my Steam Games into one file. It crashed and now I'm stuck iwth a Folder within a Folder which as a really long name (basically about 50 names) I cannot delete the file. It's advising me to rename it which I've tired but fail miserably. I attempted to use CMD like this:
C:UsersName>DEL "?ESteam Backup Games"
?ESteam Backup Games*, Are you sure (Y/N) Y
Nothing happens.. the folder is still there.
I'm pretty much stuck and I cannot remove this folder.
I also created another similar to this but the Folders are empty and the name of both the folders is called "Steam BackUp Games 2" yet i can't shift+del it...

I transferred many music files from a backup drive onto a new laptop running Windows 8, and found most renamed as numbered files with a .ptl extension. Found out that my backup drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex) doesn't like long filenames and renames them as referenced above. ("ptl" stands for "path too long"). I have been renaming them, dumping the ptl extension to get the files back as mp3's, but I get a confirmation window that I have to click "yes" to for each and every change I attempt. I'd love to kill the confirm popup for every file I change, it doubles the time involved for each file and I have enough work just renaming the files back to their original names. I've looked all over the control panel for something to uncheck to accomplish this, with no success.

For the past week or so, I am suddenly (in the middle of working on something) getting a blue screen that says "Activate Windows. Go to PC Settings to activate Windows." And there's a PC settings button to click. The only way out of that screen is to click there. So I do, and it briefly looks like I'm going to go to some sort of settings screen, but then it disappears and it takes me to my start screen. When I go back to my desktop, whatever I was working on is right where I left it. Happens several times a day.
Why this is happening and why it never actually takes me to PC Settings and what I can do to stop this?
I'm running 8.1 - I "upgraded" (I use that term loosely!) when it first became available back in October.

I've started getting the Upgrade to Windows 8.1 now - it's free message when I boot up and it's annoying as heck. It locks up the computer and the only choice is to click the upgrade now button. I was able to Ctrl+Alt+Del and sign out then login again. Got the same annoying message but this time there was a Remind me later button. Is there any way to block it or prevent it from happening? I don't want to upgrade to 8.1 now and perhaps maybe never. This is as bad as a virus.

I am using Windows 8 pro, and recently it comes up with a big "Upgrade to Windows 8.1" banner at login, with a link to the store, and you can't close the banner either, so you have to go to the store.
Is there a way to disable this?
I've tried 8.1 and I don't want to move on yet until the 8.1 drivers are properly released for my laptop... had issues with 8.1 the last couple of time I tried it.

Using Livemail in Windows 8.1 for no apparent reason the content of all messages in one or more storage folders will disappear. The message header is OK, but the contents of all messages in that particular folder are identical. It seems to occur only when I drag a new message from the inbox or sent box into the storage folder. And not every time.
I have tried restores the message contents. Clearly the WLM storage file is messed up - is there any way to restore or recover it?

Windows 8 Pro, latest updates.
Strange error message in last couple days on startup, sometimes at other times.
Explorer.exe (in title bar of message)
In message section-yellow triangle with exclamation point, followed by "Windows can't find the target".
What target?
Explorer is working, as I can open a folder, etc.
I tried SFC /scannow, and it reported no problems.
A Google search of the term found no hits.

I purchased a new laptop last week: Lenovo G500.it has Windows 8 pre-installed.at present i am still using the pre-installed McAfee Internet security programme for my AV;i have successfully done all updates(which are set to automatic)
However-despite 5 attempts to free upgrade to 8.1 i am still getting the Error Code 0x80072ee2 message and installation fails. on checking this out i am finding 'fixes' but these require installation of 'repair tool' type applications(only operable if bought etc).
