Maintenance :: Windows 8 Stuck On Attempting Repairs Screen?
Jul 31, 2013
I have a Toshiba laptop, it's less then a year old and came with Windows 8 pre-installed, so i don't have a disc. Last night i was watching a movie on it when it froze up, i had no choice but to force reboot as it was unresponsive but when it rebooted it when straight to diagnosing and attempting repairs! I left it over night to allow it to repair but it never made it past that screen.
It's less then a year old and it hadn't had a single issue up until last night? I've tried rebooting to watch for options watch for booting options but it doesn't give me any choices at all just goes straight to Diagnosing and attempting repairs!

I have a Toshiba Encore, which I updated. When I start it up it has the message 'Preparing Automatic repair', then a black screen and a Windows windows flashes up for a split second. I then get the message 'Diagnosing your PC', the 'Attempting Repairs'.
I then get a blue screen with the title 'Automatic Repair' with the message: Automatic Repair couldnt repair your PC...... Log file C:windowssystem32logfilessrtsrttrail.txt
There are two options 'Shutdown' and 'Advanced options'.
'Advanced options' gives:
Continue'- exit to windows 8.1
'Use a device'
'Troubleshoot'
'Turn off your PC'
Troubleshoot gives:
'Refresh your PC'
'Reset your PC'
'Toshiba maintenece'
'Advanced Options'
Advanced Options gives:
'System restore'- ive tried this but there are no restore points
'System image recovery'
'Start up repair'- Tried this, just goes to 'Preparing automatic repair'
'Command prompt'- This works
'UEFI Firmware Settings'
'Start-up Settings'- Tried this, just goes to 'Preparing automatic repair'
So apart from refreshing and resetting which I haven't tried yet, I can get into a Command prompt. The command prompt starts in X:. When I open Notepad and browse the file system i notice that X: is called 'Boot'. I'm wondering whether the 8.1 update has put something on my PC that makes it try to boot from X: instead of C:. Is there any way I can check what drive the PC is trying to boot from?
The log file states
Root cause found: Boot manager failed to find OS loader
Repair action: File repair
Result:failed. Error code 0xa
Repair action: Boot configuratio data store repair
Result:failed. Error code 0x490

So I my computer was really lagging one day so I restarted it like always. I turned it on, and it just has an infinite loop saying "Attempting repairs" and "Diagnosing your PC." I did get this one screen where it said "We need to restart your pc, click OK or click Advanced settings." I went to YouTube and I did what it said. It worked for every one else BUT me. I don't remember what I did but it didn't work. Now it's stuck at this loop of death. How to wipe it because I don't have anything on there I NEED.

I have 2 accounts on this PC, one is a MS account, the other is the built-in Administrator account, which I renamed and assigned a complex password to make it difficult for anyone to get into. However, I recently disabled the Admin account with the "net user administrator /active:no" command, and then deleted both the Administrator and Enigma (the name which I renamed it to) folders in C:Users. I also went into Control Panel and made sure that the user is gone, it does not appear now. I can still log into my PC via the MS account since it has admin rights.
But after rebooting the Admin/Enigma account still appears on the login screen and asks for a password. So I reenter the old password and it then hangs with a "Preparing Windows" message. Then I do a hard reset and log into the MS account, I can see that a TEMP folder has been created at C:Users, which I assume was created as a result of trying to log in as Admin/Enigma. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that the PC still remembers the password and other info associated with the account, and that info must still be stored somewhere in the Registry. That seems to be the only logical cause of the issue.
So, I need locating that info and resetting it, because I intend to reactivate Admin again, but this time I'm going to leave it alone. I had deleted it in the 1st place because of the appearance of 2 usernames for the account at C:Users, and found that odd, so I figured I could get rid of both and then recreate/reset. I rarely use the account anyways because it is a security risk, and only to do a handful of things that I've had trouble doing with the MS account, despite it having admin privilidges.

I transferred many music files from a backup drive onto a new laptop running Windows 8, and found most renamed as numbered files with a .ptl extension. Found out that my backup drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex) doesn't like long filenames and renames them as referenced above. ("ptl" stands for "path too long"). I have been renaming them, dumping the ptl extension to get the files back as mp3's, but I get a confirmation window that I have to click "yes" to for each and every change I attempt. I'd love to kill the confirm popup for every file I change, it doubles the time involved for each file and I have enough work just renaming the files back to their original names. I've looked all over the control panel for something to uncheck to accomplish this, with no success.

My laptop has two users, once called work and one called gaming, and when i tried to log into work yesterday, the welcome screen with the spinning dots just kept going. the only way to stop it was to power off and reboot. at first i thought there was something wrong with it, but i tried logging into my other user (gaming) and it worked perfectly fine. i can even access the files in the work user from the gaming user.

I was casually using my pc and it suddenly shutdown. I tried to restart it, but it's stuck on black screen. Here's the thing there was no windows logo or no bios or no nothing appeared on the screen. It just goes black even if I restart it a hundred times. I am sure the cables of the monitor are fine and I am also sure that there are signals coming from the pc.
P. S. I even ASSUMED that the pc must have switched on and typed password to login and waited enough to get it to sleep mode and then recover from there. But still no luck.

I only installed the following: killer enthernet driver and google chrome (also nobodies graphics driver)I reset my computer and it goes through the logo then goes into a blank blue screen where I can move my cursor. What I've tried: I can log into safe mode. Right now I am resetting the PC (file wipe). I can't seem to attach an image on mobile.

Alright, so I was in another OS, and decided to copy over some files. The problem is when I got into Windows it gave me disk errors. So I allowed Windows to repair them automatically, and everything was dandy. But the files that were transferred are nowhere to be seen on both Operating Systems, but the disk space is still being taken up (About 100GB) so how on earth do I get rid of this phantom space?

To my own stupidity I decided to update my computer from Windows 8 to 8.1, every thing would be fine if not for the fact that my screen is now stuck as a letterbox.
The native for my monitor is 1920-1080 and was what I was running at pre-update, after restarting, my screen is confined to a letterbox setting. Changing the resolution does nothing, when looking for a solution I came across a post from this thread:
8.1 upgrade - generic video driver problem
I've got the same graphics card as the OP and have found the same events. My question is what did he mean when he said
"I deleted the AMD leaf-item (Control Panel, Display adapters, AMD Radeon HD 7650D)and rebooted the system." in post 3.
Did he go ahead and un-install it? Clarification on what he exactly done would be great.
btw, if I did go ahead and un-install my graphics card like the OP originally suggested, would it reinstall on restart?

I have an Asus laptop running on Windows 8 that starts up to the initial Asus logo for a minute and then restarts over and over. I've already tried pressing f8 and it does nothing so I cannot get anywhere to attempt to fix the problem.
Unfortunately I do not have the Windows disk so I'm looking for a solution outside of having to buy another one and wiping the hard drive to reinstall.

A couple days ago, I was casually playing Warframe. Tried to alt+tab out to check an IM and my screen went black. Not sure what happened as I could still hear the mouseover sounds as though Warframe were still active. Fiddled around for a few minutes and couldn't get Task Manager to come up, so I decided to just hold the power button on my laptop until it shut down. No harm done, right?
When I booted back up, Windows greeted me with a "Diagnosing Your PC" message under the normal Toshiba boot logo. After it hung there for a few seconds, it moved on to the "Attempting Repairs" screen. Didn't take long for it to decide it wasn't too happy with me for suddenly shutting it down.
Since then, I've been stuck in an auto repair loop. So far I've googled everything I could think of, but it seems my efforts were in vain. Tried putting Hiren's on a thumbdrive and booting from there, and for some reason, Windows just boots right back into the auto repair screen. I've even wiped my 1TB external and put the recovery image from my work PC on there. That didn't work either. I've gone through every thread google's given me and I feel like I'm banging my head against the wall.
I should probably note that formatting is not an option for me. I'd try installing Ubuntu on my external, but since the recovery won't even boot, I feel like that'd be in vain.

Laptop Information- HP 2000 Notebook PC
Well, yesterday night, everything was going good until I tried to download League Of Legends on my laptop. I was multi-tasking on facebook, youtube, and a whole other stuff while my laptop was downloading League Of Legends, and then the whole laptop frooze and then I panicked and pressed the power button a couple times. When the laptop booted back up, it was all black and nothing happened.
I was searching online and pressed the F11 button to try and restore the laptop and it did work and I also got into windows 8. It was lagging and very slow when I booted into windows 8, and so I just decided to shutdown the laptop and try to refresh and reset the laptop from boot.
However the automatic recovery didn't work and couldn't repair the laptop. When I was refreshing and reseting the laptop, it wouldn't finish all the way, because it would stop at like 60% and then just stop and freeze. Now, I think I messed up a bit and now I can't boot into Windows 8 or even RESET,RESTORE,or REFRESH. Also I just dod a diagnostic check on UEFI, and my Hard Disk Short DST has failed, so I think that I need to replace my hard disk.
RIGHT NOW, MY LAPTOP BOOTS THIS SCREEN DOWN HERE
RECOVERY
Your PC needs to be repaired
The operating system couldn't be loaded because the system registry file is missing or contains errors.
File: Windowssystem32configsystem
Error code: 0xc000000f
You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media(like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer
Press Enter to try again
Press F8 for Startup Settings
Press ESC for UEFI Firmware Settings
Press F9 to use a different operating system
All these options won't work because it will just loop back to this screen that I just showed you.

I have a problem in my dual boot machine. I decided to remove Linux mint 17 from my dual boot with windows 8.
I used easeus partition manager to delete the partitions associated (root, home and swap). Then I got unallocated space just before my windows partition. So I moved my windows partition to the extreme left possible. Then I merged this unallocated space with my second storage partition.
These steps required reboot (specifically the moving of windows partition). When I rebooted my PC I got an error that grub was not found. I realized that I had forgot to fix MBR and load windows boot loader. So I used windows 7 recovery disk (yes windows 7 as I don't have windows8 recovery or installation disk). I got a windows 7 style boot loader instead of windows 8's graphical one which has advanced recovery options built in. But I proceeded. Then eases did its job with the partitions. After a reboot now I am stuck at a black screen after entering my password with a movable mose cursor. I can only press Ctrl+alt+del. Selecting task manager from it does nothing.
Since I don't have windows 8 disks and windows 8 boot loader I am not able to refresh or reset my PC. Neither can I shift restart my PC to get advanced boot options. One more thing to note, that while entering password, I noticed that the lock screen and account pictures have changed to defaults of a freshly installed windows.

Black screen on windows 8.1 . Here's the situation:
- I have windows 8.1 for some weeks. every thing works fine
- today after going to sleep mode I can not start windows. it goes to a black screen after windows logo and restarts won't work.
- Tried the 'fixmbr' thing on command prompt from windows startup repair.
- Windows startup repair obviously finds nothing
- tried refreshing pc from startup repair but after a few minutes it said that it has failed refreshing
- Tried forcing windows to go to "safe mode" by using command prompt but the same thing
Any solution except formatting and reinstalling windows? My laptop is a custom CLEVO p150hm1.

While I was on windwos 8, I didn't have any problems!

When my computer restarts, it seems to never end. I once waited 20 minutes for it to restart but it was still at the same screen. Now whenever it goes into restart, I just hold my power button until it shuts down. I don't think it's good for my laptop so I want to figure out a way to have a fast restart. I got this laptop 3 weeks ago and it always had this problem. My old laptop restarts in under 2 minutes.

My problem is that no matter how hard I try I can't get more than 4 rows on my start page
I have installed Windows 8 on a PC with the following hardware:
nVidia graphics card and latest drivers.
A Dell 27" monitor running at 1920x1200
A secondary DVI to HDMI cable to a 54" Samsung TV (1920x1080) - used for Media Center
I have googled the web in vain and tried many solutions which involve changing registry keys or specifying the MonitorSize. I have also tried the Decor8 app but it limits me to 4 rows.
I have tried unplugging the TV and rebooted but this didn't work.
About the only interesting thing I can find is that if in my display settings I switch to 1080p I only get 3 rows, and if at 1200p I switch to portrait mode I then get more rows - but obviously this isn't particularly useful since my monitor can't pivot.
By comparison I have a VM at work running Windows 8 at 1920x1080 and it happily displays 6 rows - go figure.
