When I power up my HP Envy laptop with Windows 8 I'm asked to "Choose your keyboard layout" every time. Is there a way to stop this happening? Control Panel set for English (US).

From time to time I noticed there is installed a US keyboard, I am UK based and any setup keyboard/date etc are in UK format. Also when I installed the windows I selected (autodetected) the UK settings.
Also, I noticed that the US keyboard does not exist on the layouts (I am using Greek and UK), so in order to get rid of this, I have to add and the remove the US keyboard, but after a while re-appears!
Started using my freshly installed Windows 8.1 Pro this week...When i go to a file (any filetype...i tried like 10..) and click "choose default program..." in the context menu, the following error message will always come up:
Sure i can go to Config panel > Select default programs etc.But this is odd... since i am 100% confident it used to work fine before.I already did a 'sfc /scannow' checkup with an original 8.1 Pro x64 image but it says integrity is completely fine.
Could it be a random piece of software i uninstalled which was perhaps freeware and did not state it was Windows 8 compatible, leaving a cluttered registry key which is affecting this command from my context menu?
How do I change the keyboard layout to UK layout? I have to use " key for @ and vice versa at the moment.

First, i used windows 8 and had no problems, my keyboard layout was the correct one (Spanish - Latin America, 'cause i'm from Argentina). But after an upgrade to windows 8.1, the default layout was set to Traditional Spanish wich does not suit the layout I see on my keyboard, signs are misplaced. I went to the control panel and under the idioms settings i set Latin American layout to my keyboard, but even with the correct configuration (checked with the layout image that is shown in the configuration menu), signs like ` and @ are still misplaced. What can I do?

Now I've got a redundant keyboard entry that I can't get rid of.
(Running Windows 8.1 Enterprise RTM - TechNet x-64). Note you can only add language packs etc for PRO and above versions.
Is there a way to switch to a different keyboard language for as long as a key/combo modifier is pressed? I only need like 4 letters from another layout.
You can imagine how often I have to switch back and forth so I'd like a key just like shift, using another character on the same key.
I just noticed that my keyboard layout appears to be incorrect, and have been unable to resolve it after some googling around. The keyboard layout of my laptop is the UK English, but even with this setting in the language settings of windows I still am stuck using the US English version, so for example my @ and " are swapped around, and where the pound sign is.
I've tried downloading new language packs, and switching to the US keyboard (no change) and back to UK (still no change).
Today I started up my laptop to make my homework. So I tried to enter an "a with umlaut"(SHIFT+' then a) but it would not work. So I checked my keyboard input settings and it is looking like in the attachments.

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhenever the Win key is pressed on my external USB keyboard my laptop does whatever is set to happen when the power button is pressed on my laptop. E.g. sleep or hibernate. This does not happen when the laptop's Win key is pressed, only the external USB keyboard.
I don't think it's a problem with the keyboard itself because I've tested it on my friend's Windows 7 laptop and it functions as normal. Also, after turning the laptop back on whatever I was trying to do with the Win key has happened. E.g. If I do Win + F the laptop goes to standby. After switching it back on the file search panel is open.
I'm not sure when this started happening but it may have been after I did a registry clean with CCleaner. I always check what it's going to change and it seemed fine that time. I also keep backups of the changes which it makes. Restoring the backup didn't fix the problem.
Moved a few tiles and now I don't remember how it originally was. Just want it to look like how Microsoft intended it to be. Any option to reset the layout of the tiles?

I thought of retrieving the old "file history" on to the new rig but I'm afraid it would copy files that would make it unstable to to the hardware differences.
I want to disable the "allow this device to wake the computer" to prevent the accidental pressing of the keyboard waking up the PC. This option doesn't exist though, like it does with the USB mouse. Is there a way around this?

I went back to it yesterday (Sunday), and it says it will restart today.
I've been periodically checking it and I'm still getting the same message.
Is this normal? Can I override it somehow and get into my laptop??
Suddenly my toshiba windows 8 laptop was like corrupted and there is a message error came out like this 0xc000000e and I could not logon to my system already. I do not have a recovery disk with me and maybe there is any other way to restore my laptop.

In every power plan, Windows should go to sleep mode when closing the laptop lid, but that's not what's happening. Instead, Windows shuts down entirely, but the power light on my laptop indicates it's in sleep mode (flashing slowly). I also tried the built-in power plans (after just adjusting the appropriate setting), but the same happens. When i change the setting to do nothing (instead of going to sleep mode), it acts like it should: it does nothing.

I constantly have my laptop restarted when I walk away from it for a bit, it's been happening for the last couple of months now. On the occasions that I have caught it restarting I saw a glimpse of the BSOD. The last error mesage that I saw on BSOD was MEMORY_MANAGEMENT.

He was wondering whether he entered some sort of control sequence, accidentally, for this to happen.
He has managed to recover by going back to a restore checkpoint for earlier this week.
In case this happens again, is there any Windows control sequence he could have used to resolve this?
Recently I updated my laptop and when it was finished updating the keyboard no longer worked. Before the update it worked fine and I had no problems. I restarted it several times and restored it but still nothing. Now I am stuck using the on screen keyboard which is difficult. I also went to try and fix it using device manager but it wasn't listed.

It's fine at the login screen but, once I've logged on the problem occurs - and it happens on all programs. I know that this is specifically an issue with Windows 8, as I have a virtual Ubuntu machine on here that is working fine.

Is there anyway to turn the laptop without opening the lid by using the keyboard? View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm currently experiencing this issue and it's really annoying. I just bought this laptop for 2 months and it's been working fine. Then suddenly this problem started yesterday. Generally every time I open up a game my laptop will automatically switch to Power saver mode and it causes some lags in the game. At this point I would Alt+Tab to desktop and switch it to "High Performance". Here's the annoying part, even though I have set it back to "High Performance", the laptop still works as it in "Power saver" mode, I can tell because the game is still laggy and slow. I tried to restart the laptop and experienced the same issue. I ran a Full scan by using Avast Internet Security 2014 and didn't detect any problem at all. What should I do?

But when I use it in laptop mode (using regular keyboard to type), I still get the touch keyboard on screen when I touch the screen on a writing field. How can I disable the touch keyboard if I use the tablet in laptop mode?
I use a Gateway NE56R49u Windows 8 laptop, which I sometimes use to connect to a Dell computer monitor via VGA and an external keyboard and mouse using USB. I want to be able to use the monitor with the ext. mouse and keyboard while the lid of the laptop is closed, however, everytime I close the lid the system goes to sleep and won't turn back on even if I move the mouse or press a key on the keyboard. I've tried going to Device Manager and enabling the mouse and keyboard to wake my Windows 8 laptop but that seems to have no effect on what happens when I try to wake my laptop when the lid is closed. I am able to do this on a Windows 7 laptop (HP Pavilion g6), but how can I configure my windows 8 laptop so I can do the same on my Windows 8 laptop?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled my 8.1 pro (legal copy, disk been fully formatted) and it was okay for few hours. Next time im starting the laptop, my keyboard and touchpad doesnt work. I plugged USB mouse and keyboard and it works just fine. I went to device manager and besides Standart PS/2 keyboard and mouse icons there was orange triangle meaning that i have problem with drivers. I searched drivers online, but unsuccsessily.. After few hours of trying to fix it, my Standart PS/2 Keyboard turned into Unknown device and now im completely lost. Adding photo of device manager
