Is there a way to switch to a different keyboard language for as long as a key/combo modifier is pressed? I only need like 4 letters from another layout.
You can imagine how often I have to switch back and forth so I'd like a key just like shift, using another character on the same key.
How do I change the keyboard layout to UK layout? I have to use " key for @ and vice versa at the moment.

First, i used windows 8 and had no problems, my keyboard layout was the correct one (Spanish - Latin America, 'cause i'm from Argentina). But after an upgrade to windows 8.1, the default layout was set to Traditional Spanish wich does not suit the layout I see on my keyboard, signs are misplaced. I went to the control panel and under the idioms settings i set Latin American layout to my keyboard, but even with the correct configuration (checked with the layout image that is shown in the configuration menu), signs like ` and @ are still misplaced. What can I do?

From time to time I noticed there is installed a US keyboard, I am UK based and any setup keyboard/date etc are in UK format. Also when I installed the windows I selected (autodetected) the UK settings.
Also, I noticed that the US keyboard does not exist on the layouts (I am using Greek and UK), so in order to get rid of this, I have to add and the remove the US keyboard, but after a while re-appears!
I just noticed that my keyboard layout appears to be incorrect, and have been unable to resolve it after some googling around. The keyboard layout of my laptop is the UK English, but even with this setting in the language settings of windows I still am stuck using the US English version, so for example my @ and " are swapped around, and where the pound sign is.
I've tried downloading new language packs, and switching to the US keyboard (no change) and back to UK (still no change).
Today I started up my laptop to make my homework. So I tried to enter an "a with umlaut"(SHIFT+' then a) but it would not work. So I checked my keyboard input settings and it is looking like in the attachments.

(Running Windows 8.1 Enterprise RTM - TechNet x-64). Note you can only add language packs etc for PRO and above versions.
When I power up my HP Envy laptop with Windows 8 I'm asked to "Choose your keyboard layout" every time. Is there a way to stop this happening? Control Panel set for English (US).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have updated to windows 8.1 and recently i have having a lot of problems with how slowly my computer is running. May i say I have spent a lot and I mean a lot of time trying to fix this problem and I know it has nothing to do with disk space, viruses or drivers. This has been messing with my network adapter and has been giving me gateway accessibility problems even though there is nothing wrong with my connection proof being that if I diagnose the problem in my adapter it resets the adapter just to have the same problem later until reset it again and the connection and all my devices is fine.
This problem includes a momentary cursor pause at random times that only effects my trackpad if i plug a mouse in it works while my track pad is non functional, this can last from anywhere from usually 2-10 minutes until my trackpad becomes functional again. im not even getting "not responding" messages when it when it freezes at random times, i just have to wait until i hear that chime that sound like it comes from an information box then everything goes back to slow again and barely functional.
This problem includes playing media, being that when i play media it takes anywhere from 2-15 minutes before it starts playing, this media can be from playing music and videos on my hard drive to videos on youtube. When I start up my computer it works fine for a bit like 5-10 minutes then starts being slow again with sending information to execute actions (mainly media actions), i even get a lot of loading issues on skype. Even more to my conviction that its the operating system causing the problem is the fact i had my computer working normally for a week at random just with the gateway connectivity but all files I executed in the times quickly like they were supposed then with another boot sometime later it went back to being slow again.
i have one laptop and htpc running windows 8.1 and can't figure out how the sync works. Yesterday, i set it all up and and today turned my htpc on to have the same apps and layout. But nothing changed, turned the both pcs on and off and it did change but the other way, htpc to laptop, so got a messy layout.
Deleted all the apps from the start screen and started again but now won't change in neither of them. Just changed the wallpaper many times and sometimes changes but other times it doesn't.
I have an old HP laptop with W8.1 x64 which I have to replace. How can I transfer data to my new Asus (W8.1 x64 too) which has a very different hardware layout ?
I thought of retrieving the old "file history" on to the new rig but I'm afraid it would copy files that would make it unstable to to the hardware differences.

There are times when an application or a game is hijacking the screen/desktop, and hangs. When I try alt+ctrl+del task manager to kill it, I only see the task bar, and the rest of the desktop is black. So I can't see what I am doing. I installed Windows 8 x32 on my laptop. It has 3 GB RAM and the processor is x64-based. I don't use my laptop for much other than e-mail, Facebook, YouTube. Here are my questions:
Is there any point to switch from x32 to x64?
Is there any down side? I read somewhere that I won't be able to run 16-bit applications (I don't even know if they still exist)?
Do I need to do a clean install, or can I use the Upgrade install option rather than the Custom (advanced) install option?
For a number of reasons I prefer to keep my local account (no password) and my windows account separate and I find it annoying that I have to enter the password every time I want to switch back to the windows account. Is there any way to maintain the password for login but bypass it for switching?

Is there a way to create a shortcut to invoke the Switch User to a specific account? What I mean by this: Lets say you 2 users, A and B. The computer starts up and logs into A. Clicking on the account picture of A on the Start screen gives you the option to switch to B. When that is clicked, A is put in the background (not logged of) and B is logged in. It usually displays in Metro and it can be killed by switching to desktop and back to Metro. However last time it displayed in desktop and and was totally persistent to my killing attempts... So how to disable it to never appear again?
Have just purchased this; HP Pavilion g6-2210sa 15.6" Laptop - Red Deals | Pcworld Upon hearing that I was up for the challenge of setting it up myself, the sales assistant pointed out that the very first thing I must do is back up the OS (windows 8).
I asked, 'oh, is the OS on a hidden partition?' .. and he said no, its in the BIOS. And I only have one chance to make a back-up copy, as soon as I switch on. Also; if I have software issues after that point, but haven't backed up the OS, I can't claim it under the manufacturer's warranty as an issue.
I believe that the .. key? .. is in the bios now, so I never have to worry about losing it, but apart from that .. egad.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was playing a game on my laptop and decided to switch from wifi to ethernet. I plugged in the ethernet and turned off the wifi switch to ensure it switched over, but later when I tried to turn wifi back on, I see the wifi on/off switch is grayed out.
I went to my device manager to check for wifi network adapter driver updates, but everything seemed pretty up to date.
Any recommendations on how to fix this? Or at the least another method of turning the wifi on, like through command prompt or something?
I just bought a new laptop and the problem is, I cannot switch to a Microsoft account. It either gets stuck at the "preparing your account" window or would say that there are network problems. This has been happening since I bought this laptop, which is about a week now.
