A few weeks ago, after using the computer for some time, (The problem doesn't start until a few hours later) my programs won't start up unless running as administrator. All programs. Including notepad. (not sure about cmd) I have not done a full scan on my computer because it estimates more than one day and the estimated time still extends.

View 9 Replies View RelatedFirst let me say, I rarely leave my 8.1 system running all night as I generally switch off before bed.
On the FEW occasions I leave the system running all night I always get the "Your computer is low on memory" warning.
For instance, yesterday my software RAID mirror was "Re-synchronizing" and I wanted it to complete syncing so I left it running. NOTHING was running except Disk Manager. I closed down everything else. No browser, no Skype, no directory utility, no paint, no uTorrent....
Sure enough when I woke up this morning there it was....
A few days ago I wanted a couple of torrents to keep downloading so I kept the desktop running. Again NOTHING else was running and in the morning there it was....
I have 16Gb of memory and my pagefile.sys is 42Gb. My OS disc is a 250Gb SSD. I have set my system to hibernate after 5 hours idle. I have set the screen/display to sleep after 30 minutes.
The system isn't asleep when I wake as moving the mouse immediately brings the display back on line. Checking Task Manager shows NO memory hogs.
What I suspect is after 5 hours the hibernation process denies access to memory requests or something?
The strange thing is millions of people on 8.1 must leave their systems running all night but I have seen no mention of this behaviour.
Okay, I am getting Watch Dogs, Which is a 64-bit only game. My hardware is 64-bit capable, its just that my hard drive fried, and i am back onto my old HDD which had 32-bit Windows 8 installed.I upgraded to Windows 8.1 but now i want to go back to 64-bit.Is there a way to get my windows to 64-bit without anything else changing?I want everything EXACTLY the way it was, if possible.

View 3 Replies View RelatedHow do I switch to text mode? For example, in linux it's something like ctrl+shift+f7.
There are times when an application or a game is hijacking the screen/desktop, and hangs. When I try alt+ctrl+del task manager to kill it, I only see the task bar, and the rest of the desktop is black. So I can't see what I am doing. If I could only hijack it back, e.g. text mode to kill the application.
I installed Windows 8 x32 on my laptop. It has 3 GB RAM and the processor is x64-based. I don't use my laptop for much other than e-mail, Facebook, YouTube. Here are my questions:
Is there any point to switch from x32 to x64?
Is there any down side? I read somewhere that I won't be able to run 16-bit applications (I don't even know if they still exist)?
Do I need to do a clean install, or can I use the Upgrade install option rather than the Custom (advanced) install option?
For a number of reasons I prefer to keep my local account (no password) and my windows account separate and I find it annoying that I have to enter the password every time I want to switch back to the windows account. Is there any way to maintain the password for login but bypass it for switching?

View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to switch to a different keyboard language for as long as a key/combo modifier is pressed? I only need like 4 letters from another layout.
You can imagine how often I have to switch back and forth so I'd like a key just like shift, using another character on the same key.
Is there a way to create a shortcut to invoke the Switch User to a specific account? What I mean by this: Lets say you 2 users, A and B. The computer starts up and logs into A. Clicking on the account picture of A on the Start screen gives you the option to switch to B. When that is clicked, A is put in the background (not logged of) and B is logged in. Is there a way to automate that process?

MS has added another stupid thing in W8-1: SwitchPopup.jpg

Have just purchased this; HP Pavilion g6-2210sa 15.6" Laptop - Red Deals | Pcworld Upon hearing that I was up for the challenge of setting it up myself, the sales assistant pointed out that the very first thing I must do is back up the OS (windows 8).
I asked, 'oh, is the OS on a hidden partition?' .. and he said no, its in the BIOS. And I only have one chance to make a back-up copy, as soon as I switch on. Also; if I have software issues after that point, but haven't backed up the OS, I can't claim it under the manufacturer's warranty as an issue.
I believe that the .. key? .. is in the bios now, so I never have to worry about losing it, but apart from that .. egad.
Is there an auto-prompt, or do I need to do a regular ol' back-up .. and where do I back it up to, a separate hard drive/dvd etc?
So. I have this shiny, new, laptop. In it's shiny, new, unopened box, right now. And am starting to wonder if I should have coughed up the £50 to get 'em to set it up for me..!

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was playing a game on my laptop and decided to switch from wifi to ethernet. I plugged in the ethernet and turned off the wifi switch to ensure it switched over, but later when I tried to turn wifi back on, I see the wifi on/off switch is grayed out.
I went to my device manager to check for wifi network adapter driver updates, but everything seemed pretty up to date.
Any recommendations on how to fix this? Or at the least another method of turning the wifi on, like through command prompt or something?
I just bought a new laptop and the problem is, I cannot switch to a Microsoft account. It either gets stuck at the "preparing your account" window or would say that there are network problems. This has been happening since I bought this laptop, which is about a week now.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have just bought a new laptop with windows 8 and actually quite like the tile setup! Some programs I need to use are on the desktop and I regularly need to switch between desktop and start screen views. All I want to do is have an on screen 'windows button' that will take me from the desktop back to the start screen with a click of the mouse, as opposed to having to physically push the keyboard button.
I know this is ultimately lazy, but surely it should be simple and sometimes a mouse click is just so much easier than pushing the button!
I upgraded to Window 8.1 a couple of days ago. Since then, it takes about 5 minutes to sign out or "fast switch" to another user. If I shut down or restart, there is no delay. I have tried disabling startup items, but not sure what else to try.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI decided to pass on Windows 8 because my laptop is not working properly with Ubuntu (When you turn on or when the charger is on and connected his laptop so restart (P.S. When a car is on and run virtual "VirtualBox" and connect the charger stays lit))
And I would like to know how can I switch from Ubuntu to Windows without using DVD / USB?
P.S. The laptop is Toshiba Satellite A300 PSAG0E.
Well I have a weird setup between my monitors and I would like to easily switch between them all. I have 3 configurations I want to have :
1 : Eyefinity: Which basically makes my 3 monitors behave like a Single Large Surface(SLS). Resolution 46XX by 900
2 : Center : Turn off my monitor on the left and right and keep center only. Sometimes I want to run games at max high settings. Resolution 1440 X 900
3 : Panasonic : I want my Panasonic to be the main display. Resolution 1280 by 720
I have been trying to use AMD Vision software but it doesn't seem to work. I would assume that the presets would do such job.
I had Hyper-V and Ubuntu running on Windows 8 no problem. I've since done a fresh install to 8.1, and I can no longer create an External Virtual Switch. The button for "Create Virtual Switch" is grayed out when I select "External". I can create Internal and Private switches, but not External. There's no error or message so I'm having difficulty troubleshooting. All of the tutorials I've seen don't talk about any configuration I would need to do before creating an external switch. I have the default Windows 8.1 firewall and antivirus stuff.
Update:
I tried creating the Virtual Switch in PowerShell with the following commands
Code: PS C:WINDOWSsystem32> Get-NetAdapterName InterfaceDescription ifIndex Status MacAddress LinkSpeed Ethernet Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller 3 Up B8-97-5A-13-7C-E6 1 Gbps
[Code] ....
I'm not really sure why it couldn't find my physical network adapter, since it shows up with the Get-NetAdapter command.
I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Hyper-V enabled. When I had Windows 8 I could install a Virtual switch with out any problems, since upgrading I can not install a Virtual Switch with External or Internal settings.
Not sure if this is relevant or not but when I look at the Ethernet properties never "Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch" or "Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Protocol" are ticked. I have tried ticking them but get the error message "Could not add the requested feature. The error is: The data is invalid". I have checked that I am using the latest and correct driver for the card.
In Windows 8.1, when trying to change from regular password to Microsoft Account, in the end of the process (I pass it all the way to the last step) I get the message:
"Some settings are managed by your system administrator" and code 0x80070005.
I have Administrator account (there is only one account on the computer)
I bought a computer that was used in the store (last item). Apparently they have put some protection that limits changes (Group security?), and did not remove it when I took the computer.
I don't have "pro" so I don't have Secpol.msc .
how to remove these limitation, and restore the default settings?
