My son's laptop suddenly had all keyboard functions totally locked last night.
He was wondering whether he entered some sort of control sequence, accidentally, for this to happen.
He has managed to recover by going back to a restore checkpoint for earlier this week.
In case this happens again, is there any Windows control sequence he could have used to resolve this?
This is weird, occasionally as I open up firefox and go to enter text into any field I notice that I am unable to type. Instead what happens is if I hit a key such as F which is linked to a windows shortcut for files, the files search menu pops up even though i never pressed the windows key at any time. This problem isn't just limited to firefox, once it is started I have a very hard time getting it to being able to type normally. So if there is no shortcut linked to that key, there is no input otherwise i get the shortcuts (H - share, Q - search, etc). Restarting doesn't always work, sometimes all it takes is excessive clicking of a search bar, other times just closing an internet broswer. Pressing the windows key does nothing, and I haven't been able to find a concrete fix for the issue. Is there a way to fix and or avoid this completely?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Windows 8 laptop (model is HP Pavilion g6-2210us) and for some reason it no longer boots. Here's pretty much in order how it went down:
-Windows 8 stops responding for no apparent reason
-I force a shut down and try to turn it back on, thinking that would fix it
-It starts loading Windows 8 up like normal, but it's taking an extremely long time to do it.
-After a while (about 20-30 minutes) it stops loading it and just goes black, but the screen is still on
-After this happening 4-5 times and nothing happening, I hit the power button 3 times to try Automatic Repair, which says "Preparing Automatic Repair" for 20-30 minutes, then goes black again
I think it may be hard drive failure but the drive gave no signs of dying, like slowing down, they don't usually just die like this. It's more likely to be just file corruption, but I have no Windows 8 disc, and I never knew I would need to make my own recovery disc. Anyway, I do know how to do the replacement of anything that can be replaced in most laptops, and I would probably just load up Linux or another free OS on the new drive if I need to get one.
This laptop will not shut down fully...basically when I ask it to shut down, it appears to do everything properly to the point where the screen turns off and the lights turn out....except for one. The power light goes from green to a pulsing orange. It's like it's only putting it to sleep because if I press a key on the keyboard it turn on almost instantly.
I should say that the person who gave me this laptop said she had this issue when she first bought it and couldn't be bothered to get it fixed (as you do). Also, this happens regardless of whether the battery is in the machine or not, or vice versa with the power cable.
I was thinking it's an ATK thing but then it did it with Win 7 with the official drivers. BIOS is also up to date.
Recently I updated my laptop and when it was finished updating the keyboard no longer worked. Before the update it worked fine and I had no problems. I restarted it several times and restored it but still nothing. Now I am stuck using the on screen keyboard which is difficult. I also went to try and fix it using device manager but it wasn't listed.

It's fine at the login screen but, once I've logged on the problem occurs - and it happens on all programs. I know that this is specifically an issue with Windows 8, as I have a virtual Ubuntu machine on here that is working fine.
None of the keyboard settings have been altered and no new applications have been installed or upgraded recently.

I use a Gateway NE56R49u Windows 8 laptop, which I sometimes use to connect to a Dell computer monitor via VGA and an external keyboard and mouse using USB. I want to be able to use the monitor with the ext. mouse and keyboard while the lid of the laptop is closed, however, everytime I close the lid the system goes to sleep and won't turn back on even if I move the mouse or press a key on the keyboard. I've tried going to Device Manager and enabling the mouse and keyboard to wake my Windows 8 laptop but that seems to have no effect on what happens when I try to wake my laptop when the lid is closed. I am able to do this on a Windows 7 laptop (HP Pavilion g6), but how can I configure my windows 8 laptop so I can do the same on my Windows 8 laptop?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled my 8.1 pro (legal copy, disk been fully formatted) and it was okay for few hours. Next time im starting the laptop, my keyboard and touchpad doesnt work. I plugged USB mouse and keyboard and it works just fine. I went to device manager and besides Standart PS/2 keyboard and mouse icons there was orange triangle meaning that i have problem with drivers. I searched drivers online, but unsuccsessily.. View 9 Replies View RelatedLaptop Keyboard and Mouse is not working properly now. Last time this occurred which was about 3 months ago, I reset-ed Windows 8 and it was all working again. When this occurs, in both incidents, I can't go to bios, can't enter password to login, can't open on-screen keyboard(except sometimes), and even if I get open, using it is same as using the keyboard.
Mouse errors: LMB changes to Select all thing so I can't click anything. This issue is same at least most of the time.
Keyboard errors: This varies a lot from time to time.
I reset-ed OS this time too and the problem still exists unlike before.
Ex: I'm not sure this key is this or not, but it was I think Z is ctrl, x is alt, a don't work, ctrl, alt, shift don't work. Then, keyboard itself keep on pressing space or opening windows support.
And then I updated my BIOS and now the problem was a little bit solved or I think it would be best to say the problem changed bit.
Now z,x,a, spacebar, ctrl, alt, shift, everything working,except ! and maybe a few other keys, but now It keeps pressing caps lock, shift and opening up windows support.
Then I restarted, and now I pressed F2(BIOS) and it let me in. I tried changing the boot priorty order but those keys F5/F6 aren't working, so I restarted, now again I can't press F2.
And sometimes laptop beeps for some reason on booting up.
There are no keyboard drivers except the default one and sticky and filter are all off.
I am using Windows 8. Often a web page will not fully load and I have use "refresh" one or more times to get it to load. Is there something I am doing wrong or a setting I can change?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI just installed a fresh copy of windows 8.1 on my Asus N53S laptop that comes stock with Windows 7 and now my keyboard shortcuts for volume do not work. Above the F1-F4 keys i have three buttons to mute, increase and decrease the volume which do not work. The keyboard shortcut's for muting, decreasing and increasing volume do not work either (Fn+F10-F12) but the shortcut for decreasing brightness and turning the screen off works (Fn+F5-F7) If there is any way to get this working again.

when i install my windows 8 this afternoon i set my location into indonesia. so all of my settings was in bahasa. i've done as the guide said but in my "START", things like Music, Weather, Pictures and some others are still in their bahasa language. while others like Maps and Computers are already changed into English.

I typed in delete user account and followed the prompts which appeared to delete my only user account. Now at power up the user account still comes up and I have to backtrack to get to my Microsoft account to login. How to complete the delete of the user account?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have uninstalled my synaptics mouse pad driver and wanted to boot pc in safe mode but then Bit Defender rescue scan menu pops up and gives me option to Reboot and Shutdown. I tried both options but all of them give me same result and bring me back to the Rescue Scan. I then tried to scan because I may have some sort of virus thats causing it but it says "Failed to load Antivirus engines" and now i am stuck and can't boot my pc fully. Why has this happened? I also installed an intel driver for my processor before that. The program has created restore points before installation of the driver but i can't access them.

I have done plenty of image restores on Win 7, but always gone all the way through.
Can I turn the laptop off at some point before I fully set it up, so the buyer will get to set it up for themselves?
Whenever the Win key is pressed on my external USB keyboard my laptop does whatever is set to happen when the power button is pressed on my laptop. E.g. sleep or hibernate. This does not happen when the laptop's Win key is pressed, only the external USB keyboard.
I don't think it's a problem with the keyboard itself because I've tested it on my friend's Windows 7 laptop and it functions as normal. Also, after turning the laptop back on whatever I was trying to do with the Win key has happened. E.g. If I do Win + F the laptop goes to standby. After switching it back on the file search panel is open.
I'm not sure when this started happening but it may have been after I did a registry clean with CCleaner. I always check what it's going to change and it seemed fine that time. I also keep backups of the changes which it makes. Restoring the backup didn't fix the problem.
Yesterday I was working on some stuff on my computer and left it when my door rang. When I came back the computer was on but no matter how many times I tried to move the mouse or press keyboard shortcuts Windows wouldn't come back on. So I manually powered down, and then it got worse. It wouldn't repair manually or from the Windows disk. I tried all kinds of stuff. I tried a refresh install but I got this
"The drive where Windows is installed is locked" Then this morning when I went back to back to turn it on and trouble shot. All I got was a black screen. No NVIDIA window or anything.
Every time I use a FLAC file, I noticed on the delete, and rename in right click context menu, there is a UAC shield next to the text, initially thought nothing of it, but now I just go to delete the FLAC files, and it's refusing to let me, says I need Administration Permission, thing is...I am the admin!!
Same issue when I select rename, or drag to another folder. Is there anyways to stop Windows from locking these files? It's literally only FLAC files it does it with!

Just purchased a new Inspiron Desktop from Dell and the Windows 8 setup was all going well...
1) set up computer account OK using existing hotmail account - accesses email Ok
2) reach stage of wanting to transfer user files from external hard disk
3) notice that top-level user directory and below on new machine are all read-only so figure I should turn that off
4) system starts changing attributes for hundreds(?) of files - I was only expecting a few directories to be affected so I cancel that process and set all back to read-only and load user files
5) BUT... accessing email from the start page now just hangs - sits there with the rotating circles - everything else functioning OK
6) ran out of time so figure I'll investigate later - turn off system
7) now try to login on startup and after accepting account password it just sits there. Occasionally the start screen (with blank icons) is flashed up very briefly.
8) Do some of the files under the user directory need to have write access? But how can I now gain access to them if I can't get into the machine?
I have windows 8.1 and am trying to do a refresh as I've had some problems. But I keep getting a message that says, "The drive where windows are installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." I then did a scan using "SFC/SCANNOW" When it was finished it said that it found some corrupt files but could not fix some of them. So the question is: What is a locked drive and how do you unlock it?

I followed the tip on organizing into groups - quite useful.
However, once I have my start screen organized the way I like, I find that within groups icons tend to 'shift' positions randomly - which is irritating.
Any way to 'lock' them so once they are in position - one would think MS would have thought of that already.
Noticed something interesting - I am on a dual monitor set-up and when I open the start screen on a different monitor the organization of the start screen changes. Maybe that is why it is not an option (?) ...
