Updates :: Windows Update Taking Days - Message On New Laptop

Jan 20, 2014

I got a message on my new laptop that Windows was updating and would take 2 days. This was on Friday.

I went back to it yesterday (Sunday), and it says it will restart today.

I've been periodically checking it and I'm still getting the same message.

Is this normal? Can I override it somehow and get into my laptop??

Updates :: Windows 8 Update Taking Up Too Much Disk Space

Jul 14, 2014

I just did a clean install of windows 8 without all the Dell software being installed on my Dell Inspiron 7720 17R SE Laptop.

When the installation was finished I had 179GB of free space showing on the 200GB drive C: partion.

I just finished downloading and installing 111 recommended Windows updates and I now have only 164GB of free space showing on drive C:

I dread to think how much more space will be taken up when I upgrade to 8.1

Surely Windows updates shouldn't take up 15GB of space...How I can recover some of this space.

After appearing to complete the updates, it then said failure configuring updates, reverting changes do not turn off. It has now been on this screen for 3 hours. Updates :: Windows 8 On Dell Laptop Fails To Update / Repair Or Restore

Sep 15, 2014

I am attempting to repair a Dell Inspiron 5520 Laptop for a friend of mine.

He's been having issues updating it for sometime and when he called me he was having a "Windows update hasn't been able to check for new updates for 30 days" pop-up appearing every few seconds that was rendering the laptop almost unusable.

I managed to stop that by disabling automatic updates. When I attempted a manual update I got the message :

Windows could not search for new updates: Error Found Code 80070BC9

Other times it would say it needed to be restarted and would go into a restart loop that was generally
Restart one - no message
Restart two - configuring updates - 33%, 67%, 100%
Restart three - failed to configure updates - reverting - restarting
Then would go to the normal login screen

I tried SFC /Scannow which seemed to work and say a restart is needed to implement changes but then fails on restart

DISM didn't work when attempting to run it from the machine but got to 100% when I ran it from my own Windows 8 install disk but then failed and needed a restart to undo the changes.

I also tried a repair and a restore of the current Windows installation but got : Error Code: 80070490 both times

The laptop didn't come with an install disk or serial so it seems restoring it from external media may be out of the question?

Updates :: Apply Latest Win 8.1 Update To Laptop Plus Desktop

Aug 13, 2014

I have a Laptop, plus a Desktop, both running Win 8.1 - 64-bit

I posted my question here Windows 8.1 Aug Update Released (KB2975719)

But was told I should rather post it in this section for more responses, so here goes ...

I have 1 x Laptop, plus 1 x Desktop that I need to update with the latest MS update releases.

That means I will need to download & update on each machine. Both are Windows 8.1 64-bit units, and they have both had all previous updates installed.

Given that my Internet connection is very slow, and "out of bundle" data usage is VERY expensive here in South Africa, is there a way I can download the update once, save it to a USB drive, and use that to update both machines?

Once the update file is on the USB drive, how to install the update file on each machine? e.g. can I just copy the file to each machine, and then run/execute the files?

Updates :: Keep Getting (Activate Windows) Message

Jan 13, 2014

For the past week or so, I am suddenly (in the middle of working on something) getting a blue screen that says "Activate Windows. Go to PC Settings to activate Windows." And there's a PC settings button to click. The only way out of that screen is to click there. So I do, and it briefly looks like I'm going to go to some sort of settings screen, but then it disappears and it takes me to my start screen. When I go back to my desktop, whatever I was working on is right where I left it. Happens several times a day.

Why this is happening and why it never actually takes me to PC Settings and what I can do to stop this?

I'm running 8.1 - I "upgraded" (I use that term loosely!) when it first became available back in October.

Attempting Repairs Message After Windows 8.1 Update

Apr 11, 2014

I have a Toshiba Encore, which I updated. When I start it up it has the message 'Preparing Automatic repair', then a black screen and a Windows windows flashes up for a split second. I then get the message 'Diagnosing your PC', the 'Attempting Repairs'.

I then get a blue screen with the title 'Automatic Repair' with the message: Automatic Repair couldnt repair your PC...... Log file C:windowssystem32logfilessrtsrttrail.txt

There are two options 'Shutdown' and 'Advanced options'.

'Advanced options' gives:
Continue'- exit to windows 8.1
'Use a device'
'Troubleshoot'
'Turn off your PC'

Troubleshoot gives:
'Refresh your PC'
'Reset your PC'
'Toshiba maintenece'
'Advanced Options'

Advanced Options gives:
'System restore'- ive tried this but there are no restore points
'System image recovery'
'Start up repair'- Tried this, just goes to 'Preparing automatic repair'
'Command prompt'- This works
'UEFI Firmware Settings'
'Start-up Settings'- Tried this, just goes to 'Preparing automatic repair'

So apart from refreshing and resetting which I haven't tried yet, I can get into a Command prompt. The command prompt starts in X:. When I open Notepad and browse the file system i notice that X: is called 'Boot'. I'm wondering whether the 8.1 update has put something on my PC that makes it try to boot from X: instead of C:. Is there any way I can check what drive the PC is trying to boot from?

The log file states
Root cause found: Boot manager failed to find OS loader
Repair action: File repair
Result:failed. Error code 0xa

Repair action: Boot configuratio data store repair
Result:failed. Error code 0x490

Network / Sharing :: Internet Will Cut Off Every Few Days - Requires Restart

Apr 23, 2014

I had Windows Vista installed, and have done a clean install of Windows 8.1, but exactly the same problem occurs.

Every few days, my internet will cut. There are no error messages, my network icon says I have internet access. When I use a browser, there are no error messages but links when clicked just fail to respond. When I type in a search in the search bar and press enter, nothing happens.

I generally hibernate the laptop, as I often have open word documents and internet tabs that I like to keep in front of me, rather than starting from scratch each day. If I reboot the computer, the internet returns. I have tried to run "ipconfig /flushdns" "netsh winsock reset catalog", but they require a reboot, and a reboot without doing these things always works anyway.

When I run trouble shooting, the following error message appears:

Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (Microsoft Corporation) is not responding Detected Detected

Contact your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) Completed

Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (Microsoft Corporation). The computer or service you are trying to reach might be temporarily unavailable.

I ran ipconfig and get the following:

Updates :: How To Revert A Windows Update

Jun 17, 2014

My son has an MSI Laptop running Windows 8.1. Following a recent Windows update (he cannot be more specific) he is no longer able to use his Admin (the only one) account. He sees the mouse pointer but the rest of the screen is black. Ctrl-Alt-Del does bring up a panel offering the usual options to shut down, reboot, Task Manager, etc. - but when I select Task Manager with the intention of seeing what processes are running, the dialogue does appear, but before it is properly displayed it vanishes.

Meanwhile the HDD light is burning constantly. If I simply leave the machine for 30 minutes or so, then the HDD activity subsides but there is still a blank screen. Moving the mouse pointer to the top or bottom right hand side of the screen has no effect.

Unfortunately we did not have the wits to set restore points Interestingly the other account (not administrator) is working without problem.

Updates :: Windows 8.1 - New Update Available Notification In Taskbar?

A niggle that's potentially quite a problem is that my 8.1 laptop Taskbar is not notifying me that "New Updates are Available."

I never set to install them automatically, I like to know what's going on and choose how to use my connection and processing power, but the notification from the Log In screen is easily missed and not satisfactory in my opinion. I think there's a third party piece of software to correct this, but I was wondering if there's a better way to restore the function?
