Dec 19, 2012

My laptop started installing updates when I powered down for four hours I have had this message on the screen - keep your PC plugged in until this is done. Installing update 17 of 24.....

How long do I leave this or can I power off and try and restart?

Updates :: Windows Update Taking Days - Message On New Laptop

Jan 20, 2014

I got a message on my new laptop that Windows was updating and would take 2 days. This was on Friday.

I went back to it yesterday (Sunday), and it says it will restart today.

I've been periodically checking it and I'm still getting the same message.

Is this normal? Can I override it somehow and get into my laptop??

Creating Windows 8 Recovery Drive Taking Extremely Long Time

Aug 7, 2013

I am creating a Windows 8 recovery drive on a new 16GB flash drive (The only option with my new refurbished Gateway NE56R49u Laptop). The process has been running approximately 5 hours now with the green progress bar being only 1/32 inch from complete for approximately 4 hours. Should I click the "cancel" tab and/or the "red X" to close the program? If I do, will I be able to start the process again? This just seems like an extremely long time to complete such a small portion (1/32 inch on the progress bar) of the process.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 Pro - Taking Long Time To Recognize Internet Connection

Mar 2, 2014

So, I have been running 8.1 pro for some time now. During the last 2 or 3 weeks, I started having a login issue.

It loads bios, loads windows fine. I get to the login screen, and it seems to take forever to recognize internet connection. Gives me the little "!" over the internet. I put in password. Takes about a minute to finally log in.

I have gone to start up in task manager and disabled everything. This does nothing. I have changed from a live to a local account. Nothing. I have not installed anything recently other then video drivers. Internet seems to work fine while logged in.

Have all the most recent mobo drivers.......

Hardware
Asrock z77 Fatality Pro
Core i7 3770k
Kingston X SSD for OS drive.

Anything else in my hardware does not really seem relevant.....

I am attempting o OC my cpu and gpu and have to reboot a lot to dial it in.

Here is a really bad pic of what I am seeing on the login screen. It takes up to 3 minutes to establish connection when it used to be almost instantaneous.

Here are some other things I have done.

-Updated router firm ware: no change
-Tried static ip: nodda
-Disabled all virus software: nothing.
-Differnet cable. nothing

still having the issue......

Updates :: Windows 8 Update Taking Up Too Much Disk Space

Jul 14, 2014

I just did a clean install of windows 8 without all the Dell software being installed on my Dell Inspiron 7720 17R SE Laptop.

When the installation was finished I had 179GB of free space showing on the 200GB drive C: partion.

I just finished downloading and installing 111 recommended Windows updates and I now have only 164GB of free space showing on drive C:

I dread to think how much more space will be taken up when I upgrade to 8.1

Surely Windows updates shouldn't take up 15GB of space...How I can recover some of this space.

Updates :: Laptop Never Finishes Updates?

Jan 10, 2014

My laptop has been updating since 7am and it's now 3pm. It's still on ONE of TWENTY ONE updates. It says do not unplug, which I did not but I did shut it down because this is ridiculous. This is also the 2nd time it has happened. The first time I shut down (A couple of weeks ago) and when I turned it back on it took me to my desktop and everything was fine. But now, it's not taking me to my desktop. The instant I turn it back on it says Installing ONE of TWENTY ONE. How can I get this to stop? I have important documents on my laptop and I take online classes. I don't want my computer to install ANY updates.

Updates :: PC Reboot Time Increased After 8.1 Update

Oct 18, 2013

My laptop reboot time has increased to a significant amount (about 15-20 secs, earlier it was < 5 secs) after I updated to Windows 8.1.

I am talking about the time it takes to lock screen to appear after I power on the laptop not the time from logging in to desktop visibility. Still I have reduced the number of start-up programs, and its of no use.

How can I reduce this time?

Windows 8 Updates - BSoD Every Time On Running UTorrent

Jul 19, 2013

I've been having some problems after installing some updates. For example, after installing these updates, every time I run uTorrent, I get a Blue Screen of Death, almost instantly. The problem is not with the software because I always used the same and nothing ever happened like that. The Blue Screens of Death were more frequent when the software was run. I researched a lot and saw a lot of people reported problems with the update KB2821895 and have not yet emerged any official response or fix patch from Microsoft. I was instructed to run in the command prompt, the following commands:

sfc / scannow
dism / online / clean-up / restoreheath

The problem is that when I run the sfc / scannow, after checking 100%, he is just standing there, frozen in 100% with no response.

And running *** / restorehealth, there was much delay and it got stuck at 20% and after a long time went to 40% where it has remained for hours, so it haven't finished the way it should.

Updates :: Failure Configuring Windows Updates From Clean Install

May 24, 2014

After a BSOD and utter failure to boot (presumably a critical OS file damaged) I ran the recovery tools for a total factory reset.

Connected to the internet and worked for an hour or two, then tried a reboot. Windows update had 104 updates to process. It did them, then "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer"

This should take half an hour. After 90 minutes it has rebooted 5 or 6 times. It keeps reverting to the same "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" message. Looks like it might want to reboot through each of those 104 updates.

I'm going to repeat the factory reset and the FIRST thing I will do is disable updates. I'm going to see how long I can work without any updates.

Windows 8.1 Pro 32bit - Icons In Folders Taking Too Long To Display Correctly

Is there a way of correcting this?

Updates :: No Boot After Updates - System Restore Only Option Available?

Aug 19, 2013

I have had to system restore 3 or 4 times in the last week or so as Windows 8 refuses to boot after installing the latest updates discovered from the last couple of weeks (though some are from December 2012)

I have unchecked all the current updates and have decided against installing them as they seem to be preventing Windows from booting.

Pattern - "Restart to install updates"

Restart locks on the start screen - Restart again and locks again (repeat this process 3x)

"Windows is automatically repairing..." - Fails

"Windows must restore settings to a previous time..." - Usually succeeds, sometimes fails.

Then I can get back into Windows.

As soon as I install these updates, I won't get back into Windows until I system restore since before the updates and my build won't remain stable unless I prevent Windows from installing these updates. What could be going on?

They are quite big updates (totalling ~740mb and have all been discovered in the last week or so though some date back to late last year)

Updates :: Windows 8.1 - Error 0XC000021A After Optional Updates

Mar 13, 2014

I was reviewing my windows updates and saw two optional updates that were pending. First one was for MS office and it went through fine. Second one was some update to AMD vision control center. During that update screen flashed couple of times and went for re-start. After that I am unable to get into the system. I tried safe mode/debugging/low resolution mode etc.. But all resulted in the same blue screen with the 0xc000021a error message.

I am able to go only to command prompt. Nothing else (fortunately I am able to backup my photos by connecting external hard drive and using command prompt). I checked the SRT log file but it doesn't say any issue. All passed.

I tried refresh PC but it came back and said "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes made".

I tried using win ISO image bootable flash drive. It couldn't get through me in (I just tried with PC repair option when I booted with ISO image).

Is there a way I can get over it without re-installing?

Updates :: Failed To Configure Updates / Reverting Changes Loop

Jul 15, 2014

So I restored my system because I had no other choice from it not booting before and it was working for a day, then when I restarted it said 'installing XX / 93 updates' so I let that run, and when It finally finished, it restarted said 'configuring windows updates XX% complete...' and then it suddenly said "Failed to configure updates. Reverting Changes." and then it looped this by restarting, trying to configure them, and then saying "Failed to configure updates. Reverting Changes." again...

I've got back into safe mode, what should I do to make it update properly again?

Someone suggested toggling "Secure Boot" in the BIOS, is that worth a try?

Updates :: Checking For Updates Hangs After Disk Clean Up

Mar 22, 2014

When I run Check for Updates it just hangs. It says it is checking for updates and green progress bar is repeatedly running across, but nothing happens.

Before this problem arose I had just run disk clean-up including remove installation files and windows updates. The disk clean-up process removed about 59 GB including a large Windows.old folder.

I upgraded to Windows 8 from XP about 10 days ago. Windows update was working fine until the disk clean-up. I ran Check for Updates frequently after the upgrade to make sure I got all the updates, it worked perfectly well for both update and install.

I have tried Checking for Updates several times since running disk clean-up.

First time I ran it I had this error message: Windows Update error 0x8024a000 (only seen that one time)

I ran the Update Troubleshooter after that and it found/fixed the following:

Potential windows update database error detected 0x80070490 -Fixed
Windows update components must be fixed - fixed

The troubleshooter did not resolve the issue. I have run Check for Updates many times since with no more error messages, but it just hangs. When I run the Update troubleshhooter it fixes the same two issues as above.

Since the disk clean, Windows Update shows:

Most recent check for updates - Never
Updates were installed - Never.

As my Windows Updates were previously all succesfully installed, the history must have been cleared.

No error messages have been seen since that first one which has not repeated.

Updates :: How To Get List Of Installed Updates In Numeric Order

Sep 15, 2014

When I was having problems with KB2975719, and going thru solutions, it drove me nuts trying to find if I had certain updates installed from the Installed List in Windows 8.1 since they are not in numerical order. (Contol Panel >Uninstall A Program > View Installed Updates)

I finally figured out where to find a numerical list which I could check much easier in determining if the updates required in some solutions were installed on my pc.

1. Install Belarc Advisor

2. Run and open Belarc Advisor

3. At the bottom of the opening page of BA, click on "click here to see all installed hotfixes" - a numeric order list.

4. Just to be sure all were there, I printed this list and manually compared it to my Control Panel Installed Updates one time.

I then had a numerical list to compare to all the KB's required for installation of KB2975719. Much easier for this simple brain than remembering a number and looking for it jumbled list.

Updates :: Network Failure After Loading Latest Updates To Win 8.1

Dec 10, 2013

I am trying to get things going with my Dell Venue 8 Pro, and I go through the initial setup fine. However, when I do Windows Update the network fails to connect after the following reboot.

When I look at the device/driver, it says it is working, but when I do a network troubleshooting it claims it must be a bad driver.

The driver doesn't seem to have been updated, based on the fact that the button to roll back is grayed out.

When I do a restore of my system, it works again until I do the Windows Update.

I have done this a couple of times, once with all updates, including the optional updates, and once downloading only the critical and important updates.

Other than doing each update individually, is there a reasonable way to figure out what is causing my issue?
