My laptop reboot time has increased to a significant amount (about 15-20 secs, earlier it was < 5 secs) after I updated to Windows 8.1.
I am talking about the time it takes to lock screen to appear after I power on the laptop not the time from logging in to desktop visibility. Still I have reduced the number of start-up programs, and its of no use.
How can I reduce this time?
I had 8.1 installed, and did the update from 8/12/2014 and now I can't change my date and time from the desktop, it gives me the following message;
You are attempting to open a file type of 'System file' (.cpl)

Unlike Win7 and earlier, the Window's Update GUI doesn't show the time setting (or the field to set/reset it).. How do I change the Window's Update checking time. Mine currently checks at 6:34AM and my computer isn't even on until 9 or 10AM

I'm having the same problem with my Acer w500 which uses mSATA SSD drives only. I have upgraded to a Mushkin Atlas 120GB V series SSD and obviously upgraded to Windows 8 (professional) and every time it wakes from sleep it says there was a problem and needs to reboot. I'm going to put the stock 32GB Sandisk SSD back in later today and see if the problem is still present. I do have the latest BIOS on this computer and the latest firmware on the Mushkin SSD, drivers are the latest from Acer and most are November 2012 dates. There are no BIOS settings on this computer, all I really get are boot order, AHCI or IDE mode, and a couple other trivial things so I can't change suspend to ram or suspend to disk settings. I'll make the changes to hopefully show the BSOD when it comes out of sleep so I can try to gather more info.
This was a "clean" upgrade install (do not keep any settings or applications) which puts all the old stuff in a .old file, it was a clean from restore disk win7 that was used as the base OS to allow an upgrade, and is the 32 bit version of Windows 8.
Any time windows updates, it's supposed to turn off, then turn back on to finish.
Well anytime it turns off, it won't turn back on. The last time it did this, it corrupted the BCD.
The computer shuts down ok via the menu, and will start back up when I power it on, but if I hit restart, it just shuts off, and won't come back on unless the power button is pressed.
He says the last thing the computer did was a windows updated and the day after did not start, when i start it so comes the logo forward "VI10" and a loading circle below for a 1min or 2. then you hear the fan is increasing and it is reading something, then it jumps to a black screen for 1-2 minutes then comes "Preparing to configure Windows".
I let it stand for six hours before I turned it off and start looking try start it in safe mode, have used boot setup before on XP and W7 so know how it looks / works but I can not access it anywhere, I read somewhere you could force it with F8 but do not work .

Is there a site where updates can be downloaded according to their KB numbers then installed manually?
I'am using Windows 8.1 with all latest updates. I'm facing problem with Windows update since installation of a fresh copy of windows. I always keep Windows update to automatic windows update installation mode. But if I reboot my laptop or shutdown it, then the update turns to "Never check for updates" mode. For example, after installing these updates, every time I run uTorrent, I get a Blue Screen of Death, almost instantly. The problem is not with the software because I always used the same and nothing ever happened like that. The Blue Screens of Death were more frequent when the software was run. I researched a lot and saw a lot of people reported problems with the update KB2821895 and have not yet emerged any official response or fix patch from Microsoft. I was instructed to run in the command prompt, the following commands:
sfc / scannow
dism / online / clean-up / restoreheath
The problem is that when I run the sfc / scannow, after checking 100%, he is just standing there, frozen in 100% with no response.
And running *** / restorehealth, there was much delay and it got stuck at 20% and after a long time went to 40% where it has remained for hours, so it haven't finished the way it should.
I have just updated my laptop to Windows 8.1, it now takes about 3/4 minutes to load after entering my password, all I get is a blank screen for all that time before I see the desktop.

Installed Win 8 Pro with 'keep Win 7 settings' option, then noticed that it displayed GMT rather than UTC+10 for Canberra, Australia. Checked and updated 'Date and Time' to (UTC+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, made sure Location was 'Australia' and Language 'English (Australia)' and still the system time is 4am when it should be 4pm.

Windows 8 itself is updating fine using Windows Update. However, it doesn't provide updates for Office and other MS products. Where it says in the WU dialog box "You receive updates for:" it indicates "Windows Only." Going into Windows Update settings does not offer the "Microsoft Update" option that is available in windows 7. My son has an MSI Laptop running Windows 8.1. Following a recent Windows update (he cannot be more specific) he is no longer able to use his Admin (the only one) account. He sees the mouse pointer but the rest of the screen is black. Ctrl-Alt-Del does bring up a panel offering the usual options to shut down, reboot, Task Manager, etc. - but when I select Task Manager with the intention of seeing what processes are running,the dialogue does appear, but before it is properly displayed it vanishes.
Meanwhile the HDD light is burning constantly. If I simply leave the machine for 30 minutes or so, then the HDD activity subsides but there is still a blank screen. Moving the mouse pointer to the top or bottom right hand side of the screen has no effect.
Unfortunately we did not have the wits to set restore points Interestingly the other account (not administrator) is working without problem.

Ever since upgrading to Windows 8.1 I haven't been able to change my update settings. The drop-down is greyed out and can't be clicked on. Above the drop down it says "Some settings are managed by your system administrator"
I've deleted my user account and created a new one, but the problem remains. I've unlocked the Administrator account, but even through that account the settings can't be changed. I'm not in a homegroup, as I've heard this could solve the problem and I've disconnected and reconnected my Microsoft account to my User Account to no avail.
Windows keeps updating and I don't have the bandwidth to continue this way.
Today I noticed that I could not access the Internet on my Toshiba laptop. It is not the computer I use everyday, so I did not need to get on the 'Net. The last thing I remember doing was Using the Shutdown and install updates command.
To remedy I had to use a Restore point. I used the one for May before the updates. Now there is no problem.
I use Chrome exclusively.
I have an HP that I cannot get to activate. I did a clean install and my login is an admin. I deselected installing Norton's during the reset but it was there when I booted up so I removed it with the Norton's removal tool. I tried activating by using the "Windows activation" from the search button and then tried by using an elevated command prompt of "slui.exe 4" but both ways gave me a 0xc0000022 error.

How to check if i update the windows 8.1 update 1 from x64 bits systems because i download all packages from microsoft download center and install in that order and dont recive error. Every package ask me to reestart i see all packages are installed on update history and on the section installed updates but I don't see nothing related to windows 8.1 update 1 as the way as see when you install from win update. I check for updates and dont find nothing. I have my service packs and mayor updates on my pc stored because in this house all use win 8.1 x64 and we have a slow connection and because i install by this way. I must say you i see all characteristics of the update 1 but i want to know if don't have errors i ran dism online clean up image restore health and sfc scannow and dont find errors. I only am worried because if this update was not installed properly the supports ends on may 13 and want to have install by the right way.

The past week or so I have had a problem with updates for windows defender in win 8.1 failing to work. Is it from any of the last updates on patch Tuesday? or another problem. I can get the update from a windows site and install it from that but not from defender its self or windows update.

I never set to install them automatically, I like to know what's going on and choose how to use my connection and processing power, but the notification from the Log In screen is easily missed and not satisfactory in my opinion. All updates that were installed get undone. And if you install updates again, it will do the same thing. The reason is because of one update: IE 11 Windows 8.1 - KB2962872
