On my new Windows 8 machine, every time I put an audio CD into the disk drive, the Power DVD program starts. THis is MOST ANNOYING! I want audio CDs to launch Windows Media Player so that I can rip them to the hard drive. If I go to Control Panel -> Default Programs -> Associate a File Type with a Program, there is NO LISTING in there for .cda files, which is what compact disc audio files are.
View 2 RepliesEverytime I install Windows 8 , the default file association all goes to Metro UI associated. I won't use Metro UI at all , instead use the Desktop. So everytime I've go to the [Control Panel] .. Programs] ... [Make a file type always open in a specific program] It's very annoying. Is there a simple way to let me change all the files association type such as by .reg. I've tried regshot program to get certain file association change registry then import it to the registry , but with fail. As it said program is in use , forbitten ...I can't thinks of a simple way to solve this program even in the safe mode.

Even though Firefox is already registered with file types such as: .html, .htm, .ftp, etc, it won't let me uncheck them as well as for other programs.
I don't want to change the Firefox associations, though.
I've also tried : Default programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program . To no avail either.
FileTypesMan didn't work much of either.
It appears third party software and the usual method, aka Default programs, can no longer change some file type associations so easily now.

How can I change file type associations in Windows 8?
For example .jpg files open in Photos app, fine, but when I right-click and choose "edit" Paint opens up. I want to change it from Paint to Photoshop and there seems to be no way to do that.
In Windows 7 I used Creative Elements Power Tools for this, but it is not compatible with Windows 8.
When I try to open a PDF file, I always/still gets the question "How do you want to open this type of file (pdf) ?"
I tried the usual ways:
+ to set association with "Set Associations" in default programs
+ registry entry is ok (as far as I can tell)
I am getting annoyed to tell everytime to choose the same program...

Also with this problem another one came.I can't set a program to open some files,so the file associations for some files is broken.For example i can't set qTorrent to open torrent files.It just won't open them and the files apear as white documents just like I hadn't had a Torrent program installed already.I find it weird that both problems appeared together.
I previously had to reinstall windows on my machine,because of this problems.It worked normal at the begging,but today these problems appeared again.I tried scanning SFC Scan with no result.
I recently found many application would not save to correct type. Some software icons would come out to a blank or white block, but those software actually there. For example, realrecorder is running, it would come out a white block on taskbar on bottom. I tried use 'access and program default' in control panel, still not fix the issue. Ms word, and word pad also come out white blank icon.

View 7 Replies View RelatedSome programs are becoming slow to load or do not recognize their connection to a file extension. Most noticeable are Nitro PDF Professional which doesn't always start when I click on a PDF file, sometimes it does, some times it doesn't. Quicken is often slow to start, some times the window opens then it waits for the display, sometimes the there is a wait until the window even opens. Same for xplorer2 opening and even selecting another folder. Going back to Windows 7 with almost the identical installed programs/utilities (about 40) the "problem" goes away.

I have tried both from my standard account and from my administrator account.
Turned the PC on this morning and all my files (audio , picture and video) now have the file type at the end of the file name so instead of cars42 it reads cars42.mpg same for all other file types, Why?
Also, had 2 new desktop icons "Desktop.ini" which open in wordpad as some directory log. But now every folder now contains a desktop.ini file some have thumbs.db file. I have not changed any file specs, it just appeared today. I have many thousand files and need them to be short for work, i don't want the added .mpg,.jpg, .mp3 etc added. Do i just system restore? How did this all happen though, Was it an update? Also, Another seperate issue my PC takes several minutes to shut down though this has happened for most of the time i've had this PC which is only 3 months.

I have win 8 when running apps in "run as administrator" and when running most of apps, windows give me this message:

I have been running this laptop as my main machine for a few months now with no problems, however, I realised I had a problem when I wanted to change some networking settings on Friday when the UAC said I needed admin privileges and wouldn't let me enter a password or click "Yes", hence not allowing me to go any further.
I went to control panel > User accounts and saw my account type has been changed to Guest.
Now I have thought long and hard and I have not changed or had any need to change my account type to guest, nor has anyone else had access to my laptop, so I can only assume this has been done in the last week or so during a Windows update.
I'll tell you what I did to try to resolve this below:
First of all I tried to enable the hidden administrator account while in my account by running command prompt as admin (and then entering net user Administrator /active:yes) but as I don't have admin privileges I couldn't even open the command prompt so I couldn't get any further.
After reading around the net and this forum I found this thread and gave it a try. After restarting the laptop and booting into safe mode I was expecting to see and Administrator account next to my account at the log in screen, however, there was only the administrator account to choose from, so I clicked it and it went through the first time initialisation of the account and then showed me the start menu, I then went to run the command prompt as admin and it worked, I entered net user Administrator /active:yes which worked with no problems. I then went to the user accounts in control panel to "Manage other accounts" but my usual account was nowhere to be found. So I thought I'd restart the laptop and see what happens out of safe mode.
When it restarted I was still only presented with the admin account, so I logged in to disable the hidden by entering net user Administrator /active:no in the command prompt run as admin and then restarted.
After restarting again I was expecting to see my account but was still presented with only the admin account, but when I clicked on it it said it was disabled and I was completely locked out of windows.
Luckily I created a restore point so I managed to restore my settings, and was back at square one.
After a bit of testing it seems my main user account is being removed when I enter safe mode, but do nothing else. Why entering safe mode is removing my account.
I am at a bit of a loss as I can't seem to activate admin privileges on my account, but if i try to fix it I lose my account completely.
How do you want to open this type of file (.psd)?I'm choosing more options and picking photoshop as the default app, but nothing is happening. The same things happens to .torrent files, only works if i have the program open and drags the file into the program.
Files it happens with:

.torrent
.mobi
And the files are blank.

I occasionally receive email attachments with a .doc extension that Windows Live Mail considers to be dangerous and has, therefore, deactivated. I recognise I can free the attachment by dragging it to the desktop or going to Home>Junk>Safety Options...>Security in Windows Live Mail and unchecking the box adjacent to 'Do not allow attachments that could potentially be a virus to be saved or opened'. However, in whatever application I try to open the file, nothing meaningful appears - it comprises hieroglyphics.

Mainly I'm interested in setting one specific folder as default for every time I right click on an image and choose save as. I'm tired of having to browse through to my images folder each and every time. It didn't used to do this until I upgraded to windows 8.1. I don't really use "libraries" as there are only two folders I use for downloads. One is for images. The other is for everything else. I don't mind having to browse to my downloads folder, just not the images folder as that is generally what I download the most since I work with graphics a lot.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI installed hamachi to create a VPN between desktop home and laptop, but I accidentally set the Hamachi Network to Public, so I cannot access from the other device, I have read that I need to enable the option to change the network type.
I have already tried by right-clicking network, but HAMACHI network doesnt appear in the list as it is a virtual device.
I am trying to figure out how i can change the cover art/icon for my DVD movies (mkv) so they dont all have the same default icon. I would like to change the icon to like a DVD cover for each movie so its easy to look through them and find the movie you want, not to mention it looks so much better.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI quite often place files on my Windows 8 desktop while im working on various stuff and have a problem with icons I cant fix, for example: I have a number of PDF files currently on my desktop and my pdf program is foxit. I DONT WANT TO CHANGE THE PROGRAM ICON, just the icons of the files it makes. I had the same issue on win7 and i know I can change folder view options to "show icons and not thumbnails" but unfortunately that screws up my image icons.
In windows 7, "types" and "nirsoft files type manager" allowed you to change the file type icon from the thumbnail to whatever icon you wanted. These 2 progs plus another I've tried don't work in win 8pro?
Although I use it mainly in desktop mode, I have had few issues with Windows 8.1 except for file explorer - it seems they've adopted the Apple approach of 'You must have it the way we want you to have it' rather than letting users configure it themselves...
Specifically,
1. I can't find how to force it to create new explorer windows at the size I want - they are always too small so I have to change each one - is there a way to do this?
2. I've managed to get it to display on opening: file/date modified/type/size in the 'details' view which is my prefered opening view, but I then have to click 'date modified' column to bring the latest up to the top - is there any way to force it to do that on opening?
3. In the 'save' box Windows now focuses on 'This PC' rather than 'Favourites', so I invariably have to scroll up to the top to see my Favourites, which includes 'Recent places' which is something I use probably 90% of the time - most of my saves and file openings are sometime I was recently working on. Is their any way to change this?
I have a directory in which I have a large number of genealogical records, 756 to be exact. The files are numbered FIN_1881_001_001 to FIN_1881_001_756.
Due to an error when saving these files, I need to change these 756 file numbers to FIN_1891_001_001 to FIN_1891_001_756.
Is there any easy way of doing this without having to change each file name individually.
So My computer has been acting up. I downloaded a "free" antivirus that turned out to be a virus. It just slows my computer up and hasn't fried anything yet, However i was able to download AVG and stop any major issues from occurring. Now I am trying to delete said "free" antivirus, yet i keep getting this message. "Need permission from SYSTEM to make any changes to this file." I have no idea what that means especially considering I am the SYSTEM as far as I am concerned with this computer. Somehow my firewall and antivirus had been disabled months ago and I know I didn't do it. This was a couple of weeks ago. Since then, I have been fighting to keep my computer alive.

Apparently it is necessary to set an association in Windows 8.1 to use Windows Mail as default MAPI application. However, for that it would be necessary to find the actual application (exe) file for Windows Mail - and I cannot find this. This file is not in the Windows Mail folder that is in the Program Files folder (see enclosed screen shot).

I want to change the File Explorer default opening location from the Libraries to 'This PC -> Desktop'. However, both 'Target' and 'Start In' fields in the File Explorer properties are greyed out.
I am an administrator, and as far as I can tell with my level of know-how, I have full permissions.
I am installing the Direct Download version of Windows 8. As it begins to setup it goes to a screen named "What needs your attention". It says "The following things need your attention before you can continue to the installation". It goes on to say "Change the folder or file name of C:users on drive C:"
It gives me an option called "Open" which takes me to this C: drive. However, I cannot change the name of C:users. Not even with administrative permission.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI transferred many music files from a backup drive onto a new laptop running Windows 8, and found most renamed as numbered files with a .ptl extension. Found out that my backup drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex) doesn't like long filenames and renames them as referenced above. ("ptl" stands for "path too long"). I have been renaming them, dumping the ptl extension to get the files back as mp3's, but I get a confirmation window that I have to click "yes" to for each and every change I attempt. I'd love to kill the confirm popup for every file I change, it doubles the time involved for each file and I have enough work just renaming the files back to their original names. I've looked all over the control panel for something to uncheck to accomplish this, with no success.
