View 5 RepliesI naturally thought that if I used File History that I would be able to get my files back from the external drive if I had to reinstall Windows8. After a HDD crash it appears that isn't the case.
13gb of Excel Spreadsheets is riding on this solution.
Old vista pc died, kept a running backup disc every sunday up until august when I bought an Toshibe ex. hard drive.I had quite a few problems transferring the Toshiba into the windows 8 pc. Made multiple copies on the hard drive darn near 250 gigs. So erased all those files and transferred the backups I had on discs. They're in my pc but I don't know how to access them/. I installed a couple apps but I still don't see anything. I want to send attachments via email and the pc wants me to create an association in the default section. There is a list a mile long which I don't understand. Do i install some kind of app or is something else not setup right....

So everytime I've go to the [Control Panel] .. Programs] ... [Make a file type always open in a specific program] It's very annoying. Is there a simple way to let me change all the files association type such as by .reg. I've tried regshot program to get certain file association change registry then import it to the registry , but with fail. As it said program is in use , forbitten ...I can't thinks of a simple way to solve this program even in the safe mode.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to open a PDF file, I always/still gets the question "How do you want to open this type of file (pdf) ?"
I tried the usual ways:
+ to set association with "Set Associations" in default programs
+ registry entry is ok (as far as I can tell)
I am getting annoyed to tell everytime to choose the same program...
On my new Windows 8 machine, every time I put an audio CD into the disk drive, the Power DVD program starts. THis is MOST ANNOYING! I want audio CDs to launch Windows Media Player so that I can rip them to the hard drive. If I go to Control Panel -> Default Programs -> Associate a File Type with a Program, there is NO LISTING in there for .cda files, which is what compact disc audio files are.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Windows 8.1 64 bit started forgetting the view settings from a folder. So if I go in a folder and I set it to List-View for example, whenever I close that folder and I reopen it the view is set automatically to Details view. And this applies to every folder in my computer except Desktop. It drives me crazy, especially in my pictures folders.
Also with this problem another one came.I can't set a program to open some files,so the file associations for some files is broken. For example i can't set qTorrent to open torrent files. It just won't open them and the files apear as white documents just like I hadn't had a Torrent program installed already.I find it weird that both problems appeared together.
I previously had to reinstall windows on my machine, because of this problems. It worked normal at the begging, but today these problems appeared again.I tried scanning SFC Scan with no result.
I recently found many application would not save to correct type. Some software icons would come out to a blank or white block, but those software actually there. For example, realrecorder is running, it would come out a white block on taskbar on bottom. I tried use 'access and program default' in control panel, still not fix the issue. Ms word, and word pad also come out white blank icon.

View 7 Replies View RelatedSome programs are becoming slow to load or do not recognize their connection to a file extension. Most noticeable are Nitro PDF Professional which doesn't always start when I click on a PDF file, sometimes it does, some times it doesn't. Quicken is often slow to start, some times the window opens then it waits for the display, sometimes the there is a wait until the window even opens. Same for xplorer2 opening and even selecting another folder. Going back to Windows 7 with almost the identical installed programs/utilities (about 40) the "problem" goes away.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy old Sony Vaio broke the other day, so I've just got a new laptop. The Vaio was Vista, but now I'm on Windows 8.
I'd been backing up my Vaio to an external harddrive, but all I ever did was run the backup and let it get on with it. So for example, within the external harddrive now it just has a list of the dates I ran a backup, followed by 'Backup files 1', 'Backup files 2' etc. I'm hoping these include some of the documents/files I had on there, but I can't be sure. What exactly will have been backed up here?
I've been trying now to restore these files on my new laptop, but I can't seem to find a way. Is it possible?
I went to go set photoshop as the default for opening a jpeg, and I noticed this weird option on the list that says %1. I don't know how to get rid of it it is very annoying. I tried cleaning the registry with CCleaner and removing "%1;" from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileAssociation. Nothing has worked so far, What is %1 anyway?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWindows 8.1 upgrade. The "universal" search sucks. Control panel -disabled BING. But when I return to the search screen, and start typing, the default remains EVERYTHING. This excludes a lot of the paths FILES looks under.
Is there any way for Win 8.1 to default your search to FILES (not Everything, which excludes a lot of your index locations)?
I oppened one DLL file with notepad by missclick , and now many games arent accepting those files , i'd like to reset them.
View 9 Replies View RelatedOn the first day I received my laptop, I went into folder options and selected to show hidden folders and show known file extensions just as I have in 7, and Vista before that.
It seems like every few times I log back into my PC, this option has changed itself and decided to hide all file extensions. The showing hidden folders option has not changed back once.
Very strange! I thought it was a registry scan that was reverting the option, but it doesn't seem to be causing the issue.
I have recently undertaken to get my pictures folder all sorted out and I have got a couple of thousand pictures there. I have been trying to make individual folders within my folder in categories so that I can sort things.
The problem is that in each of these folders I have to keep clicking on "View" and then "Extra Large" over and over again. Isn't it supposed to stay like I put it without me having to re-tell it over and over? It keeps going back to the default size of the pictures.
tiring to have to keep on re-setting the picture sizes for the hundredth time.
I'd like to add a file extension to the list given in Control Panel/Default Programs. In WinXP it was really easy but I hardly needed to use it as there seemed to be a lot more extensions available anyway back then. Unbelievably, (well, to me anyway), MS seem to have omitted '.flac'. How do I go about it?

My laptop is defaulting e-mail attachments and most programs to open in windows picture viewer, and if it isn't a picture I am unable to view the file without saving it and selecting 'open with'
How I can just get it to open in the appropriate program first time?
I have Windows 8.1 and just noticed this behaviour after reinstalling Adobe Acrobat Pro XI. Say I have a document called A.pdf. I want to rename the file so I right-click, click rename, and type B.pdf. The file still appears in the folder as A.pdf and when I double-click it to open it, I get an error from Acrobat: "There was an error opening this document."
This only happens with PDFs, not with DOCs or TXTs.
how to set a particular folder as the default location for a specific file type, or, in the event that's not possible, just set it as the default location for all file types. Mainly I'm interested in setting one specific folder as default for every time I right click on an image and choose save as. I'm tired of having to browse through to my images folder each and every time. It didn't used to do this until I upgraded to windows 8.1. I don't really use "libraries" as there are only two folders I use for downloads. One is for images. The other is for everything else. I don't mind having to browse to my downloads folder, just not the images folder as that is generally what I download the most since I work with graphics a lot.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to change the default for this message box so that next time I hit enter without reading what the message says I don't lose my work?
I just did this rather foolishly and it would be nice if the default was to save the recovered files not to delete them.
A friend of mine is using the default Windows Mail as email client in Windows 8.1.
He is also using LibreOffice as word processing application and gets always an error message when he tries to use the "Send As Email" option from within a LibreOffice document. Apparently it is necessary to set an association in Windows 8.1 to use Windows Mail as default MAPI application. However, for that it would be necessary to find the actual application (exe) file for Windows Mail - and I cannot find this. This file is not in the Windows Mail folder that is in the Program Files folder (see enclosed screen shot).
Is it possible to create a MAPI association for Windows Mail in Windows 8.1 or could it be that Windows Mail is not a MAPI application?
Where I can find the Windows Mail application (exe) file?

I have a load of DVD's with classic TV episodes on them - the DVD's are broken down into the TV episodes. I'm getting away from physical DVD's now and want to store these on HDD's as playable streamable multi-media on a variety of devices including Android phone. The .ISO format won't play on Android phones.
When I try and use something like HANDBRAKE to rip the DVD I always end up with ONE BIG file == is there any software around that will rip the DVD into Episode1.avi, Episode2.avi etc (or mk4/mp4).
This normally isn't a problem if I'm ripping a MOVIE but for TV shows I'd like to keep the rip in the same style as the TV episodes.
(Note I've already decrypted and de-regionized the DVD and it's mounted as a Virtual ISO that Windows can handle automatically).
There just doesn't seem to be ANY software around that can do this easily -- it must be possible --you only have to look at the TV section of some torrent sites to see tha people DO manage to split the series up into episodes.
I recently received a restore usb for windows 8 from dell and had some trouble.
When I tried to repair the operating system with the usb restore, this it what happened.
I was given the following options- off the USB restore
1-refresh
2- system restore
3- repair
4- Re-install windows 8
After trying to 1-3 first to repair the OS, all denied being able to fix.Sometimes I would get these messages-
1-Volume Locked.
2-A required drive partition is missing.
3- windowssystem32winload.efi is missing or corrupt.
After I re-installed windows 8, I see the following partitions.
1- c: re-install windows 8 - 404gig of 418gig(currently done)
2- d: corrupt windows 8 , but all the system files are still there 45 gig of which 38 gig is used by the previous corrupt OS ( but all the files are still there).
My question is , is there any way to fix or restore the corrupt previous OS ?
The reason I want try restore previous OS is because I had activated windows , had all the dell drivers installed and had the antivirus, installed.should I try to rename C:- D and D:- C to see what happens ?
