View 1 Replies View RelatedI ran into a minor problem with Acronis True Image 2014 after letting Microsoft install Update 1 on my system. For some reason the desktop Icons go blank for ~15 seconds when I boot. As soon as I uninstall TI the problem goes away. The problem also seems to go away if I "turn off" Auto Logon to my Microsoft Account. Base on all my Acronis Forum discussions I must be the only person in the world with this problem! The stand alone version of TI 2014 works OK. I will continue to use the standalone version of TI 2014 to backup the system (Boot Partition) periodically since I know it works and has saved me from disaster numerous times.
So...I'm ready to let Windows 8.1 handle my data backups using the File History function. Dumb question - if I do a system restore because of a virus or whatever will Windows 8.1 be able to use the file history maintained by the version of Windows 8.1 that was wiped out by the restore? The file history will be on a separate disk drive.
Does file history also create a restore point?
It was nice to have that restore point to where is you blue screened you could reboot and restore to a recent, previous system state.
Doesn't really say anything in the file history settings page, and I'm curious.
On the first day I received my laptop, I went into folder options and selected to show hidden folders and show known file extensions just as I have in 7, and Vista before that.
It seems like every few times I log back into my PC, this option has changed itself and decided to hide all file extensions. The showing hidden folders option has not changed back once.
Very strange! I thought it was a registry scan that was reverting the option, but it doesn't seem to be causing the issue.
I have accidently changed the default file association for cursor files. I am running Windows 8

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'd like to add a file extension to the list given in Control Panel/Default Programs. In WinXP it was really easy but I hardly needed to use it as there seemed to be a lot more extensions available anyway back then. Unbelievably, (well, to me anyway), MS seem to have omitted '.flac'. How do I go about it?

I have Windows 8.1 and just noticed this behaviour after reinstalling Adobe Acrobat Pro XI. Say I have a document called A.pdf. I want to rename the file so I right-click, click rename, and type B.pdf. The file still appears in the folder as A.pdf and when I double-click it to open it, I get an error from Acrobat: "There was an error opening this document."
This only happens with PDFs, not with DOCs or TXTs.
how to set a particular folder as the default location for a specific file type, or, in the event that's not possible, just set it as the default location for all file types. Mainly I'm interested in setting one specific folder as default for every time I right click on an image and choose save as. I'm tired of having to browse through to my images folder each and every time. It didn't used to do this until I upgraded to windows 8.1. I don't really use "libraries" as there are only two folders I use for downloads. One is for images. The other is for everything else. I don't mind having to browse to my downloads folder, just not the images folder as that is generally what I download the most since I work with graphics a lot.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have file history set up and running to an external hard drive, happily saving each version of any changed or new data files in the various libraries. I am able to go back and recover older versions of edited or deleted files. All of this I think I have a handle on.
OK, now imagine that one day my hard drive grinds it's heads into the platters, dying a fast death with no recovery possible. I buy a new drive and restore Windows 8 to the way it was when I first got my computer using the saved system restore I have on a USB drive (My PC is an Acer Aspire M5 481PT-6644). So far so good.
Here is my question: how do I re-link this new installation to the existing File History database on the external drive so that I can restore my precious data?
System Restore did not complete successfully.. System restore failed to extract the file..
I turned off AVG self protection...but nothing works fine...
I have build a new pc, went to turn on File History and set it up and it began to restore from an old build. It is not restoring (and i don't need it too) but it is stuck. It won't turn off, or finish or fail. Been weeks now.
The location does exist, but regardless, I have deleted the files already.
how to force it to be clean config w/o re-installing Windows?
Since Windows 8 is not creating System Restore points, apparently because I have a dual boot Windows 8 / Windows 7 setup, I'd like to schedule one every 3-4 days or so.
Is there any way to run system restore from Command line or batch file or Powershell? If so then I could schedule it to run when I want.
Any way to get rid of Metro appz which come with Win8 directly working with Dism. Also it's possible to restore standard file associations so that pictures open with Image viewer without switching to Metro UI.
Note: c: est contains my offline image.
Code:
dism /image:c: est /Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage /PackageName:Microsoft.BingFinance_1.2.0.135_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe
dism /image:c: est /Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage /PackageName:Microsoft.BingMaps_1.2.0.136_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe
[Code] .....
To fix associations, save this XML as "AppAssoc.xml":
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<DefaultAssociations>
<Association Identifier=".bmp" ProgId="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Bitmap" ApplicationName="Windows Photo Viewer" />
<Association Identifier=".dib" ProgId="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Bitmap" ApplicationName="Windows Photo Viewer" />
[Code] .....
And then:
Code:
dism /image:c: est /Remove-DefaultAppAssociations
dism /image:c: est /import-DefaultAppAssociations:C:AppAssoc.xml

I tried cleaning the registry with CCleaner and removing "%1;" from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileAssociation. Nothing has worked so far, What is %1 anyway?

I upgraded from Win 7 to 8 Pro and transferred settings so win 7 file recovery was already active, when I tried to turn on win 8 file recovery I got a message saying I cant because win 7 FR was active. So I deactivated win 7 FR then activated win 8 FR, for giggles I went back and turned on win 7 FR and it worked. Now I have both active, from what I have read this was not possible. Did I break my OS or am I just lucky?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn Windows 8.0 File History, it had the nasty habit of duplicating your library files on your backup ( in my case, my external USB backup drive ( Replica 2 Terabyte ). By DUPLICATING, I mean they get copied over and over and over again... This happens to ALL of them, even though you have not touched the majority of them for YEARS. (File History is suppose to copy them over the FIRST time, then copy a new copy with a new name (old name plus date) if you edit the file in any way). I turned of file indexing on ALL my drives, except my C: drive, to see if that would stop it ( this is recommended in many threads on other sites ).
