Can Create System Restore Point From Batch File Or Powershell?
Nov 9, 2012
Since Windows 8 is not creating System Restore points, apparently because I have a dual boot Windows 8 / Windows 7 setup, I'd like to schedule one every 3-4 days or so.
Is there any way to run system restore from Command line or batch file or Powershell? If so then I could schedule it to run when I want.
I have read several times now that system restore creates a daily automatic restore point, I had a script to do this in 7 and I added it to win 8 , now I am thinking I don't need it.
I would guess it does it at start up. Having looked at the restore points going back to the 6th when i first got this laptop i dont see any instant restore points that look to have been created automatically(daily), and I don't see points for each software installed either (i read it does this also) as its a new laptop I have installed quite a few things and there ought to be quite a few restore points if this is the case.
I have no system protection tab in System Properties box, hence I cannot create a restore point. Looking for the answer to get this tab enabled or reinstalled. I am logging in with Admin rights.
- Changed name to Connec8 - Compiled as exe. This is for the sole purpose to force Administrator privileges on double click - New icon - Administrator privilege check on startup. - Added option to restart the previous hotspot - Implemented an easier way to enable Internet sharing - Added blank lines for better readability

Windows 8 is awesome. However it doesn't have the ability to create ad-hoc networks from Network and sharing center. The only way is to use netsh utility from CMD every time you want to start or stop your network. .
So I created a batch file to automate this process. All you have to do is to start it as administrator, follow the instructions and voila!. No need to open cmd again and again
This utility creates an adhoc network. You can use it for streaming Videos and Music or playing LAN games.
For Internet sharing aka Hotspot Go to Network and Sharing Center –> Change adapter settings Right click on the device which is connected to internet and select Proerties Now, open Sharing tab, enable Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection, and then choose the newly created ad-hoc connection from the list
I have a new Windows 8 hp pavilion all in one desktop computer and since a windows refresh, a month ago, it has stopped creating restore points and it fails to manually create a restore point also.
It leaves a message "THE RESTORE POINT COULD NOT BE CREATED FOR THE FOLLOWING REASON: ACCESS IS DENIED. (0x80070005)".
I have allotted 15% or 66.67 GB for this feature in the "configure" option. The C: drive is the only drive marked as "ON" to be restored. The only restore point listed is for a WinZip 17 installation on the day of the windows refresh, which was as I said before, a month ago. The are no other restore points at all and can't create one.
I would like to automatically create a restore point everytime I shut my computer down. I have had no success with TASK SCHEDULER (which could easily mean I'm doing something wrong). Heard of/ Use any 3rd party software for this?
I have had a Dell Inspiron 3520 for 3 weeks now. It has had 2 Windows Updates in that time. Both times I lost Internet connection and any way of connecting. The connection bar for the wi-fi was on, connection good but no Internet. After a lot of chat with Dell I did a System restore to Factory settings the first time (16 days ago). I also did a restore point once I'd re-set everything up again.
2 days ago the same thing happened after a Windows update and I also could not locate the restore point so it was back to Factory settings.
I accidentally set the file open of .bat files to Notepad. From a link in this forum (How to Restore Default File Extension Type Associations in Windows 8 and 8.1)was able to reset the registry back I think. The bat file not longer asks for notepad but instead opens "How do you want to open this file" and ask me to look for an app. The batch files still do not run.
I'm trying to create a NETSH batch file that sets my TCP/IP settings to DHCP.
The line I want to use is:
netsh interface ipv4 set address name="My Custom Named Network" dhcp
If I run the global cmd prompt and paste this line, it works as intended. However, if I create a batch file with the same line, I get "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect".This is bugging me plenty.
I was browsing around and attempting to build a program with MS-DOS. I can't get the choice command to work in Windows 8, and I have browsed the internet searching for the problem and a solution. It seems that Microsoft has removed Choice from Windows 8 supported commands. Is there any way possible I can make this work? I also own a Windows XP desktop and I can make the codes on it, but I can't get them to run on Windows 8?
I read one online article that said to "click the Windows 8 start button", and I gave up on that article. I can't figure out how to set a restore point with Windows 8.
I was also told that I needed to "enable security". I would have thought that would have been enabled automatically, but I guess not.
I was trying to install Kali linux as a partition on my windows 8, and was using EasyBCD to add Kali linux to the boot entry. Somehow I ended up deleting the Windows 8 boot entry, not deleting the Windows 8 drive but deleting the boot entry meaning I can't boot into it. I have tried MANY MANY MANY solutions to fix it. I've tried using a recovery disk but that just shows the windows logo and reboots and reboots and does the same stuff.
Eventually I just gave up and thought I'm just gonna get rid of this windows 8 which by the way came pre-install with my Toshiba L855-149, and just install windows 7. Of course I NEEDED my files so just an hour ago, I removed the hard drive from the laptop, put it into HDD Docking thing I have which allows me to add the hard drive as an external drive to my other win7 desktop PC. I started copying all my files which I am still doing now. I was thinking is there a way to make some sort of restore point from the hard drive or something? Is there another way to boot up windows 8?
Cannot create a Restore Point. I try thru Control Panel -> System and Security -> System -> System Protection.
No available drives show under Protection Settings.
When I try to launch thru System Config -> System Restore, a pop-up tells me Starting System restore, but that just hangs there forever. I have to stop it in Task Manager.
I have tried sfc - no reported problems.
Malwarebytes Pro and anti-virus report no problems.
I have created two disk images. I deleted the first one but in the restore point pop up the title is still here (but is empty!!! The red one.) How can delete it????
I need some info re creating restore points. In the HP Support Assistant, under updates and tune-up-change tune-up tasks, should the "set restore point" be turned on to "yes" when a tune-up is scheduled? I understand that windows 8.1 automatically sets restore points, but I don't know how or when or where the restore point info is stored. Is the HP Support Assistant "set restore points" the actual method used by Microsoft or an additional option?
Considering the issue with Windows 8 restore points getting deleted, I decided to use Task Manager to create a new one weekly. The problem is that if I do not boot into another partition or manually delete the old restore point, they are going to pile up. Is there a way in Task Manager to delete the old restore point before creating a new one?
After transferring my files using Windows 8 easy file transfer to my new laptop, how do I tell the new laptop where my documents are? The are in OS(CusersBobDocuments)...
I am trying to create a system image backup and I keep getting this error message
[COLOR=#FF0000]'Threre is not enough disk space to create the volum shadow copy on storage location. Make sure that for all volume to be backup up, the minimum disk space required for shadow copy creation is available. this applies to both the backup storage destination and volume included in the backup. Recommended at least 1 gigabytes free of disk space on each volumes if volumes size is more than 1 gigabytes (0x80780119)"
I am backing it up to a external HDD with over a tb of free space but I understand its not letting me perform the backup because the hidden 100mb hidden system partition is full...if i create a larger partition how can I copy that system partition to it? if that is possible....
Since the upgrade to Windows 8.1 I have a very strange issue with the Windows Powershell (and only withg the Powershell). I occurs both on my Surface Pro 2 as well as on my desktop computer.
General information: On my Surface Pro 2 the screensize option is set to 150% (standard on the Surface Pro 2). On my desktop computer I've set the screensize option to 125% (my eyes are very bad ).
The case: When I open Windows Powershell (normal and admin) it opens and looks normal for about a second or two. Then the screen shrinks to a very small and unreadable size. See the screendump ==>
The tryouts: First I ran the SFC/ Scannow and DISM commands. They came out clean. On my desktop I also did a complete full new installation (was needed anyway ). This didn't work though.
Setting the screensize option to 100%. That way the Powershell window doesn't shrink.
Conclusion: It looks like the Powershell cannot cope with the screensize option being anything else then 100%. The funny thing is though that under Windows 8.0 this problem does not occur.
My question: Is this a bug in Windows 8.1 that Microsoft needs to fix?
Dumb question - if I panic and have to do a system restore or system reset using the install DVD for Windows 8 what will happen to the Windows 8.1 version I just downloaded and installed?
How create a repair rescue disk Windows 8 to restore Registry ONLY?
''Have a new HP Envy 15t-J100. Has a Recovery Partition. I created a Boot USB stick. Fine
I recall with other Windows versions & and such you could create a repair/rescue CD that basically allowed you to restore your settings to an earlier Registry Restore Point.
Will the Recovery Manager (on USB) do this as well?
The attrib +s +h command that is used to make a file a system and hidden file is no longer working. When i try to use the command on a folder, the folder just shows up as a normal hidden folder which can be easily viewed using show hidden items in view option. It looks as if every system file is not recognizing itself as a system file.
Also every folder in my system has appeared a desktop.ini and thumbs.db folder.
