Maintenance :: Windows 8 HP Pavilion - Cannot Create Restore Point
Jan 9, 2013
I have a new Windows 8 hp pavilion all in one desktop computer and since a windows refresh, a month ago, it has stopped creating restore points and it fails to manually create a restore point also.
It leaves a message "THE RESTORE POINT COULD NOT BE CREATED FOR THE FOLLOWING REASON: ACCESS IS DENIED. (0x80070005)".
I have allotted 15% or 66.67 GB for this feature in the "configure" option. The C: drive is the only drive marked as "ON" to be restored. The only restore point listed is for a WinZip 17 installation on the day of the windows refresh, which was as I said before, a month ago. The are no other restore points at all and can't create one.

I have read several times now that system restore creates a daily automatic restore point, I had a script to do this in 7 and I added it to win 8 , now I am thinking I don't need it.
I would guess it does it at start up. Having looked at the restore points going back to the 6th when i first got this laptop i dont see any instant restore points that look to have been created automatically(daily), and I don't see points for each software installed either (i read it does this also) as its a new laptop I have installed quite a few things and there ought to be quite a few restore points if this is the case.

I have no system protection tab in System Properties box, hence I cannot create a restore point. Looking for the answer to get this tab enabled or reinstalled. I am logging in with Admin rights.

Does file history also create a restore point?
It was nice to have that restore point to where is you blue screened you could reboot and restore to a recent, previous system state.
Doesn't really say anything in the file history settings page, and I'm curious.

Since Windows 8 is not creating System Restore points, apparently because I have a dual boot Windows 8 / Windows 7 setup, I'd like to schedule one every 3-4 days or so.
Is there any way to run system restore from Command line or batch file or Powershell? If so then I could schedule it to run when I want.

I would like to automatically create a restore point everytime I shut my computer down. I have had no success with TASK SCHEDULER (which could easily mean I'm doing something wrong). Heard of/ Use any 3rd party software for this?

I need some info re creating restore points. In the HP Support Assistant, under updates and tune-up-change tune-up tasks, should the "set restore point" be turned on to "yes" when a tune-up is scheduled? I understand that windows 8.1 automatically sets restore points, but I don't know how or when or where the restore point info is stored. Is the HP Support Assistant "set restore points" the actual method used by Microsoft or an additional option?

Considering the issue with Windows 8 restore points getting deleted, I decided to use Task Manager to create a new one weekly. The problem is that if I do not boot into another partition or manually delete the old restore point, they are going to pile up. Is there a way in Task Manager to delete the old restore point before creating a new one?

I was trying to install Kali linux as a partition on my windows 8, and was using EasyBCD to add Kali linux to the boot entry. Somehow I ended up deleting the Windows 8 boot entry, not deleting the Windows 8 drive but deleting the boot entry meaning I can't boot into it. I have tried MANY MANY MANY solutions to fix it. I've tried using a recovery disk but that just shows the windows logo and reboots and reboots and does the same stuff.
Eventually I just gave up and thought I'm just gonna get rid of this windows 8 which by the way came pre-install with my Toshiba L855-149, and just install windows 7. Of course I NEEDED my files so just an hour ago, I removed the hard drive from the laptop, put it into HDD Docking thing I have which allows me to add the hard drive as an external drive to my other win7 desktop PC. I started copying all my files which I am still doing now. I was thinking is there a way to make some sort of restore point from the hard drive or something? Is there another way to boot up windows 8?

I have a HP Pavillion x360 i3 2 in 1 laptop. I am having problems with the wifi staying connected, and when the laptop is connected to wifi the internet speeds are slow. The speeds are slow as in I cannot stream videos on youtube without constant pausing, and even downloading something as simple as google chrome takes much longer than it is supposed to. In my house there are plenty of other devices that are connected including my old laptop, which, has no problems downloading/streaming and iphones, and an ipad.
All of the other devices except my new HP laptop has no problem streaming and downloading. The laptop is extremely new;less than a week old. I have tried updating the network driver, resetting the network driver, and disconnecting then reconnecting the wifi; yet the problem keeps occurring. I do have MacAfee so I guess that could pose a problem, but I am unsure. The adapter I use is a Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565, with internet provided by COMCAST. It could be an adapter problem, but because of the other devices working fine I do not think that the problem is from the adapter. Also, the OS is Windows 8.1...

Cannot create a Restore Point. I try thru Control Panel -> System and Security -> System -> System Protection.
No available drives show under Protection Settings.
When I try to launch thru System Config -> System Restore, a pop-up tells me Starting System restore, but that just hangs there forever. I have to stop it in Task Manager.
I have tried sfc - no reported problems.
Malwarebytes Pro and anti-virus report no problems.
Windows update service is auto - running
Volume Shadow copy is manual - running
Dell diagnostic program reports no error.
Dell XPS 8500 Windows 8 Pro.

I want to try the 8.1 update on my XPS 15, but I'm not sure if everything will work flawlessly.
Just in case something goes wrong, I want to switch back to 8.
So, is it possible to "downgrade" using a system restore point (from Windows 8)?

I am unable to create any restore point, having tried every suggestion I found on the net.
How can I reinstall the restore point creator?
The file "sr.inf" mysteriously disappeared from my system.

I read one online article that said to "click the Windows 8 start button", and I gave up on that article. I can't figure out how to set a restore point with Windows 8.
I was also told that I needed to "enable security". I would have thought that would have been enabled automatically, but I guess not.

Is it true that windows 7 and 8 will automatically create a restore point after 7 days if none were created manually?
I know from experience that previous versions of windows will create a restore point after 24 hrs.

I have had a Dell Inspiron 3520 for 3 weeks now. It has had 2 Windows Updates in that time. Both times I lost Internet connection and any way of connecting. The connection bar for the wi-fi was on, connection good but no Internet. After a lot of chat with Dell I did a System restore to Factory settings the first time (16 days ago). I also did a restore point once I'd re-set everything up again.
2 days ago the same thing happened after a Windows update and I also could not locate the restore point so it was back to Factory settings.

I also have a Dell desktop Windows 8.1 that I can use to to create a USB restore image, can I use a restore image from a desktop to fix a laptop?

I have a Pavillion DM3 that I have updated to Windows 8 Pro. I have left the Win7 Home on as well and have a dual boot that I was going to keep until I was happy with Windows 8.
Windows 8 installed OK on a new partition and ran very well. I loaded some other software like Office and Acrobat, and it still started and ran very well. I then let it apply the Windows and Office updates (about 70 items). It then took about 10mins to boot. Thinking I had corrupted something, I tried the auto repair, but that didn't work, so I tried refresh and rebuilt the Win 8.
I reinstall all the items I had installed previously, and applied the updates again, but exactly the same problem - very slow to boot. I have now reverted to Win7 again, and it is all working fine again. I have left the HP System partition unchanged, and as the active drive. I did try various boot rebuilds but that didn't work either.
There must be something in the updates that causes this but I don't know how to find out what.

How create a repair rescue disk Windows 8 to restore Registry ONLY?
''Have a new HP Envy 15t-J100. Has a Recovery Partition. I created a Boot USB stick. Fine
I recall with other Windows versions & and such you could create a repair/rescue CD that basically allowed you to restore your settings to an earlier Registry Restore Point.
Will the Recovery Manager (on USB) do this as well?

A couple of days ago, my HP Pavilion g7-2233cl laptop, running Windows 8, started looping at startup. I shot a brief video showing a few loops and posted it on YouTube: [URL] ....
Because of the looping, I am unable to input any commands through my keyboard or mouse once the looping starts. So, for example, I cannot get to Control Panel.
I was, however, able to click on Escape during a startup and run a hardware diagnostic. No hardware problems were found.
Sometimes, after looping for quite a while, the computer freezes up. It stops looping but then won't let me do anything else either.
This problem does NOT seem the same as the "Automatic Repair" issue I have seen described on YouTube. By the way, I also have Windows 8 running on a desktop computer.

The power options on my computer have stopped working. The screen does not dim or turn off automatically and the computer does not sleep automatically.
I bought my HP Pavilion 20 all in one desktop two weeks ago and then power options stopped working a week ago everything else seems OK. I looked in the console and "balance" is checked, going further, all the times are set (display dimmed 5 mins, turn off display 10 mins, put computer to sleep 30 mins). A day or so before this happened I replaced the standard (rather cheap) wired keyboard and mouse with a Logitech k360 Keyboard and m326 mouse (both wireless).
I can put the computer to sleep using the keyboards sleep button. I also temporarily changed the "Put Computer to Sleep" section in Power Options console to "never" when "Windows Photo Gallery" needed to update the face recondition on my photos transferred from my old computer (it took over 24 hours). After "Windows Photo Gallery" had finished I changed it back to 30 mins and since then no power options.

I bought an Acer notebook with Windows 8 SL (Single Language) and UEFI BIOS (with Secure Boot) factory installed (Windows Key is set in Bios).
I have the habit of installing all programs and make an image of partition C: in case of having to reinstall the entire system for problems with Windows, HDD exchange or similar cases. With this gain too long and not have to reinstall all the programs one by one.
My HDD is partitioned into 4 parts: C:, E:, F: and G:.
When I enter the Windows 8 app to generate the system image appear two partitions pre-marked for backup: C: (Programs) and EFI System Partition (no drive letter). C: partition is formatted as NTFS, but the EFI is as FAT32.
My question is: when I restore this, how should I format the partition where you install the system again (C ? Format all the partition as NTFS and Backup app creates the EFI partition FAT32 by own?
How it works and how to proceed? I will boot the system by CD-ROM.

I recently bought a Dell Windows 8 desktop. I upgraded the desktop to Windows 8.1. I want to create a recovery drive using a DVD rather than a flash drive. (I understand Microsoft wants you to create recovery onto a flash drive rather than a DVD. Not sure why.)
I found several places on the net which discuss just how create recover onto a DVD. They suggest that I do a search on "Windows 7 file" and this will display an option to click on "Windows 7 File Recovery" ... and that will lead me through the steps to create my recovery onto a DVD.
Problem is "Windows 7 File" is not found. How do I get this onto my Windows 8.1 system?

I thought 8.1 was supposed to make things easier? Not so for creating a System Image. Now, you have to use the Windows PowerShell (Admin) to get the job done. The image below will show the command string to use (boxed in red) and my target drive is/was Z:

Zoom image to enlarge.
You can use your installation media to access the Repair function and restore your System Image from there.

When I wanted to fix my Windows 8.1 because it wouldn't start, I saw ALL my restore points had disappeared. This has happened to me with all Windows operating systems I've had: Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and perhaps XP. When I need them most, they're gone, ALL OF THEM (not only those replaced for newer ones).
Last time this happened, Windows 8.1 eventually fixed my system by applying "attempting repairs" (however this fix is called, it's an option when 8.1 cannot boot).
But why do the restore points disappear in Windows 7, 8 and 8.1? Can I save at least one to a disk or something? Instead of creating a system image, which is heavy and slow?.
