Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 - Microsoft Restore Point In HP Support Assistant

May 13, 2014

I need some info re creating restore points. In the HP Support Assistant, under updates and tune-up-change tune-up tasks, should the "set restore point" be turned on to "yes" when a tune-up is scheduled? I understand that windows 8.1 automatically sets restore points, but I don't know how or when or where the restore point info is stored. Is the HP Support Assistant "set restore points" the actual method used by Microsoft or an additional option?

Maintenance :: Windows 8 HP Pavilion - Cannot Create Restore Point

Jan 9, 2013

I have a new Windows 8 hp pavilion all in one desktop computer and since a windows refresh, a month ago, it has stopped creating restore points and it fails to manually create a restore point also.

It leaves a message "THE RESTORE POINT COULD NOT BE CREATED FOR THE FOLLOWING REASON: ACCESS IS DENIED. (0x80070005)".

I have allotted 15% or 66.67 GB for this feature in the "configure" option. The C: drive is the only drive marked as "ON" to be restored. The only restore point listed is for a WinZip 17 installation on the day of the windows refresh, which was as I said before, a month ago. The are no other restore points at all and can't create one.

Maintenance :: Windows 8 Task Manager Deleting Old Restore Point

Mar 24, 2013

Considering the issue with Windows 8 restore points getting deleted, I decided to use Task Manager to create a new one weekly. The problem is that if I do not boot into another partition or manually delete the old restore point, they are going to pile up. Is there a way in Task Manager to delete the old restore point before creating a new one?

Maintenance :: Making Restore Point From External Drive

Jul 18, 2013

I was trying to install Kali linux as a partition on my windows 8, and was using EasyBCD to add Kali linux to the boot entry. Somehow I ended up deleting the Windows 8 boot entry, not deleting the Windows 8 drive but deleting the boot entry meaning I can't boot into it. I have tried MANY MANY MANY solutions to fix it. I've tried using a recovery disk but that just shows the windows logo and reboots and reboots and does the same stuff.

Eventually I just gave up and thought I'm just gonna get rid of this windows 8 which by the way came pre-install with my Toshiba L855-149, and just install windows 7. Of course I NEEDED my files so just an hour ago, I removed the hard drive from the laptop, put it into HDD Docking thing I have which allows me to add the hard drive as an external drive to my other win7 desktop PC. I started copying all my files which I am still doing now. I was thinking is there a way to make some sort of restore point from the hard drive or something? Is there another way to boot up windows 8?

Maintenance :: When Does System Restore Create Daily Automatic Point

Mar 13, 2013

I have read several times now that system restore creates a daily automatic restore point, I had a script to do this in 7 and I added it to win 8 , now I am thinking I don't need it.

I would guess it does it at start up. Having looked at the restore points going back to the 6th when i first got this laptop i dont see any instant restore points that look to have been created automatically(daily), and I don't see points for each software installed either (i read it does this also) as its a new laptop I have installed quite a few things and there ought to be quite a few restore points if this is the case.

It was nice to have that restore point to where is you blue screened you could reboot and restore to a recent, previous system state.

Doesn't really say anything in the file history settings page, and I'm curious.

Dell :: XPS 8500 - Restore Point Does Not Work With Windows 8 Pro

Feb 16, 2013

Cannot create a Restore Point.  I try thru Control Panel -> System and Security -> System -> System Protection.

No available drives show under Protection Settings.

When I try to launch thru System Config -> System Restore, a pop-up tells me Starting System restore, but that just hangs there forever.  I have to stop it in Task Manager.

I have tried sfc - no reported problems.

Malwarebytes Pro and anti-virus report no problems.

Windows update service is auto - running

Volume Shadow copy is manual - running

Dell diagnostic program reports no error.

Dell Inspiron 3520 - Losing Internet And System Restore Point After Updates

Dec 17, 2012

I have had a Dell Inspiron 3520 for 3 weeks now. It has had 2 Windows Updates in that time. Both times I lost Internet connection and any way of connecting. The connection bar for the wi-fi was on, connection good but no Internet. After a lot of chat with Dell I did a System restore to Factory settings the first time (16 days ago). I also did a restore point once I'd re-set everything up again.

2 days ago the same thing happened after a Windows update and I also could not locate the restore point so it was back to Factory settings.

Maintenance :: Imaging Apps That Support UEFI / GPT And Secure Boot?

Mar 3, 2013

I have a paid for version of Acronis True Image Home 2010 that I have used for years with my Windows 7 box and it's been good.

I've also used Macrium Reflect Free, and today I tend to use AOMEI ddata backuper as it's free for personal and commercial use.

I have a new Dell laptop (with Windows 8), and thus far I have disabled the UEFI boot options and Secure Boot and use a classic setup. However, if I wanted to have a play with these other options to see what impact they would have on system performance, which of these drive imaging software packages would work?

I also have a desktop at work with all of these options (and that's likely where I will experiment). On that box, it's simple to drop in a test hard drive and whack away until I get it working. My laptop has an msata drive and I don't have any spares of these drives lying around.

Virtualization :: Windows 8.1 - Can't Get Rid Of Program Compatibility Assistant

Jul 16, 2014

I'm trying to set up Virtual PC 2007 SP1 on Windows 8.1 Pro with Update.

By default, the Program Compatibility Assistant blocks this with the following notice:

The easy way to get around this is to rename the installer and then rename the main EXE that gets installed. There are a few other tricks (including replacing VMM.sys) and then it works. However, the EXE rename appears to be affecting my ability to double-click on a VM to start it so I thought it would be nice to just disable PCA altogether so I don't have to rename the EXE. Following the various instructions (including some from Microsoft), I haven't been able to disable PCA. Specifically, I have:

1) Attempted to create an EXE exclusion by editing the registry and creating a REG_MULTI_SZ value called "ExecutablesToExclude" with the full path to the Virtual PC.exe excutable in the following registry locations:- HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionAppCompatFlagsCompatibility Assistant- HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionCompatibility Assistant

2) Changed the following Group Policy settings:- Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Application Compatibility:Enabled "Turn off Application Compatibility Engine"Enabled "Turn off Program Compatibility Assistant"- User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Application CompatibilityEnabled "Turn off Program Compatibility Assistant"

3) Stopped and disabled the following services:- Application Experience- Diagnostic Policy Service- Program Compatibility Assistance Service

Despite doing all of this, I keep getting the error popup above. It keeps coming back from the dead like {insert your favorite horror movie villain here}.

In the Event Viewer logs, I also see a "Critical" error (event ID 2) from source "ApplicationExperienceInfrastucture" that says "The application (Virtual PC 2007 SP1, from vendor Microsoft) was hard-blocked and raised the following: Virtual PC 2007 SP1 is not supported on this version of Windows. For more information, contact Microsoft."

I'm guessing that Microsoft changed PCA in the Windows 8.1 Update but hasn't documented the changes yet. How to fully disable PCA?

Can't Turn Off Program Compatibility Assistant

Feb 22, 2014

I'm in need of installing IntelliType 6.x to be able to use all functions of my Microsoft Office Keyboard, but the Program Compatibility Assistant doesn't let me, even though I've correctly set the policy rules (as described here) and even turned off the Diagnostic Policy Service.

The only options I have is "get help online", which tells me that I should download the latest version, and "close" which doesn't run the installer at all.

I understand the program might not work, but Microsoft should at least allow people to bypass their "Let Microsoft decide for you" BS (which I've met like six billion times by now) and let the idiots (i.e. me) take the risk of ruining their computer if they want to.

With that said, you can create an auto-login process, using your Microsoft account, so you can bypass the requirement to manually type a password. This bypass is only recommended for those who maintain their PC/Laptop in a secure environment:

Maintenance :: Restore Points Disappear In Windows 8.1 / 8 / 7

Nov 19, 2013

When I wanted to fix my Windows 8.1 because it wouldn't start, I saw ALL my restore points had disappeared. This has happened to me with all Windows operating systems I've had: Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and perhaps XP. When I need them most, they're gone, ALL OF THEM (not only those replaced for newer ones).

Last time this happened, Windows 8.1 eventually fixed my system by applying "attempting repairs" (however this fix is called, it's an option when 8.1 cannot boot).

But why do the restore points disappear in Windows 7, 8 and 8.1? Can I save at least one to a disk or something? Instead of creating a system image, which is heavy and slow?.

Maintenance :: Using Windows 7 Image To Restore Certain Drive

My question: If i create a system image of C: and D:, would it be possible to just restore the D: portion of the image, or do I have to restore both, then delete the second C: on the new drive? i do not have the resources or courage to test this on my system now because I am not sure what this reformat, and with my luck, the drive would die during the restore.

Maintenance :: Cannot Restore Windows 8.1 System Image

Mar 28, 2014

I made a system image from Windows 8.1 using Windows' own system image feature. I seem to be unable to restore it. I booted with the Windows 8 disc, and told it to restore from a system image. It found the image, ran a few minutes, then failed because of version mismatch (?). Not before hosing the entire system, by the way. Luckily, I was well backed up.

I booted with the Windows 7 disc, and it didn't even see the system image (on my external HD). It saw my Windows 7 system image and restored it just fine, and here I am.

Anyway, is there some trick to restoring a Windows 8.1 system image? I am not running Windows 8.1, so I can't generate a repair disk that way. Is there one available online somewhere for download?
