Maintenance :: Stuck In Automatic Repair Loop - System Restore Not Working
May 12, 2014My Toshiba laptop/Windows 8.1 installed a VLC Media player & Malware bytes today. I was instructed to Restart as 'drivers not working properly' & since then have been on the Automatic Repair loop. It says it cannot fix it - log file: C:WINDOWSSystem32LogfilesSrtSrtTrail.txt, & I tried a few System Restore points but that just says -
System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporarily disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore. You can try System Restore again If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method.
Thing is I can't get into Windows or my laptop to disable the antivirus program.
I don't have any CD or DVD & no product key as the disc has been misplaced.

Nov 5, 2012I've been running Windows 8 since 10/27 and just noticed there were no System Restore points. Doesn't Windows 8 automatically create them when a significant event occurs, like Windows Update?
I created one manually but would like to see Win 8 create them.

I've had this problem for a year with windows 8 (now 8.1) and I think I even had it with 7. Before that it never seemed to be a problem.

Oct 10, 2013I have two restore points in System Restore that will not be removed.
Both are System Image Restore Points that were created when I was experimenting with the Windows 7 Recovery backup tool in Windows 8.
The backups were unsuccessful so I deleted them but I have been left with these two Restore Points....how I can remove these.
I have tried all the suggestions in this tutorial but nothing works [URL] .....

Mar 24, 2013I am running a cleanly installed standalone Windows 8 Pro X64 system which is not creating system restore points for updates, installations, and Revo Uninstaller uninstalls (despite the requisite setting being on in Revo).
I have being doing quite a bit of installation and updating over the past week or so but apart from one manually created restore point the only other was for an installation of Power DVD yesterday.
It seems MS is sitting on its hands on this one.

Mar 13, 2013I have read several times now that system restore creates a daily automatic restore point, I had a script to do this in 7 and I added it to win 8 , now I am thinking I don't need it.
I would guess it does it at start up. Having looked at the restore points going back to the 6th when i first got this laptop i dont see any instant restore points that look to have been created automatically(daily), and I don't see points for each software installed either (i read it does this also) as its a new laptop I have installed quite a few things and there ought to be quite a few restore points if this is the case.

Jan 1, 2014I have a .dll which I use to Show sort headings in all views (Win 8, File Explorer)?
I recently had to reset my Internet Explorer settings to remove Conduit Search hijacker. This stopped explorer7fixes.dll from working in File Explorer, because it was loaded into IE as an 'addon'. Now I cannot get it to work no matter how much I unregister and re-register the Explorer7Fixes.1.0.0.2 version of the .dll, and this is even after restarting explorer.exe/restarting/shutting down.
System Restore fixed this problem for me the last time it happened (I restored back to a time when explorer7fixes.dll was working), but it appears that won't work this time as my restore points are corrupted. Gives the error code (0x81000201)
Security :: Auto System Restore Points Not Created?
Dec 14, 2013I have used System Restore in Windows 7 to automatically create restore points, but not so in Windows 8 or 8.1. I configured TASKSCHD.MSC for a restore point to be created at 11 pm weekly, but not dice. I just changed the time to create a SR point daily at 7:15 AM to see if a SR point would be created. In Control Panel, there is not record of the SR point, but Task Scheduler says the 7:15 point was completed successfully. However, I can't find it in Control Panel.

Oct 20, 2013A month back I accidentally deleted the wow6432 node from my registry under system_user. I believe this is the root of all my problems. Once I did that, my toshiba c885 D 64 bit would not boot. I forced the computer to shut down and pressed f12 to get to the system recovery options. I then restored to a point before my blunder. Well, my laptop worked for a while and then magically the screen goes black and will not reboot. I did sestem restore a few more times since I could get a little bit of work done in between restoring and the screen turning black again. After I was fed up with having to run system restore every other day, I decided to run system refresh to keep my files but reset everything else. After restoring I am getting the same problem and find myself again running system restore every other day just to keep working.
My questions are if I completely reinstall windows 8 and start from scratch, will this definitely solve the problem? I thought system refresh would have worked, so I'm not sure. Also, are there any other available options for me to fix my computer without starting from scratch?

I had to power it off. When I restarted I noticed some of my programs weren't starting properly. Well I looked for a restore point an only found one. Before I had at least 6 or 8. My question is where have they gone. Is there a place where windows stores them, and is there a way to recover them?

Jul 4, 2014I have a windows 8.1 dell laptop ,for some reason system restore is not creating points manually or automatically, when I try to make a restore point manually the working bar just keeps moving at the sane time though I noticed in the device manger a generic volume shadow copy entry will show up with a yellow mark beside it ,I have tried maybe 10-15 times to uninstall this and try system restore again ,but this keeps repeating itself,
I have also went into safe mode but system restore points can't be made under safe mode, I did the repository thing where I rename that folder to old and reset repository in safe mode ,same result .

Nov 19, 2013When I wanted to fix my Windows 8.1 because it wouldn't start, I saw ALL my restore points had disappeared. This has happened to me with all Windows operating systems I've had: Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and perhaps XP. When I need them most, they're gone, ALL OF THEM (not only those replaced for newer ones).
Last time this happened, Windows 8.1 eventually fixed my system by applying "attempting repairs" (however this fix is called, it's an option when 8.1 cannot boot).
But why do the restore points disappear in Windows 7, 8 and 8.1? Can I save at least one to a disk or something? Instead of creating a system image, which is heavy and slow?.

New laptop, Windows 8 64bit pre-installed.
Is there any way to stop Win 8 automatically creating restore points, but still allow manual creation of points? Or at least "protect" important restore points.
I recently decided to restore a manual point to find Win 8 has deleted all of my points and replaced with "others". I realize I could increase the storage area, but I don't want that, as I'm always short of disc space.

Dec 10, 2013I installed the latest version (3.0.0.9015) of Secunia software to my new Win 8.1 desktop. The PSI Setup looked OK.
I got a screen at the end that said: PSI has been installed on your computer. Click Finish to Close Setup.
While I was reading this message and it was still on the screen I immediately had a message pop-up from "System Restore" that said: System Restore completed successfully. System has been restored to 11/11/2013 4:35:46 PM. Your documents have not been affected. <Close>
I wasn't anywhere near the Restore screen. I had just turned on the machine, searched to see if Secunia was available for 8.1 (since I used it on my Win 7 machine), and started the download. The download was successful and I was able to run a scan....but this whole System Restore completion screen has freaked me out.
I realize I should have manually set a restore point before loading new software
When I look at my current possibilities for doing a restore, I can select from 11/23 or 11/30 - both auto set (so why 11/11?. I'd assume there should also be one for 12/7 since they are being set weekly, but it's not there. Nor are any other restore points, though I really had been setting them quite frequently as I was "configuring" this new machine.
The allocation is set at 30. Is this typically sufficient for a set-it-up-and-leave-it-alone user?

Feb 6, 2013I've got the same problem as others are having regarding losing restore points. I have read extensively about possible fixes both in this forum and others but nothing works for me. The following is what I've done.
1. Partitioned one hard drive in 2 partitions. Did fresh install of Windows 7 and fresh install of Windows 8 on partitions. Installed Windows 7 first. Dual boot worked as expected. Originally left Windows 8 as default boot OS
2. When I went to make restore point on Windows 8 found that system restore was turned off on that drive.
I turned on system restore only on the drive where Windows 8 resided, set amount ofsystem restore space to maximum, and successfully made a manual restore point.
3. Booted into Win7. Checked that system restore was turned on. It was and I had restore points present.
4. Booted back into Windows 8. System restore was turned off again and amount of restore space had been changed back to 0%.
I did the above steps several times with same result. System restore would work fine as long as I never booted into Windows 7 but once I did all restore points made in Windows 8 disappeared.
5. I then tried to apply the registry fix that was written back in the day of dual booting XP and Win7 where XP would delete Win7 restore points. (adding subkey of DosDevicesD:with value of 1 to hklmSystemMounted devices to Win7)
This didn't work either. Windows 8 restore points still disappeared as soon as I booted into Win7.
6. In Win7 I checked VSS service & found it to be set to "manual" which I changed to "automatic" and started the service. Made another restore point successfully.
7. Booted back into Windows 8 and BOOM-restore point I'd made earlier was gone and amount of system restore space had changed to 0%
8. Thought the fact that having Windows 8 as default might cause problem so made Win 7 default OS. Went through all steps again but restore points still get deleted.
I read about the Bitlocker feature but I really don't know anything about it. Would enabling Bitlocker on Windows 8 solve this problem with Windows 7 deleting the restore points in Windows 8?
Some Programs Not Working After System Restore
Sep 6, 2014so after I did windows updates after a long time (it's for a good reason that I am not updating) the notebook failed to start correctly. After the windows loading screen, only different tones of black were flashing - probably bad graphics driver. Anyway, I managed to do a system restore. Although it said it wasn't successful, it works But now some programs won't start. From Adobe, AfterEffects starts without problems, but Photoshop and Illustrator has an error: [URL]
When I try to uninstall Office completely, the set-up window doesn't even come up. And what's worse... when I run a new installation from a disk, there's an error too. [URL]
I've never come across something like this.. I don't know what to do.
Edit: So I managed to uninstall Office through a 3rd party software.. but I still have trouble installing it back (a different error now). I run as administrator and have full user rights on the folder..
Windows 8.1 - System Restore Button Is Not Working
Sep 15, 2014This button is not working. The window doesnt hang. There is no error message. It just doesnt say anything. I am trying to install Visual Studio 2013. It needs to create a system restore point before starting installation. Needless to say, it fails too. I am on Windows 8.1. I ran sfc /scannow with no results.

Aug 16, 2014My main problem is that I accidentally uninstalled MS Office earlier today from my Dell Inspiron which I bought in 2012; the second problem is that I can't do a system restore to get it back to the point before the accidental un-installation. I'm on Windows 8. It keeps telling me there's something wrong but when I run a check on the C: drive, everything comes up fine. I opened the computer in safe mode, do a system restore and same thing happens - error.
I don't know if I can locate the original MS Office card that I received when I got the computer, to re-install the program, which is why I'm in a bit of a panic right now.

When I click System/System Protection, click the [System Restore] button and choose the "Choose a different restore point" radio button, I am only offered a single restore point. I understand that some users also see a radio box reading "Show more restore points," but I have no such option. Is there a download available or some other way to see more than one restore point? I tried restoring in the hope that I could then see a prior restore point, but not such luck. Aug 5, 2014My laptop (Dell Inspiron 2013 64-bit) was playing up today and instead of restarting it, I foolishly clicked on the option to "refresh the pc". Little did I know that this would remove all my current programs....
I decided then to do a System Restore. Now, all my programs are back, however, the majority of my programs such Firefox, Microsoft Office and such will not even open!!!
I would just like to know if there is anyway to get these programs running again without having to reinstall them all?

Feb 26, 2014I have the famous blue screen of death for the first time. I am using windows 8.1. Every time I try to boot into my rig, it says that:"windows has encountered some problems and need to restart". I am using another computer to write this message but most of all I have absolutely no clue how to resolve the issue. Restore Points were turned off in the rig to save space - Not my idea but it is what it is I have no back up - I am starting my rig and as soon as I get to the log in screen, the unit restart to a blue screen. I have a couple of options but most of them can't since I have no back up and no restore point.
When the rig restarts, I land on a blue page with 1 continue 2 troubleshoot 3 turn off your PC I choose 2 (because of tools). Then I have: 1 Refresh you PC: I need the refresh more than my PC 2 Reset your PC. It says if you want to remove all your files. Definitely not what I want to do. 3 Advanced options I choose 3 and then I get: 1 System Restore: No restore point so useless 2 System Image Recovery: No backup so useless 3 Start Up Repair: Tried that but no go 4 Command prompt: Tried that but I have no clue on how to move forward once on command prompt. 5 Start Up Behavior I picked that one and went option 1 to 4. 4 being the option that allowed to log into the unit in safe mode. Once I am in Safe Mode what should I be doing ?

At the same time o0ther serious problems have arisen:
In control panel>programs and features all programs except those named Mi-Mo have disappeared. Some installed since are there, and those in the quick launch menu still work. Most are also missing from the start menu.
Al;so on start up I get a small window saying explorer.exe with a yellow exclamation mark and nothing else.
