View 4 RepliesIn few days I will have my new computer with Windows 8.1, and I wonder what solution would be the best for easy backing up and restoring of system drive in the new machine. For last 5 years I've been using Acronis to create an image of entire partition c: , with windows and all my crucial software, and if only my system felt slow or there was too many stuff installed, I simply restored it from this image (of course app data was moved to d:, so that no settings of my programs were replaced). From time to time I was making new image, so that it was always ready to work 'out of the box' with all the updates etc..
Any different solution to accomplish the same as I don't want to move app data to d: any more because I'll have ssd drive for my system, and I would prefer to have it all in one partition, so my solution will no longer be effective. Is there any native Windows 8 solution for system backup and is it any good? Or maybe I could simply backup "windows" and "program files" folders, and restore just them. Would it be as effective as restoring entire partition?
Automatic Restore Points is not working in System Restore. Task Scheduler is empty during last 30 days.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi have windows 8 when trying to use system restore it gets to the screen that says system restore is restoring files, but that's as far as it gets, I let it run today for 4 hrs. what can i do?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was able to do it in XP. I created a shortcut to system restore and put it on the Start Menu. So much easier than the way Windows 8 works. Wondering if there's a way to do the same in 8.1?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been running Windows 8 since 10/27 and just noticed there were no System Restore points. Doesn't Windows 8 automatically create them when a significant event occurs, like Windows Update?
I created one manually but would like to see Win 8 create them.
But I still cant restore to a chosen Restore Point.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is the message I get when I try and open system restore.
At the same time o0ther serious problems have arisen:
In control panel>programs and features all programs except those named Mi-Mo have disappeared. Some installed since are there, and those in the quick launch menu still work. Most are also missing from the start menu.
Al;so on start up I get a small window saying explorer.exe with a yellow exclamation mark and nothing else.
I'd do a system restore point to get over a problem - there aren't any!
Shouldn't windows automatically make them?
I've had this problem for a year with windows 8 (now 8.1) and I think I even had it with 7. Before that it never seemed to be a problem.
I want to use System Restore because every time I right click in file explorer or on my desktop, they crash (but I'm still able to run other programs normally). But when I try to start it, nothing happens. In the task manager, under background processes, it lists System Restore as many times as I've clicked on it! My anti-virus software isn't reacting to anything, though.
I really need to make a system image before I send my laptop in to get a hardware problem fixed, but I don't want to carry this over in the system image once the hardwares fixed...
I have never managed to get System Restore to work on Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 and always have to fall back to a backup.
I get a message indicating error code 0x80070005 and suggesting I turn off my anti-virus.
I have tried turning off my AV before running the restore but to no avail, and since the AV starts automatically I'm not quite sure how turning it off before the restore would work.
I recently tried a restore from the latest recovery point and got error code 0x80070006.
I installed 8.0 with the factory disk and for awhile the option to "refresh your pc" worked perfectly. However after the 8.1 update, I get a message stating to insert the 8.1 disk and it won't work with my regular 8.0 disk. I don't have an 8.1 disk. Is there a way to download an iso and use that to refresh the pc then use the original 8.0 key? I usually try to restore every 6 months because it's a habit I have had since 7. Usually my windows works fine but I run low on SSD space and it's easier to erase and restart everytime.
View 3 Replies View RelatedEverytime I disable the system restore it enables itself a day or so later. It's incredibly frustrating it does this with both PC's.
View 1 Replies View RelatedReloaded my computer and downloaded apps...and 2 times I received a different redirect virus and the first thing it does is turn off the system restore and wipe out any restore points. Then, I am screwed...
I always uncheck all the extra stuff like toolbars apps like to get you to download. The last app that did this was the weather channel app.
My question is, how can I configure system restore to require a password to disable it which a virus may not look for? Or anything to keep system restore intact ?
It is too easy for these virus' to keep folks from restoring.
I made a system image from Windows 8.1 using Windows' own system image feature. I seem to be unable to restore it. I booted with the Windows 8 disc, and told it to restore from a system image. It found the image, ran a few minutes, then failed because of version mismatch (?). Not before hosing the entire system, by the way. Luckily, I was well backed up.
I booted with the Windows 7 disc, and it didn't even see the system image (on my external HD). It saw my Windows 7 system image and restored it just fine, and here I am.
Anyway, is there some trick to restoring a Windows 8.1 system image? I am not running Windows 8.1, so I can't generate a repair disk that way. Is there one available online somewhere for download?
how to do a System Restore on my Win. 8 machine. I have the four blue square start button at the bottom left.
View 3 Replies View RelatedA month back I accidentally deleted the wow6432 node from my registry under system_user. I believe this is the root of all my problems. Once I did that, my toshiba c885 D 64 bit would not boot. I forced the computer to shut down and pressed f12 to get to the system recovery options. I then restored to a point before my blunder. Well, my laptop worked for a while and then magically the screen goes black and will not reboot. I did sestem restore a few more times since I could get a little bit of work done in between restoring and the screen turning black again. After I was fed up with having to run system restore every other day, I decided to run system refresh to keep my files but reset everything else. After restoring I am getting the same problem and find myself again running system restore every other day just to keep working.
My questions are if I completely reinstall windows 8 and start from scratch, will this definitely solve the problem? I thought system refresh would have worked, so I'm not sure. Also, are there any other available options for me to fix my computer without starting from scratch?
System Restore did not complete successfully.. System restore failed to extract the file..
I turned off AVG self protection...but nothing works fine...
I wonder whether one or more of 13 recent Windows Updates has caused an issue. I can use System Restore to take my PC back to September 7th, three days before the Windows Updates were installed (there is just a Java update that has taken place since that I would have to carry out again). Alternatively, I can uninstall the Windows Updates one at a time or all together to see whether that rectifies the situation. Is there a preference? Should I uninstall from the highest KB number downwards if I uninstall the Updates one at a time?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two restore points in System Restore that will not be removed.
Both are System Image Restore Points that were created when I was experimenting with the Windows 7 Recovery backup tool in Windows 8.
The backups were unsuccessful so I deleted them but I have been left with these two Restore Points....how I can remove these.
I have tried all the suggestions in this tutorial but nothing works [URL] .....
I am using Windows 8.1x64 in UEFI mode. My motherboard is Gigabyte H77M-D3H. My hard disk is configured to use AHCI. A few days back I needed to use system restore from my repair disk because of a system crash. To my horror when I selected System Restore from my Windows repair disk it showed-:
"To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows Installation to restore. Restart this computer select an operating system, and then select system restore."
Now I don't have multiple Windows installations but I do have Debian Linux x64 dual booted with Windows 8.1. the Debian Linux also boots in UEFI mode. Is this problem caused by the fact that I am dual booting ? Has Linux dual booted, check if you can system restore from the windows repair disk.
I can perform a system restore from the inside of the OS fine. But I need it working from the outside also. What I have tried is running diskpart from the repair disk and selecting my partition on which Windows is installed and then running system restore but this had no effect. Can I boot up windows and then select to boot from my CD ? Like, before Windows completes booting I can have the repair disk boot up or something. Could it be that I am booting my CD in legacy rather than UEFI ?
PS-: My Windows 8 was upgraded from an installation of Windows 7. But I have already deleted the Windows.old folder in C drive.
My windows 8 pro install messed up n i have almost 2.8tb of stuff on my drive on a 3tb hd. I have an identical hd as a backup which i have (an apparently successful) a backup of my system from a couple of weeks ago on. I had set the system to do scheduled backups of the system (set to backup a system image of efi partition and c. There were a few times where i was trying to get other things done and the systemwas running slow so i cancelled the backups when i noticed them running. The software stopped the backups (seemingly successfully).
As i say my system messed up - i came home to find out it was no longer downloading (as i had left it doing when i went to work) but was on a blue screen (bsod?) saying the system needs to be restarted. Since then it didnt work well at all and after dskchk reported that several sectors were damaged so it was moving data to spare sectors (or whatever it generally reports when this happens) there were a lot of files messed up or reported as deleted when doing a file recovery scan with recuvva.
So i decided to restore the backed up system image from the other hd. Incidentally i tried mounting the vhdx backup image from that hd via windows explorer which then reported "the disk needs formatting" and didnt get any success mounting via disk management either (it mounted in the app but didnt show up on windows explorer and if i tried to access info on it via disk management it reported the same"disk needs formatting prompt".
So when i booted my win 8 dvd it didnt work cos the dvd wasnt an efi booting version so i had to boot from a usb version with the efi bit included.
I formatted the system drive and chose to do an image restore. It started doing the restore (apparently) but every time i came back to it later i had the follwing error:
"Re-image your computer
The system image restore failed.
Error details: The requested system device cannot be identified due to multiple indistinguishable devices potentially matching the identification criteria Ox80073B92"
It took me so long to set up my system n i have a lot of my own data on there too. The system drive I formatted was created in diskpart and then re formatted with "format" command (as it created the disk in raw mode) so now it is ntfs mode (uncompressed).
I have a windows 8.1 dell laptop ,for some reason system restore is not creating points manually or automatically, when I try to make a restore point manually the working bar just keeps moving at the sane time though I noticed in the device manger a generic volume shadow copy entry will show up with a yellow mark beside it ,I have tried maybe 10-15 times to uninstall this and try system restore again ,but this keeps repeating itself,
I have also went into safe mode but system restore points can't be made under safe mode, I did the repository thing where I rename that folder to old and reset repository in safe mode ,same result .
I have read several times now that system restore creates a daily automatic restore point, I had a script to do this in 7 and I added it to win 8 , now I am thinking I don't need it.
I would guess it does it at start up. Having looked at the restore points going back to the 6th when i first got this laptop i dont see any instant restore points that look to have been created automatically(daily), and I don't see points for each software installed either (i read it does this also) as its a new laptop I have installed quite a few things and there ought to be quite a few restore points if this is the case.
both Win 8.1 Pro 64 bit machines. When my intent is to go to a system restore point, from System Properties and then click on System Restore it takes slightly more than 2 minutes for the Restore dialog window to open. This is from the Desktop which I use almost exclusively.
This is an update from Windows 8, which behaved the same, and has had a repair install to see if that would work. It didn't. I have tried your Shadow copy entries mentioned earlier but with no improvement. I have resorted to a third party program "RestorePointCreator.exe" Which works quickly like Win 7 does.
My dual booted Win 7 Pro opens almost by the time my finger releases the mouse button
I have no system protection tab in System Properties box, hence I cannot create a restore point. Looking for the answer to get this tab enabled or reinstalled. I am logging in with Admin rights.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running a cleanly installed standalone Windows 8 Pro X64 system which is not creating system restore points for updates, installations, and Revo Uninstaller uninstalls (despite the requisite setting being on in Revo).
I have being doing quite a bit of installation and updating over the past week or so but apart from one manually created restore point the only other was for an installation of Power DVD yesterday.
It seems MS is sitting on its hands on this one.
recently I tried doing a system restore on windows 8 and after going through the process of waiting, I received a message upon reboot namely this "System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer's files and settings were not changed.
System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore, (0x80070005)"
anyway I panicked and went to undo the last change made(if one was in fact made) via system restore , but the same thing happened I repeated this procedure a few times trying to restore to the same point and then undoing the operation (I have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) to which it just kept giving the same error message after going through a short process and rebooting each time.
I was wondering could any of this possibly of corrupted my files, deleted files, or wrecked anything in any way, my computer my programs, anything. As far as I can remember the restore process said something about restoring registry each time, which only took a short time.
How do you make Windows 8 make Restore points on every system change without manually doing it yourself? Like drivers, programs, etc.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was on my samsung laptop last night, and I found a folder called "Searches>Indexed locations". I saw it was taking up some space so i went through some of the files seeing that some were Type:Shortcuts. So I deleted them to free up a bit of space thinking "it's only a shortcut, can't harm it". Now some icons are missing from my windows 8 start screen and some programs have become inoperable because of missing files. I tried System restore to bring some of it back, it was going ok, then when it tried to restart, showed the samsung logo, then just blackscreened for 4+ hours. It was on , but blank. Haven't been using the laptop long so I don't really know the specs on it.
It came with no DvD/CD for me to use to format the laptop and I cant get it on to boot it up right for me to format it to begin with.
I atleast do know the graphics card was an AMD Radeon HD 7460
Can't seem to access Bios either.
One thing I forgot to mention which might have something to do with it, is I was using a custom windows 8 theme, because microsoft, being as stingy as they are, from what i assume does not enable you to have your own theme, so I had something called the "ribbon disabler and UXTheme Cracker" to use a custom windows 8 theme.
I just installed Windows 8.1 on my system (from Windows 8) and had to restore to an earlier time (to one from earlier today). The issue is that my solid state hard drive was reduced by about 20 Gigs! I even deleted the other restore points and rebooted, but my hard drive has about 136 gigs of space. Before the restore, it was 156.
Does windows restore really eat up this much hard drive space? Is there a way to get it back?
