Thumbnail Pictures Deleted - How To Restore

Jan 29, 2014

My problem is that all my thumbnails that would normally show as the actual picture in any file or folder including ones saved to the desktop have all been replaced with a windows generic mountain and sun cartoon. The only way I can see what any individual picture file is ...is to physically click on it and open it up in a viewer. This is a royal pain to try to find any individual picture to say the least.

.I get a error message saying restore could not be completed...try choosing a different restore date.........I have tried them all.....same error message

Accounts :: Deleted USERS Folder - How To Restore

Jul 2, 2014

I'm using Win 8 with Win 7 Interface.

So basically the problem is that the computer is running on win 8 and the folder 'Users' located in C: was copied to disk D: and then deleted from disk C:.

Results?

Now when I go to 'start' there are no 'my music' 'my documents' etc, instead of that it shows '<No Text>' and doesn't open up. (Although when I scroll over the "<No Text>" (there are 3 different ones) I can see bars popping up 'Access letters and etc documents', 'View and organize pictures', 'Play music and other audio files'.)

I tried system restore 3 times to 3 different earlier restore points - nothing happened. How to fix this without having to reinstall OS?

Accounts :: Deleted Admin Account In Update - How To Restore

Jun 8, 2014

I only had one account on my Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1 x64 computer. Then I messed it up when I changed rights. Now the computer boots up and I can log in but as a user.

Most of the suggestions I read require admin rights which I no longer have. I can't create a new account or edit the built-in admin account but I keep getting the error 5.

So Should I try to boot in safe mode with DOS prompt and hopefully admin rights?

Would a system restore work? I do have recent restore points but will I be able to restore if I am not the administrator?

I am asking all of this because I am not in front of my computer at this moment... I had to leave on a business trip so I will attempt repairs when I get back home.

Worst case scenario will require me to start from scratch, which I am trying to avoid.

Setup Installation :: Restore Defaults Deleted Boot Priorities Completely

Dec 28, 2012

I bought a Windows 8 laptop, ASUS Q500A, and reformatted it with Windows 7.

I went into the BIOS and used "Restore Defaults" and now all Boot Option Priorities are deleted.

Each time I boot the laptop, it automatically goes to BIOS (or UEFI).

I tried inserting the Windows 7 disc so I can access Startup Repair or Command Prompt but it freezes before it could get anywhere even when I tried it with an external CD/DVD drive.

I cannot get the laptop to boot to the hard drive or CD drive at all,

how I can reset the boot option priorities so it will be boot to the hard drive again.

Accounts :: How To Reset User Deleted Subfolders / File Paths

Jun 1, 2013

I mistakenly deleted the contents of a user's account folder and was unable to replace the sub-folders manually or by pasting empty ones from another account. If I try to use the account to save files, I just get an error message saying that the folder xxx or file path doesn't exist, depending on where I am trying to save them. This is not just a long filename error and I am afraid that I have caused problems for the user that would affect any Windows 8 account he opens in future, because of Microsoft syncing.

Maintenance :: File History - Restore From HD Crash?

Aug 16, 2013

I have file history set up and running to an external hard drive, happily saving each version of any changed or new data files in the various libraries. I am able to go back and recover older versions of edited or deleted files. All of this I think I have a handle on.

OK, now imagine that one day my hard drive grinds it's heads into the platters, dying a fast death with no recovery possible. I buy a new drive and restore Windows 8 to the way it was when I first got my computer using the saved system restore I have on a USB drive (My PC is an Acer Aspire M5 481PT-6644). So far so good.

Here is my question: how do I re-link this new installation to the existing File History database on the external drive so that I can restore my precious data?

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 Update 1 File History After Restore?

May 26, 2014

I ran into a minor problem with Acronis True Image 2014 after letting Microsoft install Update 1 on my system. For some reason the desktop Icons go blank for ~15 seconds when I boot. As soon as I uninstall TI the problem goes away. The problem also seems to go away if I "turn off" Auto Logon to my Microsoft Account. Base on all my Acronis Forum discussions I must be the only person in the world with this problem! The stand alone version of TI 2014 works OK. I will continue to use the standalone version of TI 2014 to backup the system (Boot Partition) periodically since I know it works and has saved me from disaster numerous times.

So...I'm ready to let Windows 8.1 handle my data backups using the File History function. Dumb question - if I do a system restore because of a virus or whatever will Windows 8.1 be able to use the file history maintained by the version of Windows 8.1 that was wiped out by the restore? The file history will be on a separate disk drive.

Win 8 - Remove Metro Apps And Restore Standard File Associations To Pictures?

Sep 4, 2012

Any way to get rid of Metro appz which come with Win8 directly working with Dism. Also it's possible to restore standard file associations so that pictures open with Image viewer without switching to Metro UI.

Note: c: est contains my offline image.

Code:
dism /image:c: est /Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage /PackageName:Microsoft.BingFinance_1.2.0.135_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe
dism /image:c: est /Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage /PackageName:Microsoft.BingMaps_1.2.0.136_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe

[Code] .....

To fix associations, save this XML as "AppAssoc.xml":

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<DefaultAssociations>
<Association Identifier=".bmp" ProgId="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Bitmap" ApplicationName="Windows Photo Viewer" />
<Association Identifier=".dib" ProgId="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Bitmap" ApplicationName="Windows Photo Viewer" />

[Code] .....

And then:

Code:
dism /image:c: est /Remove-DefaultAppAssociations
dism /image:c: est /import-DefaultAppAssociations:C:AppAssoc.xml

Folder Options Greyed Out Permanently

Dec 29, 2012

Since i did a fresh reinstall of Win 8 64 i have never been able to change the folder view options. Example; I am in a windows explorer window, everything is displayed as a large icon (yuk), i right click go to view and change to details. I then click 'view' on the toolbar and click options, I then navigate to the 'View' tab whereby my intention is to apply the 'detailed' view to all explorer windows in future yet both fields are greyed out (the 'Apply to Folders' and 'Rest Folders').

It has never been usable since this fresh install (ie on previous versions of win 8 installs i recall it working, but not this one, ie its not a recent problem, has always been like this).

Permanently Disable Safe Mode?

Nov 10, 2012

I have protected my pc at work and locked it down so that no employee can access windows 8. Only problem is that yesterday I accidently pressed reset button midway whilst windows was loading and it brought up the safe mode screen. Since I have a full backup image of my drive, I can always reload my preferred setup whenever I want via usb install, so I don't want windows to run into safe mode at all - EVEN IF IT MEANS I COULD LOSE DATA!

My question is How can I disable this safemode feature from starting at all if windows crashes?

Permanently Disable Auto Maintenance Windows 8.1

Apr 26, 2014

Windows 8.1 [update] 64bit
HP G62293sa
Intel i5 2.5GHz
6GB Ram

I really need a solution to permanently disable auto maintenance in 8.1.

I've tried everything in task scheduler. I've disabled 'Idle Maintenance' & 'Regular Maintenance' ... and I was finally able to find a way to disable 'Maintenance Configurator'. However, the 'custom triggers' for the latter are impossible to disable as is the 'daily trigger' which keeps re-enabling itself.

The auto maintenance is a law unto itself. It doesn't run when the system is idle. It runs whenever it feels like it ... which is usually when I'm browsing, streaming etc. I've put up with this for long enough. There has to be a permanent solution.

Graphic Cards :: Permanently Get Rid Of Low Resolution Startup

Aug 23, 2013

I installed Windows 8 Pro on a new PC. I ran into a problem where Windows automatically started at the wrong monitor timing. I temporarily used a TV to get to an advanced startup screen that had a check box for low-resolution. That allowed it to work with my display. I now have a video card that correctly supports my display. The problem is, Windows 8 always boots in low resolution and I have to manually change it after each boot.

The problem is that I don't recall what gave me the screen with the menu. It is not the blue screen with press F1 - F9. This was a standard dialog box with check boxes and a note on the side saying any changes would be permanent. But any method that allows it to permanently boot to a normal screen.
