When I try to open a PDF file, I always/still gets the question "How do you want to open this type of file (pdf) ?"
I tried the usual ways:
+ to set association with "Set Associations" in default programs
+ registry entry is ok (as far as I can tell)
I am getting annoyed to tell everytime to choose the same program...
Everytime I install Windows 8 , the default file association all goes to Metro UI associated. I won't use Metro UI at all , instead use the Desktop. So everytime I've go to the [Control Panel] .. Programs] ... [Make a file type always open in a specific program] It's very annoying. Is there a simple way to let me change all the files association type such as by .reg. I've tried regshot program to get certain file association change registry then import it to the registry , but with fail. As it said program is in use , forbitten ...I can't thinks of a simple way to solve this program even in the safe mode.
View 9 Replies View RelatedOn my new Windows 8 machine, every time I put an audio CD into the disk drive, the Power DVD program starts. THis is MOST ANNOYING! I want audio CDs to launch Windows Media Player so that I can rip them to the hard drive. If I go to Control Panel -> Default Programs -> Associate a File Type with a Program, there is NO LISTING in there for .cda files, which is what compact disc audio files are.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy Windows 8.1 64 bit started forgetting the view settings from a folder.So if I go in a folder and I set it to List-View for example,whenever I close that folder and I reopen it the view is set automatically to Details view.And this applies to every folder in my computer except Desktop.It drives me crazy,especially in my pictures folders.
Also with this problem another one came.I can't set a program to open some files,so the file associations for some files is broken.For example i can't set qTorrent to open torrent files.It just won't open them and the files apear as white documents just like I hadn't had a Torrent program installed already.I find it weird that both problems appeared together.
I previously had to reinstall windows on my machine,because of this problems.It worked normal at the begging,but today these problems appeared again.I tried scanning SFC Scan with no result.
I recently found many application would not save to correct type. Some software icons would come out to a blank or white block, but those software actually there. For example, realrecorder is running, it would come out a white block on taskbar on bottom. I tried use 'access and program default' in control panel, still not fix the issue. Ms word, and word pad also come out white blank icon.

View 7 Replies View RelatedSome programs are becoming slow to load or do not recognize their connection to a file extension. Most noticeable are Nitro PDF Professional which doesn't always start when I click on a PDF file, sometimes it does, some times it doesn't. Quicken is often slow to start, some times the window opens then it waits for the display, sometimes the there is a wait until the window even opens. Same for xplorer2 opening and even selecting another folder. Going back to Windows 7 with almost the identical installed programs/utilities (about 40) the "problem" goes away.

Apparently it is necessary to set an association in Windows 8.1 to use Windows Mail as default MAPI application. However, for that it would be necessary to find the actual application (exe) file for Windows Mail - and I cannot find this. This file is not in the Windows Mail folder that is in the Program Files folder (see enclosed screen shot).
Is it possible to create a MAPI association for Windows Mail in Windows 8.1 or could it be that Windows Mail is not a MAPI application?

Old vista pc died, kept a running backup disc every sunday up until august when I bought an Toshibe ex. hard drive.I had quite a few problems transferring the Toshiba into the windows 8 pc. Made multiple copies on the hard drive darn near 250 gigs. So erased all those files and transferred the backups I had on discs. They're in my pc but I don't know how to access them/. I installed a couple apps but I still don't see anything. I want to send attachments via email and the pc wants me to create an association in the default section. There is a list a mile long which I don't understand. Do i install some kind of app or is something else not setup right....
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe attrib +s +h command that is used to make a file a system and hidden file is no longer working. When i try to use the command on a folder, the folder just shows up as a normal hidden folder which can be easily viewed using show hidden items in view option. It looks as if every system file is not recognizing itself as a system file.
Also every folder in my system has appeared a desktop.ini and thumbs.db folder.
I am running Windows 8- 64 bit
How to make the 'Libraries' folder structure appear when doing a file open file save. In both case I can see the folders labeled Desktop, Documents, Downloads, etc. but I cannot see the Libraries folder.
Is this possible? How?
I don't know how I did it but I got both Windows 7 File Recovery and Windows 8 File History active at the same time. I upgraded from Win 7 to 8 Pro and transferred settings so win 7 file recovery was already active, when I tried to turn on win 8 file recovery I got a message saying I cant because win 7 FR was active. So I deactivated win 7 FR then activated win 8 FR, for giggles I went back and turned on win 7 FR and it worked. Now I have both active, from what I have read this was not possible. Did I break my OS or am I just lucky?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn Windows 8.0 File History, it had the nasty habit of duplicating your library files on your backup ( in my case, my external USB backup drive ( Replica 2 Terabyte ). By DUPLICATING, I mean they get copied over and over and over again... This happens to ALL of them, even though you have not touched the majority of them for YEARS. (File History is suppose to copy them over the FIRST time, then copy a new copy with a new name (old name plus date) if you edit the file in any way). I turned of file indexing on ALL my drives, except my C: drive, to see if that would stop it ( this is recommended in many threads on other sites ).

If I right click on the folder and go to send to all I get is the dvd drive unless I shift right click first then a drop down of more selections appear but not send to compress. The SFX files unzips the contents to a folder on my hard disk (no problem), but then tries to run another program (installer.exe) that is located in the extracted folder.
The program fromm inside the SFX runs fine if I set the compatibility to XP manually, but the problem is that the the SFX extracts the files to a different location each time it is run.
Is there a global way to make a program (installer.exe) run in compatibility mode wherever it exists?

Turned the PC on this morning and all my files (audio , picture and video) now have the file type at the end of the file name so instead of cars42 it reads cars42.mpg same for all other file types, Why?

I have not changed any file specs, it just appeared today. I have many thousand files and need them to be short for work, i don't want the added .mpg,.jpg, .mp3 etc added. Do i just system restore? I used my BD to load an ISO file and it mounted a CD Drive (F to accomplish that. I know to unmount the drive you need to right click and 'Eject' it. However, my 'Eject' option is greyed out and not available. Until I unmount that drive, I am not able to use my physical Blue Ray Drive. how to accomplish this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I download software onto my Windows 8, often there is an .msi file to install the application. When I double-click on the .msi file, I get an error "Error while Opening File". This occurs on various software packages, so is just not a bad download.
When I click "OK" to this error message, I get a big green button on the screen, with "Download" in big letters, and "ilivid" in smaller characters.
I did mistakingly download the ilivid app onto my PC (once again a big green button on a download site that I thought was the download link to the file I wanted, however I uninstalled it once I read some articles online about it, also ran Malwarebytes to check for malware.
Do I need to re-associate the .msi files with the Windows Installer?
