I have just made a clean install of Windows 8 Pro. Then I installed a couple of apps. I noticed that at the root of Windows 8 drive there are only folders and no files shown such as bootmgr, BOOTNXT, etc.

I am Administrator, and I have UIC set to its lowest possible setting.
I cannot copy any files to the C: Drive (root)... every time I get an error message and it will not let me do anything with the root.
So, I ran gpedit.msc and did these steps..
1. Run gpedit.msc, navigate and browse to Computer Configuration--Windows Settings--Security Settings--Local Policies--Security Options
2. Set policy User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators - Elevate without prompting
3. Set policy User Account Control: Detect application installations and prompt for elevation - Disabled
4. Set policy User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode - Disabled
OK, now perfect - I have full control of the root drive again... But this sparked another major issue with the 'modern apps' (metro)...
All modern/metro apps will now NOT RUN because they want UIC turned on (as in change those settings back I just tweaked).....
As soon as I turn UIC back on.... metro apps work - and I am blocked from my root drive again.
I have had this happen once before, I am running Windows 8 on an OCZ Vertex 4 SSD.The problem is that suddenly all my files inside all the directories and sub directories in my Documents folder have been moved to the root of Documents and have all been named with their original directory location in the filename. To give a clear example: a file originally located in Rockstar GamesL.A. Noiresettings.ini is now in my root Documents folder under the name Rockstar Games_L.A. Noire_settings.ini
All of the folders and sub-folders in my Documents are empty and all of the files are in Documents with those names. They all follow the pattern of having the directory in the filename separated by underscores . I have over 11K files now sitting in my Documents and all my programs that require files in my Documents folder are now broken.
I cannot find how to open root folder instead of the libraries folder. It seems the way I did it in Win7 will not work.

I adjusted settings and tried to rename with my name however the ROOT user is still John Doe. I've heard I can create a new account and "move" all my files to my new account, thus essentially renaming the computer. I've heard all that changes is the "pointer". Exactly, which files I need to move so I can delete the "John Doe" user?

i don't know if this is related but my laptop also wont charge. I just bought a new AC Adapter to replace the one i had, and it still isn't charging. I have downloaded VLC player and the video works fine.

My Windows 8.1 desktop system is not able to show DOS-based messages. That is, messages from the system as it is starting up and before Windows opens, and other DOS-like displays. For example, Windows 8.1 has a "Windows Memory Diagnostics" app. When I start this app from within Windows, nothing is shown on the monitor.
For example, upon powering on my computer the first thing I used to see was the Gateway monitor logo. Now nothing shows until Windows boots.
For example, the computer crashed unexpectedly and began restarting immediately. I was not presented with the typical screen that offers to start in safe mode. Instead, it takes a minute or two and Windows appears.
For example, (pure speculation) when the computer crashes I am wondering if the system is trying to show me the Blue Screen of Death. But nothing is shown at all and the computer reboots.
Suspects: I have a dual monitor system with an XFX R7700 graphics card. It was suggested I remove the card and plug in one monitor with VGA cable. That "fixed" it and I am seeing DOS-like displays.
Related Problem: My computer has been crashing unexpectedly and often -- several times a day. When it does it is so immediate and complete it is as if the power plug had been pulled. It starts up again immediately but may take a bit more time to get going than usual. Then everything is fine until it crashes again.
I have laptop I gave to my nephew to use for a while for He's studying a basic computer course. I created add user account from it yet I do not test the drive D if it is readable, editable, or writeable, all the files I stored there. What I noticed was the Drive C of my personal files is fully isolated by password. So, my question is can I configure my Drive D too to view or read only my files for someone? I don't want to share because some files stored it contains terms and agreement.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI use an internal data drive for most of my data. In win 8 the drive is E and I've created several folders and populated them with data. I then rebooted my machine to a Win 7 pro system and added a folder and some data to the E drive. No issues.
When I go back to Win 8 i can't see the folder and files I created on the E drive from Win 7.
I haven't gone back to Win 7 yet to see if they are there, but I would be willing to bet that I will see them in Win 7. How do I resolve?
I wanted to delete some audio tracks from a cd I made.They won't delete.
The Windows 8 message says to go to Disk Cleaner and chose "D Drive " from the drop down menu, however, there is NOT Drop Down Menu and the only thing Disk Cleaner goes to is to clean files on the C Drive.

My old Sony Vaio broke the other day, so I've just got a new laptop. The Vaio was Vista, but now I'm on Windows 8.
I'd been backing up my Vaio to an external harddrive, but all I ever did was run the backup and let it get on with it. So for example, within the external harddrive now it just has a list of the dates I ran a backup, followed by 'Backup files 1', 'Backup files 2' etc. I'm hoping these include some of the documents/files I had on there, but I can't be sure. What exactly will have been backed up here?

Programs are mainly installed to C: but I have also some programs installed to E: Program Files, Program Files (68), Program Data etc . Now I want to to move E-drive contents to another hard drive (all files stored on e-drive).
I think the safest way is to reinstall all programs, but I don't want to do this. Also it is possible to move files to new partition which has another drive letter than e: and create link, but this I don't want to do either.
Can I do it like this:
1) Change e-drive letter to x
2) Create new e-drive to another hard drive
3) Copy e-drive contents to new e-dive
4) that is it?
Can I use normal copy - paste to copy all files? I think register references are the same after these steps because drive letter and content of the e-drive are still the same.
Does my method work? It sound so easy to do. Is it "too easy"? Does it have any risks?

Not only on Windows 8.1 but on Windows 8 as well ever since I am on the new system, I get too many times 'This page cannot be displayed'. This happens like a page timeout where it takes it longer to load than allowed..
I have been on Ethernet 50 mbps and there seems to be no problem - I can load 10 tabs at a time and they will load. The problem happens when with wi fi modem and supposedly no one else uses the connection, with speedtest I get 17 mbps download, 8 ms ping, 10 upload or smth.
At first I thought it's specific sites doing it but heck it can happen anywhere, forums with just background images, this is where it mostly happens btw, not google images or places with just many images, even forums with simple UI interface, emails.
Is this a lan card issue? Hardly, Ethernet connection is good but maybe it is separate. the modem? If I try smartphone with the wifi which is usually disconnected to not eat the traffic and connectivity, it works fine but maybe Android works too differently. With the notebook I've been having this for 1 year and getting annoying, haven't changed the place yet but 17 mbps should be good enough
In few games, I may lag but this happens rarely in most cases such speed is fine and yet for forums and such it can't load a darn page until I refresh 2-3-5 times... (sometimes without the pictures). This forum loads fine but others and sometimes mail services do not.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI plan to get a new Windows 8.1 laptop soon. I want it to have 8gb RAM and an internal 128gb SSD drive where I keep all the OS, driver and other system files. Then I want all my media files (documents, music, vids, etc) on an external USB 3.0 hard drive. I recognize that keeping files on an external drive may cause slow behavior in some situations. My my guess is that USB 3.0 is fast enough so this won't be a problem in most situations. And I plan to get an external drive that has USB 3.0.
I'm not a power user. I don't edit video or do fancy rendering or stuff like that. I just browse the net, create some docs and spreadsheets, listen to some music and watch some vids. I play around with Audacity once in a while and that's about it. I'm an average user.
So, any problems with keeping all my user files on an external drive?
Is it possible to move the User and Program Files Folder from the drive with Windows 8 in it to another drive?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm on a domain enviroment running on Windows 2008 R2 domain controller, I've just updated my laptop with Windows 8 Pro ( al other PC here are still Windows 7 ) and I'm facing a litle issue with GPO drive maps.
I have many Drive maps object affected to my users that work fines, the problem I have is when I disconect my laptop from the network and reboot, all network drive disappears and I don't have access to any of my "offline" files on those drives.
I built my own PC last year and I've done several OS upgrades in that time frame. First I started with windows 7 basic which I then promptly upgraded to 7 ultimate because my university offered upgrades for $7. I then upgraded to 8 when it first came out and then 8.1 too. I put a new SSD in my PC and copied all my 8.1 data on to it I then turned the old SSD in to a second boot drive for OS X. I'm having problems with 8.1. I wanted to create a repair drive to hopefully root out and fix whatever is causing windows explorer to crash. It's not a virus I've made sure of that. I have a feeling whatever caused this happened when I upgraded to 8.1 and then copied over the SSD. What my product key is for 8.1 pro i just found the email microsoft sent me with my windows 8 key but i have no disc.
when i followed the instructions to make a recovery drive it told me that some of the required files are missing and to use a windows installation disc or media which is a problem because all my windows 8 upgrades have been done online.
also my PC currently doesn't have a disc drive i removed it because i only ever used it to install windows 7 basic.
Everything I can find to get round this problem involves right clicking on the HD->properties->Security->Owner and then going on to changing a few settings.
There is no owner tab! Is this an 8.1 thing? Have they removed it? Van I get it back?
I was trying to locate some files in my user folders in Windows 8 I was looking for the app data files to restore my email from an old version to a new clean install of the client. I could not find the folder although I knew it existed as this is where the app is storing my email, so I figured it was hidden. I started to look for the setting I knew in 7 that would allow you to see hidden files when you ran the folder properties. The only thing I saw anywhere about hidden files was on the first page of the properties where it says read only and hidden so I checked the box and told it to apply. (I know, stupid thing to do since I did not understand what it was doing. This is so unlike me) Now I do not have any user folders and not much works. How can I restore my user files?

My Windows 8 computer is not connecting to the internet even tho it is connected to the internet via ethernet cord. Also My computer is moving incredibly slow and I cannot even get to the control panel, much less edit the network options. When I try to do so, my computer freezes up.
