When I shut down my computer, I get this thing that a program is preventing shutdown. It doesn't tell what's the name of the program, it only says that "This program is preventing shutdown".
Can any hacker see my webcam or my pictures without putting any malware or virus to my computer and without me doing anything so they can see me?
My computer is HP Pavilion 15 with Windows 8.1.
Why does Windows Defender want to scan my PC so often? I have it scheduled to scan daily at about 2:30 AM. Sometimes after about 4 hours it says I need to scan.

I am trying to do a windows schedule scan, but when I set it I am getting this (see attached)
For some odd reason WD keeps telling me I need to do a scan (it's in orange in WD) even though I do a scan everyday via the Task Scheduler. After any kind of scan it resets itself (I don't need to scan, green in color). Some time period later it tells me a scan is needed.
Is there some option that controls how often WD tells you to do a scan?
This started happening about a week or so ago. I don't have anything running on my system that IMO is doing this.
It is advisable not to do a full scan for the moment. There was a problem in the latest definition update and in some cases after doing a full scan, if it completes, Windows Defender has been turned off.
Microsoft is aware of the problem and is working on it.
In Windows 7 I used to be able to right click on a file and one of my choices was to scan with Microsoft security essentials, but that's no longer in my right click menu.
How do I go about doing a manual scan on just one file using Microsoft's (I guess it's now Defender) Security Essentials in Windows 8?
Each time I run my backup program (SynchBack SE) I get the following message;
"Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer",
which I always say 'Yes' to.
Now, I understand this is a security feature, and I think I can probably inhibit this by changing the User Access Controls (UAC). However, what I really want to do is to confirm this program can run, and not be asked again, whereas I think the UAC is a more global setting. Is there a solution to this that won't mean tweaking the UAC level?
The reason why I am wary about tweaking the UAC level is because I 'think' this will be system wide, and I don't want to reduce security for all users on my PC.
Or, maybe I have just got UAC all wrong, I am not clear TBH on all the in's and out's of UAC.

I have just made a clean install of Windows 8 Pro. Then I installed a couple of apps. I noticed that at the root of Windows 8 drive there are only folders and no files shown such as bootmgr, BOOTNXT, etc.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have had this happen once before, I am running Windows 8 on an OCZ Vertex 4 SSD.The problem is that suddenly all my files inside all the directories and sub directories in my Documents folder have been moved to the root of Documents and have all been named with their original directory location in the filename. To give a clear example: a file originally located in Rockstar GamesL.A. Noiresettings.ini is now in my root Documents folder under the name Rockstar Games_L.A. Noire_settings.ini
All of the folders and sub-folders in my Documents are empty and all of the files are in Documents with those names. They all follow the pattern of having the directory in the filename separated by underscores . I have over 11K files now sitting in my Documents and all my programs that require files in my Documents folder are now broken.
Got Win8 Pro Retail genuine installed and have a multi partitioned PC.
I am Administrator, and I have UIC set to its lowest possible setting.
I cannot copy any files to the C: Drive (root)... every time I get an error message and it will not let me do anything with the root.
So, I ran gpedit.msc and did these steps..
1. Run gpedit.msc, navigate and browse to Computer Configuration--Windows Settings--Security Settings--Local Policies--Security Options
2. Set policy User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators - Elevate without prompting
3. Set policy User Account Control: Detect application installations and prompt for elevation - Disabled
4. Set policy User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode - Disabled
OK, now perfect - I have full control of the root drive again... But this sparked another major issue with the 'modern apps' (metro)...
All modern/metro apps will now NOT RUN because they want UIC turned on (as in change those settings back I just tweaked).....
As soon as I turn UIC back on.... metro apps work - and I am blocked from my root drive again.
I cannot find how to open root folder instead of the libraries folder. It seems the way I did it in Win7 will not work.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have windows 8 with the upgrade. I bought this computer from someone who reinstalled the operating system so he could sell it. The root user name is John Doe. I adjusted settings and tried to rename with my name however the ROOT user is still John Doe. I've heard I can create a new account and "move" all my files to my new account, thus essentially renaming the computer. I've heard all that changes is the "pointer". Exactly, which files I need to move so I can delete the "John Doe" user?

I am running a Win 7 OS on an SSD and I have some programs installed on a different hard drive. And I want to move this program files folder on the same hard drive but different partition. Is it possible to do this without breaking the program links?

But now 10 years later on windows 8.1 ....
Initially on Win7, I was manually updating Security Essentials when was offline from this link:
How to manually download the latest definition updates for Microsoft Security Essentials
You choose x86 or x64 and go from there.
What's not mentioned, is that you can use the same links to update Windows Defender on Windows 8 as well.
I've been doing this for quite some time without issues. So the two programs are very much alike.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhich registry settings should I change to set the top two default Windows rules back to 'Unrestricted' ?
I set up some rules in the local security policy some time ago when there was fuss in the news about the cryptolocker virus. They looked a lot like the rules above (I found that screenshot online as I can't take one myself, read on..)
Today I was installing some software that wanted access to the areas I restricted. I temporarily disabled the rules, then re-enabled them. Being a dumbass I also set the top two rules (which are Windows default rules) to Disallowed!
Over the following 10 minutes various aspects of my PC stopped working, telling me that the local security policy prevented access. I couldn't even get into the Control Panel or the Local Security Policy screen to change it back, once I realised what I had done. I rebooted the machine - it won't come back up
I've tried a system restore by booting from the installer on USB (which did not work, it grumbled that it could not restore due a file locked by anti-virus) so I think I've got two options:
Refresh my system using the Windows 8 tools - but I suspect that might leave the LSP rules in place, as it retains my settings & preferences.Hand edit the registry to correct the settings.
Option 2 is looking best, I can get into RegEdit from the recovery console, but I'm not sure what to edit and what to set it to? This is on Windows 8.1 Pro...
I see there is no right click scan for virus with windows defender on windows 8. How to add that functionality?
I found a site that shows how to add it via regedit, but I couldn't get it working on my machine.
I did the system scan and it says that i have a corrupted cbs.log file and its unable to fix.

How to fix the windows or without reinstalling it ? I'm using Windows 8 i tried to upgrade to 8.1 but didnt work also.
I came to some trouble installing CorelDraw software which apparently uses for it's setup launcher web active container performed by IE core. If I launch setup, the setup windows is evidently noninitialized showing the top warning band about active content being blocked for security reasons. Even allowing active content by selecting from the top bar menu doesn't make the setup continue. So now I'd need to temporarily bypass all IE's security checks, ie. allow everything. What I already did was browsing the security tab in IE options and allowing most of the choices in branches ActiveX controls and plugin modules + Scripting (Local Intranet). On Advanced tab I have checked in Security branch Allow execution of active content from CD discs on this computer + Allow execution of active content from files on this computer. Nothing of these affecting the installer to run (ie. I still see then active content blocking bar).

o.k. long story short before installing 8.1.1 in my real environment i tested it out extensively in vm. i found out that if you get past a certain point with the windows updates bitdefender will not install, if you install bd prior to a certain point it installs and works great even after you do the rest of the windows updates. How to get it installed and working correctly in a fully updated 8.1.1? i have eset smart security in, but i'd rather have my bitdefender.

Scanning device is an HP Photosmart All in One HP 2575. i first installed it as an USB device and Windows Fax and Scan recognized it and scanned nicely. I then installed it as a network device and WFS would not recognize it as a scanning device when I unplugged the USB cable. It prints just fine but will not scan.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I turn on my Toshiba Satellite laptop, it does not see my i-phone hotspot. Wi-Fi status says "No Wi-Fi connections available". I always have to turn the hotspot off and then back on after the laptop is up and running for the laptop to find it. This does not happen with my desktop. It sees the i-phone hotspot without the need to cycle the hotspot off and back on, so I'm thinking that it has to do with the Toshiba rather than the i-phone. Both laptop and desktop are running Windows 8. Not a big problem, but I thought some one may know of a setting which I need to change.
