I have chosen notepad as default program for .dat file, what can I do to set it to open with "unknown application" like I never open it before?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows 8.1 and I have an old version of photoshop elements in my x86 program files (it's elements 4.0). I have UAC on the next to last setting before disabling it altogether. When I launch elements, UAC asks me if I trust it because it's an unknown publisher. I don't want to disable UAC, but I want it to trust elements and not popup the "are you really sure" box each time.

I am running a Win 7 OS on an SSD and I have some programs installed on a different hard drive. And I want to move this program files folder on the same hard drive but different partition. Is it possible to do this without breaking the program links?
View 9 Replies View RelatedStarted using my freshly installed Windows 8.1 Pro this week...When i go to a file (any filetype...i tried like 10..) and click "choose default program..." in the context menu, the following error message will always come up:
Sure i can go to Config panel > Select default programs etc.But this is odd... since i am 100% confident it used to work fine before.I already did a 'sfc /scannow' checkup with an original 8.1 Pro x64 image but it says integrity is completely fine.
Could it be a random piece of software i uninstalled which was perhaps freeware and did not state it was Windows 8 compatible, leaving a cluttered registry key which is affecting this command from my context menu?
I have Windows 8.1 and on my desktop are several PNG files and shortcuts. When I double click on any of them the program that opens is Directory Opus (I use this instead of Windows Explorer). I checked the defaults and it is NOT Directory Opus.

Background: I have been using windows since 3.11 when I was in second grade and we got rid of our DOS box. I consider myself a proficient user to highly proficient user, having built 4 of my own machines. I have installed Office 2010 Professional and the program works.
Setup: Lenovo ideapad y500 purchased January 2013 with Windows 8
Problem: Windows will not allow me to set Word 2010 as my default program for opening .docx or other valid formats. I can open the documents from within the program, just not by default.
Steps Taken:
1) Right-click file > choose default program > Word 2010 not available > browse for and specify location > set program to default. Result = System Message "This app can't run on your pc."
2) Consulted Microsoft support site to search for solution. Same result.
Desired Resolution: how to set that default application. All of you who read this are also annoyed with Microsoft's awful customer service.
When I am at a web site that contains .JPG images, I can right click on the image to forward it to a third party as an email attachment. I have done this in the past using Vista. However, I receive an error message, saying that I do not have a default email program established, and that I should set one up as a default program.
My Windows 8 laptop came with a Mail email program established. I used Control Panel to verify that this program exists for default email applications. Is there something else that I need to establish in order to enable Mail to act as a default program?
1-the color of task bar and the borders of the windows is red , how can i change it to default of win 8 or other colors?
2-when we go to the search in the charms bar we see the picture below
is there a way to add our favourite programs(.exe files) to this part?
I have accidently set my .ext default program to Notepad and I want to change it back to an unknown application I have tried deleting it in regedit and it just sets it back to notepad even when I restart my computer afterwards
View 9 Replies View RelatedScenario: A cpu-heavy program - which windows often reports as "not responding" because it takes time to process stuff - for which I want to change the process priority to anything I.
Issue: Even if I don't change process priority for the program, Windows 8 thinks he's the boss and decides to put it at "below normal", which has an impact on the performance of the program. If I change priority, it will just put it back to below normal.
Unfortunately, I rushed and let wordpad open all my .htaccess files, now I don't have the extension to see them and I can't seem to restore them.
I tried to remove the extension from the registry ROOT, but it did nothing and I still have the icon and no .HTACCESS extension.
Using Win 8.1
I remember when I was using Windows 7 I accidentally found a short key that toggles between the same program e.g. between different windows of a single browser, but forgot what this combination was.
I know on Mac you can do this by CMD+` I believe.
Is there a better than decent way to get to the program list in windows 8, similar to the one we used to have on the start menu, without installing 3rd party applications?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried downloading AutoCAD on my laptop, but got an error message. I removed the McAfee which came with Windows, but no luck. I then also removed AVG and it managed to download.
I've then attempted to restart, however the 'Toshiba Leading Innovation' screen simply kept flashing at the start up and didn't continue.
After approximately 15 minutes of flashing, it's now stopped and the page is static.
It's been just over 20 minutes total now, and the page continues to be static with the fan making more noise than usual.
I've powered down twice, but this keeps happening...
Should I re-install windows?
I just got Windows 8.
1. How to UNINSTALL a program.
2. How to Make a short cut in the charm or task bar in win7.
I'm using Windows 8.1 x64, and I'm unable to set a task or program at windows startup. I've tried everything:
A. Task Scheduler
B. Shortcut to "Programs/startup"
C. Set the program itself in its options (this method works with some programs, but not everyone, and of course, not every program has an option to start whith Windows)
D. Run as administrator, propieties and give permissions, privileges... etc
Nothing happens. I've checked in the Task Manager tab STARTUP for the programs I set up, and they are all there, in that list. But they never run. What can I do?
In Windows XP it was as easy as add a simple shorcut to the "Progams/Startup" folder. Now it seems to be impossible.
I am unable to save files to the desktop and every time I click it, I would get that error.
View 4 Replies View Relatedin Windows-8 when i try to delete folder i got the message: "The action cant be completed because the folder or file in it is open in another program" i check and close all program, i dont see it in the task-manager (if i reset the computer, and try again it will delete it)
another problem in Windows-8, when i copy, or delete folder - i cant see the action until i press F5 for refresh
I've been getting errors everytime that I open a program (ANY and EVERY program). When booted into safe mode I'm not getting any errors. Here's some pictures of me opening google chrome, skype, and Windows Media Player.
It seems to be the exact same error for all of them and the only program that DOESNT seem to give me the error is paint. As soon as I click "ok", the program opens like normal but this is incredibly annoying.
This error started immediately after I installed Windows 8 from Windows 7, I might add.
For some reason I cannot do anything in my Program Files for one of my hard drives. My C drive seems to be fine, as well as my 2 other drives. But in my F drive, Ive broken down the program files into a normal one and x86 one. I can basically access every other folder expect the Program Files in F drive. Program Files (x86) in the same drive works perfectly fine. Everytime i try to add a new folder or delete anything in my Program Files folder it says destination folder access denied and i need permission.
Ive tried fiddling with all the UAC and permissions but nothing seems to work.I even tried the command prompt :
"4. To Take Ownership of a Folder or Drive in a Command Prompt. NOTE: This command will take ownership of the folder or drive, and all files and subfolders in the folder or drive."
method but it says Access is Denied in my command prompt.
I have three Autohotkey exe files in my appdata Startup folder of my laptop but they do not get started when Windows starts. Those same three files on my desktop in the same place start and run just fine. Each machine has the same version of Windows 8, Home Premium 64 build 9200.
If I open the Startup folder and click on any one of the files they start and run just fine.
In the registry for the desktop those three files appear in startup folder but not in laptop. Am almost sure that is the problem but don't have a clue what to do about it.
On both machines, Yankee Clipper III runs at start without me having to put it in either of my appdata Startup folders. I guess the installer took care of it for me.
I have Windows 8.1. I also use Start8 so my desktop looks like Windows 7. When I try and clean up the start menu, by deleting short cuts of programs I don't use, like metro apps (PC Settings & Store) once I delete these short cuts I can no longer access PC settings or Store. When I click PC settings in the Metro Menu it does nothing. Same with Store app. If I restore the deleted short cuts to these programs it works again. I've tried to hide these programs from the start menu but that option to hide is greyed out.
A; Hide these apps from the start menu without deleting them.
B. Delete them from the start menu but have them still work in the Metro Menu.
I've just uninstalled RealPlayer on Windows 8, but I am unable to remove the link from the list after clicking "Choose default program" from "Open with". I've already gone through this: Open with - Clean Up and Remove Programs - Windows 7 Forums, but it still wouldn't work. How to remove it?

Is there anyway that for gives me administrative rights for all eternity? Because having problems installing a standard programs is getting tedious!
Using Windows 8 (Not 8.1)
When I exit / close [any program / application] I am presented with the old Windows 7 Desktop. Old W7 Desktop is the default when I close a program -- even if I started the program from Metro UI. I wish to see the Metro UI when I close any application. I do not like the extra keyboard press of the Windows key. How can I change Windows 8 such that I default to the Metro UI when I exit [close] any application?
