Jun 3, 2013I've had this problem for awhile, finding strange but not necessarily harmful files, and wondering which program created them, so I can determine if they're safe to delete. I would have to install a program that monitors/records all files written to the HDD. Unless there is another way.

Sep 30, 2013I have a very frustrating issue with Windows 8 where my software disappears when I select to open an existing file from within the parent program. It is not minimized and it is not 'off' the screen. I open task manager, and it doesn't exist as a process in any state. The program is Xilinx's ISE for programming FPGA boards.
Before, I get the obvious response that it is an issue with the ISE gui and not Windows 8, I've had a similar problem in another program in Windows 8 in which when I tried to create a new folder in a select file dialog box to save a file, the program would disappear. (Though, I don't recall which program that was.) It's as the program closes completely! (I'm lovin' Linux even more now.)
Win 8 Lenovo Laptop - Phantom File When Running VB6 Program
Jun 3, 2014I have a Lenovo laptop running Windows 8.1. I run a number of VB6 programs. One is an estimating system that makes use of .dat files. When I first install the program and the files, everything works fine.
The problem comes when I 'over-write' a .dat file with a newer version, with some basic cost changes (the file updated on a different computer which contains VB6). As I 'paste' from a USB stick it asks if I want to over-write, which I obviously agree to.
However, as I run the program, I still appear to be using data from the previous file! The latest update figures are ignored.
To check this out further, I have even deleted (removed completely) the .dat file from the appropriate directory, but when running the program it still inputs data from the original file.
This leads me to believe there must be another copy of the file open somewhere (hence the phantom!), possibly as a 'last used' reference.
I have been on to the taskbar and ensured I have unchecked the two boxes about retaining files etc.
8.1 Choose Default Program - Always Gives Error Message
Oct 29, 2013Started using my freshly installed Windows 8.1 Pro this week...When i go to a file (any filetype...i tried like 10..) and click "choose default program..." in the context menu, the following error message will always come up:
Sure i can go to Config panel > Select default programs etc.But this is odd... since i am 100% confident it used to work fine before.I already did a 'sfc /scannow' checkup with an original 8.1 Pro x64 image but it says integrity is completely fine.
Could it be a random piece of software i uninstalled which was perhaps freeware and did not state it was Windows 8 compatible, leaving a cluttered registry key which is affecting this command from my context menu?

Error Message Pasting A File From One HDD To Another
Jan 22, 2014As of late I have been getting the Error Message
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
I frequently Copy or "Cut and Paste" Files from one HDD to another and to this day never had any problems doing so.
I just Installed a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 Pro (retail) to my C Drive and am assuming that it must be a setting inside Windows 8 that I am not seeing.
The Admin Account on this Machine is Disabled. I did not change it it was that way after Install.

Sep 15, 2014You see his laptop is in a constant rebooting session it keeps trying to reboot and reboot and reboot. And gives me that error message above. I CANT NOT, I REPEAT CANNOT GET TO THE OS SYSTEM meaning that i cant get to the start menu or anything like that. Also when i tried to select automatic repair it tries to load it then gives me the same error above. The Computer my friend has is a HP Spectre XT running windows 8 64 bit. Also the only thing, I could get to is the boot menu which has the OS boot manager which keeps rebooting and stuff. Then select a EFI file from the hard disk drive.

It just slows my computer up and hasn't fried anything yet, However i was able to download AVG and stop any major issues from occurring. I have no idea what that means especially considering I am the SYSTEM as far as I am concerned with this computer. Somehow my firewall and antivirus had been disabled months ago and I know I didn't do it. This was a couple of weeks ago. Since then, I have been fighting to keep my computer alive.

File:BCD Error Code : 0xc000000d ............................" I'm sure you are all familiar with the rest of this dreaded error code.
I've tried all the repair options, recovery disks to a windows 8 bootable flash disk, the command prompt fix boot commands as well but still I get the same error message whenever i try to boot windows.
Now I'd like to know, can't i just copy the boot folders from another similar windows 8 pc and paste them into my harddrive to fix this?
W8.1 File (Windows) Explorer Sort Sequence Error

Extended Attributes Are Inconsistent Error On Running EXE File
Jan 14, 2013I am using windows 8 pro with two users one of which is administrator. The problem is that when i am in the other account (non administrator) i am unable to install anything in it.
As soon i run an .exe file , i get the error ""The extended attributes are inconsistent"" on googling, i found that it can be resolved by disabling the sound of UAC but this didn't work for me.

Can't Delete WMA Desktop File (Error 0x80070057) With Picture
Sep 12, 2013I have a Windows 8 64-bit Sony laptop.
I was deleting old unused folders on my Desktop when I ran into this wma file called "Untitled1" that doesn't play.
I remember one point in time it was useable and worked normally, but for some reason it won't now.
I just want this annoying file gone forever and I've been trying to search up the error code it keeps giving me (Error 0x80070057), but no such luck in solving my problem.
I also searched up "How to delete undeletable files" and tried some things out, but none of the ones that seemed closest to my problem worked out...

Debugging :: BSOD During Various Activities No Error Code / Dump File
Sep 15, 2014For the past few weeks I have been experiencing random, albeit infrequent, BSOD's.
1. Occurred while using Thunderbird
2. Occurred while using Firefox
3. Occurred while playing Dota 2
I had several processes open behind the programs listed.
What tends to happen is that the mouse and/or keyboard stops working before the computer crashes. Then it stalls at the Bios screen and will not boot up without a restart.
A few things:
1. The CPU is overclocked, but the overclock was working well on prior installations.
The other systems used MBR as opposed to GPT which the current system uses. (Don't know if this matters).
2. I made a few changes to the system settings to try and optimize my SSD (see: The SSD Optimization Guide Redesigned | The SSD Review and SSD tweaker)
I plan to run Memtest and Prime95.
