I just upgraded to 8.1 update 1 officially via Technet. As expected, SkyDrive has been renamed to OneDrive. However, if I look at my OneDrive folders via Properties | Location it still points to a SkyDrive folder. Even software that I use to store backups on my OneDrive folder still point to SkyDrive even though there is no folder with that name. If I try to change it to OneDrive I get folder not found.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am connecting a 640GB Samsung G2 Portable External Hard Drive to my HP Pavilion 15 Laptop.
The external hard drive works on other desktop and laptop computers here at work, but when connected to the HP Pavilion (Windows 8.1 OS) it shows up as a Local Disk (H: but when trying to Open the drive it says:
"Location Not Available H: is not accessible The device is not ready."
What should I do?
The issue is finding the file location for my flash drive. My computer only has 3 external USB ports. I have tried all of them, when the flash drive is plugged in somewhere on my computer it should indicate another drive location. I can't find anything....not sure where to look or if I'm looking in the right place. All that shows is c: drive & E: drive. The E: drive is exclusive for the OS system restore (can't be used; not accessible for anything else). The only other is the DVD drive. Nowhere can I find evidence of the flash drive plugged into the USB.
I have all the essential drivers & everything is up to date [I have a task scheduler & Driver updater software installed. All drivers are up to date. This is a new computer, only 2 months old].
I have gone into device manager & checked all the USB & composite serial bus controllers to make sure they are powered on (my computer has an energy saving management thing & it will possibly deactivate the hubs when not in use). According to the power management settings they are not set to "sleep" but all ports are active. I can't figure out why I can't find my drive, nothing is appearing when I have the flash drive plugged in.
I'm trying to migrate my old XP Firefox persdict.dat file content over to Windows 8. It is not where it was supposed to be.

The only persdict.dat file I can find is for Thunderbird. (I'm fairly certain the apps don't share a file.) I go to Firefox and type something into a random website's comments (dorkdorkdork), and right click and save that to the Firefox custom dictionary, but I'm not able to find that string anywhere on the PC? So if I go to C: and F3 to search for dorkdorkdork, it should be able to find that text on the machine right? Since the unique text is in a standard unencrypted text file.
I'm booting off my SSD which is drive C: and I have games and programs on an extra hard drive which was origanally drive H: but after a restart it switched to I: and when I go into Disk Management to change it Drive H: isn't there.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Essentials, it's filled with tons of old photos, movies, docs, games, and I'm scared to think of what else. The SATA to USB connector broke on it, so I took the drive apart and put it inside my computer. I opened up device manager because it wasn't showing up automatically and the 2TB is showing up as unallocated, I'm freaking out now because I'm scared the data was somehow deleted.What do I do?
edit: I realize also this isn't directly related to Windows 8 (besides the fact it's the OS I'm on), but I don't know where else to post it. I'd also like to say that I had a really deep feeling the drive was going to break continually for about two weeks before it happened, so if you have a similar feeling about something, don't ignore it!
When I go to Computer Management my main (OS) drive shows as "Disk 1" and my 2nd internal data drive shows as "Disk 0". Should I switch the SATA cables so that the main drive will show as "Disk 0 and the 2nd internal drive as "Disk 1"?

I just want to transfer all the data from my old computer. This was pretty much all in the folder c:>Users>Myname, but when I try to transfer it all into the same folder on the new computer, obviously with 100gb there is not enough space.

When I launch Macrium, for some reason my SSD is now GPT 1 and the second drive is now GPT 2. This is confusing because I'm used to imaging the top line of partitions which is usually my OS. Now that the GPT numbers are reversed, I have to be careful when doing my backups. How to change this assignment so that the SSD will be GPT1 again?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm in the process of moving to an SSD and need to create a backup drive in order to repair the BIOS after transferring everything. However, when I try to create one - the create a recovery drive program won't recognize the flash drive I have connected as a flash drive.
I first tried with a SanDisk Cruzer which apparently had a quirk in that it shows up as a hard drive instead of removable flash drive. That seems to be well documented on forums all over the place and there is no fix.
So, I purchased a cheap 8 GB stick (no brand) and Windows (I'm running 8.1 x64) recognizes it as a removable disk. However, the create a backup utility still won't recognize it. I've found some random fixes that have worked for some (such as plugging it into a different USB port) but nothing has worked for me so far. I've tried doing it with the "copy the recovery partition" option both checked and unchecked.
If there's no solution to this wonderful "quirk" of Windows, then is there something else I can do to repair BIOS? Seems like there's not a fix to my problem out there...
EDIT So as of right now, I tried using HPs recovery software which seems to do the same thing as copying over your entire recovery partition. That didn't work either. However..when I had both USB sticks plugged in the Windows supplied utility recognized the SanDisk Cruzer when I checked the "copy the partition" thing

pc bought in 2013 with windows 8 bundled (so no installation DVDs, no activation key communicated).
upgraded to windows 8.1 in 2013.
I made a recovery USB (system image) on 1st April 2014.
If I need to boot on this USB, my PC will be again exactly as it was on 1st April 2014?
I know there is good software out there to clone/image my hard drive and restore it to a new SSD drive. I'm just wondering though, since my laptop is brand new, I made a full recovery to a USB drive and included the OEM recovery partition.
Couldn't I just swap out the old HDD with the new SSD and boot with the recovery stick and do a full recovery back to the new SSD?
Also, however I do this, recover or image backup/restore, do I need to do some type of SSD alignment? I can't find a clear answer on that.
I just purchased an Asus R510CC notebook with windows 8 and I bought a SSD drive to replace the current one.
I used Recovery Drive in Windows to create an USB boot drive with the recovery partition on it. I then installed the SSD and booted from the USB. When I get to the option to reset my computer I encounter an error with the following message: "Unable to reset PC. A required drive partition is missing". I already did a bit of research and BIOS tweaking but I can't install Windows onto my SSD.
I am wanting to install my W8 O/S onto a 64GB SSD drive. I just want to use this for boot purposes and to fit some programs on as well. Everything else I am wanting to have stored on a 1TB WD Black drive. I want to point my libraries (Docs, Music, pictures) towards the 1TB drive. How do I do this?

I had to power it off. When I restarted I noticed some of my programs weren't starting properly. Well I looked for a restore point an only found one. Before I had at least 6 or 8. My question is where have they gone. Is there a place where windows stores them, and is there a way to recover them?
I've been running Windows 8 since 10/27 and just noticed there were no System Restore points. Doesn't Windows 8 automatically create them when a significant event occurs, like Windows Update?
I created one manually but would like to see Win 8 create them.
Prior to doing a system restore with a third party imaging program which was successful and saved the day, I noticed all the restore points were gone. They were there as I check each day/Why did they disappear as they never used to?

I've had this problem for a year with windows 8 (now 8.1) and I think I even had it with 7. Before that it never seemed to be a problem.
After refreshing my Windows 8 PC (I did not realise all the problems it would cause like loosing my email ,some apps and some programs) , I tried a system restore but I can't get any restore points before the refreshing time to reset the PC as it used to be.

When I click System/System Protection, click the [System Restore] button and choose the "Choose a different restore point" radio button, I am only offered a single restore point. I understand that some users also see a radio box reading "Show more restore points," but I have no such option. Is there a download available or some other way to see more than one restore point? I tried restoring in the hope that I could then see a prior restore point, but not such luck. The reason I need to do so is that I'm getting an annoying malware pop up in my browser and going back a restore point (or two) seems to be the only way I can find to make them stop displaying.
When I wanted to fix my Windows 8.1 because it wouldn't start, I saw ALL my restore points had disappeared. This has happened to me with all Windows operating systems I've had: Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and perhaps XP. When I need them most, they're gone, ALL OF THEM (not only those replaced for newer ones).
Last time this happened, Windows 8.1 eventually fixed my system by applying "attempting repairs" (however this fix is called, it's an option when 8.1 cannot boot).
But why do the restore points disappear in Windows 7, 8 and 8.1? Can I save at least one to a disk or something? Instead of creating a system image, which is heavy and slow?.

I recently had to reset my Internet Explorer settings to remove Conduit Search hijacker. This stopped explorer7fixes.dll from working in File Explorer, because it was loaded into IE as an 'addon'. Now I cannot get it to work no matter how much I unregister and re-register the Explorer7Fixes.1.0.0.2 version of the .dll, and this is even after restarting explorer.exe/restarting/shutting down.
System Restore fixed this problem for me the last time it happened (I restored back to a time when explorer7fixes.dll was working), but it appears that won't work this time as my restore points are corrupted. Gives the error code (0x81000201)

Is there any way to stop Win 8 automatically creating restore points, but still allow manual creation of points? Or at least "protect" important restore points.
I recently decided to restore a manual point to find Win 8 has deleted all of my points and replaced with "others". I realize I could increase the storage area, but I don't want that, as I'm always short of disc space.
Is it possible to mirror the C drive? I have an external HD I want to use and I've created an NTFS partiton on the external drive but when I right click on the C drive or the partition on the external HD it doesn't give me the option to Add Mirror. I'm running 8.1 Pro.

How is this possible unless my del laptop has somehow retained my old image? My other thought was that after reinstallation I signed back into my Microsoft account and this has somehow recognised my old desktop? If the latter is so then why retain just the desktop image and no other images?
View 5 Replies View RelatedIs there any way to make Windows 8 apps that rely on libraries (music, pics, vids) work with content stored on a separate physical drive? I NEVER use the libraries contained in the OS's user profiles. I always keep all data content on a separate physical HDD.
I tried to add my Photos library on my data HDD to my Pictures library, then went to the Photos app, but it only showed blank boxes for the various folders. It didn't show any pics, except for one single pic in one single folder in that whole library.
What do I need to do?
I have the famous blue screen of death for the first time. I am using windows 8.1. Every time I try to boot into my rig, it says that:"windows has encountered some problems and need to restart". I am using another computer to write this message but most of all I have absolutely no clue how to resolve the issue. Restore Points were turned off in the rig to save space - Not my idea but it is what it is I have no back up - I am starting my rig and as soon as I get to the log in screen, the unit restart to a blue screen. I have a couple of options but most of them can't since I have no back up and no restore point.
When the rig restarts, I land on a blue page with 1 continue 2 troubleshoot 3 turn off your PC I choose 2 (because of tools). Then I have: 1 Refresh you PC: I need the refresh more than my PC 2 Reset your PC. It says if you want to remove all your files. Definitely not what I want to do. 3 Advanced options I choose 3 and then I get: 1 System Restore: No restore point so useless 2 System Image Recovery: No backup so useless 3 Start Up Repair: Tried that but no go 4 Command prompt: Tried that but I have no clue on how to move forward once on command prompt. 5 Start Up Behavior I picked that one and went option 1 to 4. 4 being the option that allowed to log into the unit in safe mode. Once I am in Safe Mode what should I be doing ?
