Windows 8 Search Cannot Find Any Videos
Dec 16, 2013I thought that Windows 7 search was bad until I started trying to search for my many videos in my win 8 laptop. I even used KIND:= VIDEOS but the search came up empty???? This frustration never used to happen with win XP. I tried all manner of searches and although I have hundreds of videos still the search could not find a single one. Any third party search that is at least as good as XPs? I often do searches and need to use wildcards because of the plethora of files I have. If possible I would prefer a free search application.
I use the excellent Classic Shell. With my fast booting win 8 (fast booting is the only positive thing about win 8 I have encountered so far).
Windows 8.1 Search Can't Find Files
Dec 7, 2013I figured out how to search but Windows 8.1 stopped searching for files. I type a word in the window and nothing happens after I hit enter.
I searched the web and suggestions say to use the charms menu but I haven't figured out how to search a thumb drive with the charms menu search.
When I insert a thumbdrive, the window opens and I type in the Search Toshiba (G) box and hit enter and nothing comes up and Windows can't find its own files on a thumb drive but it works on the C drive.
I keep turning on another computer with Windows XP to do searches or I use Windows 7 and I can get around a little.
The screen shots on the internet doesn't seem to work or relate with my system.
Search Charm Does Not Find Files

Feb 7, 2014After updating to 8.1, windows search is slow, even though I disabled Bing and I don't have extra locations in the index, and it doesn't find files even though they are in subfolders of My Documents. This problem is very outstanding with Word files.
I tried deleting the Data folder, and rebuilding the index, but to no avail. I need a way to search for text within files, so the "Everything" app does not seem to be the solution. I am trying out AgentRansack right now, and it does work, but it is slow and uses up almost all the CPU when it is searching.

Sep 13, 2013I was working on desktop mode and suddenly my screen went black. After about 4 seconds everything returned to normal but when I went to the Start screen all of my application tiles were missing. Except for Desktop & Store tiles, all the others had disappeared. I tried to search the missing apps and pin it to Start but it cannot be found. They wont even show in All apps.
I don't think the apps are deleted because from desktop I can open image/audio files with Photos and Music app.
Not sure if the problem maybe a result of me accidently changing the AppData folder to visible a couple of minutes earlier.
Hardware Drivers :: Search Find Files On Backup Drive
Feb 21, 2014I'm not sure how far reaching this is but I just noticed that when I select a folder and type a file name in the search bar on the right of the address bar, files are found on my backup drive, which is attached by USB to the PC, this drive is attached because it contains other partitions for file storage.
The folder in this case was on the desktop and it shows that it is on C: Drive, but files were found on the H: Drive which is where I run my backup to.
When I un-attach the H drive the files found do not respond to left or right click.

Nov 10, 2012I was a heavy user of the Windows 7 desktop search, either by the taskbar or the start menu. I most often used it to find emails, especially when I didn't remember which of my many accounts received the item. It worked across Outlook 2010, Live Mail, and Thunderbird.
Is it somewhere hidden in Windows 8? If not, is there an alternative? I believe the mail is still being indexed so it may only be a client that accesses the database that is needed.

I have a C drive as my OS drive, and D drive for my documents.
My D drive (formatted as NTFS) has indexing switched on.
But, when I go into indexing options / modify / show all locations, my D drive is not displayed.
I just can't figure it out, this worked just fine under windows 7. I checked the drive authorities and I am the owner to the drive root+ all subfolders and have full authorisation to drive root + subfolders also.
Remote Desktop Application - Cannot Find PC
Dec 2, 2013I am running windows 8 professional on my home PC and running windows 8 home on my Venue 8 Pro. I downloaded the remote desktop app on my Venue and setup a connection to my home PC. It was very easy and worked (at least on my home network) Now the first time I tried to access the computer outside my home it says that it can't find the PC. Is the connection only good with me being on the home network? Do I have to install some third party VPN to access it?

Mar 2, 2013Well, last night, I had noticed that there was no desktop tile and if I typed "desktop" on the start screen there was no app for it Also, "Change PC Settings" wasn't starting. My guess is that it did that because I had a really hard time uninstalling a program so I had to try going by means of registry editing. So I ended up refreshing my computer (from the installation disc since PC settings wasn't working ) Now everything is back to normal. So all I want to know is how I can prevent this from happening again.

Dec 11, 2013I have tried to find older topics and tutorials on this without success. This is new to me so hopefully there's something very simple to address the issue.
I have 3 computers. 1 x Win 8 Pro and 2 x Win 8 Standard.
I know only the Win 8 Pro machine can be a Remote Desktop host.
In System Properties I have checked the box to "allow Remote Assistance to this computer" (I don't know detail, but I am aware this is something different to Remote Desktop).
Also in System Properties, I have selected to "Allow remote connections to this computer". I have also tried to check the sub-section of that "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (recommended)".
All computers are set up at home, connected to a regular home router.
When I try to connect to the host machine I get an error (I don't have details of that right now, but its some generic "no connection" error).
Can't Find Show Desktop Tile On Metro Start Screen
Mar 4, 2012I upgraded to the CP a few days ago and just noticed a huge problem. The "Show Desktop" tile that is normally on the start screen be default has gone missing. I can't figure out how I got rid of it in the first place, but is there some way to add it back?
I have changed the title to more accurately reflect the problem. A bunch of the features that come with Windows 8 CP (the tablet friendly Settings page, Remote Desktop, the show desktop tile, The Windows Store, etc) all vanished shortly after I installed Windows 8. I tried reinstalling and the same thing happened again.

Nov 9, 2013Windows 8 search refuses to search items in my control panel. For example, if I tap the windows key and type "power options" or "Sound" I get nothing. I'm pretty sure this is supposed to work as it's mentioned in many of Microsoft's own documents as the easiest way to navigate to these settings.
Other searches are working, including files on secondary drives, etc.
Start Screen Search Won't Search IE Favorites Websites
Apr 8, 2013It seems I have to open File Explorer and use the search box there to search the contents of my IE Favorites folder. Is there anyway to add the same capability to the Start Screen Search. So far all I can do is put in the word "favorites" and start screen search finds the Favorites folder but it can't find any of the internet shortcuts (*.url files) within the Favorites folder. Is this normal? If so how can I change the normal behavior so it works like the start button search from Vista and Win7?

Feb 9, 2014I'm a Windows 8. I'm trying to RDP from my new Windows 8 laptop to an XP desktop, both of which are on my home network. When I try, I get the below error...
Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network
As best as I can tell, none of the conditions above is true. Here is what I have looked at so far...
- On the XP machine, in System settings / Remote, "Allow users to connect to this system" is Checked. I have successfully RDP'd to this machine in the past, but this is the first time I've tried from the Windows 8 machine.
- From the Windows 8 machine, I can ping the XP machine, and I can access a shared drive on the XP machine. In fact, I've been moving files between the XP machine and the Windows 8 machine, in both directions, all day.
- Just to eliminate another potential issue, I have set the username and password on the Windows 8 machine to match that on the XP machine.
Incidentally, XP machine is running XP Pro, 2002, SP3.

I have been trying to find a way to be able to search these PDF files, the only way I have found was to add words in the file tags. I can search OK in Win 7 but the tags do not appear in win 8.1.

May 3, 2014So, I go into a folder and look at all the files and folders. In the upper right is the search box. I can type in the name of a folder within that folder that search should have no problem finding, and it can't find anything.
The search feature appears to work normally when I mouseover to the right of the screen, that menu pops up, and you type in what you want to look (the thing that searches apps and control panel and everything in Win8).
Any Way To Search For Folders (by Folder Name)?
