View 2 RepliesI have a bunch of of HD videos on my computer but they're all scattered all over different drives and folders. Is there a way where I can search by video quality? Such as only search for 1080p videos?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a very strange issue which makes using Windows Search more difficult.
File Explorer opened to Computer or Libraries > No search. I can type whatever I want to search field, search simply does not start. From the net I found this issue being quite common when you have mapped network drives which are currently offline. This is not my case, when this issue first occurred a week or two ago I had no mapped network drives.
I can search normally all other locations, for instance if I am not sure on which hd a file is located I must search each HD individually as the Computer view search wont start.
Windows 8 Pro with MC x64, see specs for the hardware.
While trying to add folders to the Search Index, I was informed the Windows Search process was not started. When I go to the Services Console and attempt to manually start, I am given the error:
"Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer.
Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."
So I opened an command prompt with administrative level access to run sfc and received the following error after it was complete:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios."
The CBS.log file is too large to upload to here or paste into pastebin, so here is a dropbox upload of it:
What other way, aside from a repair install, do I have to fix my missing files and services?

I would like to replace Bing search and use Google search when I open the IE app in Windows 8.1. Is this possible?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWindows 8 search refuses to search items in my control panel. For example, if I tap the windows key and type "power options" or "Sound" I get nothing. I'm pretty sure this is supposed to work as it's mentioned in many of Microsoft's own documents as the easiest way to navigate to these settings.
Other searches are working, including files on secondary drives, etc.
It seems I have to open File Explorer and use the search box there to search the contents of my IE Favorites folder. Is there anyway to add the same capability to the Start Screen Search. So far all I can do is put in the word "favorites" and start screen search finds the Favorites folder but it can't find any of the internet shortcuts (*.url files) within the Favorites folder. Is this normal? If so how can I change the normal behavior so it works like the start button search from Vista and Win7?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have bought a new laptop with win 8.1. ( I would have preferred Win 7 but it only came with win 8.) This laptop is being dedicated as a paperless file storage system. I scan all my paperwork to PDF files and store in folders.
I have been trying to find a way to be able to search these PDF files, the only way I have found was to add words in the file tags. I can search OK in Win 7 but the tags do not appear in win 8.1.
I was a heavy user of the Windows 7 desktop search, either by the taskbar or the start menu. I most often used it to find emails, especially when I didn't remember which of my many accounts received the item. It worked across Outlook 2010, Live Mail, and Thunderbird.
Is it somewhere hidden in Windows 8? If not, is there an alternative? I believe the mail is still being indexed so it may only be a client that accesses the database that is needed.
I can search program and setting but when I search file there is nothing.Only blank screen.
I can click Files and Homegroup but both have nothing, empty screen only. When I start Homegroup in desktop I can see Homegroup and Library show my files.
Local expert ask me to do SFC SCANNOW.
So, I go into a folder and look at all the files and folders. In the upper right is the search box. I can type in the name of a folder within that folder that search should have no problem finding, and it can't find anything.
The search feature appears to work normally when I mouseover to the right of the screen, that menu pops up, and you type in what you want to look (the thing that searches apps and control panel and everything in Win8).
Possible to set up windows search to return directories in addition to files in the search results? If you have ever used Launchy you probably have a good idea of the functionality I am talking about.

Then press OK.
Windows 8. I just performed a refresh of my MSDN RTM copy of Windows 8 and my search screen (from the start screen) is dumbed-down now - i.e.: when I go to the search screen it only searches on apps and does not provide the filter UI that should be on the right-hand side.
Is there a setting somewhere or did my refresh actually break Windows?
I lost the connection to the PC parameters, displayed in the app list, and now I can no longer access it.

It is random too some things work like cmd, word, pc settings and things like change screen settings or something that deals with directly changing a setting without actually going to the control panel or pc settings first doesn't click.

When I click on a doc to open it, it goes into desktop mode to view the Word doc. After viewing the file, how do I get back to the list of search results? It seems like I have to recreate the search everytime after viewing a file.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have uninstalled "HP Coolsense" from my PC and can't find a reference to it anywhere. But it still shows up in my windows search (the one that shows up from the right) . . with an icon and everything (unfortunately I can't snip that but I could the error that comes up, which is attached).
Is there a way to refresh this? I can't right-click on the entry either--it doesn't do anything.
It isn't:
in the list of installed programs
in the registry (I searched for "coolsense" FWIW).
In the "all program" section of the metro menu
I was thinking this was a Windows Search/Indexing issue--I normally leave that off, but I turned it off and it rebuilt my index and it's still there.

I am not able to do a search in Windows 8 on my Computer for documents. For instance. Searching for a PDF document that is saved under the title "Lanolin". I type in "La" in the search and get a number of documents but not Lanolin. I type the full Name and get no results. I Close the search function and I am looking right at the document that the search tells me is not there. Is there something else that one must do so that the search function functions?
View 6 Replies View RelatedWindows 8.1 upgrade. The "universal" search sucks. Control panel -disabled BING. But when I return to the search screen, and start typing, the default remains EVERYTHING. This excludes a lot of the paths FILES looks under.
Is there any way for Win 8.1 to default your search to FILES (not Everything, which excludes a lot of your index locations)?
I'm currently running my Windows 8 system from a 125GB SSD with all my music, movies etc. on a 1TB partitioned SATA drive. My libraries are all set up to point to the different partitions and they are also included in my indexing options.
I'm having a problem with searching within my libraries at the moment. My Music is not returning any results when I search directly within the library, yet when I search my C: drive the files are displayed (with their paths showing their correct paths e.g. M:My MusicBeastie Boys.....)
After upgrading to Windows 8.1 from 8.0 I noticed that I can no longer search anything under 'Settings' (Winkey + W). I am still able to search for files and the web (Bing ads and all that) however (ie. under 'Everywhere' or Files). I have already rebuilt the index and rebooted/shutdown a few times and it still does not work.

I have looked over all safety settings. Words along the lines of "sex, gun, porn, murder, assault, etc." are blocked. I get a "Cannot display this webpage" kind of error. Something interesting is I can search for the word "guns" but not the word "gun".
View 7 Replies View RelatedHow do I add a programs shortcut to the start menu search? For an example: On Windows 7 when I installed Steam on my second hard drive, the Steam exe popped up when I searched "Steam" in the start menu search. When I went to Windows 8, it doesn't do this anymore because I didn't reinstall Steam because it's already on my second hard drive. How do I get it to pop back up in the search?
