Cannot Search In Computer Or In Libraries In File Explorer
Apr 18, 2013
I have a very strange issue which makes using Windows Search more difficult.
File Explorer opened to Computer or Libraries > No search. I can type whatever I want to search field, search simply does not start. From the net I found this issue being quite common when you have mapped network drives which are currently offline. This is not my case, when this issue first occurred a week or two ago I had no mapped network drives.
I can search normally all other locations, for instance if I am not sure on which hd a file is located I must search each HD individually as the Computer view search wont start.
Windows 8 Pro with MC x64, see specs for the hardware.

I am moving my windows 8.1 libraries from C: to D:. I tried to move Documents to the root folder of D: which is empty during that time. It asked me if I want to move also my files to D:, I moved it. So, the next thing I did was also to move Pictures at the root folder of D: also. Then it prompted if I want to merge these to libraries, I hit yes. Now the problem is that I can't un-merge it anymore. Whatever I put in my 'Documents' lib also appears in 'Pictures' and vice versa. I tried to explore solutions like changing properties, well at first it will change but it reverts to one library again though they appear differently as 'Documents' and 'Pictures' libs.
I decided to restore default setting of these two libraries, but nothing happened. In 'Documents' library, the location is C:UsersIdeapadDocuments and upon checking the location of 'Pictures' library its C:UsersIdeapadDocuments also. When I change the location of 'Picture' library to C:UsersIdeapadPictures, the 'Documents' library also changes to C:UsersIdeapadPictures.

MS butchered the File Explorer in 8.1.
I recall seeing a link a while ago about how to move the "Libraries" folder back above "This PC", but I can't seem to find it.
What is the procedure for doing this?
Windows 8.1
Windows8.1.jpg
Windows 8
Windows8.jpg
I figured it out:
Code:
Original
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}]
"SortOrderIndex"=dword:00000054
New
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}]
"SortOrderIndex"=dword:00000042
Everything is back as it should be.

I want to change the File Explorer default opening location from the Libraries to 'This PC -> Desktop'. However, both 'Target' and 'Start In' fields in the File Explorer properties are greyed out.
I am an administrator, and as far as I can tell with my level of know-how, I have full permissions.

I'm currently running my Windows 8 system from a 125GB SSD with all my music, movies etc. on a 1TB partitioned SATA drive. My libraries are all set up to point to the different partitions and they are also included in my indexing options.
I'm having a problem with searching within my libraries at the moment. My Music is not returning any results when I search directly within the library, yet when I search my C: drive the files are displayed (with their paths showing their correct paths e.g. M:My MusicBeastie Boys.....)

I am running Windows 8 64bit. I have two internal hard drives: a 118GB SSD (C and a 2T HD (B.
Windows was installed onto C: and so the default library locations were set to C:. I obviously didn't have enough room to let C: contain my normal documents so I changed my default library locations to be on B:.
With this configuration the Search feature has never found any documents on B:. Today I double-checked to make sure B: was set to be indexed, and it is. I then had the computer rebuild the index. I even ran the Search troubleshooter and had the Windows "Fix It" program rebuild my search features.

I actually have 2 problems. One with the Windows tiles, and the other one with Explorer/Libraries.
- First of all, I start with the small problem. I booted my PC today, and to my surprise, my Windows tiles were gone. Only the Store, Onedrive, Explorer and the Desktop are there. The rest? Gone. Very weird, never had this before.
So that is question 1: How to restore the Windows tiles. It's weird they disappeared, I did nothing with the configuration or something else.
- Second, and this is the main thing.
I have a serious issue with the Explorer/Libraries. My PC has 3 HDD's and 1 SSD. The SSD is, obviously, the Windows drive. Nothing special. The other 3 are for mass storage.
Stock, Windows sets all on the C drive. Like user stuff, install paths, you know. Also the libraries, like Pictures, Videos, Documents and Music. This is the part where it goes wrong.
I don't wanna have all my Music, Pics and the rest on my C drive. Only my Windows installation... So, I put my libraries into the D drive. I made a My documents folder on the empty D drive, and changed the direction path of the libraries on the left to the new My documents map. This goes good, except for the Music map.
The Music map thinks he is Desktop. I've tried to tell him, he's not, but the folder isn't listening. Without jokes, this is a really weird thing.
I tried to re position, but the Desktop and Music folder are thinking they are each other. I don't know how to solve this. The other folders do work, no problem with those. Except for these two.
Bad thing is also, I thought, if I delete the map, and create a new one, maybe that'll work. Not. Instead, Windows decided to delete both maps, Desktop and Music, so now, my icons, and music is gone. It's really weird, as I said, it's happening only with these maps.
Any solution or trick for this? Maybe,I could try and get the whole 'Users' map, from the C drive to D, so it makes one whole?

I wanted to have File History backup data that is not contained in the "standard" libraries so I set up a library for each volume that I wanted backed up. I just included the root of the volume as the only folder in the library. But File History just seems to ignore those libraries.

I have a folder in dropbox with sub folders and in those folders are many .txt's.
e.g. Dropbox/Folder1/File1 - KEYWORD.txt
BUT when I go to Dropbox and run a search for *- KEYWORD.txt it shows absolutely no results.
Under Search Options Tab I have:
1) Enabled search in sub folders.
2) Allowed Partial Matches.
How to find all the KEYWORD.txt files in the sub folders?

While trying to add folders to the Search Index, I was informed the Windows Search process was not started. When I go to the Services Console and attempt to manually start, I am given the error:
"Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer.
Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."
So I opened an command prompt with administrative level access to run sfc and received the following error after it was complete:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios."
The CBS.log file is too large to upload to here or paste into pastebin, so here is a dropbox upload of it:
What other way, aside from a repair install, do I have to fix my missing files and services?

Processor: Intel i5 2500k @ 3.3GHz

I was hoping the update from 8 to 8.1 would fix it but no luck.In a nutshell: Windows search for Files stopped working out of nowhere, searching for Apps/Settings works fine, but searching for Files yield no results, not only that, when I enter a file to search for it just sits there without any info on whether it is searching or not (Just says "Files" and nothing more where it usually would also say "Searching...").
I've been troubleshooting this but no one has had this exact problem, here are the solutions I've tried:
- Going to Indexing Options and manually adding the drives I wish to index to "Index these locations" and allowing for a full index. No results, no "Searching" phrase comes up either.
- Using Microsofts Windows Search Troubleshooter which essentially is supposed to fix problems like database corruption and crashes. Part of the fix is it resets the index (so my drives I added aren't in the list anymore), and it says it has Fixed the issues, but upon trying search: I do get the "searching" phrase, but I get very slow (about 25 seconds) and half-assed results (and only when I hit enter or click the magnifying glass icon), it's no longer a list of files in the search pane that starts to list file suggestions in the search pane. It also doesn't find folders.
Finally what I discovered today was in the Windows Features dialog box there is no Windows Search option (which I know should be there, it's on my laptop running Windows 8). I think this may be the key to all of this.

It seems Windows 8.1 hates me, and my search indexing service is not running. I have checked services and it shows stopped. When I try to run the service, it says "Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."
I have not removed this file, so I don't know what would cause this? I've attached a picture for a visual reference.
As a side note, this also affects my searching ability in Outlook 2013 64 bit. I cannot search for anything, as I do not get any results. I can search my PC for items by using the top right hand search box. I began looking into this because I could not search in outlook.

Is it possible to sort a folder's contents with both File names and Sub-Folder names intermixed? I have projects in sub-folders, and 'support' files like this:
projabc (sub-folder)
projabc.txt (file)
projabc.bat (file)
amongst other projects. I would like all the 'projabc...' items to appear together.

Here is my system information...
System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 8 Pro, 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3520M CPU @ 2.90GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 58 Stepping 9
Processor Count: 4
RAM: 11983 Mb
Graphics Card: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000, -1984 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 243845 MB, Free - 168572 MB;
Motherboard: LENOVO, 3434CTO
Antivirus: Windows Defender, Disabled
I'm here for a "system folder" I cannot get rid of but as I'm posting my system info above I realize that Antivirus shows Disabled! I just checked Action Center and Windows Defender shows ON for both antivirus and spyware. Why does the info utility show Disabled??
Now, for the reason I posted, a couple weeks ago I was playing with different desktop apps to reply to phone texts via my pc. One of those apps required my phone to connect via Bluetooth to my pc so I went ahead and made the connection. I didn't really like the app so I uninstalled and also went to Devices and Printers and uninstalled the phone from there.
Now when I open My Computer ('Computer' in Windows 8), I see:
Hard Disk Drives (1) - Windows(C
Devices with Removable Storage(2) - Flash(D and BD-ROM Drive(F
Other(1) - SGH-T889 System Folder
Portable Devices(1) - Galaxy Note 2 Portable Media Player
My annoyance is with the Other(1). I know for a fact the "SGH-T889" is my phone's model number. Under Portable Devices I see the phone as well because I have it connected to the pc but even if I disconnect it, the 'Other' category remains. When I try to click, right-click, or do any type of clicking on SGH-T899 Explorer just hangs indefinitely. I need to restart Explorer to resume.
I want to get rid of this "Other" field. Underneath the SGH-T889 it says 'System Folder' in gray lettering and it shows an icon of a cell phone. But again, I cannot click on it without it freezing on me. There is no more phone in Devices and Printers or anywhere else I can think of.

I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 this week and have a fully updated installation now with minimal programs installed. My problem is this, I have my downloads folder set to sort files by date created, from newest to oldest so I can easily find my newest downloads as they should be at the top of the listing, but Windows explorer will not refresh the view if I have have explorer open, forcing me to either manually refresh it or go to another folder, then come back which updates the view. I never had to do this with the old win 8 pro installation and have tried resetting the folders several times but it still won't update by itself. I do have the latest version of Start8 installed, but that never caused a problem before.

I use an alternative file manager so I don't run explorer.exe very often. But today I had a need to, and when I opened it, I found that the ribbon interface was missing.
The file manager I use does take over all file and folder operations by default, but even turning off the "Explorer replacement" option, the ribbon remains missing...
