Add Shortcut To Start Menu Search?
Dec 15, 2013How do I add a programs shortcut to the start menu search? For an example: On Windows 7 when I installed Steam on my second hard drive, the Steam exe popped up when I searched "Steam" in the start menu search. When I went to Windows 8, it doesn't do this anymore because I didn't reinstall Steam because it's already on my second hard drive. How do I get it to pop back up in the search?

Oct 17, 2013After upgrading to Windows 8.1 from 8.0 I noticed that I can no longer search anything under 'Settings' (Winkey + W). I am still able to search for files and the web (Bing ads and all that) however (ie. under 'Everywhere' or Files). I have already rebuilt the index and rebooted/shutdown a few times and it still does not work.

Sep 15, 2014I just bought my first Windows 8 laptop, a Lenovo e540. Above the dedicated number pad is a key with a calculator printed on it. Pressing this key of course brings up the 'Calculator' program that comes with Widows. I however strongly dislike said program and have no intention to use it. Instead I aim to have this calculator key open up my preferred calculator, which at this point is SpeQ.
So I created a shortcut for SpeQ and in the shortcut panel of the properties window I set it to the calculator button (which says its "ctrl + alt + F" in the shortcut box). I then found the shortcut for 'calculator' and set the shortcut key to 'None'. BUT... even after double checking that the settings were as intended and restarting the computer, the calculator key still opens up the old program. Additionally, despite "ctrl + Alt + F" appearing in the text box next to shortcut key, typing this opens neither program.

Nov 9, 2013Windows 8 search refuses to search items in my control panel. For example, if I tap the windows key and type "power options" or "Sound" I get nothing. I'm pretty sure this is supposed to work as it's mentioned in many of Microsoft's own documents as the easiest way to navigate to these settings.
Other searches are working, including files on secondary drives, etc.
Start Screen Search Won't Search IE Favorites Websites
Apr 8, 2013It seems I have to open File Explorer and use the search box there to search the contents of my IE Favorites folder. Is there anyway to add the same capability to the Start Screen Search. So far all I can do is put in the word "favorites" and start screen search finds the Favorites folder but it can't find any of the internet shortcuts (*.url files) within the Favorites folder. Is this normal? If so how can I change the normal behavior so it works like the start button search from Vista and Win7?

With programs it is easy - right click and it says pin to taskbar. With Java it seems not to be possible. There is no such option on the context menu.
I know you can not run Java in Metro but I'd like to invoke the JVM and my jar from the desktop - just like any other program. I've tried the jar and the shortcut but neither work.
How To Get Shortcuts In Win 8 Not Put Suffix Shortcut
Apr 1, 2013In Windows 8, what does one need to do, so that when one creates a shortcut, it does not have "shortcut" added to the end of the name?
Of course one can rename the shortcut and delete that suffix, but simpler it they were not created that way from the outset.
I managed to stop that behavior in WinXP and Win7, but I forget how, and I don't know if it is done the same way in Windows 8 anyhow.
By the way, I do not mind the little arrow on shortcut icons, a little reminder that it is a shortcut (but no need for "shortcut" to be added to the name.)
Also, if I create a shortcut on my WinXP computer, it does not add a file extension. For instance, if I create a shortcut to a file named "program.exe", the shortcut in XP will just say "Program". On my Windows 8 computer though, the shortcut is called program.exe.shortcut.
I don't remember if it was that way in XP by default, or whether I did some tweak years ago. Although I do have Explorer set to show file extensions, I don't need a shortcut to include the extension, as well as no suffix "shortcut".
Is there a tweak in Windows 8 to have the default shortcut not include the word "shortcut" at the end, and not include the extension of the file linked to?

When I try and clean up the start menu, by deleting short cuts of programs I don't use, like metro apps (PC Settings & Store) once I delete these short cuts I can no longer access PC settings or Store. When I click PC settings in the Metro Menu it does nothing. Same with Store app. If I restore the deleted short cuts to these programs it works again. I've tried to hide these programs from the start menu but that option to hide is greyed out.
A; Hide these apps from the start menu without deleting them.
B. Delete them from the start menu but have them still work in the Metro Menu.

Aug 17, 2014I just did the 'refresh without losing files or settings' after having Windows 8.1 for like 6 months to refresh. Well I lost pretty much every setting and basically started from scratch minus backing up my files to an external/cloud like a regular full reformat. This feature save maybe 5 minutes. and my monitor settings are all messed up, tiny text or scroll bar on the bottom of IE because pages wont fit if I make the text larger, the resolution was fine before I reformatted. What a POS OS. I can go on and on and on. MS should be sued for emotional distress for this faulty POS OS.
So my recents docs is gone we all know, but there are sort of workarounds. I want my recent docs, not recent 'Items' that I was able to pin to start but requires more navigating to get to recent word files etc.
I did this Just open the run dialog box by pressing Win + R and type in "recent". There you can see your recent activities.
Note: "Recent places" can be access under Windows Explorer's under "Favorite".
Also you can create a shortcut of the "recent" at your desktop and then pin it to start menu. For this just right click on desktop and seclect New>Shortcut. In file location type the path
well when I enter the copied path to the new shortcut, it says invalid. The path is:
C:Users
ameRecent"C:Users
ame
ecentRecent"
Edit, after just noticing the link above actually doubled the path, I just deleted the duplicate second half and got the shortcut to create and made it work.
great program that it duplicated the path when I copied it once.
